Is Lightroom really a professional tool?

I try for a second time to convince a professional photographer, which uses the DAm features of Lightroom heavily, to upgrade from Lightroom 2.7 to Lightroom 3.
A year ago it was the editing of hierarchical keyword, which prevented her upgrading, because this feature did not work.
Now, it is the issue that in keywprd hierarchies some features known from Lightroom 2 are not present or do not work:
1) In LR 3.5 the count of keyword is not applied hierarchical anymore. In LR 3, if I had a hierarchy like this.
Animals
  Dogs
  Cats
the following was calcualated:
Animals 12
  dogs 4
  cats 8
In,Lightroom 3 the total amounts of animals (12) is not calculated:
Animals
   dogs 4
   cats 8
Additionally, clicking on the arrow to the right of animals, in LR2 the images were filtered to all images having keywords which includes all animals and its childs.
Is is a bug, or was this new behaviour applied on purpose?
Now, the workflow of her does not work anymore, probably causing her not to upgrade.
Additionallly, and this should be a bug, if clickling on the arrow at the right of Animals, the images aren't filtered accordingly.
I have no sympathy, that such serious bug in the DAM sections slip through and are still prevalent in the product, or if the new behaviour is intentional, that this is implemented without the option that old behaviour can be recovered.
All in all, I think these are real bugs, which haven't been addressed. This all shows that Lightroom is hardly a professional tool.
May I remember that the keyword editing features aren't resolved completely, still? Keyword completion for keywords with spaces still does not work with parent keywords. And this after how many months / years after the first final release?
This all is absolutely disappointing.
Regards
Thomas

I never used LR 2 and if the tag count behaviour has changed then I sympathise.
In your example I think it is because the photos have not been tagged with “Animals” and only the child tags of dogs and cats have been applied.   The counting as it currently implemented works nicely for me – why … because it means I can adopt a lazy “do later” hierarchical decomposition tagging of my shots.
For example if I have some photographs of mushrooms I will tag them as mushroom but not actually assign a child tag for the type of mushroom until I have got the book out properly identified it.    Although I have hundreds of mushroom shots tagged with child tags of mushroom, I am quite happy to have a count of say 2 against the “mushroom” tag as this is telling me at some point I need to properly identify the mushroom,  assign a child tag of mushroom and remove the “mushroom” tag.
For me when I click on the right arrow next to a parent keyword then I do see all parent and child tagged photos as well – I do not know why you are not getting the same as me.
As an aside, to support the way I do things I wish I could have an optional setting called “Should not use” for parent keywords and allow filtering or smart collection showing photos which use any such tags.   This would allow me to see at a glance all photos which require some additional child tagging i.e. anything simply tagged “Mushroom”, “Owl”, “Flower”  or “Animal” is not good enough.
In Lightroom 2, the count for parent keywords was calculated as the sum of the counts of assignments of the parent keyword plus the counts of assigments of all child keywords (drilled down to the last tree leaf).
Now the count method is as you describe.
There are certainly reasons to prefer the current method, but it is unprofesional to drop the one method and replace it with another, because you don't know if people depend on the former. This is well known good practice.

  • Lightroom 5 Spot Removal Tool Lags and is not usable (Temp Workaround?)

Lightroom 5 Spot Removal Tool Lags and is not usable.  The Spot Removal Tool really is pretty essential to the usability and workflow of Lightroom 5.  Checking the other tools alongside the Spot Removal Tool, it appears that the Red Eye Correction Tool is also affected.  Might it have something to do with the Process Version?  I noticed when working with some older image files (using the 2010 Process Version), the Spot Removal Tool worked as previously experienced. Current images that have been "upgraded" to the New Process Version (2012) are now incapable of utilizing the Spot Removal Tool due to its very laggy and sporadic response.  I've never experienced an issue like this with Lightroom (LR user since LR2).  Mac OSX 10.7.5, 3.4GHz i7, 8GB 1333MHz DDR3
I've also noticed that reprocessing an image can revert the Spot Removal Tool to "useful" again (reverting from 2012 to 2010, then back to 2012).  Doesn't always work and doesn't always "stick", as closing and reopenling LR usually reinitiates the laggy Spot Removal Tool.
I haven't seen anyone mention the Process Version as a potential culprit, nor have I seen any reliable workarounds.  Reprocessing an image (or set of images) at least works for me for a while, though it would sure be nice to not have continue reprocessing images every time I open/use Lightroom 5.
LR5 is great and is all I need for the majority of my images.  Unfortunately for me, though, that usability also necessitates the Spot Removal Tool's unhindered functionality.

For some reason, it's clear that not everyone is experiencing such a massive slowdown / bottleneck when it comes to the Spot Removal Tool.  If all users experienced this issue to this degree, they would have been clamoring for Adobe to address and rectify it immediately.
With all due respect, Sean, to make a suggestion like that proves you do not experience / have not experienced this issue / don't understand the severity to which this issue can affect workflow; simply "turning off noise reduction and lens correction" is definitely not a fix.  If 16GB of RAM doesn't fix the issue, do you really think simply turning off noise reduction will?  And as Bert Nase points out, to do that to large volumes of images increases workflow in a program designed to streamline workflow for large volumes of images.
1- One option is to change the process version in your first photo (2003/2010), then copy-paste that develop setting to the rest of your images.  This will get all of your images to the point in your workflow where you can use the Spot Removal Tool on each image.  Once spot removal is done, reconvert each image back to the current process version (2012) then re-accomplish the spots that reconverting lost.
2- Configuring presets is one work-around option, though you will need at least couple of them tailored to your workflow.
3- Changing your import settings to an earlier Process Version is an option, then accomplishing Spot Removal on each photo, then updating the Process Version on one and copy/paste to the rest, then re-accomplishing for each photo the spots lost in the conversion and continuing your workflow from there.
Readers of this thread can use the link above, but it can introduce its own issues, too.  As noted, switching back-and-forth between Process Versions can delete some of your already-corrected spots and you'll have to re-correct them.  Worse, a window prompt asking to create a virtual copy or proof will occasionally begin popping up.. closing the window, clicking "cancel", or choosing any other option in that pop-up window won't be "remembered" and the window pops back up with any further "click" on the image.  Lightroom has to be shut down and the computer restarted for the issue to reset.
Yes, it's very frustrating and time consuming to say the least.  So, unfortunately there is no fix, still only work-arounds.  Hopefully this issue will be addressed and remedied in either the coming release of 5.2 (doubtful) or the Cloud version of Photoshop + Lightroom.

  • Lightroom libary and development tool shows different colors

My problem is, that photos are shown different in color between libary and development tool in Lightroom 3.6. The libary shows corrected color in photos, the development tool not.
When I switch between libary and development tool sometimes, the development tool shows then the same colors.

Is your monitor profiled and calibrated, with a hardware tool (e.g. Spyder, Colourmunki etc)?
If there's no profile, or it's faulty, there can be problems.  In Develop module LR uses ProPhoto RGB colour space, but in Library module it uses Adobe RGB.  They'll look different if colour management isn't working, which requires a monitor profile that contains colour space information.

  • Lightroom 4 Graduated Filter tool

How do you change from compact mode to expanded mode in Graduated filter tool in Lightroom 4?

What do you mean by Compact mode?
    - When you select the graduated filter, the menu expands. When you deselect the Graduated filter the menu rolls up.

  • Lightroom 4 color sampling tool?

It would be nice to have a colour sampler in Lightroom 4 to be able to monitor the use of the new RGB channels in the curve. Is there such an item, or is it possible to have something like that in the toolbox? Something like the Camera raw where you can select mulitple points - or use a modify key to change the eye dropper(Lightroom) into a colour sampler point?

The place you should be posting to is the Lightroom 4 Beta Forum...

  • Is Lightroom really better for noise reduction than Adobe Camera Raw?

That's what I keep hearing from Lightroom users (who don't use Photoshop or barely touch it).
Which is better? or are they exactly the same? I'm not referring to a specific version, but I am personally using the latest Cloud versions of everything. I haven't tested it visually, I'm just now getting familiar with Lightroom.

Given the same version number, Lightroom and Camera Raw have the exact same sharpening and noise reduction. The only differences in ACR and LR are usability or UI aspects, the controls and rendering are the same.

  • Lightroom 5.5 Cropping tool so SLOW update to fix?

I recently upgraded to LR 5.5 with help from Adobe support with the technician taking over my screen, soI'm confident it's all been upgraded and installed correctly.
But when cropping rotating an image it takes 3 secs to catch up what I have done. Over a 1000 photo wedding to edit this can be a serious waste of time.
My computer is very good. iMac 2013 with 32Gb RAM.
Anyone else having thos and more importantly found a fix for it?
Are ADOBE aware of this bug and are they bringing out an update?
    Thanks

    Hi,
    <Before optimising catalog>
I've tried using the upright tool and it's as snappy as ever. I've also tried manual perspective transformations, and they seem to be just as fast as they were before the upgrade to LR5.5.
I've also tried a handful of other operations (Vignetting, Post Crop Vignetting, Tone Curve Adjustment, Radial Filter), and they all respond at a decent pace. So currently, yes it's just cropping/rotating that are moving slowly.
    <After optimising catalog>
I can't be sure whether I'm imagining it or not, but crop/rotate do seem to be a little smoother/faster. I was getting the "rainbow wheel" previously, and I'm not getting that now - there's just a brief pause while the image appears to re-render, and then we're underway again.
Again I might be imagining it, but it seems as though the drag/delay is greater when I'm cropping down significantly - slight downsizing of images doesn't seem to result in as much of a delay as massive downsizing by cropping.
I'll carry on like this and see whether there's a sustained improvement.
    Many thanks for your help,
    Vineet

  • HELP - lightroom 4, my cropping tool is not working as it use too.

I use to be able to grab a corner of the crop tool, usually the bottom right corner, then manipulate moving it to desired size. Now, when I grab this corner, I can only push in one direction. If I push too much, then the horizontal becomes a vertical, bouncing between the two. I have checked to see if I may have changed something in the settings, but see nothing to change. Anyone have ideas, would greatly appreciate some help, thanks. Steve

I'm not quite understanding the issue. But I'm wondering if this is a problem caused by having the aspect ratio locked. If you click on the little padlock that's visible in the crop tool controls, does that make a difference for you?

  • Is there really no pen tool?

It was quite helpful for quickly adding keyframes in FCE4 and I find it hard to believe that it isn't therre in FCPX.  Does anyone know how to access it?

    Click to add a keyframe.

  • Where's the Networking?

We are up to ver. 2.4 and Adobe STILL has no central network support to allow multiple users to access and share the same library / catalogs.  To me, this is unconscionable in this day and age when network-based access to central file repositories are not only required – it’s all there is out here for a lot us (like me) – those very ones whom Adobe seems to be targeting this product to. Or, am I mistaken?  Is Lightroom really a "Professional Grade" product without networking support?  I don’t think that it is – becuase this is  such a core-issue, so critical to today’s massive work-flows of digital assets.
Adobe, please note that 100% of my data resides on central file servers where all my data is backed-up, managed, cared-for, and loved (and it should be) in a central file-server environment where it rightfully belongs.  And yet, this “Professional Grade” product is still unable to “watch” my main data folders on the Server(s) for daily updates of my stuff – so I am therefore forced to revert to 3rd-party “work-arounds” such as Microsoft’s SyncToy 2.0 – (which, btw, is really quite nice and I highly recommend it!) – But really Adobe, what kind of Mickey-mouse work-flow is this?  Relying on Micrsoft to fill a need that never should have occurred.
Adobe, PLEASE – enough already – this issue has been beaten over your heads for years!  You guys dropped the ball on this one.  Clearly.  No more excuses.  No more claiming that this was an intentional “feature” from the very beginning.  Sorry, I’ve read and heard all of the arguments and there are simply no justifications whatsoever for withholding central networking support in this product – not anymore.
Any word on when we can expect this “networking feature”?  Perhaps by 2.5?  Later?
    Thank you.

    Hi Freddi,
So, I think this is you solution :
when you work on you laptop, just before, using the network, execute this sequence
    open a Terminal
execute the command line "rsync -anvz --delete MACPRO_IP:/Users/freddif/Pictures .", it'll ask your password of the desktop [OPTIONAL THIS IS JUST TO SEE THE CHANGE IT MAY EXECUTE]
execute the command line "rsync -avz --delete MACPRO_IP:/Users/freddif/Pictures .", it'll ask your password of the desktop and make the synchronization
you can work on it, and then, when back home, before starting lightroom, execute this sequence

I actually do this between a quad g5 and a macbook air ;-)
Maybe, a simple Apple script can do the same, so, you just start it from the applcescript menubar ;-P

  • RED ONE digital camera...

Has anyone used a RED digital camera with FCP?
    RED Camera specs: http://www.red.com/cameras/tech_specs/
If so, how does FCP handle those resolutions (4900 x 2580) and frame rates (120 fps)? I watched a recent BluRay (Red Dwarf - Back to Earth) and was VERY impressed with the quality -- apparent RED camera's were used to shoot the footage. These cameras cost a fraction of the $250,000 Movie studio cameras at somewhere around $20,000-$25,000 US.
Would love to hear from anyone who's had experience with this camera and even more so someone who's worked on post production footage.
    Thanks, Rob.

Yes the RedOne is a fantastic camera, but as Shane pointed out, it is really a professional tool meant to replace 35mm - not HD video. That isn't to say it can't be done - and it will certainly make some super nice HD video, but the cost of entry is still pretty high, even if it is much less than a comparable film camera (and all the processing/scanning involved there).
More important than the 4k numbers though is the fact that it shoots what is effectively RAW video - allowing for a lot of post processing/grading/vfx. Check out District 9 - while not all of it was shot on Red (the docu stuff was done on an HD Sony camera I believe - a much less $$ one than Red) a lot of the FX sequences were.
Keep a lookout for the Red Scarlet which should be available soon. That will offer 3k in a much smaller and more "prosumer" friendly package, without sacrificing the RAW capabilities. They are going to be making special "mini-prime" lenses for it too - should be a great replacement for DSLRs shooting H264.

  • Lightroom image management - ready for professionals?

    Hi
I have a client, which is doing professional gardening photography for various magazines in this topic. Her business ranges from magazine reports about individual gardens to delivering single images to different publishers as requested (for example by flower type, color etc.). The main thing is that her image portfolio isn't organized so much in individual shoots or contracts. An image can be sent to many publishers at any time. She needs to kepp track of this. She needs to know, which image has been published when and where.
Before moving to digital recently, she kept track of here jobs with cumulus, which had more database capabilities, but much less possibilities in image adjustment. Shooting only raw with a Canon 1 series camera, she choosed Lightroom as here image editing and managing tool. Beeing pleased with the friendliness of the user interface and many of its image editing and managing capabilities, she (actually we) are astonished, that even in a version 2 it is still not really possible to keep track of what happens to the images in a professional environment (despite the claim of Adobe that the product is made for professionals).
In essence the program isn't really capable of managing image data, which has a one to many relationship to the image (i.e. the instances of cases an image is sent to a customer). We experimented with virtual copies, which can carry individual metadata, collections (which cannot carry metadata) or storing the required data in the large description field. None of these possibilites were really satisfying. The most promising solution in using virtual copies, ended up in a maintenance nightmare, because it was too easy to forget, where to do which data management (at the master raw file or at the virtual copy).
Then, I learned that with Lightroom 2 there is a possibility to extend metadata, but, unfortunately with the usual limitation of not supporting one to many data (in the SDK-documentation called "spreadsheet type data"). The rest of the SDK documentation did not reveal any other helpful way of solving the problem as the SDK deals mainly with export plugin programming or web stuff, which is of no use to the client. It is rather disappointing that Lightroom's extensibility is still so limited. Where is the programming interface, that allows the development of complete new modules?
Given the slow pace, Lightroom development takes (I can expect that "breakthrough" extensions to the SDK will take even longer), I guess that my client can wait for another 3 or 5 years until anything close to true image management will come up.
So we have to look for some intermediate solutions. Whereas other software (expression media, idimager, cumulus) may have better database capabilities, they lack in raw editing completely and are often more awkward to use. Therefore, I would like to ask the community here, how they handle the tasks described above with Lightroom or with other tools? Perhaps we have overlooked a Lightroom capability?
One thing I thought of is to develop a special keyword hierarchy for contracts, but this also would not allow, all the images tracking needed.
Any ideas? I guess there aren't any plugins, which can deal with one to many data.
    Kind regards
    Thomas

Actually, we haven't ruled out keywords yet, in fact, at the moment it seems to be the only realistic possibility. However, I wonder if a growing keyword hierarchy can become unwieldy at the end, so I am sceptical, if this idea would deliver.
In general, I think that Lightroom should more move into the direction of beeing a platform for other vendors. The limitation to web stuff and export solutions isn't enough. I hope to see third party vendor modules, eventually one which provides more professional image management and tracking capabilites, exploring the fact that Lightroom has a database underneath it.
I would like to see a DxO raw conversion module or a lens correction module, fields where I think Lightroom and ACR are still not the best in its class (I think LightZone and DxO are the better raw processing engines).
Unfortunately, I do not see Lightroom going much into this direction. Probably this is already too late for the version 3 release, due in 2010 (?), so we need to wait until v4 (in 2012 ?) until the situation improves?
I believe many customers (especially professionals with precious time) need a fully integrated system, which can do image management and image adjustment at the same time. Lightroom is the right platform for it, if Adobe let it be.
    Kind regards
    Thomas
