Is Logic 9 better on Snow Leopard?

I'm running Logic 9 on Leopard and I'm finding it REALLY buggy.
Would upgrading to Snow Leopard help (and not all my plug-ins are 64 bit, so before anyone says I'll still have to run in 32...)
???

Actually that is what we did. I have a MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP31.0070.B07
SMC Version (system): 1.16f11
Serial Number (system): W8743016YAM
Hardware UUID: 00000000-0000-1000-8000-001B63932B2A
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled
and with 10.5.8 and a Presonus Firestudio Lightpipe with a GRaid mini drive it records 32 tracks just fine. So far the longest I have had it recording for is about 2 hours.
But the new MBP that I upgraded to 10.6.6 connected to the same hardware just goes for about 4 minutes and then says "disk too slow". Same thing with the Mini running 10.6.
Sadly now that Logic is part of the Apple Mothership they are certainly less likely to report compatibility problems with their own companies OS.
Pro Tools has their own update site that they have Approved and tested versions of OS updates that work with Pro Tools.
Here is the Link. http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=352429&NewLang=en
I don't think Logic will have a site like this anytime soon.

  • Logic 8 stability on Snow Leopard versus Leopard

I've been running Logic 8 for a couple of years with Leopard and it crashes but not regularly enough to be a pain in the butt too much. However after trying it with Snow Leopard I've been getting multiple crashes (i.e. 3 or 4 in a one hour period).
Is this a common occurence, is Logic 9 any better stability wise?
    Thanks

I've been with Logic since v7. I ran Logic 8 untill Logic 9 came out. The combination of Logic 9.1 and Snow Leopard has blown me away. When L9 and SL were both new (in about august & sept 09) there were crashes but with the latest versions of both I don't really have crashes anymore at all. It's been the best DAW performance I've ever seen. Very impressive. I recommend updating to L9 and to verify you have the latest version of OSX.
More or less the same here. I've been with Logic a little longer (the first version from when it stopped being Notator), so I'm not sure I can say it's the most stable I've ever seen mostly cos it's hard to remember that far back... But it is for sure up there with the most stable setups I remember in a while, like Logic Platinum 4.7 (on os9) or possibly a bit better. I've done some fairly intense work on it so far (including working to video) and have only as yet had a couple of weird things happen but no crashes. Only crash yet was opening an older project that was started in Logic 8 which had video in it, but that was easy to sort out. Overall, very much in agreement that the latest updates of everything system-wise and Logic-wise are working out pretty well.
One note - I haven't gotten all that much into flex time yet but I did a sense that there was a bit of flakiness in there somewhere when I gave it a bit of a workout re-quantizing an entire sequence of tap dancing to a fixed tempo (don't ask). So perhaps there's some lacking stability to be found in areas I haven't used much yet. But then, takes folders were downright bug-ridden in Logic 8, and are much better now in 9, so it seems like fixes are getting done in a more or less timely manner.

  • Problems in Logic after transitioning from Snow Leopard to Mtn Lion

I have recently transitioned into Mtn Lion from Snow Leopard using Logic 9.1.8.  Now every time I try to open a project created using the EXS24 Bosendorfer piano (Logic) plug in, Logic crashes. I also use (and mix together) Miroslav Philharmonik plug ins and am haviing no trouble loading them (after an initial glitch).  Logic also crashes when I try to load the EXS224 Bosendorfer piano (Logic) plug-in into a project.  Suggestions for a fix?   What am I issing?  Thanks for any help here.

    Hello alkhater.
I did confirm that I am not using iCloud, so was able to cross that off the checklist.  I was able to resolve the issue by going into the Library folder and removing every file I could find that had "Address Book" in its name.  Then I rebooted the computer and started Contacts, which opened with the default Apple card and "User" card.  From there I was able to rebuild my Contacts, and it is now working normally.
Thanks for the feedback and enjoy your day.

  • Can't open or start new projects in Logic after updating to Snow Leopard

I've been having a few problems with Logic 9 since updating to Snow Leopard (10.6.8 )  a couple of days ago.
Every time i click on "new" and try and start a new project - logic freezes and i get the rotating circle sign and Logic stops responding - eventually i need to force quit and start again.
Existing projects seem to be functioning fine, although slightly slower than before.
Does anyone have any fixes for this?! Not being able to start a new project is quite a big problem!
    Thanks

The mistake was trusting only TimeMachine as your backup/restore.
If you had your users files also backed up to a external storage drive, or used a bootable clone (since they can be directly accessed) then you could have recovered just your files.
This is what I suggest you do since TM apprantly botched things.
1: Visit my user tip here and attempt to fix Snow Leopard in place, the purpose here is to get a booing machine so you can use a working Admin account to copy the user folder containing your files to a regular external drive.
I suggest #8 and #6, this will reinstall OS X over itself to fix it, then reset the User Password so you can hopefully log in.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
2: This method will also work, you install Snow Leopard onto a extenral drive and boot from it. This is probally a more safer choice than above, it's certainly less work, but it needs a blank external powered drive.
.Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
3: Once a copy of your users files is off, then your free to revert your machine back to Snow Leopard.
The ENTIRE drive must be selected and erased, to set the GUID, erase the RecoveryHD and EFI partitions.

opened from the tool bar and also directly from applications. Any more suggestions?
Can you start a new project, or are you saying you cannot launch DVD SP at all? If the later try deleting the preferences (since you are on the road, make sure you copy the preferences to someplace in case something goes wrong.) If it is the former, you may not be ablle to open the existing project if you took all the steps of clicking cancel etc., though the deleting preferences could possibly help if the preferences are corrupted and causing an issue when you are trying to skip files. (Would not count on that one though.)

  • Logic 8 and possible Snow Leopard Issue

Ok folks, this is my first post/problem on the apple discussion boards....here it goes. Hopefully someone can tell me what my problem:
Specs: MacBook Pro 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM: Operating on Snow Leopard.
Logic Pro 8.0.2; Lexicon Omega USB as the core audio.
Problem: First of all, I work primarily with MIDI and some vocal audio. Ever since I installed snow leopard on my computer Logic has been giving me a lot of problems. My CPU can't even handle one VST plugin with a couple effects on it now. Sometimes even just playing an instrument, one of the ram sticks will spike and either crash logic or say it's overloaded and cut out the audio. This happens either with a single instrument, or with a sequence I created, it can't play the loop back all the way through without saying "core audio overload". I primarily use Komplete 5 software instruments by Native Instruments, and I know these eat up CPU but it was never like this before I installed Snow Leopard. I tried dumbing down the I/O buffer size, and process buffer range, but none of these seem to make a difference. Why is it only one CPU bar that spikes? I'm not running anything else on the computer at the time. Is 2GB of ram not enough anymore?
One more issue that might help someone troubleshoot this...actually playing the instruments isn't as much of an obstacle as playback. Also, any session that I've made under the old operation system, if I try and open it up and play it, it either overloads IMMEDIATELY or the actual software instruments don't play, and the only way to make them play is to rewire them by taking them off and putting them back on again.
I can usually troubleshoot these things myself but for some reason I'm scared that it's a RAM issue and that I will need to buy a new computer to continue my producing. Because 2 is as high as this macbook goes, right? I hope it's just a USB thing and I need to upgrade my interface or switch to firewire.
Can anyone offer some advice or a solution to this problem?
    Thanks,
    J

    wow, thanks guys.

  • Presonus Faderport problem with Logic Pro 7 running Snow Leopard

I've been been using Tiger to run Logic Pro 7 without any problems for the past few years. I've held out on upgrading to Snow Leopard since everything worked so nicely, but I finally gave in and loaded 10.6.6. Logic Pro 7 seems to be okay except for my Faderport control surface functionality. I upgraded to the newest FP firmware, and Logic 7 recognizes the FP, but it doesn't work. When I open a Logic project I get a pop up dialog box that says:
Module file "Faderport" is too new and cannot be used with this version of Logic control surfaces. Please get an update of the Logic control surface application file. I also get another dialog box that says: "Loading Module Faderport..." But nothing happens.
I'd appreciate any and all ideas on how I might deal with this. Thanks!

    Hi,
I'm getting this message since updating the Faderport Firmware. I'm using Logic 7 in Tiger still.
How did you fix the install pref?

  • Logic 8.0 with Snow Leopard - Addictive Drums plug-in causes Logic to crash

I just bought a new iMAC with Snow Leopard and installed Logic 8.0.
It seems to run OK but one particular plug-in causes Logic to crash.
It's Addictive Drums by XLN Audio.
It runs OK in Logic and ProTools LE8 on my MacBookPro which has Leopard.
XLN Audio are so far mystified.
Another drum plug-in, Superior Drums 2.0 and Altiverb both work fine.
I'm upgrading to Logic 9 this weekend hoping that this will sort it.
It seems that AD has a problem with Snow Leopard.
    Anyone else encountered this problem?

    Yes...version shows as 8.0.2 (1502.22)
Reading some the negative comments on the forum re.Logic 9 I'm beginning to wonder if it's worth upgrading from 8. It doesn't seem likely to be the solution and may cause more problems.
I've heard the new guitar amp features are excellent though which interests me.

  • Logic Express 7.2 & Snow Leopard?

Can anyone tell me whether LE 7.2 will work on my MacBookPro with Snow Leopard?
It's a fair bit cheaper for me to install 7.2 and get the upgrade disc for LE9, compared to buying LE9 full installation.
    Thanks in advance!

I don't think it will hurt to try. Apparently latest versions of Mac OSX are compatible with previous versions of software, as opposed to the previous versions of OS and newer software.

  • 10.7.2 Better than Snow Leopard 10.6.8?

Hi. I downgraded to Snow Leopard but if are you happy with 10.7.2 or should I stick with 10.6.8 Snow for now? Thank you. I'm on a late iMac 2009 i7. Thank you in advance.
    Gbu,
    Alvin

10.7.2 fixes most of Lions bugs and adds back a lot of performance. To me it is now useable for day to day usage. No crashes, no slowing downs. So why not.
I have 4GB and run memory intensive software, it works nice for the most stuff.
just make sure to use Lion-compatible software ( most apps from 3rd parties have received updates ).
Before 10.7.2 performance was horrible and it was unstable.

  • Is logic 7 compatible with snow leopard 10.6.8?

I have been running logic pro 7.0.0 on OSX 10.6.8 for ages with no problem.
Now all of a sudden it has died on me. Immediatley crashes every time I try to open it.
I have tried re-installing and still no joy.
I have also tried to install verion 7.2.0 but this will not install, just get a error.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Do I have to upgrade and if so will version 8 work?
    Many thanks

CS 1 Works totally fine here on 10.6.8 and Rosetta is a killer feature, very fast and unobtrusive, I generally don't notice speed differences between CS1 (PPC) and CS5.5 (Intel) on the same machine for normal size files. So I have no reason to believe this won't be the case with CS2 as well.  With gigantic files 5.5 certainly has the edge as it can use way more memory.
Don't forget to ENABLE rosetta on 10.6. It is no longer ON by default.

  • Advice needed on whether to reinstall Snow Leopard with Logic Studio 8

Prior to purchasing Snow Leopard upgrade, my Imac 3.06GHz 4GB RAM was running Logic studio 8 really nicely. Plugins include Realguitar 2, Abbey Rd drums, KorePlayer and I use the Tascam FireOne controller for audio. After installing Snow Leopard I noticed logic was overloading much easier than previously. This appeared to be that only one core of the CPU was showing activity and once that maxed out the system stopped. I decided after much frustration to wipe the iMac and revert to the original OS. However I dont think the situation has improved much - although I dont get logic hanging when I quit the application, I notice it still tends to run out of steam long before it did before. Now I am wondering whether to risk reinstalling the Snow Leopard upgrade as I would like to get a trackpad and a few other features I miss from SL. I am guessing from what I've read on the forum that many users are happy with Logic 8 studio on Snow Leopard and are not getting the same issues as myself. I've read the articles on load balancing cores etc, but what I dont understand is why I never had to bother with this before .. it all just worked fine!
If I do install the upgrade to SL, is there an easy way to reverse if I am not happy without having to completely reinstall everything? If I backup with time machine, will that enable me to revert back to the OS?
Sorry for such a long posting but advice would greatly be received! I also have a macbook pro which I havent tried installing snow leopard on yet, maybe I could try it out on that first?
    Many thanks
    Simon

Snow Leopard is for Logic 9 and higher. Or vice versa.
    Cheers

  • How to install Snow Leopard/Logic 9 on same drive as Tiger/Logic 7

Well I guess my subject said it all. I wanna keep Tiger & Logic 7 but install Snow Leopard & Logic 9 on the same drive. When installing Snow Leopard will it give me the option to partition the hard drive? Any pros & cons to doing this? Some detailed help would be great. Thanks.

Basically from the *disk utility* you'll have to create a new partition big enough to accommodate the new system. As in the picture, select the disk you want, then shrink the size of the disk within the volume scheme graphic ( in this pic I've halved my system volume ) then hit the plus button to create a new partition and when you have it the way you want hit apply and follow the instructions. ( the highlighted blue area shows the existing data on the disk. )
Then you can install the additional system and Logic 9 on that partition.

  • Is it worth it to update from Snow Leopard to Lion?

I just got my first Macbook (early 2008 edition for maximum savings moneywise), and I found out that I can't sync my iphone 5 and ipad mini on the Leopard OS that is on it. I've already worked out that I have to at least get Snow Leopard to use my devices, but someone also told me that Lion is better than Snow Leopard. Any opinions on if it's worth going to Lion instead of just Snow Leopard? And would it COST MORE? Thanks for any opinions, this is the first time I've used a mac since Computer class in 1993 in Middle School so I'm a little confused with some things...

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Snow Leopard to Yosemite - early thoughts

Actually, I haven't .. yet. I've downloaded Yosemite and installed it on an external HD, copied all my data and applications over, and had a look to see what it's like.
    Appearance & System
a lot of flattened icons, more brightly coloured than I'm used to. But hey, I can get used to anything in time! No big deal. Dock's a bit ugly, but no deal breaker
scrolling is back to front and upside down! Swipe DOWN, the page scrolls UP. Luckily this weird aberrant behaviour can be fixed in System Preferences.
apparently there's now tabs in Finder? I've had this for years in Pathfinder, so it's not a novelty.
new dialogue boxes/windows. Quite nice, rather better than Snow Leopard.
no Software Update? Meh. It's now done via the App Store. Ok, but Apple - WHAT HAVE YOU GOT AGAINST PROGRESS BARS IN THE APP STORE?? I'd like to know how my download is doing, thank you very much.
Spotlight is now on steroids and does a whole lot of amazing things like launch programs, search the web, look up definitions, act like a calculator, and more, all by just pressing Cmd-space. Trouble is, the free Alfred (Alt-space) has been giving me just that for years now.
Dictation IS a genuinely exciting new development. Currently I use Dragon Dictate 2.5, which has excellent documentation. Unfortunately, Apple's Dictation has barely ANY help. like: the most important thing with dictation software - how do you TRAIN IT (in names etc that you will be using a lot)?
    Safari
Safari 8 looks exactly like Safari 5. But I don't have Favicons anymore as Glims has decided to pretend it's installed, but doesn't do anything
    iPhoto
looks exactly like the iPhoto I'm running in 10.6, except it doesn't. (Why?) The only change is that in Yosemite, where FULL SCREEN is a big deal, iPhoto doesn't have a full screen button anymore - you have to select it via the menus. Pointless upgrade, but no big deal apart from that button.
    Mail
I thought this was something I'd love - the big Mail change between 10.6 and 10.7. But I don't, not really. Yes, the middle view of conversation headers is nice enough, but sometimes you want a list, and I couldn't see any way to make it a list. It's not too bad though. Just not exciting.
    iTunes
euww. Horrible, just horrible. I've stayed with iTunes 10 in 10.6 and now I've seen the brave new iTunes 11/12 world, I'm glad I have. There's no CoverFlow, separate playlist windows, and only the most rudimentary sidebar (in Playlist view). You might actually like it, but I hate it.
    Applications
I'm going through launching them one at a time, but most seem to run ok, except - so far - for Audio Hijack Pro (but there's probably an upgrade). I've only got as far as F (for FileMaker), but will run through the remainder as and when.
So those are my early thoughts. Yosemite is not too bad, but do I want to upgrade permanently from Snow Leopard? Not really, based on first impressions, which are a bit meh.

Very helpful as I've also loaded OS on external drive and belatedly seeing what I'm missing (if anything) and what breaks. The convergence of iOS and OSX functionality and UI is welcome but like many of your observations, not compelling. Hoping some of the great iOS apps migrate up to OSX, or more fully integrated hope the less-flattened metro-look on OSX indicates Apple's recognition that the pure MS-style UI doesn't enhance usability but does cheapen product look & feel.
