Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using Dr.Web Light from the App Store. It's free, and since it's from the App Store, it won't destabilize the system. If you prefer one of the better known commercial products, then Thomas recommends using Sophos.(Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.) If you already use Sophos, then be aware of this if you are using Mavericks: OS X Mavericks- Sophos Anti-Virus on-access scanner versions 8.0 - 9.1 may cause unexpected restarts
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
The facts are:
1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there
is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.
3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
protection against malware.
5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.
There is nothing MacKeeper can do for you that you can't do pretty much for free or don't even have to do.

Have anew netgear router and now mac keeps freezing and iphone wont download e mails. Help
Hello TracyOShea,
It sounds like your Mac is becoming unresponsive for no apparent reason. I recommend starting by resetting your computers SMC:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
Then perform a Safe Boot, and then restart the computer again and retest the issue:
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
To start up into Safe Mode (to Safe Boot), follow these steps.
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key.
The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
After the logo appears, you should see a progress bar during startup. This indicates that your computer is performing a directory check as part of Safe Mode.
To leave Safe Mode, restart your computer without holding any keys during startup.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
All the very best,

My I Mac keeps freezing, and shutting down apps.
Hello,
I have an I Mac, it keeps freezing, and when I open my applications it will shut them completley. (i.e Chrome keeps shutting down by itself, Skype dissapeared and Gimp is just a question (?) mark now )
I tried restarting the computer on safe mode, and I tried restarting it a couple times, after leaving it off for a couple of minutes. My computer has never been this slow and temperamental since I got it in 07. PLEASE HELP.
Is there a way to clean up my disk, or check erros, or just figure out what is causing my computer to act so slow?
I will gladly appreciate any suggestions from the pros!PLEASE HELP ......

Mac keeps remembering (and connecting) to a forgotten Wifi Network
My macs keep connecting to my slower speed (80211g) network. I only want it to connect to my 80211n network. I have removed the 80211g network from open network connections > advanced and selected the network then pressed the minus button. I have also searched my keychain to remove any references to it. However it is still remembered by the computer and sometimes connects to this slow network. It is quite frsutrating. Any suggestions?
I'd report this as a bug.
Isn't there some builtin backup to the icloud for ipad settings? Perhaps this is interfering.
Some printers support ad hoc network. This means the printers create their own network.

"The xPrintServer-Network Edition is a 'plug-and-print' hardware print server for printing from Apple iOS devices running iOS version 4.2 or higher. The device is roughly the size of an iPhone and uses the iOS native print menu. It requires no additional applications, software downloads, or printer driver installations and automatically discovers available networked printers supporting JetDirect / AppSocket, LPD and IPP protocols."

Can anyone tell me why this keeps happening and how I can stop my mac from suddenly freezing? It's a 15 inch retina display.
Try a reset:
1. Hold the Sleep and Home button down (together) for about 10 seconds
2. Until you see the Apple logo (very important) -
My iPhone 5 will not let me delete emails. I trash them and they look like they are deleted and then they will load back in. I cannot open my Keep Safe app after the last update. It said I needed more storage so I upgraded and it still will not load. It opens for a second and then goes to home page. FB is hit or miss if it will open and when it does it is really slow. Any suggestions?
Oh my gosh I had the EXACT same problem, and for ages I couldn't figure out how to fix it until today. Here's what I did:
First I went onto my computer, opened itunes, and un-installed tumblr, vine and kik. These were the apps I was having problems with (it said I had them on my phone but, like you, they didn't show).
Then I went to the itunes store, searched for each one, and it said I could update them so I did (just FYI: for tumblr a window popped up saying "please click ok to confirm you are 17 years or older", so I did that also)
When I went back to my phone and tried installing them again (still on my computer), it worked!
I hope this helps, because it was incredibly frustrating. Good luck! -
My Ipod keeps restarting and showing the Apple Logo over and over....
PLEASE HELP ME!!!! My Ipod keeps restarting, or turning off, I'm not sure which, but when it does that then it shows the Apple Logo, it will go to the main screen for maybe 1 second, but then it does this cycle over again. It has been doing this for a while now. It is also unresponsive, I and tried the R things but they didn't work either. I have tried plugging it up and it hasnt helped, I have no idea what to do. Oh and I havn't dropped it or anything, I have taken very good care of it. The only thing I can think of that ould be wrong with it is that my Dad had it plugged into his car radio, he says it started doing this action while it was plugged up to that, but I have no proof of that. He also plugged it into his computer, which has none of the Itunes software on it, to try to download my songs onto his computer, he says all the songs copied to his computer just fine. I plugged the Ipod into my Ihome and it froze up, when it unfroze I saw that I had all of my songs, but then it started to Turn off and show the Apple Logo. If you have any suggestions please contact me!!!!

nach 3 Wochen funktioniert es wieder-I fixed it, after 3 weeks
leider kann ich nicht sagen, an was es liegt/
sorry, but I am not able to tell you what the problem was
Da es jetzt geht, ohne dass ich an Vista etwas geändert hätte, vermute ich, dass eines der Apple Programme des Fehler verursacht.
I did not change anything with Vista but it works now. Though I think the failure occured because of one of the Apple products.
Schritt für Schritt / step by step
1. iPod auswerfen / diconnect your iPod
2. holen Sie sich alle wichtigen Windowsupdates/
update your windows
3. holen Sie sich iTunes noch einmal aber installieren Sie es nicht/
download iTunes again, but don't install it.
deinstall all Apple-software
(I use only the software wich comes together with iTunes. I don't use safari. You might deinstall it as well, if you use it on a PC)
Connect your iPod.
Without iTunes the struggle between windows and iTunes was over.
As long as iTunes was installed and a iPod was connected I got a notice of a failure from iTunes and windows. both of them disconnected the iPod. Now windows kept the iPod an I was able to format it, then I disconnected it.
I drove down the computer and turned it on again after a few hours. (Is it necessary to wait a few hours? I don't know. I mention it only)
7. Installieren Sie iTunes / install iTunes
8. starten Sie iTunes / start iTunes
9. verbinden Sie den iPod mit dem Computer / connect your iPod with your PC
Bei mir haben die Fehlermeldungen aufgehört und ich konnte das "kaputte" Gerät wieder mit Musik, Filmen und Hörbüchern füttern.
Ich hoffe es klappt auch bei Ihnen.
In my case there were no further messages of a failure. I got music, movies and audiobooks on my daughters iPod.
Interessieren würde mich schon, warum ein System plötzlich spinnt, obwohl ich "außer" updates nichts verändert hatte.
Why happened it??? -
Mac keeps freezing and crashing
Hi,
I'm on a late 2009 iMac (3.06 Intel Core 2 Duo, 12 GB 1067 DDR3, 1TB HD) with Yosemite. I installed Yosemite a few days ago. Previously I ran Mountain Lion.
While on Mountain Lion the mac suddenly started freezing and crashing. I could still move the cursor, and most of the time my sound kept working (although the screen had frozen I could keep on calling via Skype - music and videos mostly stopped working after a minute or so), but I had to force turn off the mac. Upon rebooting most of the time I couldn't get past the start-up screen with the grey progress bar and Apple logo. The problem persists with Yosemite. There isn't any specific program which seems to cause it - I've had crashes running many different things. It doesn't seem to be a kernel panic: I've had only one instance where the grey letters would show up. Otherwise it just crashes.
I've tried many things to fix it already:
- running DiskWarrior and removing corrupted files
- removing dubious third party extensions
- removing unnecessary login items/Launch Daemons/Launch Agents (after running EtreCheck)
- I ran AHT twice (nothing came up) and Rember once (idem)
- ran recovery mode to verify the disk (nothing came up)
- ran Safe Boot for a while (no crashes), which causes me to believe it's a software-related problem.
I reinstalled Yosemite yesterday. It will only boot into safe mode since. While booting normally I can't get past the white screen.
About three months ago a faulty HD was replaced and RAM (8 GB) was added, both done in an Apple store. I've no reason yet to believe it's hardware-related because every test comes up clean, but I'm obviously not sure.
I don't know what to do next other than bringing it to the store. Any help would be much appreciated. Because I'm in safe mode my EtreCheck report differs from the normal report - if it's helpful to post it anyway, I will.
Thanks!EtreCheck version: 2.1.6 (109)

Can anyone tell from this log why my mac keeps crashing and forcing a restart?
Can anyone tell fromm the log below why my iMac keeps randomly crashing and forcing a restart? It is happening way too often now and it's driving me crazy!
Only just a few days ago I wiped my drive clean and installed a fresh OS copy of mountain lion, I then though it may be a Ram issue but a thorough test said everything was ok and I had a memory monitor window open last time it crashed which showed that barely any of the memory was in use!?
Really need some help here guys!
Thanks in advance!

With a fresh system I tried what had previously casued a kernel crash, which wa copying a video to my downloads folder, selecting it and then hitting spacebar to preview it, the video plays fine for about a minute then it jolts, freezes and then retarts with a white screen saying I need to restart.
Below is the report, im so confused!

Why does my Mac keep freezing and applications not responding?!?
Hello everyone, I have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro, 500gb HD, 4gb ram. The problem is that it keeps freezing. I am writing this on my iPhone because my laptop would probably just freeze up if I even attempted to open an application. The problem is that my laptop won't stop freezing up. As soon as I have any application open, it will stop being responsive, give me the beach ball spinning wheel thing, and I'll use command-option-escape to open the force quit menu (because at this point the mouse usually can me moved around the screen but just makes the system get worse) to force quit what ever applications I have open. Then finder will stop responding, and then nothing will work until I do a forced shut down (hold the power button down) and turn it back on again, where the same thing happens within a minute. I tried repairing permissions and doing a P RAM reset, but have had no success with either. Please help, this is ridiculous, I can barely use my laptop and I need it for school. Thanks,
-DylanYour issue sounds like the hard drive is failing or it was bumped or moved while it was operating and corrupted the data on the drive.
Hard to tell for sure, run through this list of fixes
Step by Step to fix your Mac
Note your signature says it's a 2009 model, that's almost 4 years old and near it's end of life stage of apx 4.5-5 years, a new drive might fix the machine, but clogged dust vents could be killing it too..
Out of AppleCare and warranty, looks like you might be doing it yourself.

My Mac Keeps Crashing and making me sad...
Hi there,
So I am on a MacBook Pro running OS 10.6.8.
Recently my Mac will just crash out of no where. This first started happening a way back when I was running a Google hang out and all of a sudden it would just crash out of no where. I don't have a copy of the latest report (I wish I saved it).
After paying attention over the past few months here is what I think may be the problem:
I installed a plugin for Netflix called "Silverlight". However, I kept getting errors and removed it. I don't know if this is the cause, but it could be?
-Since then I am wondering if this may have caused the issue, and additionally how do I fix it?
-My computer will also seem to crash when I am running streaming audio from sites like say NPR, but again I have no idea what the cause is.
-Is there a way to try and pin point what the issue might be and how to fix it?
I'm going to need to take it to a Genius bar aren't I?Oh wait....I had the crash log open actually here is the crash error:

Mac keeps crashing and asking me to shutdown
Hi all.
I was a PC user until a month ago when I bought a Macbook. I always assumed Macbooks are stable, but I've had a number of problems which are starting to irk me.
The main problem is I'll be reading something online (usually BBC news or emails) and then my computer will freeze with the rainbow circular graphic showing. Everything will grey out and I'll be prompted to restart thus losing other work on my Macbook. Now, this is something I didn't pay £900 for!
After the start up, I see this common problem in the log file - anyone know what this could be?

Mac keeps crashing and now all I get is a grey screen
Hi my mac kept crashing last week. I called apple and they deleted lots of things to do with cookies. It's crashed 3 times since then. Tonight it went off when I was mid flow with work. I know can't turn it ok. Apple have tried to reboot but now said I have to take into apple store. Main problem being I'm on crutches and cannot drive at moment. Any ideas would help........
