Is lack of support on Macbook Pros enough to go with a Dell?
I posted here about a month ago about what kind of Dell laptop to get, actually, whether the Dell Ubuntu laptops were sturdy. I came to the conclusion that probably the best Dell would be the business model Latitude D630.
However, my conscience has been aching at me. I really hate Microsoft and Vista and just the THOUGHT of supporting them makes me cringe. I know many others don't care as much as I do, I just DON'T wanna contribute towards that terrible product. No, I won't use it, but that doesn't change the fact that I am buying it and thus supporting it. And with the Dell Latitude D630 you have to get it with Windows.
So I started looking into Macbook Pros. I have always liked Mac OSX and genuinely wouldn't mind dual-booting Arch and Leopard.
HOWEVER, I am concerned. Not only do Macbooks cost so much in general, google and searching at your forum has shown that perhaps support for Mac hardware on Linux still isn't the best. I wouldn't want to buy a computer only to find that it is not really usable with Linux. ;-; Seeing as Linux IS my primary OS.
Well, for starters here is a spec comparison between the two with the specific modifications I would be making:
D630:
Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T9300 (2.50GHz) 6M L2 Cache, 800Mhz Dual Core
Video Card: 128MB NVIDIA® Quadro NVS 135M™
Wireless Card: Intel® 3945 802.11a/g Dual-Band Mini Card
MBP:
Processor: 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 256MB
Wireless Card: ??
And it has something called a Double-layer SuperDrive? Okay, I have no idea what that is. XD
So it seems like everything would pretty much run native on the Dell one, while on the Macbook it would be harder?
Would I get better performance out of the Dell and thus be wasting my money on the Macbook? From google I can see a lot of people have trouble with sound. x_X Would sound just not work and/or be bad quality? That woudn't be good. And with bad performance on the graphics card, skipping, etc. Okay, why? Isn't that all just Nvidia drivers? So the fact it's on a mac shouldn't matter, right? Will the Nvidia on the Dell perform better on Linux than the Nvidia on a Macbook Pro because of this? That just... makes no sense to me.
And the wireless? So is the wireless for the Dell native and the macbook not (for Linux) so the Dell's will perform better? Am I just gonna have a lot of problems trying to run Linux on a Macbook that I can't solve?
I mean, I've googled, but for those who have tried, what are some other problems I haven't mentioned I may have missed?
:? I'm just nervous. I hate Windows so much, but if I spend money on a machine that costs 500 dollars more only to find it performs significantly worse than the cheaper one would have, it would be x_X I'm just worried of possible huge problems. And don't understand precisely why they occur. If all else fails, I can get the Dell. My conscience will just feel REALLY guilty about it.
XD

If you're thinking about throwing down the dough for a Macbook Pro, I would recommend getting yourself a Lenovo T61. There's even one that comes with openSUSE and no Windows. You will also be able to get a machine with comparable specifications for less money.
I've been on pretty much the same arc as you. I'm looking at purchasing my next machine. I looked at the Dell XPS 1530 and the Latitudes. The Macbook Pro presentation is pretty nice, but when I thought about it, it seemed silly to pay all that money for an OS I wouldn't really use and what was basically commodity laptop hardware. Then I thought I'd look at the ThinkPads. I've got an older T43 that I got as a gift and it is great, but I thought that Thinkpads were much more costly than they really are. To my surprise their prices are very competitive with Dell's prices and they are much lower than Apple's prices. The T61 also looks pretty good, has very good construction quality and generally good Linux support to boot.
Anyway, just my $0.02, I know it's a bit off topic, but you might see something you like.

So back in October, I purchased a brand new Macbook Pro Retina (MBPr), fully loaded with top of the line specs. I was soooo excited to have Thunderbolt 2 tech which Intel AND Apple describes as having DisplayPort 1.2a compatibility - which up to this point is unfortunately NOT the case. The point of the information/questions and requests in this article is to engage a conversation about the issues of not having MST support after Apple falsely mislead their consumers to think otherwise - especially when it is clear the MBPr is capable. Please read on...
Apple advertises that the Thunderbolt 2 ports on BOTH the MBPr and the new Mac Pro (NMP) will have 4K Display support with the famed 20gb/sec Ports (DisplayPort 1.2 only requires a little above 17gb/sec). Now that the 10.9.1 update has been released, we have failed to see MST or Multi-Stream Transport enabled on the MBPr Late 2013. Now, as for the New Mac Pro- it DOES have MST enabled in 10.9.1 with the AMD GPUs. For all of you out there that's questioning what this means, short answer is basically the Mac Pro will be able to power a 4K Monitor at 60Hz through the Thunderbolt 2 Port but the New MBPr is stuck with only HDMI 1.4 support which tops out at 4K 30Hz. 30Hz is unacceptable for anything but movies or a photo slideshow. At 30Hz the cursor will jump across the screen, eliminating any of the benefits of 4K.
BUT it gets worse...
Apple can be seen advertising that the new MBPr 15" model can power a 4K monitor THROUGH the Thunderbolt 2 Port here: http://www.apple.com/thunderbolt - This article quotes the following:
"Now with Thunderbolt 2 built into the new Mac Pro and MacBook Pro with Retina display, you can connect the latest 4K desktop displays and get double the bandwidth for your peripherals. And the two generations of Thunderbolt technology are compatible with each other."
Does this not let the consumer assume that the newest MBPr will be able to drive a 4K display through the Thunderbolt 2 Port? I would say yes it does, but at the time I wrote this, the TB2 Ports can't power a 4K display because, as previously stated, MST is disabled in Mavericks for the 15" MBPr Late 2013.
NOW, later on Apple posted the following article on 4K support here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6008
4K support on the MacBook Pro (Retina, Late 2013)
MacBook Pro supports 4K displays and Ultra HD TVs at the following resolutions and refresh rates with the built-in HDMI port:
3840 x 2160 at 30 Hz refresh rate
4096 x 2160 at 24 Hz refresh rate (mirroring is not supported at this resolution)
In the article above the New Mac Pro is listed as having support for a 4K Display with the Thunderbolt 2 Port (or MST DisplayPort 1.2a Technology) at 60Hz with no problem. This leads myself and many others to believe that MST will NEVER be enabled on the newest MacBook Pro Retina with Nvidia GPUs. Yes, 4K IS supported but ONLY through the HDMI 1.4 port, which has the limitation of only 30hz. This two-faced advertising is extremely upsetting to a LOT of people, including myself.
Interestingly enough, THIS IS NOT a hardware issue. If one ventures into Windows 8.1 via Bootcamp and connects a 4K Display via the Thunderbolt 2 (or through DP1.2) Port, the Display registers at 60Hz, thus proving that the Thundberbolt 2 Hub Controller is completely capable of MST DisplayPort functionality. Clearly this a driver issue with Apple, Nvidia or Intel or any combination. What Apple has done here is forcing any professional that desires stable and clear 4K technology through their MacBook Pro Retina to do so only using Windows 8.1 on their own machines! Definitely an oxymoron if you ask me...
Later on when the Mac Pro was ready for ordering, Apple placed the Sharp PN-K321 as a compatible option for a 4K Display. On the Store page featuring the (over three thousand dollar) Sharp 4K display, located here http://store.apple.com/us/product/HD971LL/A/sharp-32-pn-k321-4k-ultra-hd-led-mon itor?fnode=53 Apple states the following:
"Note that 4K DisplayPort operation is only compatible with the new Mac Pro (Late 2013)."
All of that being said, and I'm terribly sorry for my wordy ranting...
This brings me to a final two requests to ANYONE reading this post:
a) Has anyone working with the new 10.9.2 Beta Update seen evidence that DisplayPort 1.2 capabilities will be enabled for the new MacBook Pro Retina (Nvidia 750M) with the promised "Graphics Driver Updates" within the next Mavericks update?
and
b) To others that purchased or were/are thinking of purchasing a new MacBook Pro Retina with TB2 Ports: If you are just as upset as me about this crushing blow to consumers that just purchased a $3,000 laptop that were promised something that wasn't delivered - I urge you please, write to Apple and let them know they are making a mistake. You can do this though the support page or through http://www.apple.com/feedback
Thank you for your precious time, and if anyone has anything to contribute to this issue, please jump in....GOOD NEWS!
The Mavericks 10.9.3 update adds official support for Thunderbolt 2, 4K!
I'm not sure if you will be able to daisy chain anything to the 4K display. I've read that the design of Thunderbolt 2 includes support for DisplayPort 1.2 multi-stream (MST), which allows this type of daisy chaining with 4K, but we don't know if Apple has this supported on it's machines. Apparently it's been buggy in development because the graphics driver needs to work correctly with the Thunderbolt 2 host controller. I'm sure they will work it out if they haven't already.
The above is all via found information on this topic, but you can follow some more discussion here:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1713876
One more note on Thunderbolt worth sharing: always keep your fastest peripherals closer to the computer in the chain. If you have a TB1 device directly connected to the computer, anything further down the chain will be limited to TB1 speed/capability regardless of it's native speed. Always connect TB2 devices first, and save anything TB1 for the end of the chain. -
128 MB video ram on a macbook pro - enough to drive the new 30"?
128 MB video ram on a macbook pro - enough to drive the new 30"?
meaning, can it do this well???Even 16 MB VRAM would be enough to display a 2D picture on the 30".
Depending on 3D usage you need much VRAM.
Unless you are using a lot of the latest 3D games or Apples 3D pro apps (Motion/Shake or something like that) 128 MB should be fine. -
Why is not Windows 8 natively supported on MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010)?
Hello,
Can somebody from apple say why they don't add native support of Windows 8 for MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) when it is supported on 15-inch model?
Looking in: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634
I know that Windows 8 is possible to install and use, but I think it does not make sense to limiting just 13-inch model in bootcamp
ThanksWelcome to the Apple Support Communities
It's a restriction, because the Mid 2010 13-inch MacBook Pro is completely compatible with Windows 8 (it meets all its requirements), but Apple didn't want to provide Windows 8 Boot Camp drivers for it. You can run Windows 8 if you want, but it won't work properly.
Apart from that, there are some how-to's in the Internet in order to install Windows 8 Boot Camp drivers in unsupported Macs -

i have a macbook pro 15" retina Display with 2.6 ghz and 8gb of ram when i try to download an HD movie from itunes it says my computer doesn't support HD? i went to the support on the apple website and looked at the specs that a computer has to meet in order to play HD movies and mine is well above them. Why can't i play the movies?
That would at least partially explain it.
These MacBook Pros drew more power than the power brick could readily supply, and so would only run at top speed when the power brick was supplemented by the battery.
Though the applicable tech note has been removed, it stated:
"If the battery is removed from a MacBook or MacBook Pro, the computer will automatically reduce the processor speed. This prevents the computer from shutting down if it demands more power than the A/C adapter alone can provide." -
HT1846 which edition of windows 32 or 64 bit are supported by macbook pro late 2011
which edition of windows (32 or 64 bit) are supported by macbook pro late 2011
I would go so far as to say there is no reason or need for there to even be 32-bit version.
64-bit has better memory and graphic handling with whatever you have.

Can my MacBook Pro use boot camp with Windows 7 with BitLocker encryption?
I'm at wit's end with this, and I'm hoping I can get some advice here. I've read so many forum, posts and reviews that I'm not entirely sure what I can trust.
I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (MacBookPro8,3). I need to run Windows encrypted for work purposes. It needs to be real windows with full-disk encryption (FDE). The business tools run in boot camp, but not in Parallels, because Parallels doesn't support DirectX 11. I would also benefit greatly from an SSD.
I do not want to do anything hacky like removing the Mac reocovery partition, because I've read that just loading Disk Utility in OS X might mess up your patrition boot tables as it tries to "fix" things. I don't want to have to manually reocover to fix stuff or chance losing data.
I have read (and tried) installing BitLocker on Windows 7 Ultimate under boot camp, but ran into the partition limit on my internal HDD. A maximum of 4 partitions are allowed, and between OS X, its recovery, boot camp, and the Windows partition, all 4 are used.
I have considered one of the following, which may work:
Install OWC's Data Doubler Kit with an additional 240GB SSD (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DDMBS6E240/). I would replace the internal SuperDrive with the HDD, and install the new SSD on the faster SATA 6G port. Windows would be installed on the SSD and OS X would stay on the HDD.
Replace the internal HDD with a new SSD (keeping the SuperDrive). I would lose OS X altogether and just have Windows installed.
Forget the entire thing and just buy a PC for work.
My thoughts are that with option both options #1 and #2, I don't even know if these setups will allow BitLocker. In both cases, Windows will be the only partition on the drive, so I'm assuming that when BitLocker is installed, there will be room for the new partition it creates. With option #1, I'm pretty sure I'd still be using Boot Camp, but how would that would for option #2? Is boot camp used even though there is no Mac partition? Would I still need to keey the Mac Recovery partition for this to work? I'd probably need to use Boot Camp drivers under Windows, I think.
I'd certainly be interested in using a self-encrypting drive (SED), especially a SSD, but I'm concerned that most of them appear to require TPM or BIOS functions that Mac's EFI does not provide. Such a drive would allow me to drop BitLocker, but I would need to be use the self-encryption actually works on this setup. From what I've read, most of the SED drives will work just fine under EFI, but you won't be able to set or access the encryption password, which pretty much makes these drives unencrypted.
I've read that BitLocker can be configured to use a flash drive as a decryption key, but I haven't been able to test that yet. I'm tried creating bootable flash drives under Windows and OS X, and none of them seem to appear when I access the boot menu (hold option during boot chime). I don't even know if this system supports bootable USB flash drives, or whether they can be used as a BitLocker key under boot camp.
For the record, I have attempted to use an external thunderbolt drive as my Windows partition, but Windows doesn't want to be installed on removable media, and even if it worked, I believe you can only boot OS X from thunderbolt. I do have a second OS X install booting from the thunderbolt drive, so I know that works. Also, FileVault 2 is installed on my OS X partition, and I read something about FV2 using the Recovery partition somehow so you can't remove the recovery partition to make room for BitLocker.
So ... does anyone have any suggestions preferably based on personal experience as to whether options #1 or #2 should work for my needs?
At this point, I'm really thinking I should just bite the bullet and purchase a PC that I will forever look down upon. Are you using a MacBook Pro? Is everything installed on the same drive?
I would love to know how that install was performed. When I install Windows under boot camp, my MacBook Pro drive ends up with 4 partitions: Mac, Mac Recovery, Windows, and a small partition that I believe is used by boot camp.
Installing BitLocker on Windows requires the creation of a new small partition that Windows will boot off. The small partition is unencrypted, while the primary Windows partition will get encrypted. The following post discusses the maximum partition issue: https://discussions.apple.com/message/22753791#22753791
Has anyone installed Windows through boot camp on it's own drive, and if so, can BitLocker be installed on that without reaching any partition limit? I'm assuming that's possible, but would like to know before I spend hundreds on new hardware. -
Installing Tiger on a Macbook Pro that came only with Leopard
Hi guys,
Any ideas on how to install Tiger onto a Macbook Pro that came preloaded with Leopard, and only has a Leopard disc?
I've got a refurbished Macbook Pro recently. Realised that one of my application doesn't work, Capture One Pro. Visited Phase One's website and they said it only supports 3.9 and above at the time it was released, which makes it 10.4.10.
Systems in the story below: Macbook Pro Core Cuo. Macbook Pro C2D (new set), Mac Pro, iMac Core 2 Duo
Here's what I've tried
1. I've an original disk that came with my MBP CD. When I try to boot from that disk on my MBP C2D, it gives me the crash screen -> "please hold the power for secs to restart".
2. I've tried installing Tiger onto my iMac and did a harddisk clone via Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) to my MBP CD. Tiger was able to run on my MBP CD fine.
3. Then I tried using CCC to clone it over to my MBP C2D. It doesn't work. Shows me the crash screen.
4. I've tried installing Tiger on my Mac Pro. Used CCC to clone over the disk image to MBP C2D. Doesn't work too. Crash screen.
5. Created disk images of Tiger with Disk Utility on iMac, Mac Pro. Tried to restore using the iMac, Mac Pro disk images of Tiger. Doesn't work. Shows me the crash screen.
6. Updated Tiger to 10.4.11 on my Mac Pro. Created disk image using Disk Utility. Restored MBP C2D with it. Crash screen on load.
I'm out of ideas and Apple Support won't open until Monday.
It seems that this MBP C2D is set on not installing Tiger, no matter what. Wonder if getting hold of a Tiger retail disc will do the trick? You can install tiger onto a MacBook Pro up to version 3,1.
Run System Profiler and under hardware:

About Flashback malware
Back up all data, if you haven't already done so.
Select ▹ Software Update to install the latest Java update (if Java is already installed) or the Flashback malware removal tool (if Java is not installed under Lion), as well as any other available updates. Installing either of those items should clear the infection in most cases. You must update to the latest version of Mac OS X 10.6 or 10.7 before you can install the Java update.
The removal tool runs automatically in the background and is then deleted. Don’t look for something to click. If the malware is removed, you’ll be notified.

How to connect MacBook Pro 17" Mountain Lion with HDMI port on TV, Panasonic TC-P55ST50
Any experience with cables for connecting MacBook Pro 17" Mountain Lion with HDMI port on TV, Panasonic TC-P55ST50 (or similar)?
It depend upon the model (age) of you MBP. If you have a Thunderbolt or minidisplay port, then you will need a minidisplay/HDMI adapter.

Or you can get an all in one:

If you have an older mac with a DVI port, you will need something like this:

Note that audio is supported via HDMI for MBPs 2010 and later. Earlier ones require tapping the audio output port.

I have a 3rd gen Ipod touch. When I connect it to my Macbook pro to sync it with itunes, it doesn't show up on iTunes. When I connect my iPhone 6 to my computer it syncs, backs up, ect. How do I make this older iPod show up on my iTunes?
Hi ChristianHelpplz,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It seems like your iPod touch is not recognized by iTunes on your Mac, but your iPhone 6 is working normally.
I recommend starting with these steps to troubleshoot your iPod touch and connection with your Mac:
Check your USB connections
Unplug other USB devices from your Mac and try again.
Try a different USB port.
Try a different USB cable.
Restart your device
Restart your iOS device or reset your iPod.
Restart your Mac
Turn your Mac off and back on.
Update your software
Check for software updates on your Mac.
Check for an iTunes update.
Check your security software
If you have security software installed, learn how to resolve issues between iTunes and your security software.

If you've tried these steps and your iPod touch is still not recognized, try placing it into Recovery Mode next:

As far as I know, you can't use iTunes with Windows Me. I knew that when I bought my iPod, but I figured surely I'd be able to use it without iTunes--with a different program, maybe, like Winamp. Apparently not: my computer wouldn't recognize the iPo
