Is Mac OS 10.4 good for G4 AGP?

I have a G4 AGP which is upgraded to 1.4GHz with 1.5 GB. I instaled a full retail version of Mac OS 10.15 last year. My G4 was running smoothly. Then I installed a full retial version of Mac 10.2, upgraded to Mac OS 10.2.8. My G4 had crashed often.
A few months ago, I bought a full version of Mac OS 10.3.5. When I got it, I found out that it was an OEM for eMac. I was told by the seller that it supports all Power Mac. Indeed, when I started installation, the software states that it supports G3, G4, G5 Power Mac. After installation, my G4 has crashed frequently, although not necessarily at any particular time or with any particular application.
Here are my questions. (1) Is there any of you who is in similar situation without problems? (2) Does ny of you know the possible cause of my G4 crash? (3) If I am going to get a full version of Mac OS, is Mac OS 10.4 better than Mac OS 10.3?
Thanks.
Robert

Hi Robert,
If you are using an OEM eMac version of 10.3.5 on a powermac, it is hardly surprising that you have stability issues. I bet you got this installation kit from OWC. If you are installing an OS on any computer that is not the OS that the particular computer was delivered with, you must either use exactly the right hardware based installation, or use a full retail installation.
Given the specs you have supplied, there is no reason why a full retail installation of Tiger shouldn't work fine on your computer (provided your CPU upgrade is Tiger compatible - but most of them are). However, it's probably best that you erase and install to give you the best chance of a "clean" system.
Properly installed, Tiger is said to be a significant improvement over Panther in terms of speed and stability.
Before you install Tiger, make sure that any applications that you presently have will also work in Tiger (or that you have updates available). Also be aware that once you have installed Tiger, if you want to go back to Panther, you will have to erase and install.
Cheers!
Karl

  • Which mac (or macbook) is good for programming ?

Hi,which mac (or macbook) is good for programming ? i want for iOS and mac programming, also i want to make 3D models-objects

If you are going to do a fairly heavy load of 3D modeling I would go with a Mac Pro with as much memory as you can afford.
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shopmac/family/macpro?mco=MTg5MTY5NDQ
If you aren't a heavy 3D modeler, but will be doing so a significant amount of time than this would work:
    http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MC511LL/A?mco=MTg1ODA4MDM
If 3D modeling is only an occasional requirement you could go with one of the new MacBook Pros:
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shopmac/family/macbookpro?mco=MTkyMTUzNjk
All of them will handle your programming needs.

  • Mac Mini or iMac good for graphic apps?

I currently have an older G4, dual processor, 450 MHz, 768mb RAM running Tiger. I'm a graphic designer working mainly with Quark, Freehand, Photoshop. I'm not a heavy Photoshop user. I'm trying to decide if I should upgrade to a G5 tower, or if the new iMacs or Mac Mini would work for me. I've heard that the Mac Mini could be a step backwards for my type of use. Any informed opinions would greatly help. Obviously speed is not my number one concern, but I wouldn't want to be slower! I do have an external CD/DVD burner and I need to keep my external ZIP drive.
    Thanks,
    Kristi

The Mac Mini may not be good for your use (Intel Macs in gerneral) do not have a native version of Photoshop (PPC only app so it would run under PPC emulation), so unless you have 1+GB RAM it would run slow, not as slow as on your current machine though so you might not notice the way some others might. The Mac Mini (even the core solo 1.5Ghz) will be much faster than your current machine, any modern Mac would be.I would go for an iMac since it, IMO, is going to be a better buy, since it doesn't cost that much more, and is a top of the line consumer machine. If you don't do much Photoshoping the G5 Power Mac is overkill, IMO. You may even want to look at refurb G5 iMacs if you want to save a little money.

  • Mac OS 9 still good for the year 2006?

Hi, I was just wondering if Mac OS 9 would be good OS to keep up with today`s computer demands...
I am buying the PowerBook Pismo but I dont think it will run very well on OS X...
does anyone know if Mac OS 9 is still good?

Hi, iBTO. Mac OS 9 still does everything it did in 2000-2001, just as well as it did then. All the software you might have wanted to run in OS 9 back then, you can run in OS 9 now. What you can't do in OS 9 is run software that's been written since then to run in OS X, or view web sites that require support for newer security features, newer multimedia browser plug-ins, or newer browser versions.
The Pismo, especially the 500MHz version, will run Panther (OS X 10.3.x) or Tiger (10.4.x) quite acceptably — much better than your iBook would — if it has at least 512MB of RAM and a big, fast hard drive installed. The original 4200 RPM 6,10, and 12GB hard drives that shipped in most Pismos are too small to be very practical for use with Panther or Tiger; the 6GB drive is really out of the question. The 20GB 4200 RPM drive that some later Pismos shipped with is the minimum adequate drive for Panther or Tiger use by anyone who expects to save any significant amount of digital music, video or photos; most OS X users will soon outgrow a 20GB drive. If the Pismo you're buying has a 6, 10 or 12 GB drive now, and you'd like to be able to use iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie or any combination thereof, get yourself a 5400 RPM 60GB or 80GB hard drive and at least one 512MB RAM module for it, and you'll probably be pretty happy running OS X on it for a year or two, for a comparatively small initial investment. Or for a really minimal investment, you can keep running your five-year-old software indefinitely on it, in OS 9.

  • Which mac pro would be good for a recording studio

Hi, i am trying to gift a friend a mac pro.i am really clueless about which of the mac pro's would be best for a recording studio.

    Apple Special Mac Pro
    $2100 2.8GHz
The cpu can be upgraded to 6-core W3680
    3 x 8GB RAM
    SSD system
Mac Pro does not really benefit much from RAID of SSDs - lack of bandwidth
That is a good solid system - and one processor is even more efficient.

  • I am using the Good for Enterprise app to synch my outlook email and when I try to turn on ICloud to synch my music in ITunes I get a warning that I will not be able to synch my Iphone 4S with my computer.  Does this mean my office PC or home Mac?

I am using Good For Enterprise on my Iphone 4s to connect with my Office PC Outlook email system.  I am having trouble synching my Itunes music from my Mac at home with my IPhone 4s.  I am considering using ICloud to share the music as I also have an IPad2.  When I go to turn on the ICloud application, I get a message that alerts me to the fact I will no longer be able to synch with my computer.  Does that mean with my Office PC and my Outlook email, or my Mac and my home email and other applications?  I want to use the ICloud but don't want to screw up my Good for Enterprise application and connectivity with my Office PC and Outlook email.  What should I do to be able to update all my tunes and photos on my IPhone 4S and IPad2 from my Mac?

I seem to never tire of saying this. It was for Apple when they first announced 10.7 to disclose this. Yes, it was widely reported -- or rather, rumored -- but not by Apple. And many people who have gotten caught by this assumed that Apple itself would have told them beforehand about the loss of this very important feature which they had come to rely on. As far as I know, not even in fine print, does this appear anywhere on the Lion announcement or any of its links.
I am not saying Apple had to continue Rosetta in Lion, or forever, just that if it was going to be dropped, it should have been made known.
As relative "insiders" we should not forget that many people don't have the time, habit or interest to do this kind of research. I think it is a breach of trust that Apple has never directly made this announcement or given people the opportunity to decide beforehand if giving up their PPC apps for a new OS is a worthwhile tradeoff.

  • It's the Mac book air good for graphic design and video editing ?

I'm into graphic design for clothing logos etc. and I'm a photographer my question is, is the Mac book air good for these things?

ideally a 15" would be best for same, as referring to the 15" macbook Pro.
For a photographer, which I used to be long ago, either the Air or Pro are close in form factor for travel with only one moving part, and SSD.
The retina display in combination with the 15" would be idea as best choice for photo editing and graphic design.

  • 24" iMac any good for games (compared to Mac Pro)

    Hi,
I'm on my second Mac Pro and after no end of trouble so i'm hoping to exchange it for a 24" imac but i was wondering if it's any good for games?
I would probably configure it with the 7600gt and maybe the 2.33ghz proccessor.
My mac pro with the x1900xt ran Quake 4 and Doom3 etc at full stettings really well but i've just had to much trouble with it!

The iMac would be fine for games for now, but you are stuck with the configuration that you purchase as there is no way (for now) to upgrade the video card.
There is a thought that some OEMs might make an upgrade card, but as of now there are none.
The big advantage of the Mac Pro is that it has the PCI-express video card that you can remove the stock card from and add a newer, better card.

  • Is mac keeper good for lion os mac pro

is mac keeper good for lion os I was told it wasnt and im having problems with my mac its running sluggish and freezing up nothing is running in background either!

    Hi ...
Avoid MacKeeper. Results of an ASC forum search for MacKeeper >  Community Search: Apple Support  Comments are discouraging for the most part. You don't need third party utlities installed to take care of your Mac. For the most part they do more harm than good.
Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow the system down.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
Disabling the Lion "resume" feature may help.
    Open System Preferences > General
Deselect:  Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps
You can use Lion Recovery to repair the startup disk and reinstall the Mac OS X.

i have macbook 5.2 and i am using Mac OS 10.5.8 . which one is good for me to upgrade and how to do that..plz help me

You have a 13" Early or Mid 2009 MacBook. Either one can run OS X Mavericks with enough RAM, 2 GB minimum. But first you will need to update to OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8 so that you have the Mac App Store installed on your MacBook
    Buy this from apple;
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    Then download and update with this update combo;
OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8 v1.1 update combo
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
After this you will have the Mac App Store on your MacBook and you should be able to download and install OS X Mavericks for free!
    Your MacBook must meet these minimum tech specs to run Mavericks;

  • Keeping number of files in check is good for your Mac

I just did what I thought was impossible - reduced the space on my hard drive from 2.6GB to 11GB! The Mac is flying again, hard drive is hardly audible, I am not missing anything useful, all the projects with roughs from stage 1 through 40 have been consolidated into a few examples, copies and back-ups of copies for "just in case" during a project have gone, and gems of ideas have been organised properly into present and future projects.
I may sound like a totally disorganised worker, but not really, I can quickly find what I need, didnt really come across anything I had no recollection of, but I just fell into the trap of "whatever the size of your bin the rubbish will accumulate accordingly".
So now I have 28GB of pure hard drive data to clone to a wiped external drive and I am looking forward to being able to back up incrementally with quality files instead of dross for that rainy day.
It makes me wonder how much useless data other people are struggling long with, and is the upcoming trend for unlimited storage with Google and Amazon S3 services really needed?

    lfdc:
Good for you. Getting rid of un-needed material is an excellent way to free up disk capacity. And backing up to an external FW HDD or archiving on CD or DVD, conserves more space. The graphic interface permits quite sophisticated filing systems so that even if one has a lot of data is can be organized in a way so it can be easily accessed. For example I have on major folder called DATA, in which I have nested folders, one of which e.g. is Financial. In this I have other Folders such as Taxes, Investments etc. The investment folder can is further broken into the Brokerage firms, and each of those in individual accounts, and each account with Bought and Sold for transaction statements. In this way, even with large masses of data it is easily accessible if you know exactly where it should be. Of course, every now and then something gets saved in the wrong place and that breaks the monotony trying to find it.
Incidentally, in your first sentence you said,"reduced the space on my hard drive from 2.6GB to 11GB!" I think you meant it the other way around (I hope).
    Good luck.

  • Is IPNetSentry still good for a Mac in 2012?

Is IPNetSentry still good for a Mac in 2012?

Actually, iMovie/iDVD should create excellent DVDs! They're terrific programs -- and Final Cut Express is also excellent, if a bit hard to learn.
I've been seguing from using Premiere Elements on my PC to using it on my iMac, and I love it on Mac! Premiere Elements 9 runs very well on my computer running Snow Leopard.
I'd definitely recommend downloading the trial and giving it a test drive.

  • Is 2012 mac mini good for audio production?

is 2012 mac mini good for audio production. Take in mind that I am a novice, but that really does not matter, I want to get the right product if that is an imac instead than so be it.

It depends on the sort of audio production you'll be doing. If you're going to be working with only stereo content or just a few tracks, in GarageBand for instance, a 2012 Mac mini would probably suffice, though you'll probably want to max out the RAM in the system. If you're going to be working with many tracks simultaneously with effects, EQ, etc on many, for instance with Logic Pro X with a number of plugins going, then a Mac mini probably won't do the job. In that case you'd probably want a top-end iMac or perhaps even a Mac Pro (the new model of which should be released sometime this month).
I'd suggest that you decide on the software you'll want to run, and then ask in forums related to that software what sort of system configuration users are finding to be adequate.
    Regards.
