Is Mac OS X Install DVD Included?

If I buy a new Macintosh, is Mac OS X Install DVD included, so I can reinstall Mac OS X every time I want?

In general, you must have a later version of OS X then came with your Mac to install OS X onto it because only later versions will include the drivers your Mac requires. The only published version of 10.6 is 10.6.3, so you can't use that version to re-install a Mac that was sold with a version later than 10.6.3. This includes build numbers that are higher than the retail 10.6.3 build, as 10.6.3 builds that shipped with Macs are usually higher than the retail disks and thus the retail disks cannot be used to re-install on those Macs either. So any Macs sold after the retail version and build have to be re-installed with their own disks or with 10.7 Lion.
So you can install 10.6 from your office Mac to your home Mac with 10.5.8. I don't know if it violates any license restrictions, but you may have no choice as I don't believe Apple even sells 10.6 anymore.

I have forgotten my administrator password and can't find my Mac OS X Install Dvd to reset it, what can I do?

    OK, try this:

Be very very careful if you decide to use Terminal. Even a small typing error can cause a disaster. And terminal commands must be typed exactly as shown, including spaces.
    Good luck.

  • Mac OS X Install DVD & Applications Install DVD?

I wanted to swipe my computer clean of everything and was told using the Mac OS X Install DVD & Applications Install DVD would delete everything and reinstall everything... I thought it did until I went to do a software update and while installing the updates it said that they could not be validated and I should contact the software manufacturer. This has never happened to me before, so I assume that something didn't install properly from the Mac OS X Install DVD & Applications Install DVD. I've been told by numerous people to get new disks and reinstall again and everything will be fine, however I don't know where to get them. Any suggestions?

those dvd's are just required if you plan to reinstall your operating system and included applications. Keep them in a safe place, but there's no need to use as of now.

  • How to recover I photos from hard drive?  I was told by Apple tech to reinstall my MAC OS X Install DVD, after doing so all of my data has been wiped out.

I had an issue with my Mac and called Apple the tech told me to reinstall my MAC OS X Install DVD.  I specifically asked if I needed to do a back up before doing so, I was told that it would not be necessary none of my data would be lost.  After installation everything was wiped out.  I am most concerned about retrieving my I photos.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

You did not do a reinstall but rather an Erase and Install. If you don't have a backup, which you should have already had, then you need to see the following:
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Unable to use Mac OS X Install DVD

My iMac came with Mac OS X Install DVD, but since I have upgraded to Mountain Lion through the Apple App Store and have made a bootable USB. So after formatting my HDD I'm unable to boot from the USB or the DVD. When prompt to select "where you want to install OS X" from the Install OS X menu I am unable to select the device (This disk doesn’t use the GUID Partition Table Scheme), Also I have tried using the factory DVDs but nothing happens, after loading the DVD and holding down the "Option Key" (Alt) the DVD then gets ejected. I have run out of ways to correct this problem, and I have sold this computer online and need to ship soon, and your immediate response is greatly appreciated!

UPDATE I have finally got it to install

  • After i ran the installer program to reset to factory settings, in the Disk Utility menu there is no hard drive listed.  How do I properly install the OS?  On the left hand side it lists: 250.06 GB Hitachi HTSS..., Mac OS X Install DVD, HL-DT-ST DVDRW G2

The open window says, "Mav OS Install DVD" when I choose Disk Utilities.  The options listed on left are: 250.06 GB Hitachi HTSS..., Mac OS X Install DVD, HT-DT-ST DVDRW G2 3N and Mac OS X Install DVD.  How do I install the program on the hard drive?  This computer was given to me by a friend and I was trying to restore it to factory settings.  Thanks!!

You want to boot from the Install DVD and install OSX on the Hitachi drive.

Perian 1.2.3 *should* work for both QuickTime & and QTX in Mountain Lion. Regardless of the filetype container, whether it is a Matroska (.mkv) or a .mov. As to the actual encoding of the file (h264, .mp2, whatever..) I have found most play, even older formats.
Even though it's no longer supported and is a dead project, it works just fine. It will load as a System Preference file and adds to the Other category in them.
I think in 10.8 you've still got support for QTX so it may work with that. (in Mavericks, it only works for QT7)
If not, just run QuickTime 7.6.6.

  • MacBook Pro 7,1 won't boot Mac OS X Install DVD

I recently replaced the standard hard drive that came with my MacBook Pro 7,1 with a SSD and when I try to install the original Mac OS X Install DVD (version 10.6.3)  that came with the computer, the drives spins up, and the grey screen with the spinning city circle comes up and the spinning circle eventually freezes and doesn't work past that point (waited at least 30 mins) minus a hard shutdown.
I have reset the SMC, zapped the Pram, tried doing an online install from disk 2, ran the apple hardware test (no problems) held down the option key and booted to the disk from there! Nothing works (and I have installed OS X from a clean SSD on other computers.
    Please help!!
    Thanks!!!

Did you prepare the new SSD?
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    Now try installing Snow Leopard.

  • My iMac doesnt want to read/run the Mac OS X Install DVD, what can I do?

My iMac doesnt want to read/run the Mac OS X Install DVD, what can I do? What I want to do is format my mac, so I need to run de DVD Installer when the Mac start up holding C buttom. Is there any other way to do it?

You must be using the original grey OS X discs that shipped with the machine or a retail OS X installation disc.
If you are attempting to use a grey OS X disc that did not ship with your iMac, it will not work since they are machine-specific.
Other than those reasons, it is possible the disc is dirty or scratched, or your optical drive has simply failed. In the latter event you need to replace it or use an external optical disc drive, or boot your iMac in FireWire Target Disk Mode and use another Mac to read the disc.

  • Mac mini server install DVD - install on a different computer

I bought a Mac mini server (= a Mac mini with a Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server pre-installed) a while ago. I am planning to install Lion Server on the same Mac Mini and get rid of the Snow Leopard installation DVD. My question is, can the DVD that came with the Mac mini be used to install the server OS on a different computer (another Mac mini or iMac etc.)? or is it somehow tied to the original Mac mini?
    Thanks!

Install discs included with a Mac are only able to install on the same model Mac. However historically Mac OS X Server install discs are not limited in the same way. (Remember there is no such thing as a Lion install disc.)
The server install disc is more typically limited in being an older version of Mac OS X e.g. 10.6.3 and thus not able to boot and install on the latest model Macs. It is however possible to boot and install on an older Mac e.g. an older Mac mini but install on to an external hard disk which might even be the internal hard disk of another Mac connected via FireWire Target Disk Mode. You can then run the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Server Combo update to update it to the latest Snow Leopard Server version which will then boot successfully on all the current Macs including those that have only ever shipped with Lion.
Since a DVD disk takes very little space I would suggest you don't throw it away.

  • Please help me.ı delete mac os on my harddisk and ı format it ntfs.now ı have a mac os x install dvd but not working.ı think it is not working because of my hard disk format is ntfs.what can ı do?????

The HD must be partitioned with GUID partition map and Mac OS extended (journalled) file system. Do not partition the drive into two. When you have a working OS X system, use Boot Camp to create the Windows partition and install Windows.
If you're trying to install Snow Leopard on a Mac that was delivered with Lion installed =
    1. It may not be possible at all depending on the Mac.
    2. If it is possible, it cannot be done with the retail SL disc which is 10.6.3
    3. The only way it can be done is to obtain the original grey discs which would have come with the Mac if it hadn't had Lion installed in the supply chain. They will be at least 10.6.6 and more likely 10.6.7 or .8. You can try to obtain those from Apple Customer Services.

  • Where to get a mac os x install DVD for my 12-inch powerbook G4 1.33 GHz

    Hello All!
I purchased a 12-inch PB a while ago and since then I lost my Mac OS install Discs (1 and 2). And now I need to reinstall everything because my PB won't start. Does anybody know where I could get that? I looked into the Support and Download sections of the Apple site, but didn't find anything.
I know that I must use the exact disc that goes with the 12-inch PB, so I can't use my MBP install DVDs...HELP PLEASE! I need this 12-inch PB for my girlfriend...
    Thanks!

    Ben:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I suggest that you call Apple Customer Relations and explain your situation. Have your computer Serial number handy. They will ship you the install disks. There is a service fee, or about $60, I think.
Please post back with questions or an update on your progress.
    Cheers

  • Installation fails on Application Install DVD included with Macbook Pro

Not sure if this is the appropriate forum... please move/advise if there is a better one.
I'm restoring my Macbook Pro to the factory default settings using the supplied DVDs and the installation instructions provided on the OS X Install DVD.
The Application Install DVD fails about 2/3 of the way through the installation process. The error simply says Installation Failed in big, bold mocking letters.
I'm assuming the DVD is damaged... I don't know what else it could be considering it's a clean install and I have no problems installing the OS.
Apple is sending a new DVD, but my real question is this:
Is the DVD that comes with the Macbook Pro more or less the same as purchasing iLife? In other words, can I continue configuring my system, installing other applications, moving over backed up media, etc., and then install the Applications DVD when it arrives - or - is it best to install both the OS and Applications DVD on a clean system?

OK--and my bad for not answering the question you actually asked.
I checked my original system discs for my MBP, and did not find a separate iLife disc. So I would assume that the iLife applications would be on the disc that won't install, although I cannot be 100% certain of your situation since I am not sure exactly what Mac you have and how the software was originally shipped. I know my iBook had a separate iLife disc. The MBP system discs seem to be dual layer DVD's, so they would hold much more than the CD's that originally came with my iBook.
I think you would want to have the application installed and updated before transferring any files that depend on that application. For example, if you have a lot of photos, you would want to have iPhoto or some other photo application installed before moving your photography files. You can check in Finder to see what you have, and you can directly download some applications like iTunes. So you can probably transfer the files that you have the application for, and wait on any that will have to be installed from your DVD that is coming.
    Hope this helps! Good luck!

  • Mac OS X Install DVD erased my HD: a nightmare story

Stay tuned as I will update this thread, but I figured I better post it ASAP in case anyone else gets the bright idea to install 10.5 over target disk mode.
    *Short story for now:*
G5 running 10.4. Disc drive broken, won't read DVDs, and keyboard won't function (except for return key) when booted with option into the boot select screen for some reason. Only install solution seems to be to install with the disc in a laptop, installing onto the G5 HD as target disk mode. I chose Archive and Install to be safe.
The installer seems to get all the way through, then fails with the error (paraphrased):
    *INSTALL FAILED*
*Mac OS X could not be installed on your computer.*
    <warning icon>
*The installer was unable to import your user directory from the previous system. You will need to create a new user account in Setup Assistant. Your original account is stored in "/Previous System/" folder.*
*Click "restart" to try installing again.*
The G5 won't boot (question mark folder), turns out the only thing on the drive now is as folder called BaseSystem.pkg.217aY51ZZ which contains 41 language related .plan files and an empty Receipts folder. Oh, and a PDF of an old DiskWarrior report, for some reason.

A user burned DVD+R DL version of any version of Mac OS X is asking for trouble without a backup. Technical reasons alone can cause problems. Apple uses commercial grade optical discs when selling optical discs to the general public. These are hard to come by, and have properties consumer grade discs don't have, such as DVD+R DL discs that are able to be read on original Apple DVD-R only drives. Secondly when you make a copy, it rarely if ever is as good as the original because optical drives face the same type of sector errors that hard drives do. Third, if the drive you say is broken is the one that originally made the copy, likely it was already getting broke at the time the copy was made, meaning the copy you made was already subject to impurities of being on a broken or dirty drive. You should have tested the copy on a backed up system regardless, before trusting it to your system after the drive was definitively broke. Now for target disc mode installs, you have other variables you should be aware of:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=6031855
We are of course assuming you have license to make that copy. If you aren't, none of the advise should be taken here, because terms of use forbid us discussing illegal activities on the right hand side of this page.

  • Mac OS X Install DVD problem - PLEASE HELP

I click "Install Mac OS X" and it prompts me to retart to begin instalation. WHne I do it asks me for my password and then restarts. it then reloads and doesn't start installing anything. am i doing something wrong? PLEASE HELP

If the DVD is from a specific Mac model, not yours, then it won't work. You need a standard retail version of Tiger.
You might try inserting the DVD in the optical drive, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold the "C" key until the computer starts up from the DVD (gray screen with dark gray Apple logo.) Release the key when the spinning gear appears.
If that doesn't work you may have a bad DVD. You say you burned a copy of the Tiger DVD. If the Tiger DVD you copied is not yours then you are technically pirating Apple's software which is illegal. These Discussions are sponsored and provided by Apple, so they look dimly on people who are pirating their software. If this be the case you would be wise not to post here.
