Is IWeb 09 worth it?

I have iWeb 06 (ilife 06). Is it worth it to get the iLife 09 (mainly for the iweb)
Is it easy to move my website to the newer version of the program?
I still have tiger, is it compatible?
sorry if these questions are stupid/ have been asked already!
thanks!

No. iLife '09 requires Mac OS X v10.5.6 (Leopard) or later. See this Apple doc:

  • Is iWeb 9 worth upgrading from 8?

I have built a site in 8 and am happy with it, the only thing is that i have to upload the whole site via FTP to godaddy whenever i make minor changes.
From what i see iweb9 allows you to publish straight from iweb.
I like the way 8 works and i'm used to it, are there any major differences, pro's / con's with iweb9?
I don't want to upgrade and find myself in a whole new world like from imovie 6 to imovie 8!
    Please share your opinions.
    Thanks
    Dave

The built in FTP in iWeb has been hit or miss. For some it works like a charm and for others it's a big disaster. Hard to say. One option is to get Web Site Maestro and use it to optimize and upload your site. For subsequent edits and publishes you can set it up to upload only the changed files.

  • IWeb '09 and Google Analytics

So, Apple finally released the feature I've been waiting years for - the ability to upload to FTP in iWeb '09. This is really awesome because iWeb can upload changes to a site only instead of having to export the site to my hard drive then upload the entire site via a separate FTP program.
The only problem is it has basically broken my Google Analytics support. I used to use a Automator script to automatically add Google Analytics code to each page before manually uploading, but now that iWeb does the uploading itself, I can't do this anymore. And the way iWeb implements HTML "widgets", it loads javascripts in a separate file instead of in the main HTML file of each page, which basically means Google analytics won't work.
Does anybody have a good way to get Google Analytics working in an iWeb page without exporting the page and uploading with a separate FTP program?

    J-a-x:
I started using iWeb '08 when it first came out and have been very happy with it. I purchase iLife '09 and have switched to iWeb '09 with very few problems. I use Statcounter (and Google Analytics on one site) and ran into the same problem that you have indicated. Initially, I used the Publish to FTP function and used html snippets for the Statcounter code which worked OK.
One of the problems with using iWeb is that the pages do not always look the same in Safari as they do in IE7. What I do not is publish to a folder then through VMWare Fusion, look at the pages in Internet Explorer. The main difference that I am finding is the text boxes. This procedure allows me to make sure that the pages veiw correctly in IE7 before I publish them.
Once, I am happy with the pages in the website, (at the recommendation of Roddy) the pages are optimized through Website Maestro (WSM). This creates another folder in your Sites folder with each site optimized. I then use iTweak to add the Statcounter codes to the optimized pages and then upload to the server with Fetch. WSM has the upload function, but last night I could not figure out the paths correctly so I used Fetch.
FYI, I am also using Multisite with iWeb '09 and it seems to work fine. I maintain three websites, two of which have similar information. I can be working on a site, use Multisite to quickly switch to one of the other websites, copy information, then switch back to the previous site and paste the information. Seems to work well.
I think an important thing to remember is that most of the people that view your website are going to be using Windows Internet Explorer so it is very important that you make sure that the view they see is correct; in that case WSM is a must have.
Is iWeb '09 worth the upgrade? Yes, I think so even though I have chosen no to use the Publish to FTP function, the Publish to Folder option is much enhanced. There may be some additional enhancements that make it easier to use that I do not use and am unaware.
    Hope this helps!

  • Problems displaying in IE

While I love iWeb's ease of use, it seems to have serious problems displaying on IE. There is really no point blaming IE, since it is the dominant browser and most people who will see our sites will use it. The point of iWeb should be to allow people to communicate broadly and effectively, not just to Mac & Safari users.
Lists do not work well. The indents do not display properly. Text in boxes shift alignment and location. Bullets show up with different sizes. I have had to hand indent and line space all the lists in the sites I make, which is a mess and not scaleable.
    See fieldsforkidsmamk.org.
Are there any workarounds or fixes?
The other obvious issues with iWeb are worth noting:
    * inconsistent display in browsers -- pages look different in Safari and Firefox, even on the Mac (let alone IE)
    * difficulty adding html code
    * page names must be identical to nav names, so pages with multiple words (Get Involved) display urls as /Get%20Involved (can't be corrected unless you have Get_Involved as a header.)
    * need to publish whole site for any change
    * need to publish all sites for each change to any site
    * can't change color, display, location, function etc for Nav
I assume everyone is aware of these problems. The question is, what to do? Grin and bear it? Any help, tips or ideas would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

You can fix this the same way you add html code, by post processing.
    * need to publish all sites for each change to any
    site
You can fix this by separating your sites into different Domain files so you only publish one at a time.
Contrary to the other response, "encoding" is not connected to the points you made. There is never any need to add a UTF-8 "tag" to an iWeb page. If you see question marks or Â's when your page is displayed on any browser, Mac or PC, then you may need to fix your ftp or server settings.

  • Other than .mac domain name

I'm really new at this folks, so please bear with me. I have a .com domain name and I would like to use iWeb to publish my web page(s), I think. Can I do this? As I said, I'm really new at this and still have a lot to learn about web hosting, (which I'm not even sure what that is yet) and creating my website but hey, you gotta start somewhere right? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. How limited am I if I do end up using iWeb?

Let me try to flesh out some concepts for you...
You need both a domain name and a hosting account to be able to have people type in your domain.com address and see your hosted web pages. So I know you definitely have a domain name. What I am not sure about is whether you have a web host or not. As far as you web host goes, you can host your iWeb designed pages either on .Mac or on a 3rd party web host. The easiest place to find a 3rd party web host would probably be the same company you registered your domain name from.
Of course, things are easiest in the purest Apple sense if you join .Mac for your web hosting needs. Several iWeb features only work if your pages are hosted on .Mac, and of course with .Mac you have the luxury of uploading your pages directly from iWeb.
If you use a 3rd party host, then you can still design your web pages in iWeb, but your publishing option is limited to publishing your entire site to a folder, which then needs to be uploaded via your favorite FTP program to your 3rd party web host. The process isn't difficult once you get the hang of it, but you are required to upload your entire site each and every time you make even a little change (as opposed to just uploading the changes from iWeb directly if you are using .Mac).
So there are slight differences depending on who you choose to host your webpages. Tom has already provided you with tips for 3rd party webhosts. I would highly recommend going with .Mac if you don't already have a web host in mind. The tight integration of .mac with OS X even without iWeb is worth the extra money in my mind.
But you have to make up your own mind. Good luck! And happy iWebbing!

  • Long question - possible easy answer!

    Hello Everyone
Ok here is my dilemma. I have my own domain which is http://www.jamiefrasier.com. I design my site on iWeb and publish via .mac to check everything looks good. When I'm happy I then publish the folder and transfer via ftp to my actual domain.
I've decided to create a guest book using a cheeky blog method. It will of course let people make comments on the .mac server but not when you publish to a folder and upload to another service. Check it out here to see what I mean: http://web.mac.com/jamiemail/Jamie_Frasier/Welcome.html
How can I get this to work? If I were to use the apple Personal Domain service will it publish everything from iWeb directly to my own server or does it still use the apple servers. I want http://www.jamiefrasier.com to work with this new guest book page but at the moment the only way is to use the apple servers which defeats the whole reason I pay for a outside server - SPEED!
    Please help.

  • Is it worth upgrading iWeb?

I don't have time to learn dreamweaver... I have iWeb '08 which I have made a few sites with. I am a bit bored of it but have no option. I was recently wondering if an upgrade would spice things up? Do iWebs get better each year?

iWeb '09 is not that much more advanced than '08 and, since Apple has given up on the application, its hardly worth upgrading if you are bored with it!

  • Is iweb worth it ?

    Hi,
I want to launch a Web site soon and was wondering if I should go with iweb or another program.
I was thinking about Yahoo web site builder, but I'm new with Mac and discovered that they had a web site tool to make a web site. (iweb)
I have no interest in Macromedia dream weaver, I have worked with it before, and I got nowhere,
    to complicated.
    Thanks.

Jean-André ~ If you want to update your site "on the road", you'd be better off with a web-based site builder. Weebly is different from most in that it has a free, e-commerce feature:
    http://blog.weebly.com/2/post/2009/05/announcing-weebly-e-commerce-features.html

iWeb is designed for personal sites and so Apple apparently assumes you'll simply pass your site's URL to friends & family. Web-design apps for business sites tend to integrate search engine optimization — Sandvox Pro is an example:

  • Problems with text in iWeb publishing much larger, or smaller than in iWeb (it is insane)!

More than a year ago I had a problem with my iWeb not publishing correctly: links to other websites would not open in a separate window as designed in iWeb. I got help from an AppleCare techie and after he did a lot of tests, he concluded I had a corrupted Domain file (which became apparent after I upgraded to OS Snow Leopard).  I don't remember if I discussed with this techie another problem I had been having for as long as I had used iWeb, and that was "exploding" text: certain words, often italicized, would be huge, after publishing, relative to the surrounding text.  Sometimes certain words, or sentences would be smaller than designed in iWeb.  Through trial and error I would sort of solve these problems by enlarging text boxes, or making the offending word or phrase one text point smaller.  Sometimes deleting the text box entirely, and starting over would work.  And then there are the weird things that happen when my wife opens my website in Internet Explorer: things that make no sense and seem to be totally out of my control.
So, I've spent a long time rebuilding my website in this supposedly uncorrupted Domain file, and today I finally finished and published to my hard drive, checked it out, and the "exploding" text is there with a vengeance.  So much so that I may just stick with my original ("corrupted") Domain file, the text problem on this new one seems even worse than the old one.  Anyone had this problem?  I meant to ask this question years ago, but got a bit lazy.
Another question is: I've heard Apple is going to discontinue iWeb.  Despite my problems with the program, I rely on it.  What are the options going to be for iWeb users?

Well you heard wrong didn't you!
Apple is discontinuing MobileMe, which is the hosting in favour of iCloud services which will not contain any hosting.
iWeb is an app and as far as we know you can still continue to use it - it will still work so carry on using it if you are happy with it.
If you want to look at other alternatives to iWeb, then others suggest RapidWeaver and Sandvox as being closer to iWeb - both are available via the Mac App store.
Also Freeway Express and Flux 3 are worth looking at - more design freedom and you are not restricted to templates as with RapidWeaver.

  • I posted this message in the iWeb section and they suggested I try here...

I posted the following message on the iWeb bulletin board, and it was suggested that the error I am getting might be an OS issue instead of an iWeb issue.
    message is as follows:
iWeb will not publish to .Mac. After pressing publish, the program signs into .mac and then proceeds to create the web pages. Once all the pages are created circles form next to their consecutive sites. These usually fill up like a clock showing the site being uploaded. However, for the past few days nothing happens once the circles appear. Then after a few minutes iWeb crashes. Also, during this time my whole computer freezes. iTunes will stop playing until the iWeb crash is complete. This has happened every time I have tried to publish over the past few days. Just last week I was able to publish without any problems.
I think there might be a problem with .mac because I am able to publish to a folder without any problems.
I have repaired permissions over and over again...
The only thing new I added to my mac since my last time I publish something in iWeb was the trial version of File Maker's Bento.
Here is the error message I get from the crash.
    Parent Process: launchd 82
    Date/Time: 2008-01-14 16:57:18.418 -0500
    OS Version: Mac OS X 10.5.1 (9B18)
    Report Version: 6
    Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGBUS)
    Exception Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE at 0x0000000000000000
    Crashed Thread: 14
    --- finished---
Today, safari crashed with the same error message.
I do not think this is not a network connection problem because I tried both at home and at school with the same result. I also remember that I recently installed a security update that was released several months ago. At the time of the release it was close to finals, and I could not risk losing my laptop...
    Thank you in advance!

I was able to get it to work...
After creating a new user account, I moved the domain file over to the new account.
However, I still had the problem where iWeb would crash.
I was able to publish when I moved the previous domain file to another folder and tried with a new site a and domain file.
For me this meant that somehow my old domain file had become corrupt. I was really upset. I had kept a blog regularly for over two years and now everything was lost.
Or was it? Before all this started, after two years of using the same template for creating my blog, I changed everything over to a new theme. Previously I had put a lot of my photos up with iWeb. But, during my conversion I erased those photo pages and decided to go with the new gallery feature. This took my web site from over 400 MB down to a mere 30 MB. It was after this conversion that I started to have problems with iWeb crashing.
(Before I had made conversions to different templates on other web sites I have made using iWeb without a problem. So, I did not have a reason to think that was the cause.)
Anyway, thinking I had lost two years worth of blog entries I was desperate. So, I tried something drastic. I erased the contents of the Web folder on my idisk. And this did the trick. It seems that going from over 400 MB to 30 MB was too much for iWeb to handle at one time. Now that it is a brand new site, it up loads without a problem.
Just in time too. I needed iWeb to get another site up and going!
Before trying to upload I did not have to erase the .plist file or anything to get it to work.
I also did not reinstall iWeb or Mac OS X.
I wish you the VERY best of luck!!
P.S. I did not get an responses here either. However, the people in the iPhoto group were very helpful!

  • Can't get Movie Exported in Quicktime format to work in iWeb and Website

Help!! I just completed a movie in iMovie and exported it in Quicktime Format. It loads into iWeb seamlessly, and I can view it in iweb, but once I save the files to a folder and then the folder to my host (Godaddy, for what it is worth) I get the Blue Quicktime Q with the question mark in the middle. I have downloadd the movie in different sizes, from as much as 19 Mb down to 4.5 Mb and it is all the same. It is for a real estate listing I have. For what it is worth. I created my first website in iweb 1.0 and imovie 06 (http:www.1055Prince.info) and it works great. I created my second website with iweb 2.0 and imovie 08 (http:www.1045Prince.info) and it will not work. I like the design of the 2.0 template better, but I like the fact that the 1.0 template is working flawlessly. Any help is greatly appreciated.

iWeb writes very clever page code and your page had a very common error.
http://www.1045prince.info/VideoTour_files/VideoTour.js is a file created by iWeb that points to your QuickTime file.
If you use the Finder to edit the name prior to Publishing in iWeb things will be just fine and the link will work as designed. Do not edit any file name before uploading to your server and make sure your files use "Web safe" naming schemes (no spaces, punctuation or illegal characters) and the proper file extension.

  • How do I resize/change resolution of photos from iPhoto when used in iWeb

I am shooting with a 7.1 Mega Pixel Canon to get enough quality to crop and print high quality pictures of my baby daughter and her adventures in the world.
I have a website up made with iWeb, but when I select the photos in iPhoto and go Share / Sent to iWeb / photo page - I get a nice layout of the photos but at full resolution when the thumbnails are selected or the slide show is run. Although nice and sharp, this is a pain for anyone looking at the site even with high speed access.
There must be some way to resize photos, but I have yet to figure that out with iPhoto, let alone iWeb. And as one photo at a time is a pain, there must also be a way to rescale a whole selection of photos that I want to use for a page - say her Disneyworld trip. I can't be the first person to run into this, but I have not found anything out there to point me in the right direction.
Ideally I wold like to create a resized set from the originals - so I can still print and crop in high qulity. I also am not really sure what resolution would be best or easy viewing and download - that's probably subjective. 1200x800 comes to mind but I am open to suggestions.
Perhaps resize is not the right term - changing resolution is probably more accurate, but there too I have not found an answer.
    Appreciate the help and suggestions.

    dan28088,
Tried your site on two different browsers, using highspeed broadband; the site is, indeed, extaordinarily slow. We can dissect the thing down to the last file, but it won't change anything, as far as I can see. If it were me, I would host the site on another server. The .Mac servers are just plain slow, period. I think that is the primary problem here. Just my opinion, others may disagree.
I created a new site this past weekend for a new project, and published it to .Mac. It contains a lot of jpeg files in slideshows (along with the usual png suspects!) . After reviewing it a few times, and not being satisfied with page-load speeds, I published to a folder and uploaded the site to space on 1&1 WebHosting.
The page-load speeds TRIPLED. That's right...3X as fast page-load speeds. Even large, linked to files, 3MB+, load within a reasonable amount of time. (seconds)
I still will keep a .Mac subscription, as I like and use all of the other features of the iDisk. But for serious website hosting, I think you will be better 'served' with a remote host. Your money with .Mac is certainly not wasted; the syncing services and other features of iDisk space that integrate with your local files are well worth the yearly fee. Again, only one user's opinion, based on experience.

  • How best to handle multiple web sites using iWeb 08

I currently am using iWeb08. I am maintaining two websites; The church site resides on a Rogers server. I use Transmit as a FTP loader. The other site is an engineering society's website that is posted on Apple's server. I have an ME account just for the latter group. iWebsites is used to alternate between the two sites. The church group has a .ca web address.
Is it worth upgrading to iWeb 09? How does iWeb09 handle 2 websites? I wish I could publish both to the Mac account but have not figured out how. I must retain the rogers account for viewing the church site
Has anyone deleted iWebsites from OX10.5.6? How was it done? I know that backups are mandatory before attempting these changes.
    Thanks,
    Bill

In its current form, iWeb '09 doesn't handle publishing well at all!
I keep all my sites on separate domain files, each in their own folder. Any site is launched in iWeb by double clicking the domain file. I start each new site from a new, blank domain file.
I keep all my website folders in a folder in a second dock so that I can launch any site with two mouse clicks - faster than you can launch iWebsites!
You can publish as many sites as you want to one MobileMe account but you can only have domain name forwarded as Cname. Any more have to use masking with all its inherent problems.
I would be more inclined to dump MobileMe and publish both sites to a decent hosting company.
The new iWeb '09 FTP works for some. I have tested it with my server - Host Excellence - which doesn't force you to upload to a Public_html folder and this goes as planned.
Having said that, I still publish to a local folder as I optimize and upload my files using Web Site Maestro. Once you have published your site for the first time, this application will then use its Smart Handling feature to process the changed files only.
Unless all your viewers use Macs you have to optimize to get your pages to download in that browser that all the Fred Flintstones of the world use.

  • Moving to iLife 08 from iLife 06 - is it worth the investment

I'm a long time imovie/idvd user. Have used imovie 2 - 6. Also have been working with iweb for about the past year. Are the additional features in iweb08 worth it? This is the first time I've seen an apple software product get released with so many less than favorable reviews.
As far as iWeb is concerned, I'm particularly interested in making my website with social networking capabilities so users can log on, interact with each other, post forums etc. Does the new iWeb 08 allow you to do that? thanks for your feedback in advance. my website btw is www.southbaycruisers.com

I have not posted to youtube, but others in this forum have. What I do is post my podcast (usually made by keynote for my students) directly on my blog page and it is very easy to do. I just put one on tonight without any difficulties. I think the new quicktime upgrade may also improve some of that performance.
If you want to see it here is the link to the video. I warn you it is boring grammar stuff but it might give you an idea of what is possible.

Wyodor's suggestion is certainly a good one.
Additionally, you can consider Security Spy or some of the other alternatives from this User Tip:

Depending on your specific needs, applications from the sections entitled "Webcam Apps"
and "Sight as a surveillance or Nanny cam" are worth considering for your stated purpose.
If you have experience or are willing to do some research, you could stream live video using Apple's

to the user, they require much more technical expertise to setup and configure than some of the
    third-party alternatives.
