Is iWeb for me?

Hi,
I've never had a homepage; never published photos or podcasts; never had a blog.
But I'd quite like to get into blogging...
Is iWeb suitable for me? I just want to blog; only friends will subscribe - but I want it to look professional...
What do you think?
Steve.

It sounds like iWeb would be the perfect solution for you (as long as you have or are willing to buy .mac). iWeb couldn't make web publishing any easier, but looks great. If you aren't willing to purchase .mac, then you may want to try starting a Blogger based blog (www.blogger.com).

I am running 10.6.8 and using iweb for my web site. After several SEO analysis they all indicate I need H1-6 header tags. After looking at the source code I see there are none in iweb. Are they necessary to add?  Why would one add these tags and how do I add H Tags to iweb? And are there examples to look at? I am slowly learning about simple web design and assumed that iweb was stand alone without having to write code. Is this one of the reasons iweb is no longer supported? Thanks for looking at this!

A simple text page like this:
    Heading
        sub heading
              text paragraph ....
Is traditionally represented by html tags like:
    <h1>Heading</h1>
         <h2>sub heading</h2>
              <p>text paragraph ... </p>
I would guess that the use of h1-h6 tags helps search engines to understand the structure of a page as the tags imply a certain structure.
This can be compared to more generic tags like <div> that could represent any kind of content - and may be what iWeb uses (you'll have to check yourself).
I would generally recommend that you use some kind of up to date blog/site building tool, perhaps Wordpress or Squarespace (I haven't used either one myself) that support current web technologies - this should reduce your SEO issues and make it easier to properly support mobile/tablet users.

  • I am trying to edit my website which was composed in iweb. I have my website saved on my hard drive. When I open iweb, I can't seem to load the website folder into iweb for editing purposes. Anyone know a quick solution to this?

I am trying to edit my website which, was composed on iweb about 2 years ago. I have the website stored on my hard drive. When I open iweb, I can't figure out how to load the website into iweb for editing purposes. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

You need to migrate to a modern, supported webpage development application and leave iWeb behind.  It hasn't been supported for 2 years now and was behind the curve feature wise when it was dropped by Apple.
One app that many have migrated to because it is very similar to iWeb in the GUI and features is Everweb.  It has a demo version that you can try.  Text and photos from you current published site can be copied and pasted into Everweb to help the migration over.
There are other possible candidates.  Just search the iWeb forum for "iWeb alternative" or "iWeb replacement" to get a list of topics discussing them.

  • Is it possible to make a form in iWeb for people to fill in

Is it possible to make a form in iWeb for people to fill in for people to subsribe

There  are two possible form types that you can add to your website.  One is using a 3rd party form provider that, when filed in and sent, goes directly to you.  Expamples of them, JotForm and Wufoo can be seen here: Add Form
Further down that page is the second type,  Form action forms, that use the visitors email application to send the response.  That may put off responders.  Take a look at both types.

  • Using iWeb for non dot-mac sites

    Hi all,
I own a number of domains that I'd like to use iWeb on. Am I able to utilize iWeb for a non .mac domain, or do I need to use something like Dreamweaver?
    Many thanks.
    -Hugh

No, in fact I have a sneaky suspicion that not using dot-mac sites will eliminate a lot of problems other people have. You will also lose some of the effects like the nicer slideshow etc.
I have never used dot-mac and never encountered any of the uploading/publishing problems that are so often mentioned on this forum.
    Here is what you do:
After editing your website you choose :Publish to a folder.
This lets you choose a location on your hardrive into which all the necessary files will be compiled/rendered. In this folder you will find an htlm file plus a folder with the necessary files for easch of your pages.. This publishing is done lightning fasy pecause it is done locallly and not trhough your internetconnection like when you published to dot-mac. Also post-editing is easy and hassle free.
For editing and uploading my website I use "Transmit" but there are lots of other applications like "Fetch"
    What to upload?
Well I believe the jury is still out on this.
I just upload the contents of the published folder and that works for me. Other publish the whole folder plus the dummy "Index file" that is generated outside that folder. You will heve to find out for your self.
If any changes or editing has to be done afterwards, I republish and then just upload the altered files.
There is one more thing I do, and I believe others don't. I keep my domain file in the same folder where I keep the Published folder.
E.g. there is a festival website, so I have a folder "Festival" in which I keep the domains file, and the published "Festival website" folder.
This way it is easy to keep various different websites.
When you want to edit one of them, go to that folder and double click the domains file, this will start iWeb with the right website for you to edit.
    Really very easy.

  • Suitability of iWeb for architect's web site

I am an architect, and need to set up a website that is set up to show several categories of building types, and then under each category show several projects, and under each project show multiple images of that project. Can iWeb do this?
Also, I already have a domain name, and need to know if it can be used for my iWeb site.
    Any comments out there?
    thx.

Darryl ~ One thing to bear in mind is that iWeb is designed for personal websites, not commercial ones — so it lacks integrated Search Engine Optimization (SEO). If SEO is important to you, you may want to consider alternatives to iWeb — such as _Sandvox Pro_:

    Darryl Ohlenbusch1 wrote:

Sandvox Pro's "Pagelets" may be useful for this:
    http://docs.karelia.com/z/Pagelet.html
...They say elsewhere: +"A good web designer should be able to work out navigation so the important categories are along the main menu, and then the sub pages would be listed as a Collection Index in a Pagelet."+
Although I haven't used Sandvox Pro, some ex-iWeb users who have made the switch report superior results over iWeb for commercial use.

  • IWeb For Commercial Use, Implemented Back End Code Questions

    Hello
Well I have been looking for this anwer all day. I was wondering wether iWeb could be used for commerical use without any issues of copywrite or license software trouble. Now I know that the software is licensed to me and I cannot redistrubute it. I also know that iWeb code is copywrighted. I do not care about these two things existing, and I am happy to implement iWeb as the generator and me as the license holder. These are not the issues
The issues that remain and worry me is if whether I can use iWeb for commerical use. I know it states that it is intended for personal. I want to implement other systems that are not even iWeb related that will run my video players and music and so on. But for the overall look of the website I like iWeb as the image and graphic creator to create my text and background images and so on. I want to also change code that will work for me that iWeb does not support.
I do not want Apple to get upset with me for using their program for commerical use, but I am a semi advanced web person that knows html and php really well and would like to add my own code and stuff to my advantage
Does anyone know what the copywright is for iWeb and the license permits?
I havent been able to find them
thanks if anyone can answer my problem. i really want to fully implement my website but I need to make sure I can do what I want to do

I also know that iWeb is only html, css and js based, but I want to add my own personal stuff that it is not related to apple that will run other things. I am not sure if this will violate apples terms however.
I'm puzzled why you think your modifying the html and other code produced by iweb might possibly violate anything. Is there any other web editing software which imposes such restrictions? If so, I would be curious which ones do that.
I think there are several people in this forum who have used iweb to create some basic code and then used Dreamweaver and other apps to add advanced features they wanted for uploading to non-.Mac server.

  • Can I use iWeb for my own domain without .mac

I want to use iWeb for creating a simple website. But how can I upload this website to my own domain? Do I need another program. I myself use Dreamweaver. Can I copy the website made in iWeb to dreamweaver? Or... Who can help me out!!!!

You publish to a folder and use an ftp program like Cyberduck, Fetch, or Transmit to upload. I recommend you not use Dreamweaver. Some tips:

  • Who is iWeb for?

    Hello
I am researching different possibilities for creating my website. At first sight, iWeb seems excellent, but I am very puzzled at certain features of iWeb, for example, if one doesn't publish to .Mac, it apparently is not possible to allow users to enter comments on your blog.
    What is that all about.?
It seems that the originators of iWeb are saying "dont use iWeb if you want a website which works really well in all respects. - certain useful features are reserved only for a clique of paying members". I cant understand the thinking behind this aproach, or am I missing something?

It is certainly possible that part of Apple's choices relate to wanting folks to use .mac. But it is also related to Apple's purpose of creating a website creation application for folks with no knowledge (and no interest in) html css, etc. It is also consistent with Apple's tendancy to want to control software and hardware in order to provide the best experience possible. Folks get some nice "advanced" features for the websites without having to know how to configure them to work with different hosts.
In terms of commenting on blogs, I am guessing that it takes special server set-ups and/or scripts to handle commenting. Apple has .mac and iWeb set up to work together, but that setup presumably doesn't work with other hosts. (And let me emphasize that I am only guessing here....I don't know much about the technical aspects of websites, servers, etc.)
All that said, if you are willing to do some post-publishing work, it is possible to use comments if you are publishing to a non .mac host. There is a program called iComment that, in combination, lets you use the Haloscan service to do comments. There may be other approaches as well.
Most of the .mac-only features can be replicated when publishing to other hosts, if one is willing to do some post-publising editing.
I publish to .mac, so I'm not familiar with the ins and outs of the process, but there are others here who have done it.
There have also been rumors that the next release of iWeb will include easier ways to add html code to iWeb websites. Originally there was some hope that iLife 07 would be announced at WWDC earlier this month. But I am beginning to think that there won't be an iLife 07, that we will all have to wait until 2008 for a new version of iLife (of which iWeb is a part).

  • Create users in iWeb for the blog area

    Hi all,
I'm creating a new website with this wonderful tool called iWeb, the point of the whole website is to make it available for those people interested in work on it. I was wondering if is possible to create different users to limit the comments within the blog area, something that you can do quickly in blogger, instead of leave open the comment area to whoever will read our magazine, if so, could you tell me how can I do that?, even if there is a external-nifty tool, that would be great!.
    Thanks in advance
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

If publishing to a .Mac space, you can password
    protect the site, and blog.
It'll still only allow for comments, rather than
allowing users to create new blog entries, but at
leat you'll know it's by one of those you have
    allowed in.
I expected something like that to be honest with you, the whole point is to have the website open and at the same time use several users to work on it, apparently it is not possible, I will send a new form to request an improvement on iWeb for that.
Thanks very much for your answer

  • Can anyone recommend a programmer that can fix iWeb for Internet Explorer?

Can anyone recommend a programmer that can fix iWeb for Internet Explorer? I had one experienced source from GetaFreelancer.com who did a 17 page fix for $25. He would have done commented code for $40 so I could do the fixes myself afterward but he is not available right now. Guru.com yielded no comparable sources. Elance has a $50 minimum. All the other bids were in the hundreds of dollars without the commented code.

The image on the right of your index page needs pulling down a bit, it looks messy covering the top banner.
Secondly, you've changed quite a lot on your page so this makes life harder for everyone. For example, now at the bottom of the page in fireFox I see 'IP' on the line below the rest of the details, but because you changed things I now don't know whether that's because of my screen resolution or your coding. Is it still on one line for you?
The problem with your columns may partly be based on the fact that you have a variety of span classes effectively achieving the same thing, and there are lots of unnecessary bits of code. How much of this is iWeb and how much is you I don't know. You've got an li class, a paragraph class, a written-out span class and some kind of specified bullet class all for one sentence. You only need one, maximum two of those things. Even if it's not conflicting and that's not the reason why it looks messed up, you'd do better to strip the code of all the unnecessary rubbish.
To do this with help I recommend someone who is familiar with iWeb and has access to it in front of them. A professional programmer won't be able to help you, because they can't really tell which bits are generated by iWeb and which parts you can actually change.
I recommend starting with a blank page and creating your columns and text without any styling other than bullets. Check it in both IE and FF. Then slowly begin to add your styling back in until you see if there's a problem. Finally, put the text on a (new) page which has your full website styling and see if there's a conflict between your page layout code and your page text code.

  • How to use IWEB for multiple websites?

    Okay.
I have two websites. One on a 3rd party, one on .MAC.
    Computer 1 = .MAC website
    Computer 2= 3rd party website
I want to use computer 2 to edit my .MAC website and moved the DOMAIN file but haven't open it in iWEB on the second computer as I need to know how to open and not destroy the 3rd party website.
    How is this done?
    Thanks.

You can rename the domain file to something descriptive of the site and open them manually. But I find it much safer to use iWebSites for managing multiple sites, over 25. I use iWebSites to manage multiple sites.. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites. Be sure to make a backup copy of your original Domain.sites files before starting the splitting process.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want.

  • Would like to use iWeb for a photography website

    Hi all,
Please bear with me on this. The question I am going to raise has been asked on the forum in bits and pieces but don’t think I was able to find a comprehensive solution to it.
I currently maintain a photography website which is hosted overat my-expressions.com. Link - http://staticmemory.my-expressions.com/
I love (for the most part) how I have got my site laid out here. The problem is that the host is no longer supporting the platform and hence it means no additional storage space to buy, etc. Basically the hosting platform is going to be abandon-ware in the next few months. Hence, I have decided to build something out on my own. Have purchased a domain and currently have got it to point to my existing photo site.
My Question – Now that you guys have the context, I would like to use iWeb to replicate something similar and host the new site on my own domain. Unfortunately, I know no code but if there is something reasonable, I am willing to spend time and figure things out. I can really see how iWeb can come in handy to create the pages, etc. It’s the adding the comments piece underneath each photo and the option to purchase prints is what I am having concerns about. If you take a look at my website, you will see how one can click on the Purchase Print link right below each photo and that will provide them with options on the print size and then taket hem over to paypal. Works great in the current environment.
Any pointers on replicating the Comments and Purchase Printfunctionality in iWeb will be greatly appreciated!
    Cheers,
    RG

BNN, even though I understand what KT is saying, your thought resonates with mine. When it comes to building and maintaining my website, I see myself more as a photographer than as a web designer. Hence, even though Apple may not be actively developing (and we are guessing on this one, arent we) iWeb, the existing functionality should do plenty of good to me for next couple years at least.
That said, they released a point update a few days back and with the whole cloud thing building momentum and mobile me going for free, why would Apple want to pull the plug on such a fantastic product?

  • I've given up on iWeb for now...

Until it allows some very standard and useful features, I think I've given up on it.
I would like to be able to manually edit some html and not have iWeb overwrite it whenever I make a change afterwards. I would like to be able to open an existing site (even if only iWeb created sites on .mac) without having to manually copy the files from the originating computer.
iWeb should be smart enough to open your existing site on .mac - this seems a huge oversite on Apples part.
Finally, you should be able to set whether you want a high bandwidth site or not. Current sites are great if you have a 5mb connection but god forbid you visit one on dialup. Even something as simple as a slider that goes from low to high bandwidth for your site.
Some other suggestions that aren't as critical to me would be the ability to have commenting on your blogs, and the ability to create your own templates (maybe this exists and I'm just missing it somehow?).
Anwyay, sorry to rant, I'm sure some of this has been said before, but I just hope Apple reads this and takes it to heart - iWeb looks very promising but it is just not there yet in my opinion.

I've come to think that if you know what html is and have ever needed to use ftp, then iWeb will seem limiting and downright constraining.
On the other hand, I can truly say that were it not for iWeb, I wouldn't be blogging now. I can edit html by hand and have spent some time in .css, but when I'm doing something just for the heck of it (to make myself, and hopefully the readers, smile), I want the "effort" part of the equation to be as low as possible.
Like Keynote before it, there's something about iWeb that makes me want to use it. And creating with it is fun mainly because, while the results may not be perfect, the only thinking that goes into the creation is that of creating. And, since the Domain file is where all your data is held, an update to iWeb means that the next time you publish, your site automatically takes on whatever optimizations the update holds, again without having to tinker with the coding side of site creation.

  • Using IWEB for .mac homepage/photo gallery

I have Ilife '08 and am trying to marry the web page created in Iweb ('08) with my (older) .mac account (where my photo gallery resides).
How does one connect the beautiful IWEB '08 web page templates with one's separate photo gallery on .mac (which has been up for a while)?

At the bottom of the iWeb page click on "Web WIdgets", and then ".Mac Web Gallery" and select the page you want from the list. A widget will appear on the iWeb page which links to your .Mac Gallery page. Drag this where ever you want it.
Alternatively you can create a text or image hyperlink to your .Mac gallery and choose to open it in in a new window in the "link" inspector so that viewers don't have to leave your website completely.
