Is Java 6 runtime from Apple a security risk?

I want to install an older version of Adobe Creative Suite, CS5, which includes Adobe Photoshop on my iMac running Mavericks. I know that when Photoshop is run the first time, it requires Java 6 runtime, which can be downloaded from Apple. I've heard a lot of bad things about Java. Is Java a security risk, if it is not run as a pluggin in the browser?
And, I'm a little confused about Java versions. I've read that Apple took over support of Java 6, but Oracle still provides Java 7 and its security updates (which I've heard aren't very secure). So should I always stick with Java 6?

Um...Apple even goes so far as to use a security update to disable Java entirely that is too old.
While you can force the issue by not installing the security update, generally that is not recommended.
I agree though the whole thing has been mismanaged. Sadly so many web developers like client side webpage processing. That is far slower for older machines if it works at all.

Java Test indicates that Java 6 is running well on my Mac. But when trying to run online applications the mentioned error message appears.

Hi, Thanks for that further bug description In Your Last Message That Describes The Problem I Am Having perfectly and is exactly the same for me.
unfortunately that fix for my camera Powershot G6 does not work or apply as the view pictures switch is different on G6 is not usable during download as once you plug in DC/USB cable it turns off, and makes no diff and problem still exists exactly as you just described.

it has been 17 days since apple promised to get back to me within 3-5 days hopefully with a solution, but I have still not heard from them.
They blew me off, i guess, probably i will have to wait for new Yosemite OS update, which they pre-warned me could take as much as 6 months.
I cannot believe apple released this new update with such major bug issues for camera downloads and that horrible "Photos" pgm which has all sorts of downgrades in features, usefulness and new bugs compared to iPhotos which I just finally got used to and was much better software.
I am starting to lose faith in Apple and I am getting that Microsoft "FEEL" like I used to have when I was a PC user, which was why I originally switched to Apple computers in first place.
Oh well got my fingers crossed here.

I had the same problem after upgrading to Yosemite. Illustrator CS6 wouldn't open. I got a message saying I should 'install legacy Java SE6 runtime'.
The link didn't work - it lead to a blank page.
So I downloaded Java8 (latest version) from Oracle but didn't install it. Something told me this was not the right way to go (the problem was with Java SE6, not 8). I then called Apple (in the Netherlands, were I live) for help. I got none. The best they could do was blaming Adobe for the problem or me, for not having the latest Adobe CC app. Rubbish.
And then, magic. I tried to open Illustrator again, got the pop up message but this time the link worked. It took me to an official Apple page, with a link to download Java for OS X 2014-001. The problem is now solved.
If curious, this is the explanation Apple gives for the problem:
'Java for OS X 2014-001 includes installation improvements, and supersedes all previous versions of Java for OS X. This package installs the same version of Java 6 included in Java for OS X 2013-005. On systems that have not already installed Java for OS X 2012-006 or later, this update disables the Java SE 6 applet plug-in. To use applets on a web page, click on the region labeled 'missing plug-in' to download the latest version of the Java applet plug-in from Oracle.'

Why would you get help from Apple? You need to contact your credit card company and find out why the security code is invalid.

Hi, can someone tell me if it is possible to call javac from runtime. I need to do this because the class I need to compile must be filled with some data given by the user. I plan to write the class code in a file, let the user write some code lines at runtime, add this lines to the file and then call javac in order to compile the file and check if the user wrote his lines properly. I wonder if this makes sense, thanks for reading this and for your help.

If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer 2 of your questions) then you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple to get the questions reset.

The email seems genuine enough as it asks you to sign in with your Apple ID and password and takes you through to the Apple site but am a bit worried as they ask you in the section Update Your Apple account for bank and credit card details and for the security number on the back of the card. Also in the section where it asks for my mobile number it will only take 10 numbers and when ai try to put in the final (11th number) it won't let me. Sorry am new to all this and a bit confused!
