I have a 3 year old MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion (recently upgraded) OS X 10.8.5, and am thinking about purchasing Lightroom 5 for photo organization and editing. Will the Lightroom 5 operate smoothly on this system?

I am trying to use iCloud drive to store my Lightroom catalog. I want to access it from my iMac and my Macbook Pro, using smart previews. I have read about people doing this with dropbox, but iCloud drive is cheaper for 200gb a month. I exported a new catalog of my images to the iCloud drive folder on one computer. When I open the iCloud drive on the other computer the files are there with the download symbol next to them. Does this mean I have to download to my computer to use with Lightroom? And if so, what do I need to do to sync my changes?

For the record do not try and use iCloud drive with lightroom. Every time you tweak a file you need to repload entire catalog.

No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.

With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive?

You most certainly can send photos from Lightroom 5 to CS6 and do any editing that is possible in either program

LR 5.6 was released back in July while Yosemite was released somewhat after. Some people are having some issues and some are not. I suspect many are related to permissions getting reset on folders during the upgrade process and people having pictures and catalogs stored under their user library or not.

Lightroom 3 compatible with Mac OS X 10.8?

Hi, I changed from Windows to Mac OS X 10.8. Will Lightroom 3 work on it? On the packaging is written, that it's only compatible with 10.5 or 10.6 - probably because when it came out 10.8 didn't exist so far. So, may it be possible?
Another question: if it worked, I would have to change my student version of Lightroom 3 from one computer to another. But Adobe gave the admission only for one computer. So I suppose, I have to deinstall the one on Windows and reinstall it on Mac. But how does Adobe check this and how can I be sure, that it will work on my Mac?

Auf der Verpackung steht, dass es mit 10.5 oder 10.6 kompatibel ist - wahrscheinlich weil 10.8 zu dem Zeitpunkt noch nicht draußen war. Kann es also sein, dass es funktioniert?
Andere Frage: falls es funktioniert, müsste ich die "Student version" von einem auf den anderen Rechner spielen. Aber im Package war nur eine Lizenz, also vermute ich, dass ich das Programm auf einem Rechner deinstallieren muss, um es auf dem anderen zu installieren. Aber wie checkt Adobe das und wie kann ich sicher sein, dass es auf meinem Mac funktioniert?

Lightroom 3.6 runs fine on Mac OS X 10.8.
As to your other question, check the student license agreement for details. In general, you can move LR from Windows to Mac and stay within the terms of the license agreement but there may be restrictions I'm unaware of in the student license.

The official line is yes. However, some users have experienced some problems. Whether these are due to incompatibility or problems resulting from the upgrade process is not yet clear.
The only acknowledge issue relates to Edit in Photoshop command not transferring images for Photomerge or as Smart Objects.
Note: Except for above, I'm running Lr 2.4 on a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard without issue.

An Adobe agent has just told me that LR4 is NOT compatible with Yosemite!
The same agent felt it would be a good idea for me to pay Adobe $400 to upgrade to CS6 and then I could use LR4 and PS!!!!!!!!

Surely the Adobe forums are the place for help with Adobe applications. The fact that the problem doesn't occur on your daughter's machine suggests that it's not an issue with Mavericks but a local problem on your own machine.
