Is Mac virus-free?

Is the Mac running Leopard as virus free as some say? My understanding is that once a good password is set for the root account, one can download without fear. I've just gotten DSL and I'm worried about being connected 24/7.

Well, I don't have any precise list of viruses, but there are a lot of discussions about it in the net.
Of which almost every bit of it is speculation or users who think they have a virus simply because their Macs aren't running well.
Put this simple search phrase in Google:
"os x"+virus
It returns almost nothing of substance. There's a couple of links loudly proclaiming the first real OS X virus. It's nothing but a gag video showing the desktop items falling all over the place as someone turns the Mac. Very clever, but not a real piece of malware at all.
The only other one that receives any mention at all is the Leap.A virus (and its various names). That one starts out as a Trojan you have to download and install. Once you do that, it acts as a virus and tries to infect buddies in your iChat list. Unless of course someone else you know was the one to download and install it. Then as it tries to infect you from their Mac, to you, it's strictly acting as a virus. It was a poorly written piece of malware and infected a very small percentage of users.
Other than that, there's nothing.
You can never be too careful, imo.
True enough, and applies to any OS. There's no such thing as a bulletproof OS. Read/watch the news, sites like this and other trustworthy, verifiable venues.

  • Is my mac virus free?

there seems to be some problems with mail and safari (slow, not closing down).

A virus should be the absolute last thing to consider when facing such problems on a Mac. See my Mac Malware Guide:

  • Mac Or PC. Virus free or not?

This is more for S... and giggles than anything else, but I want to know if people have the Answer. Which is better, PC's or Mac's? And the bigger question, What makes macs (Unix based) get less if any Viruses?

I thought it was because macs have less of the market share, excluding all the other unix based os's like, Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, DragonFly BSD, OpenSolaris, AuroraUX, Darwin, OpenDarwin, PureDarwin, Minix, GNU Mach, GNU Hurd, Plan 9, Syllable, Inferno (based off plan 9), and E/OS. just to name a few unix based os's. Mac OS X is based upon the Mach kernel. Which relies on certain parts from FreeBSD's and NetBSD's implementation of Unix were incorporated in Nextstep (Closed source base of mac os (NOT UNIX based, but very much like unix)), the core of Mac OS X. According my handy Wikipedia source on linix.
Linux is predominantly known for its use in servers; in 2009 it held a server market share ranging between 20–40%. Most desktop computers run either Microsoft Windows or Mac OS X, with Linux having anywhere from a low of an estimated 1–2% of the desktop market to a high of an estimated 4.8%. However, desktop use of Linux has become increasingly popular in recent years, partly owing to the popular Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint, and openSUSE distributions and the emergence of netbooks and smartphones running an embedded Linux.
    (acording to wiki)
Windows xp is the king of the os world still. the one main problem is that 49% of all windows based os's out there, are xp and that number is quickly dropping. According to wikipedia, there seems to be a large spick ing the amount of macs being sold. currently at (july 2010) 15% of all os's out there (that quote comes from a thread from apple and cnet) are mac os X based users. a large jump from just three years ago wich was only 4.66% being mac os X based.
but also according to Wiki and deep threads from apple, cnet, and geeks.com, the main reason why macs are Virus free (for the typical user, is because they are "read only systems" meaning that they can only read the interactions with the mother board to emulate the images on the screen. You can program a virus to work on a mack, but every mac's network bios key is different, and that is the key to infecting a mac and only when it is in "Deep Freeze."
Hacking into a mac seems more plausible than programing a virus for one, there is a web site, and I forget the name, but it basically is a news story of some computer engenier hacking into a mac in under 5 minutes. the only problem with that is that it is true, only if that mac is hardwired in vie ethernet cable or as in hacking steps, bluetooth (google mac os X page/hacking).
in all honesty, I really hope that the apple market share grows. I have a couple stocks in apple. but as a business guy, and once a teenager, I KNOW WHEN TO PULL OUT. (sex tual joke for those of you that don't get humor.) But I really hope that apple does do good to make microsoft do more, and enthuse GOOGLE to actually compete in the computer world instead of just making software.
please if you think any of the above statements are inaccurate, please tell me why. I did all my homework and this is what I came up with.

  • Does a Mac don't really need an anti-virus? Is it really a virus free?

Does a Mac don't realyy need an anti-virus? Is it really a virus free? If not what is the recomended anti-virus for MacBook?

Thomas A Reed's site provides everything you need to know.  I just want to re-affirm one part (and this is also on Thomas's site)... just because OS X is fairly resistant to viruses, that does not mean you can do whatever you want without any concerns.  For the most part, you'll be safe if you don't actually authorize something to be installed (with a few exceptions).  You won't typically need to worry about getting a virus just by visiting a website or opening an email.  However, once you give authorization for something to be installed, it can do pretty much anything.  We've done a great job as a community at touting the security of OS X (and it is very secure), but that has led a lot of less technical people to think that they can do anything without worry.  If you download something through a torrent site (or other unknown source) and install it, you've given that application full access to your system.  Even if the program you download appears to be what you expected it to be, additional malicious code could have been inserted and you would never know.  I also like to point out that the concept of torrents unto itself is not bad.  Plenty of companies distribute their software via torrents.  It's particularly useful for smaller companies as it can take a significant amount of bandwidth demand off of their servers.  However, you should only use the torrent link directly from the developer's site, not from a torrent search engine.

  • Are Apple products virus-free?

Hi! I own a Macbook Pro, and recently i heard that Apple products are not virus-free anymore, and I would like to know if its true. I download a lot of things and open a lot of pages every day, so its very important to me. In case its possible, please recommend an antivirus.
    Thank You!

There are many categories of malware, viruses are just one category. If you are talking about just viruses, there are few to no viruses on the Mac in the wild. Also, many other types of malware are written to run on Windows and are not compatible with OS X. There is some malware written for the Mac but most of it is not widespread.
To help protect you while surfing the Web, Apple restricts use of technologies like Flash and Java that are often vectors for malware.
But in the end, you still have to be careful because many types of malware don't hack your computer, they hack you through phishing or other social engineering techniques that trick you into entering personal information into a fake site or clicking on a bad link. Because these are hacks on humans themselves, no antivirus can stop them and no system can prevent them, you just have to be smart and keep your eyes open.
And don't get greedy, since a big way malware spreads is through those downloads of "Free" pirated software and content from unauthorized sources that add who-knows-what to files you download.

  • I bought a macbook pro with Mountain Lion installed.  Can I install a copy of mountain lion on my other mac for free?

I bought a Macbook pro with Mountain Lion. Can I install Mountain Lion on my other mac for free? How do I do that? Thanks!

On the bright side, it's only $20.
And I would certainly like to have the ownership (and even a copy of the installer on my archive drive), "just in case."
Here are some questions -- which I cannot test because it's not my situation:
Has anyone acquired a pre-owned Mac with Mountain Lion installed but which shipped with an earlier OS version? For those in that circumstance:
Have you been able to apply Mountain Lion update(s)?
How about reinstall ML with Recovery HD?
After either updating or reinstalling, does ML appear in Purchases in App Store?
    Just curious.

  • How can I ensure that my iPad is virus free?

wwhen I'm surfing on a site suddenly a message appeared showing that virus detected scan now . I immediately closed that one.
so I now thinking how my iPad is virus free without scan by any antivirus ?

I'm not aware of any viruses for iOS devices - as long as haven't/don't jailbreak it.
iOS is a sandboxed environment, the only place (unless you are developing or testing an app) to download programs onto it is the app store (App Store on your iPad, and the app store on your computer's iTunes)

  • How can I download free online games and be assured they are virus free?

I try to dowload free online games which such site claim to be virus free, however
amessage appears from mozilla which disallowed such program and states to
hit the allow button to override????

Firefox usually will require you to approve installing an add-on (particularly an extension), because they have access to everything you do in Firefox.
I don't think most games require their own add-ons. You might consider trying some other games that just run in the Flash player.

  • Is it possible to use aim with a mac for free?

Is it possible to use aim with a mac for free?

If you mean the application AIM for Mac, it will depend on your download speed.
If you mean "Can I use iChat with an AIM a screen name and does it cost anything ?" then the answer is Yes you can and no it does not cost and there is no download to do.
If you mean "Can I use the AIM service with an @mac screen name and can this be done for free ? " then the answer is again yes.
A trail account cost nothing and will work in ichat after the 60 days is up
A Paid for but Lapsed account will also work in iChat and for this purpose can now be considered free.
As I said and hinted at before your first question does not make it clear what you are actually asking.
The Application AIM for Mac is stuck at version 4.7 and does not do Video or Audio Only chats.
It has things that are useful in tweaking Buddy Lists in iChat but it is not specifically needed to contact AIM Buddies.

  • The 'New' Mac Virus...please explain

    Good Afternoon all,
I too have read the google news. So here are my concerns/questions:
1-What is an ARDAgent and how/why would I 'run such an executable'?
2-How can someone have such unabandoned access to my system if I have minimal sharing turned on?
I have more but I guess those two questions are a good start.

    Tom IV wrote:
As far as the google story, it starts out as "Two Mac viruses were discovered over the weekend..."
Can you point me to this story and what weekend was this? It sounds like old news and the exploit involves you willfully giving administrative permission to some website to download a program. Not likely you would fall for it.
As far as security, while there are no known viruses that attack Mac OS X at the present time, it is possible for spyware to get onto your Mac.
So I go to lenghts to protect my user. A hosed system can be replaced but a compromised user folder is compromised forever. Along with all your important data like bank records, credit cards, ... I.e. your "identity" stolen.
The best way to avoid that is by using your built-in firewall which is industrial strength and/or a hard wired router, downloading only from "trusted" sites, installing all security updates and being careful about what you give administrative power to. It is also recommended to run day to day tasks from a non-admin account.
Don't use Limewire or any other P2P service to download your software, get it from reputable sources. In addition, always keep at least your users backed up, preferably a clone of your entire system on a separate disk. And put your sensitive passwords, bank accounts, credit card numbers in a "secure note" in a new keychain or in an encrypted folder.
If and when a Mac virus does appear it will be headline news and you can download the AV software then. If you feel you have to run an AV program I'd suggest ClamXav a mac friendly freeware app that is very stable with Tiger. It will check for known virus signatures at any rate.
    Hope this helps.

  • Heard 2 days ago first mac virus

PC friends tell me first mac virus discovered last week
    True?

I didn't believe him so googled. Found this:
The OSX/Leap-A worm spreads via the iChat instant messaging system, forwarding itself as a file called latestpics.tgz to contacts on the infected users' buddy list. When the latestpics.tgz archive file is opened on a computer it disguises its contents with a JPEG graphic icon in an attempt to fool people into thinking it is harmless.
Some owners of Mac computers have held the belief that Mac OS X is incapable of harboring computer viruses, but Leap-A will leave them shellshocked.
