  • Windows 7 64-bit and need to install both 32bit and 64bit Oracle 11g client

    Hello
First I am sorry for asking what is probably a common knowledge answer from most in the forum. I just cannot find a straight forward answer searching these forums or via google.
We have Windows 7 64-bit planned as our next desktop upgrade. We have several Oracle databases, and all of the client software in our environment is 32 bit.
I want to try and be ahead of the curve so I want to deploy the latest 64-bit 11g client instead of our current client (10g 32bit).
The simple question is this: Can we actually do that with our 32bit application suite or do I need to install the 32bit client for 32bit applications side-by-side with the 64bit 11g Oracle client for future 64-bit clients?
For a follow up to that, if I do, then does anyone have good instructions on that? I found one article on this but it seemed custom and made use of the mklink command, so I have my doubts this is correct.
    Thanks

Thanks for the tip. What I wonder though is should I do that or does the 64-bit client have a 32-bit layer that works with 32-bit applications or, am I forced to still deploy a 32-bit client because of my 32-bit software?
    Thanks

For windows, first step ensure the services got created.
Start/Run/services.msc and click on the Standard tab (for slightly less clutter).
There should be 4 or 5 oracle entries, only two matter. The database instance service, ...ServiceXE and the listener ...TNSListener the others are not relevant for an XE install.
If the user that ran the installer program is not in the local administrators group, as stated in the install requirements documentation, more than likely the services did not get set up and the database won't exist.
If the services are there, try connecting and check the instance status. In a command box (Start/Run/cmd):
    sqlplus /nolog
    connect system
Password: <the system password entered in installer dialog ... >
    ... Connected.
    select status from v$instance;
    ... OPEN ...
If you get that far, might be something not quite right with the networking configuration, several things can prevent the Apex web pages (http://...:8080...) from working.
As far as your configuration files, the client (tnsnames.ora) has a different value for the host than your listener.ora. So one, or both, of those could be incorrect. Check the command box hostname output, ipconfig /all, a few things might need adjustment.
The tnsnames.ora only matters for making sqlnet connections via a tnsalias. The tnsalias could be anywhere, including on your local hostname. To use a tnsalias, add it to the a connect after the '@' symbol, i.e. connect system@xe to get a connection to your XE specified in the tnsnames.ora file.
If you want to change the listener configuration, the first thing to do is stop the listener, then make adjustments in the listener.ora, start the listener, and sqlplus ... connect system .... alter system register; to get the instance registered with the listener.

  • Installing Linux Package prior to 11G Install

I realize this is a Linux problem and not an Oracle problem, but if anyone has seen this I'd appreciate some "Linux newbie" advice.
I'm installing Oracle 11g on Fedora 8 following the guide at:
    http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/11g/OracleDB11gR1InstallationOnFedora8.php
The guide has certain packages that have to be installed, one of them being elfutils-libelf-0.*
When I run rpm -Uvh elfutils-libelf-0.* (from the guide), I get the following messages:
    error: Failed dependencies:
    elfutils-libelf-i386 = 0.131-1.fc8 is needed by (installed) elfutils-libs-0.131-1.fc8.i386
    elfutils-libelf-i386 = 0.131-1.fc8 is needed by (installed) elfutils-0.131-1.fc8.i386
    elfutils-libelf-i386 = 0.131-1.fc8 is needed by (installed) elfutils-libelf-devel-0.131-1.fc8.i386
This message seems to indicate that I should install elfutils-libelf-0.131-1.fc8.i386.rpm. Having downloaded the rpm however, when I try
rpm -Uvh elfutils-libelf-0.*, I get the message:
    Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
    package elfutils-libelf-0.131-1.fc8.i386 is already installed
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I check the Fedora 8 DVD and the packages related to elfutils* are:
    /Packages/elfutils-0.130-3.fc8.i386.rpm
    /Packages/elfutils-libelf-0.130-3.fc8.i386.rpm
    /Packages/elfutils-libelf-devel-0.130-3.fc8.i386.rpm
    /Packages/elfutils-libs-0.130-3.fc8.i386.rpm
However these packages on your boxes are version 0.131-1.fc8. So you should have upgraded the packages from somewhere. Can you try the following commands?
    #rpm -Uvh elfutils*

  • Windows 7 install of Oracle 11g R2 client hangs

The prior discussion was closed, but I have something to add, so I am opening a new thread.  The prior thread is Oracle 11g install hangs on windows 7
I found that the very final post, by user12924267 was correct and solved the problem for me.
The symptoms were the same or similar as what other users had reported.
On Windows 7 workstation, I ran the 11g r2 installer.  The installer would get to the point where it was checking system requirements, and then it would just hang there forever.
I tried disabling User Account Control (requiring a reboot), and that did not help.
I tried disabling the firewall, and that did not help.
However, the following command did work.  From the command prompt at the installation folder
         setup.exe -jreLoc C:\install\reinstall\sqldeveloper\jdk\jre
Then it went all the way through and installed successfully.
I don't think it really matters which Java folder you use.  I happened to have a Java folder that I knew worked (because I had previously successfully run SQL-Developer from it), and so I just re-used that same Java folder.  The default Java that comes with the 11g installer, is the one with the problem.

Pl confirm that you are following all of the steps in the Install Guide - http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e16774/toc.htm
Try re-installing with option "-logLevel" set to "finest" to see if additional information is captured in the install logs - http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/em.112/e12255/c_oui_appendix.htm#BABDADJE

  • "Invalid Java Home" when installing Oracle Weblogic 11g (10.3.1)

    Hi folks,
    I'm trying to install Oracle's Weblogic 11g (10.3.1)
The installer starts, but does not detect the JDK home (which I expected). It does however let you browse the file system to select a home. I've tried selecting the following:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Home
but I get an "Invalid Java Home" error.
According to the documentation, Weblogic should run on a 1.6 JDK.
I notice that there are a few other Java related issues on these forums. Does anybody have any clues?
It sounds like the Apple JDK needs patching to make it usable by some Java apps. Bring on the 10.6 Java patch!

Just letting everyone know that the answer can be found here:
    http://blogs.oracle.com/emorales/2009/06/weblogicover_mac_osx.html
It seems that we have to "dummy up" a jre/lib directory to fool the Weblogic JDK detection check.

  • Steps to follow for Installing Oracle SOA 11g in 64 bit Windows 7 machine

    Hi,
I have successfully installed Oracle SOA 11g components in Windows 32 bit machine by following the downloading the installers for Windows 32 bit and following the steps mentioned in the Quick Start Guide for SOA Suite and BPM Suite.
Now I am trying to install Oracle SOA components in Windows 7 64 bit machine. Are the installation steps I followed for 32 bit is applicable for 64 bit too?Or are there any difference?
In the download section of installers,I could see one for 32 bit, linux and generic. Can you guide me which one I need to download for 64 bit machine?
    Thanks in advance.

I followed for 32 bit is applicable for 64 bit too?Or are there any difference?Steps followed for 32 bit installation would be same as for 64 bit. The only difference would be 64 bit JDK as it's required for win 7 to run the installation binaries of SOA Suite.
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/java-se-jdk-7-download-432154.html
I could see one for 32 bit, linux and generic. Can you guide me which one I need to download for 64 bit machine? You can use even 32 bit installer for 64 bit machine ( it works like charm for DEV like environment)...
but as per Oracle doc they prefer to use generic installer.
