Is Leopard a can of worms?

Is Leopard a can of worms? If I had known what it would not do, I would never have upgraded.
For example, I cannot open any photographs in Photoshop anymore because I have Photoshop 7, and Leopard will not open it. Upgrade Photoshop? Why would I have to do that when Photoshop 7 does everything I want?
I spent hours putting my music into the i-tunes library and then dividing the music into Playlists. I have hundreds of classical and modern music in i-tunes. After Leopard, all of the Playlists I made do not have any of the music or tunes I put into them. They are empty. When I first tried to open i-tunes I received the message “the i-tunes library cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of i-tunes.” How is that possible? I tried several times with the same result. Then I went to a separate hard disk that I had with the music saved and opened i-tunes. I was then able to access the library but still all of the Playlists I had made are empty.
I have 3,000 plus family names in a genealogy file with charts and information about each family. None of this can be opened because Leopard says “Cannot open because Classic
Environment no longer supported.” Some comment was made in this forum that you should be upgrading so Classic is not longer needed. These files were prepared years ago with programs that no longer exist so upgrading is impossible.
Why does everyone continue to say always backup so it will not be lost. What they overlook is that backup is no good if you cant open the backup. All of the backups I have on CDs and two separate hard disks for my genealogy files are useless because they cannot be opened with Leopard.
I have always had a very high regard for Apple. I started with Apple computers when they first started making them and switched to a PC only because there were some programs I needed that Apple did not support. A little over a year ago I went back to Apple and bought a 20” IMac with Panther. Within 30 days Apple came out with Tiger, but there was no recourse for those who had bought the Panther version even though there was no warning that Panther would be obsolete within 30 days.
Am I missing something here? Are the additions that Leopard provides worth the loss of the files I use and need?
Is there any solution to these problems? Or do I have to go back and try to reinstall Panther? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to Apple Discussions. Please take what follows as being offered in a good, but realistic spirit....
- Adobe posted information about its applications' compatibility before Leopard was released. Photoshop 7 is about five years old. There have been three major upgrades to Photoshop since 2002. It's reasonable to expect that Photoshop 7 would not continue to work indefinitely. You are fortunate, however, that the ~$199 upgrade to CS3 is available to users of Photoshop 7.
- iTunes 7.4.2 was available for Tiger, as well, so chances are that your issue is unrelated to Leopard. Hopefully, the iTunes Library and iTunes Music Library.xml files from your Tiger installation are backed up. You should post about this in the appropriate iTunes forum.
- The genealogy software issue is unfortunate, but it hasn't exactly been a secret that Classic support would be lost in 10.5. In any event, compatibility with third-party software should be sorted out before upgrading an OS, not after.

Tiger has been out for well over two years. Like Leopard, there was no surprise about when it was going to be released.

Honestly, these are questions that need to be asked before upgrading an OS, not after.

Go out and buy yourself an external hard drive for $100-200 and reinstall Panther for situations in which Leopard doesn't work for you.
Good luck!

    Hi there,
I found that Time Machine in Mavericks will sort it all out for you. You shouldn't need to buy another backup drive, unless you have insufficient space left and can't afford to delete whats on there. It should just work fine.

  • Installed Leopard and can no longer connect to my shared hard drive

I had a sweet set up with a Drobo (fancy external hard drive) connected to my Airport Extreme base station. Before I upgraded to Leopard, my MacBook Pro would discover the Drobo disk and run scheduled backups without me having to do anything.
Since I installed Leopard, I can see the Drobo disk in the Finder under SHARED > Airport but I cannot access it. It won't accept my password to connect to it. What's really weird/dumb is that I can use Airport Utility to reset the password and change whatever settings I like... but when it comes to actually using the disk, I'm locked out.
    Anyone know what's going on?

    Podcast Update:
Jason O’Grady on today’s PowerPage podcast said that in the beta builds of leopard time machine supported airport extreme’s airport disk feature. They only dropped it in the release version of leopard. He’s confident this functionality will return.
But on today’s MacBreak Weekly podcast, Leo Laporte said as much as he loves his drobo it’s LOUD when it’s working. I wonder if one of his drives is failing. He also said he prefers a backup program called ChronoSync. I’ve never used it.

Stick the 10.6 disk into the machine and reboot holding the option/alt key down on a wired/built in keyboard.
On the second screen, under the Utilities menu is a Password Reset, use it.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
What this will do is reset the password and the user account permissions in the process.
You might have problems with Keychain afterwards, to fix that.

  • CS3 & CS4 loaded on Leopard. Can CS3 be uninstalled safely?

    Hi,
I have the complete CS3 design Extended & CS4 Design Extended loaded on Leopard. Can CS3 Extended be uninstalled safely? If so what's the correct way to do it without impacting my CS4 Extended and LightRoom 2.2 installations?

You might want to wait and make sure that everything works the way you think it should. For instance - printing to Epson printers from CS4 and Leopard is impossible using the Epson drivers if you are expecting the same results you got in CS3. It doesn't hurt to have more than one version on your system and can sometimes help.
If you really want to take it off, you can use the uninstaller on the original install disk.

    To expand on Niels post...
First you need to check that your current Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...
    Snow Leopard Specs:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
If it does... then you need to Purchase and Install the Snow Leopard Disc,
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
( It should be noted that Apple will send paid MobileMe members the Mac OS X 10.6 DVD for free.)

  • Just installed snow leopard and can't open any of my word docs?

Just installed snow leopard and can't open any of my word docs?

Depends on what you're doing; SL doesn't really support Office docs directly. In Snow Leopard, TextEdit can open Word docs, albeit with little fidelity for anything beyond text. Try iWork if you need to really work with Word docs (note that even then it's an import/export process and not native support).

You don't need to reinstall Leopard.
You can reinstall Safari from here >  Safari 5.0.6 for Leopard

  • Upgraded to Leopard and can't Print

    Hello,
Ever since I upgraded to Leopard I can't print to my HP 1115. I can print test pages just fine and if I send a normal document from any application and then put my computer to sleep when re-waken it, it will print the document, however the quality is very poor.
I'm running version 10.5.4 on a PowerPC G5. I've tried printing from Photoshop CS, Mail, Safari, and TextEdit.
    Any suggestions are welcome!

Hmmm, I will have to see if I still have the install disks I've had this printer for probably 5 years! When I first got my Mac computer with Tiger installed I didn't have to install anything, just plug-in and go. Normally I wouldn't need the disks for printers or scanners its just so much easier to go to the site and download the drivers, mac or PC. That way you don't get any of the extra junk they often have on the disk.
Where would you look for "Pacifist"? Utilities? I'll try doing a search when I get home to see if I can find it myself but I thought I might ask...
I read on another internet page about uninstalling the HP drivers and than re-installing the one they provide. They discribe the same problem I'm having and claim it will fix it. I couldn't do it though because I didn't know how to completely uninstall all the HP drivers on my computer.

  • A Can of Worms

I know I'm opening up a can of worms with the question I am about to ask. This was prompted by an article in today's newspaper. It has been suggested that the use of cell phones, both talking and texting, be federally banned. Opinions, please. Personally, I think texting should be banned, talking from personal experience with my run in with a texter while driving. But talking, especially if you have a handless device, I don't know. So many things can be distracting while driving, why only talking on cell phones?

Well mortb this question can have many spins an turns on it. Do we take it away or leave it alone!
But one thing we all should know when we are at the wheel were in charge of the biggest an deadliest wepon there is. And 100% of our focus should be the Road an unfortunatly this is'nt always the case. An some how it needs to be Balanced for the safety of everyone.
But this is not going to be a easy thing to fix as every one lives with there phones it's a part of life an for the ladies out there being on a cellphone is no different than tending to the Kids , puttin on Make up,  or fixing there hair. For the guys its slightly different but still in a way it's the same.
But if Uncle Sam has his way an most of the time he does cellphones use in newer vehicle's especially "Semi Trucks" as we know it may become a thing in the past. or may be Limited for use only when the vehicle is in a parked position. An for older cars that's on the road they could totaly ban cellphone use in them unless a device can be installed in them to do as the same as what would be in a newer vehicle's setup.
This what i wrote to some might be hogwash but the accidents that could have been prevented from talking or Texting or ones in the future!  way heavy on should there be a ban. it's your choice to decide but think about the next time you strap your self an your Children in  your vehicle an your driving down the road an you get a phone call do ya wanna answer it while driving or do i want to wait till i can safelly pull over.  Then Take the Call...
Happy Holidays to all an Happy new year.!  B33
