Is Leopard Server 10.5 ready for action?

I currently have a xserve with tiger server running on it and I am using zimbra to handle our mail functions. But I am running into problems with zimbra. I was thinking of just wiping the xserver and installing leopard it to run Mail, Icalendar and use time machine services.
So I was hoping that people wouldn’t mind sharing there leopard server experiences with me to help me get a fell if I should wait to install leopard or just keep using Tigard with out zimbra.
Thank you all

To answer your question one would need to know your exact requirements. How many users? Domains? etc.... Also, what issues are you having with Zimbra and so on.

  • Exchange alternative for Mac Snow Leopard Server

I was wondering what are some good alternatives to Microsoft's Exchange service for use in the new Snow Leopard Server that will be coming out. I am aware that Snow Leopard Server offers open source for mail server, but I would like to go with an actual GUI interface with a third party software. Any suggestions would be great!

You will not be able to do any extensive management of Active Directory from with Mac OS X natively,
and considering the technology, it's best managed using the native Microsoft tools & technologies anyway. There are products that offer options for Mac management from/via AD - beyond what Apple provides and/or is possible by extending your schema, but that's _another matter entirely_.
"Closest thing" is really for you to decide, you will need to investigate the products and if they will meet your needs.
As I have stated, what we know will be available in & via Snow Leopard is what Apple has made known on its own preview pages.
If you needed to seriously know more you would have invested in a ADC Developer account and extensive testing but with the understanding you would be dealing with pre-release technology.
Past that, the two products that offer the most in terms of feature-set(s) are as I already noted:
    Kerio
    and
    Zimbra.
    Best of luck !

  • Leopard Server beta testers:  Anyone have it actually working?

I am beta testing Leopard Server 10 client version for only $499.
Anyone have Leopard Server running without problems?
Just want to know if anyone out there has gotten server to work for them?
    Thanks

I gave Leopard server a try today. Here's my experience:
I use SoftRaid 3.6.4 as the raid driver on my G4 XServe with 4 ATA drives in the server and two external FireWire drives. Two of the internal drives are one Raid 0 volume and the 10.4 boot drive.
I used SuperDuper to make a backup image of my OS X Server boot drive, which is one logical volume on two physical disks.... in a RAID 0 configuration internal drives on the XServe. The backup is a single disk in a firewire external Granite enclosure. I booted from the cloned copy and ran for a while just to make sure the clone was good. No problems yet.
I then booted the Leopard Server CD and was able to do an UPGRADE install on the external firewire drive image. This process went smoothly with no problems.
Unfortunately, Leopard server is another story. The upgraded system isn't doing well: I couldn't get Apple Remote desktop from my laptop to connect to Leopard nor was I able to get the IMAP email server to work. Client machines just sat and "spinned" trying to make a connection. Had to monkey around with permissions to get 10.5 web pages working using Safari running on the Server. These pages worked perfectly on 10.4 with the same permissions. When trying to access the web pages from a client on the same subnet, was unable to connect. Web services were running fine and the firewall settings seemed OK so I'm not sure what is going on. So I powered down the external drive and will wait a and think about trying the upgrade again. Kind of wasted 4 or 5 hours today hoping this upgrade would be smoother.
I'll probably start over and do a clean install and export and import settings to 10.5. Not a particularly fun prospect.....
Leopard client was a simple process to move from 10.4 to 10.5. Leopard Server looks like a lot of work and hassle to me at this time.

  • OSX LION SERVER on Mac Mini for a home media server?

Would a Mac Mini with Mac OS X Lion Server be a good alternative for a home multi media movie server?
    Has anyone done this?
If so please give advice or success stories vs. HP Home Media Smart Server (i added a link to the HP server)
    http://www.hp.com/canada/products/landing/mediasmart/ex.html
I would really rather use a Mac product but not sure what Apple offers and  if it will do the same or better than the HP Media Smart Server.
Again, any advice would be great.
    Cheers,

It would make a great server. Bonus over Apple TV for example is that you have access via both wired ethernet and wireless. Plus if you load tools from XBMC, Firecore and others you have a significant media server. Cost is right too.
Many people are doing this - google mac mini media server or other for more info.
Total downside to any windows based system - dealing with constant anti-virus, major security hassels, lack of true media integration and PITA to update, etc.
You should be aware that Lion Server is not ready for prime time - it stil has significant issues if you are migrating from SNL 10.6.8. If you buy an apple fresh Lion Server mac mini you should have no problems.
    You'll probably be pleased.

  • Setting up Snow Leopard Server with Address Book, iCal for Small Business

    Hello Folks,
I have a small business with 2-3 people and I want to setup Snow Leopard Server on a Mac Mini. I have everything in place, RAID, Backup drive etc.
What I need is a guide on how to setup the server correctly and how to setup Address Book Server, iCal Server, DNS, etc. I was in IT a long while back but have gone back to my creative roots and sworn off IT but I am in a situation where my IT guy's wife is pregnant so he is busy painting the baby's room, etc.
I was looking at Snow Leopard Server for Dummies and a few other books. Do you guys have any suggestions on resources for me to read or research that would give me very straightforward steps in getting this setup. I am at a point where I can re-install from scratch if needed.
For the ease of those that might respond let's assume I know my way around Mac and general networking as a whole.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
    Cheers,
    Jason

    Hi Guys,
First of, I will give you a brief background on me regarding networking as a mac user since 1994. I can setup and network multiple macs without a server in our home and small office. Turning file, print and internet sharing with a regular Mac OS X client version at no problem at all. This would be my first time setting up a Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server.
I'm in the same boat as Jakekub but we do not have a static IP from our DSL provider. We just bought a Mac Mini Server for our small office with 3 iMacs and 1 MacBook. We will just use the server for internal usage and to centralized things out and use some of server's features like Address Book, Mail, iCal etc. I've search the forums and found Orhidy's post here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2148553
I even followed the sample IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, DNS Server and I think I had it correctly setup initially. And I think I got it all running on the basic setup base on his instructions. So I tried to test my DNS settings via Terminal > hostname then got answer as
    servername.companyname.private
And double checking DNS again with a command: sudo changeip - checkhostname and was given an answer of:
    Primary address = 192.168.1.192
    Current Hostname = servername.companyname.private
    DNS Hostname = servername.companyname.private
The names match. There is nothing to change
    dirserv:success = "success"
But here's another one that bugs me. I tried to follow from "Mac OS X Snow Leopard for Dummies" the command line:
    NSLOOKUP hostname
    and got an answer of:
;; Got SERVFAIL reply from 192.168.1.192, trying next server
    Server: 192.168.1.1
    Address: 192.168.1.1#53
** server can't find hostname: NXDOMAIN
So does it mean that I still haven't configured my server properly?
Thank you all for the help in advance!

  • Can I use Leopard Server for a few things without a static IP/DNS mapping?

Caveat: I'm pretty capable at setting up and running macs, but not a crack server admin or anything like that. I don't write code and my eyes start to glaze over when you start talking about Kerbos and the like...
Question: I'd like to use Leopard server for a few things on my local network - with some vpn access to the same services:
    - iCal server (the most important feature) for 3 users
    - File server services for Time Machine (yes, base Leopard can do this)
    - vpn access into the iCal server for one user
Do I have to go through the headache of switching over from a dynamic IP to a static IP, setting up DNS mapping, etc? Or is there a simpler way?
    Any help appreciated. Thanks

  • DNS/web-server hosted off-site. How to set up Leopard server for mail?

    Hey Everyone,
Brand new xserve with leopard server 10.5.2. Currently, Our web and DNS server for our domain,"company.com" is co-located off-site with an MX record of "mail.company.com" pointed at the static IP of the office where our mail server is. I want to replace the mail server with the xserve. With that in mind, how do I configure the DNS on the xserve during initial configuration to reflect that? Give it a self-referencing FQDN like server.company.office and see if the mail service can handle the domain hosted elsewhere?
I'm pretty new to servers and would love be able to keep this all in Standard but I'm not afraid to jump into Advanced if need be. I've created a test domain through GoDaddy of "company2.com" with an MX record of "mail.company2.com" pointing at the IP address of the xserve. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Setting up a leopard server for the first time in live office environment

    Hi
After a lot of reading and testing in a small LAN setup, Im going to install and setup leopard server in a small business, with max 10 employees.
Any hints on what I should expect? Any advice on most clever approach?
In the Server Administration Document there is a sample setup in chapter 9. I plan on following this, but will the employess(clients) be able to access the Internet while installation is in progress?
    Any advice is appreciated.

I have to use the servers IP address when accessing iCal or wiki or any other service I guess.
I'm not sure what to do to get leopard.mydomain.com to work in my setup. We have a hosting firm to host our mail and web and they control the dns. Do I contact them to add a record for leopard.mydomain.com?
First (and in general) I'd only use and have publicly-registered domain names here.
I'd avoid use any domains that I didn't have registered.
If you have public static IP addresses for your server(s), then I'd suggest deferring all public-facing DNS services and registrations to your ISP or hosting provider, and to your ISP's DNS servers. Your ISP or hosting provider (specifically for mail or public-facing services) would set the mail MX record and any DNS translation for the public static IP address of your Leopard server box.
If you are using private addresses inside a NAT perimeter (which doesn't work for public-facing service such as mail or non-VPN access to blogs and wikis and such), then you can use Leopard Server or (preferably) Snow Leopard Server DNS to serve up local addresses inside your perimeter, and the "local" DNS server can then forward requests for all zones that it is not authoritative for out to your ISP's DNS servers. You probably don't want to be running "public" DNS until you've a better handle on how DNS works; start with a "local" server and learn.

  • Using ms office 2008 for mac home & student edition with snow leopard serv

    Hi all,
I have a very particular question.
I have a new small business starting up and we want to make full use of leopard and snow leopard server in our infrastructure. We also want to use os x for all our client machines.
We want to use ms office 2008 for mac as our main offfice software but i believe we don't need all the uses or festures of the business edtion and i need to seek good advice and clarity on this.
We won't ever use any microsoft exchange servers but instead willl use the apple mail servers and all the other apple server services.
My question is, based on the fact that we will have an all apple mac os x backend and client frontend but want to use the ms office for mac as our business software, and also based on the fact that we wont use the "Build your Brand clip art, Build your skills by lynda.com, the Remote Desktop for mac 2, the Microsoft Exchange Server Support and the Microsoft Windows sharepoint services support, do we really need to go for the business edition? Can we not just use the home and student edition and get the same functionality using everything else apart form what we listed as we wont need these?
The other question is, the Entourage 2008, Web services Edition, will this work with an apple backend instead of ms exchange server?
Kind regards and thanks for your wise advice,
    Neil Watson

    Thanks, Kurt--I understand now.
One reason I was alarmed was that evidently when the tech installed Office 2008, something went awry with either the key installer or the key code, because when I finished the first two updates (12.1 and 12.2), I tried to open Entourage to see if the problem I'd been having was resolved. Instead of opening, Office gave me a message that my product key was invalid!  I did find the product key, and called the tech, who will come by to see what's wrong (he's an honest guy, so I'm sure it's a legitimate error of some kind, not a pirated copy). But the thought of installing two pages of updates and maybe running into the same glitch every time made me blanch.  So I'm glad to know that Microsoft is still doing Service Packs for 2008!

  • I want to install Snow Leopard Server on our MacPro (2.66) using Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server disks?  I kept getting an error for backwards compatibility.   Is this possible or do I need to purchase another copy of Snow Leopard Server?

I want to install Snow Leopard Server on our MacPro(2.66) using Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server disks?  I kept getting an error for backwards compatibility.   Is this possible or do I need topurchase another copy of Snow Leopard Server?

The OS disks that are shipped with a particular product
are set up so that tey will only install on that product.
It will install on any Mini of that exact vintage, but that
    is all.
This is to prevent people from doing exactly what you
are trying to do.  The license for OSX shipped with any
is only valid for that product.  Also, Snow Leopard,
including Server, is only permitted to be run on one
computer at a time.  Bottom line, unlike Lion, legally
you cannot install the same copy on multiple
computers unless some "family pack" or site license
    is purchased.
Yes, you need to purchase another copy.
The copy of Snow Leopard license is here:

  • Configure DNS on Snow Leopard Server for Web Hosting

    Hi Everyone,
I put together an article on my blog about Snow Leopard DNS setup for web hosting. http://www.mkahn.com/?p=279
I'll be revising it over the next few weeks to make it more informative based around feedback. Let me know if you have any questions or trouble setting up DNS on Snow Leopard Server for web hosting.

Thanks for your replies. I realize I'm not making clear the way this network is configured . Also, the only services running on the Snow Leopard server are (at this time):
    dhcpd - in the 10.136.31.x range;
    dns - same as before;
    planned to add are:
    Open Directory (for network logins)
    Software update;
    Web (only on the 10.136.31.x Ethernet);
    mySQL (localhost only - for moodle);
NAT is not set up on the Snow Leopard server itself. We have an outside router, a Cisco 2811. This router provides routing for both the public IP range, and the NAT range is configured in this router. The forwarding dns is located in LR and Fayetteville. So what I need is dns on Snow Leopard to forward outside queries to the state DNS servers, and resolve the local NAT IP only for Open Directory and a set of Snow Leopard clients.
Is this going to be possible?

  • MySql Database set up on Snow Leopard Server for Wordpress

I am trying to set up a mySql database on the snow leopard server in order to install wordpress.
I have played around with the MySql database settings (in the server admin window) but can't seem to figure out how to set the database name, username, and password within the Snow leopard server.
Do I need to use third party software like Navicat to create the database and user names etc? If yes, any idea how to do that? If now, how do I create a MySql database, username and pw?
I have put the Wordpress install folder on my Snow leopard server. When I navigate to my domain it says I need to configure wordpress by providing my database name, username and password.
Thanks in advance.. I am struggling here.

That's set up via the [MySQL command line|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/376]. Or you can install the (free) Sequel Pro GUI package, given you're probably more comfortable in the GUI. The steps required for Mac OS X Server are the same as most any other platform, so [launch the MySQL client per the Wordpress Codex|http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress], and follow the instructions.

  • TIP: Use VNC for Headless Leopard Server Installs

Wish I had figured this one out before...
Quick little tidbit for all those installing Leopard Server on a machine that doesn't have a display. You can use server admin tools and 'Server Assistant' running on a different box. Or, once the installer has started on the Leo Server box, you can VNC into it directly! Then its just like installing it with a display connected.
This was useful for me to be able to run disk utility on an old XServe that didn't have a display card.
Once you've figured out what IP the box has (take a look in the Server Assistant for this info) VNC into this using your favourite client (or Leopard Client's Screen Sharing app):
The username is blank (i.e. no username), and the password is the first eight characters of the machine's serial number.
Very useful little addition there by Apple.

So does anyone here run their Mac Mini headless for both iTunes serving (to include iTunes TV and movies) and i-device syncing?
    i do
    Is it practical?
    pretty much.
Would I use Snow Leopard Screen Sharing to control it?
i use a combination of screen sharing and iTeleport on my iPad.
what i found to be necessary is to enable +automatic login+ for the user account on which iTunes is running via system preferences > security for when you do software updates and the mini needs rebooting.

  • Leopard and CS3 - Are they ready for prime time?

Trying to revive this thread, I manage 130 Macs at an art school and I am starting to research what I am going to do this summer as far as OS and CS versions. Currently we are on 10.4.9 and CS2 and about 15% of our Macs are Intels. I am concerned as I am not hearing good things about Leopard and I am wondering if CS3 is ready for prime time. I should note that stability is my first priority NOT the latest OS and App versions. So the question is are they ready for prime time or should I stay with CS2 and Tiger or should I go CS3 and Tiger.

Summer is a long way off, so hard to guess. I would say that if they don't have the kinks out by then, they probably never will, but still a gamble at this point IMO. I have one of the new Mac Pros (early 2008) w/CS3 Apps installed. I have been using all the below listed apps for the past two weeks without any major problems so far, but I also know that I may be living on the edge right now. I don't feel confident enough to switch to Leopard on my other two computers yet. My restarts on the new machine take about 30-seconds between selecting Restart and ready to start work again (vs about 1.5-2 minutes on my Dual G5). Apps like Photoshop CS3 launch in about 1/3 the time. But all of this speed means absolutely nothing when you slam into an incompatibility - that is the real time trap - I spent the last 8 hours doing nothing but tracking down a Permissions problem in Leopard that none of the utilities will currently fix.
These appear to be working for me so far...
    Photoshop CS3
    Illustrator CS3
    InDesign CS3
    Flash CS3
    Dreamweaver CS3
    Bridge CS3
    Lightroom
    After Effects CS3
    Contribute CS3
    What doesn't work yet...
Acrobat Pro & Acrobat Reader (fix was expected from Adobe last month)
    Other issues encountered so far...
Most Photoshop and After Effects Plugins required paid upgrades to function in Leopard/CS3 (over $1500 for me the past week)
Monitor calibrator software (such as Artisan) dead with no fixes, but to buy all new hardware calibrators/software - again! - another $1000 bucks
I purchased the Silverfast Leopard upgrade ($105) to get the Epson 4870 scanner plugin to work with Photoshop CS3, but having problems - I think it is a Leopard problem
Adobe UPDATES menu item is dimmed out in all CS3 apps.
Having lots of Leopard User Permissions problems - hopefully 10.5.2 will help?
