Is Mac OS X install media on Mac OS X Install Disc 1 or 2?  I have to reset my password because I forgot it.

I need to retrieve my password.  It directs me to install insesrt the Mac OS X install media.  I have MacBook Mac OS X Install Disc 1 and 2.  Can somewhat direct me as to which intall disc I should use?  I don't want to mess up.Install disc 1 tells me to hold down C key as computer starts up which is what the reset password direction tells me to do.  Thanks for help!

Ok.  I put in install disc 1, restarted etc.  Went to utilities >reset password etc.  It would not save it for the Systems Admin root.  I tried four times including rebooting...the message said not save or general something didn't work.  grrr...any ideas?  thanks again for your time.

Do you have OS X and OS 9 installed on your Mac? If so, startup with the Option key depressed. This will open the Startup Manager window. Select the OS you want to start from & click the right arrow.

Hello Pete from another old guy,
It sounds like you have an older iMac than the 2006 and newer model this forum covers. The problem is that, in 2006, Apple changed from PowerPC to Intel processors and third-party developers soon stopped making new software for the older processors. That's why you cannot upgrade Flash player--the current version requires a Mac the "2006 and later" processor.
However, not having a current version of FlashPlayer should not affect your ability to download. If you try downloading, do you get an error message or does something else happen?
Do you have another web browser like FireFox or Camino on your computer?
but would love to get my MAC back up to date and running right.
Well, "running right" may be doable but "up to date" may not be. You are already at as high a Mac OS level that a pre-2006 Mac can use.  We need to pin down your variant to make recommendations. From your Apple menu at the left end of the menu bar, do "About this Mac":
    That brings up this window:
Let us know what yours say for "processor." The two choices are "PowerPC" as in the example, or "Intel." If you  have an Intel processor, you have more options available.
    Awaiting your report,
    Allan

  • How do you clean up the mac os x startup disc? It seem to have run out of space...

Continually getting the 'force quit applications' message with a note that the start-up disc has no more space available for application memory. Where do I get access to this in order to clean up and delete unwanted stuff?
Any help appreciated as I'm not a Mac user by trade : )

    WAY TOO SMALL
    list: page, hibernation
cache for system, browsers and thumbnails and such (3-4GB)
the "core" of Windows 64-bit is 20GB
all the updates need 10GB temp space
apps and data and anything else you install on top of that
rule of thumb: it will consume 32GB and it needs 10-15GB on top of that and any OS (incl Mac) needs 20% free space to function properly, and on SSDs allow room for write provisioninig (a month's worth of writes).
    Trial - practice makes perfect.
Paragon CampTuneX can resize if you have space to reallocate
20GB may have been fine for XP, not Vista or later.

  • I have a Powerbook G4 17" and I put in a new harddrive but I broke my 2nd install disc; what options do I have?

I don't have the old harddrive and the 1st disc has already been installed. The OS version is 10.4.2. My father found this powerbook and it was just missing the harddrive. I'm planning to give this to my neice since she has wanted a mac for quite a while but she's pretty horrible with computers and this seems like a better alternative to buying her a new one.

I'm planning to give this to my neice since she has wanted a mac for quite a while but she's pretty horrible with computers and this seems like a better alternative to buying her a new one.
This approach is certainly less expensive than a new system, however, you should be aware that if your niece will be using the system for Internet access, that the PowerBook generally won't have the horsepower to deal with streaming video. In fact some sites require an Intel processor to access video. Having audio and video stuttering is not uncommon. However, if there are some specific applications or email that your niece will be using, it could work fine for that.
However, back to the PowerBook. This vendor is one that sells unopened Apple software, if you need Tiger or Leopard, iLIfe, etc.  If you go to the used market, be sure any gray-faced disk you might buy is a PowerBook disk, as the original OS X disks are locked to the system types they are delivered with. So an OS X disk for an iMac, for example, won't work on a PowerBook.

  • How do I install my LG Super Multi BLADE Mac compatible external drive without the install disc?

I can't find my install disc! How do I install my LG Super Multi BLADE Mac compatible external drive without the install disc?

You don't have installer discs with that model. What do you need to do? USB and Thunderbolt external drives do not require any special software. If you need to partition and format them, then use Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.

    Changing your administrator password

Here's one method to reset the password without the install disc:
    1. boot computer and hold the "apple" key and the "s" key.
    2. wait for terminal show
    3. release keys
    4. type without the quotes: "/sbin/mount -uaw"
    5. press enter
    6. type without the quotes: "rm /var/db/.applesetupdone
    7. press enter
    8. type without the quotes: "reboot"
    9. press enter
This will let you create a new admin account when you reboot your computer.
Also, without the discs, look at Mac OS X Tip - No Password, No Root, No CD? No Problem.

Here is a way to get around not knowing the admin password on Macs.
To reset your OS X password without an OS X CD you need to enter terminal and create a new admin account:
       1. Reboot
       2. Hold apple + s down after you hear the chime.
       3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
              * mount -uw /
              * rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
              * shutdown -h now
       4. After rebooting you should have a brand new admin account. When you login as the new admin you can simply delete the old one and you’re good to go again!

  • Reinstalling Tiger using a install disc from another mac?

I have 2 macbook pros. A brand new one with the Santa Rosa chip and 1 with the older chip. Can I use the disc that came with the new mac with the newest version of OS and other programs to update the older macbook pro?
    Thanks.

    rick.pearl wrote:
Does this mean that I shouldn't use the Generic Tiger install disc to reformat the macbook pro either? Would I be missing drivers or anything by doing this?
Well, if by "Generic" you mean the boxed retail version of Tiger, you wouldn't be able to boot from it. No boxed retail Tiger has the Intel software or drivers necessary to boot an Intel Mac. Only the discs shipped with Intel CPUs have the Intel OS on them.
Presumably this is not the case with the Leopard discs, which must have the code for both architectures...

  • Mac OS X installation disc

So i have a late 2011 MBP, and i want to get windows 7 installed on it. The thing is, as I've read through some of the BCA instructions and it says i will need a Mac OS X installation disc but i don't have one. So how can i need it, when i wasn't given one during the purchase of the computer?

You will need the Bootcamp "Windows Support Software" download, and you will get the opportunity to perform it during the Bootcamp setup.
The disc referred to is if you are using Snow Leopard, which you are not.

If you do indeed have OS X 10.6.8 = Snow leopard then you should have the App Store.
    If not...

    Keunepete,
When I ordered my books for the ICND1 and ICND2, they came with a CD in the back pocket (sleeve) of the book. Along with the CD was a thick piece of paper that had the activation code on it. It was a white, square piece of paper with big black print on it. Did you buy your book used? Was the CD sealed in the back pocket?

  • How to reinstall snow leopard without install disc

    Hi guys,
I recently took my computer in to an authorised repairer (MyMac Flinders St., Melbourne Australia) to get my LCD screen replaced under warranty, as it had developed a yellow line running down the right hand side of the screen. Whilst it was in the shop I decided to have a new 1TB hard drive put in, and get the OS updated to Snow Leopard (they loaded it up, I did not get install disc). Since then, I have had massive problems with my computer. The computer sometimes would not turn on, turn off, or simply freeze. I took the computer back in and was told it was a software issue, so they did a format reinstall, and told me the problem was fixed. Within hours of getting the computer home, the same problem occurred. I took it back, was told the same thing, and with the same end result (computer not working). I then took it into the Apple store in Chadstone Melbourne, and was told it was the hard drive that was at fault, and not the software at all. I then tried to get the hard drive replaced through MyMac Flinders St., as I now thought it might be the hard drive that was the problem, and with great reluctance and many minutes on the phone they finally agreed. I had big problems getting this agreed to, because my computer was now out of warranty. So, I guess this is a two part question:
    1. I've got the computer back now, with the new hard drive, and it seemed to be working fine, but i've since discovered my phone was not syncing up correctly, and was told by Apple support to check my iSync.. to which I was greeted with the error message "iSync can't be launched iSync Manager not available" to which Apple support gave me a step by step instruction download to fix:
In the Finder, choose Utilities from the Go menu.
    Open Terminal.
In the Terminal window that opens, type or paste the following command on a single line:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/SyncServices.framework/Versions/A/Resources/resetsync .pl full
    Press Return.
When the operation is complete quit Terminal
The only problem being.. the Apple Terminal was missing. The program logo was there, but unable to launch. I figure my best bet will be to do a reinstall of Snow Leopard, but I am unsure of how to do this without the physical install disc. I have a backup on an external hard drive.
    2. With my computer being now out of AppleCare warranty, I would like to know my options if this problem is unfixable, as my computer was fine before I took it into the authorised repairer, and also in warranty. I don't think I should wear the financial costs of replacing this computer.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
    Steve

I assumed it was normal to load up an OS without giving the disk..
    Absolutely not.
Are you 100% sure they have acted outside the law here?
If you are absolutely sure that they didn't give you a disk, then yes, what they have done is essentially software piracy. Of course, it could simply be construed as a mistake. It is not unusual, however careless it might be, for repair folks to assume you were running SL when they reinstall your system.
However, if you specifically asked them to upgrade you to SL, as it sounds like you did, and they charged you a fee for that upgrade but didn't give you a disk, then that's theft pure and simple.
Oh, and that link you sent for AHT.. It's telling me I'd have to have the install disk to run the hardware test. Is there a way to do it without the disk?
It requires one of the gray disks that shipped with your machine, not the retail SL disk that you don't have. If you have misplaced those disks, then you're a bit hosed... Apple will replace the gray disks for a small fee, and that's the only way you're going to get AHT.
Newer machines apparently have a small hidden partition with the AHT boot system on it, but if your machine didn't ship with SL, I don't think it'll be one of those.

  • I've lost my install discs... What can I do? .

So, on my way home with my computer several stops were made, and during one of them, a bag was dropped unnoticed. Problem is it contained the install discs for the computer (specs at the bottom of my note).
Can someone tell me if it will be possible to purchase new discs from apple? I absolutely need them because when the computer was being set up (transferring data), my cousin "replaced" my font book with the one from my other G4 (800mhz/10.4.11), thinking the fonts would carry over.
Now I can't open the font book at all, which means that I can't install new fonts for my photoshop program. I get an error message saying, *"You cannot use the application "Font Book" with this version of OSX."*
If anyone has any suggestions on where I can buy restore discs for my G4 or how I can fix my font book application, I'd really appreciate it.

Okay, but will that reinstall my font book? The person I bought my computer from had leo already installed. I offered to buy the master disc
from him (the disc he used on my computer), but he wouldn't sell. Instead, he just gave me a burned copy "in case I ran into trouble". Luckily,
that was in my purse, but the others discs were in a separate bag and were lost.
I'm not having any issue with anything except my fonts. Someone suggested using Pacifist to remove the font book from the install disc,
but I don't have the ones that came with the computer anymore.
Do you know if the font book can be extracted from the leopard disc?
(Forgive me if my questions seem silly, but I'm not savvy at all.)

I have a Mac Pro with four hard drives. I currently have Lion installed on one hard drive. I want to have the option to boot from either Lion or Snow Leopard. How can I do this?

It's best to install Snow Leopard on one of the three remain drives without an Operating System.
You can then install the applications you need from the original media. Create a User Account using Setup Assistant.
Do you want to migrate User Accounts from the OSX LIon boot drive, or are you keeping the User Accounts separate?
Dual-booting just requires holding the option key during startup and selecting either Lion or Snow Leopard.
