Is MacKeeper a real program that works?

I have noticed a frequent increase in the popups ads on both safari and chrome, despite the pop up blocker still being on (does anyone know why that is?). One ad in particular that is the most frequent is for MacKeeper. Is this a real program? I have had my MacBook Pro since 2010. It is still good as new but it does operate a litter slower and I think it could be due to all the junk files. Is there a program that will clean up your mac to improve speed?

You may have inadvertently installed adware. Eradicating it is simple. For an explanation or how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for one possible solution read How to install adware.
If that does not describe your problem please post a representative screenshot of the anomaly:
Screenshots (Mac):
To take a screenshot hold ⌘ Shift 4 to create a selection crosshair. Click and hold while you drag the crosshair over the area you wish to capture and then release the mouse or trackpad. You will hear a "camera shutter" sound. This will deposit a screenshot named "Screen Shot...." followed by a date and time on your Desktop.
When you post your response, click the "camera" icon above the text field:
This will display a dialog box which enables you to choose the screenshot file (remember it's on your Desktop) and click the Insert Image button. If you are not using full screen mode you can simply drag the image into the text entry field.
⌘ Shift 4 and then pressing the space bar captures the frontmost window.
⌘ Shift 3 captures the entire screen.
Don't capture or upload any information you consider personal. To edit an existing screenshot, read How to edit a screenshot.
Drag the screenshot to the Trash after you post your reply.
Is there a program that will clean up your mac to improve speed?
No. The only programs that claim that ability will do the opposite, while "cleaning" $40 from your wallet. They are very successful at that task. As applied to maintaining your Mac, please purge the terminology "clean" from your lexicon. Macs do not require, and will not benefit from, the plethora of aggressively marketed "cleaning" apps available.
Never install any product that claims to "clean up", "speed up",  "optimize", "boost" or "accelerate" your Mac; to "wash" it, "tune" it, or to make it "shiny". Those claims are absurd.
Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.

I purchased Label Printer Pro 7, but it does not work. It crashes. I press print, and the program closes. I press save, and the program closes. I press print and the program closes. I have had an email exchange with Pabel Printer Pro 7, but the best they could offer was to go to Utilities and click on fixed permssions. I have done that several times, and the program still doesn't work.
Can you please recommend an address.shipping label program that works with Avery labels that I can purchase, and that is also simple to use?
    Thanks,

  • Is there a program that works like the old iPhoto?

Is there a program that works like the old iPhoto?
The old iPhoto is my ideal program. Unfortunately, it does not work on my new operating system. I like having the ability to look over my images with a slide show. However, the new package folder does not give me complete access to my pictures. Is there a program that will have both slide show with music options, and the general folder for the files? I heard that Picasa was supposed to have a general folder, but it is using the iPhoto package.
I have looked over the solutions to getting access to images from the iPhoto package mentioned in the discussion forum. I would like a simpler system that works like the old iPhoto. Is this a possibility? I do not feel comfortable putting my original photo files into a system that does not let me look at the file information, and I would like to have the original benefits of iPhoto tools.
    Thank you for your time.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The current iPhoto is laid out specifically the way it is because of folks like you
Since iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Even in the old iPhoto it was never correct to access the iPhoto Library Folder.
However, the new package folder does not give me complete access to my pictures.
This is untrue. Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
    There they all are.
Standard Warning which applies to every version of iPhoto: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
I do not feel comfortable putting my original photo files into a system that does not let me look at the file information
What information are you missing? If you can tell us we may be able to help you more.

  • Anyone know of any greeting card program that works with OS  x?

anyone know of any greeting card program that works with OS X?

There is no solution. The Canon UFR2 driver used by the MF series does not work when connected to a Windows share or a wireless print server, including the Airport Extreme or Express. The problem is wholly to do with the way in which Canon has written this driver and therefore the Canon support staff should know this and tell you (although their Mac knowledge in Australia is pitiful and most likely the same in your region).
If you had a model with Ethernet, then you could connect it to the wireless router and print via IP > LPD. But I know that your MF4150 only has USB as I mate of mine had one and he had exactly the same issue on Tiger, which I documented on the Tiger forum and the Airport printing forum.
So, don't waste your money on a print server. Get rid of the Canon and get something that will work for all your OS's. If I can suggest, the safest purchase would be to get a model that supports Postscript. While this does cost more, it will help to avoid any limitations that can occur when using a vendors proprietary printer language, like Canon's UFR2.

  • Yesterday I downloaded Lion. It looked really nice. I then noticed several of my programs that worked flawlessly in Snow Leopard STOPPED working. One of them was my SilverFast scanning software.A new version would cost $450.00. I am going back to Snow Le

I downloaded Lion yesterday. What a nightmare.
Before even using it, I noticed several of my programs would not work with Lion.
My Appleworks 6 program was dead as well as some other programs that I had been using for yrs. I have a dual core iMac.
If I wanted to open any of my Applework documents I had to open them one at a time and resave them with pages. This could take weeks.I have 1000s of apple work documents.
This was only the tip of the iceberg.
I needed to do some scanning for a client. Well, low and behold my Silverfast scanning software for my Microtek 9800XL would not work.
I went to the SilverFast web page looking for a download to fix this. No such luck. If I wanted to use my scanner with Lion, I would have to purchase a newer version for $450.00.
Then I went to the Microtek web page, nothing there. I called Microtek and they said they were working on the problem but couldn't tell me it would be available.
I called Apple customer support. The person I spoke with, Scott, was able to help me. The solution. I will get a refund doe Lion and for $16.00 they are going to send me Snow Leopard on a disk. Problem here is I have to reformat my drive. I have a full back up with Time MAchine, but he wasn't sure if I would lose some of my programs when this was done.
Am I dealing with Microsoft? This was a BIG surprise to me that Apple would release an OS without testing all programs.
Given my love of Apple products, I own a lot of Apple stock bought it when it was $45.00,This new OS is a real disaster.
If you are going to use Lion, I would be careful and call Apple first before downloading.
I also asked Scot what would happen if my computer crashed and I had no disk to reinstall. He said some Apple stores are selling Lion on a flash drive.
I believe this is one way for Apple to make ore profits at the cost of the consumer. Apple has more cash on hand then the US government.
I never expected Apple to do something like this. This is something Microsoft would do as they alwasy seem to rush their new OS without fully testing it.

If I wanted to open any of my Applework documents I had to open them one at a time and resave them with pages. This could take weeks.I have 1000s of apple work documents.
You don't have to open and re-save every AppleWorks document you have right now. Just wait till you need one, then do it. The documents aren't going anywhere.
Am I dealing with Microsoft? This was a BIG surprise to me that Apple would release an OS without testing all programs.
Frankly, it is not Apple's responsibility to ensure compatibiltiy with every piece of software available for OS X. That is the responsibility of the software vendor. Lion has been available to developers for several months before it's release, so Microtek had plenty of time to update their software. Yet they did not. How is that Apple's fault? I think Apple was very generous to give you a refund for Lion.
I'm not trying to belittle your frustration but I do think your ire is misplaced.

  • I have some expensive programs that work with windows, would they work with the Mac

I have always had windows and I have some expensive programs that I like to work with and was wondering if they would work on the IMac.  I have been considering changing for years but someone said my programs wouldn't work with Mac.  I have IPods, IPad and IPhones, so I am a little familiar with Apple

No, not unless you install Windows on the Mac.
A Windows app needs Windows. An OS X app needs OS X.
You can install and run Windows and Windows apps natively on an Intel Mac.

  • I was using AVG. I downloaded Firefox 4 and got the message that it's not compatible. Is there another free virus program that works well? Thanks!

my AVG is NOT compatible with Firefox 4....is there another free virus program that i can use?

Try updating AVG. According to their forums, they have updated the Linkscanner toolbar. You may need to do an uninstall/reinstall (see [http://forums.avg.com/mx-en/avg-free-forum?sec=thread&act=show&id=155295 Free Antivirus | Forum - Update For Firefox 4 Leaves Old "AVG Safe Search" Add-On]) .
    Does it work?
'''Edit:''' If you end up deciding to switch away from AVG, you can get opinions on free antivirus software on other forums, such as [http://windowssecrets.com/forums/ Windows Secrets]. Many users like Microsoft Security Essentials, others prefer Avast. You get the picture.

  • Are there any good fax programs that work with Efax besides Efax Messenger

I just signed up for a free months trial of Efax. I downloaded the Efax Messenger program which seems to work well except for the fact that it does not save any fax packages (on my computer) that I send out. This is an important needed feature. If I send out a package of 5 or 6 files to someone I need to be able to look up what I've sent them. The only way I can do this is to put all the files in a folder named for that particular fax, then put that folder in a second folder that is labeled faxes, then fax the files from the folder by Efax. Quite a process. I called Efax and was told that this feature was only available for a Windows Machine (Efax, catch up!)
Are there any other programs that are easy to use and at least as good as the Efax Messenger that have that feature?
We are traveling in a sailboat, don't have a land line. We only have a wifi internet connection when they are available, (internet cafes, etc.) or sometimes at anchor using long range wifi. I don't have the luxury of going online to check faxes all the time, hence the necessity of having them on the computer.
    Any help appreciated.
    Dan

Just to be clear, though, reducing the resolution of an LCD can have a negative effect on image quality. LCDs have an optimal "native" resolution and setting the resolution below that native level results in a poorer quality image.
Leopard claims "resolution independence" - I have not tried it yet, but if you read the description of this feature, you will note that it applies to the user interface elements. Granted, that's often what you notice the most (i.e. the problem with reducing the resolution below native for an LCD is that the text in Finder, all of the menu bar items, etc., looks "fuzzy"). By appropriately scaling the UI elements, Leopard overcomes the limitation. But the "fuzzyness" will still apply to non-UI things that are displayed - i.e. images. Since based on your posts you will be working with images primarily, high-res vs. standard is still a choice I'd recommend considering carefully, and ideally by trying them both side-by-side.
    Ps. Thanks for awarding points!

  • Looking for a Personal Finance, Money Management program that works smoothly with Mac OS 10.9.4

I’m looking for something to break down my spending into categories and merchants so I can track where I’m spending and better control it.   Checked out Quicken first, but looks like Intuit is giving up on Mac integration.  Can someone experienced in Mac and Financial Programs recommend one for personal finance and money management that works well with Mac?  OSX 10.9.4.  And, I’m an English major.  Numbers and spending are my Achilles wallet.

I like Quicken personally. There is a new version in the works.

  • EPub export issues and e-book programs that work with it

    Hey Ladies and Gents,
I'm working with my coworker on ePUBS for our company products but we're pretty much noobs when it comes to these. We've hit a few snags that I'm hoping someone on here might be able to clear up.
So far we've managed to export our white papers as fixed layout but when we open them up in adobe digital editions a lot of the text content seems to overlap like below:
We don't have that problem in reflowable layout but some of our anchored points and captions get misplaced (which is almost worse). Is there anyway to fix this issue in the settings with Fixed layout without having to switched over to reflowable?
We have them layed out for ipads and iphones. They include products photos/tables along with their descriptions. We primarily would love to have them up on iBooks and amazon for free for our clients to view.
Only thing is, we haven't found a good program to download/publish our ePUBS to the correct format they need.
Currently, Apple has seven approved iBookstore aggregators we've heard of that could work:
    • BiblioCore—www.bibliocore.com
    • BookBaby—www.bookbaby.com
    • Constellation—www.perseusdigital.com
    • INgrooves—www.ingrooves.com/digital-publishing
    • Ingram—www.ingramcontent.com/apple
    • Lulu—www.lulu.com/apple-ipad-publishing
    • Smashwords—www.smashwords.com/about/how_to_publish_ipad_ebooks
However, Lulu is expensive and doesn't bring in photos. we've seen a program that does that for $800
BUT we're hoping for a cheaper route; That's not exactly in our budget. We don't know much about the other ones. I'm hoping someone on here could give us some good insight on what would be the best choice for publishing our books onto ibooks and amazon.
    Thanks,
    Kristen

I don't know what was running in the background that was causing InDesign to crash when I ran the epub export but now that I've restarted the machine (Windows 7) and restarted InDesign CS 5.5 the epub export works fine.  Though I'm still noticing problems with both the TOC and Cover image being exported at the same time.  When that is done the TOC is not incorporated into the epub.  This isn't much of a concern at the moment since I can always use some freeware to add that in.  I'm also puzzled that I can't add the author information in bridge.  InDesign locks the epub up so that the author, title, etc can not be edited in bridge.  But once again I can always use freeware to do this.  Thanks for the help you two.

  • Seems like everyday I find another program that worked on SnowLeopard, but now doesn't work on Lion.  Can I easily downgrade back to Snow Leopard?

Since I installed Lion, I keep finding programs that won't run, but which ran fine on Snow Leopard.  (Apple even eliminated MacSolitare.) How can I downgrade back to Snow Leopard?  Do I have to erase my HD and start all over?
I have my stuff backed up on Time Machine and Carbonite.
But do those backups just contain files?  Will I have to also reinstall every application that I have been using?

    Dorsey Hudson wrote:

No they didn't, since it's not part of the OS.

    Yes.

If you have a pre-Lion backup, simply restore that backup.

  • Want to use old research program that worked through firefox chrome folder via modification of installed-chrome.txt file

there is a program (ESP, the Experience Sampling Program) that allows easy development and installation of research protocols via palm pilots. The program runs in mozilla-based browsers--Mozilla or Firefox. After the program is installed, it is accessed by hitting the URL chrome://espdesktop/content/desktop.xul. Previously, this required editing the file "installed-chrome.txt" file which was located into the chrome subfolder. The newest versions of firefox have done away with this subfolder. Not being a programmer, I am having trouble figuring out how to access the program now.

First thing I noticed is you are running on an outdated/older version of Firefox & not the current version. Download it from here:
    * At the top of the Firefox window click the Firefox button, go over to the Help menu and select About Firefox. For Windows XP: Go to the Help menu and select About Firefox.
    * The About Firefox window will open and Firefox will begin checking for updates. If updates are available, they will begin downloading automatically. If Firefox is already up to date, just close the About Firefox window.
    * When the updates are downloaded and ready to be installed, click Restart to Update. Firefox will be restarted and the updates will be installed.

  • Question: Programs that work with Nikon D600 .NEF files

I recently upgraded to the Nikon D600.  With that, I’m unable to open RAW images in the programs that I currently have (PS Elements 9).  Does Photoshop Elements 11 have the correct software (Camera Raw 7 and higher)?  Or will I need to get the full version Photoshop CS6?
Thanks for any help you can offer!

PSE11 will handle your NEF files but you will need to update immediately after installation using:
    Help >> Updates
Also look at Lightroom 5. Unlike Elements it has all of the raw tools from CS6 in an intuitive interface designed for photographers by photographers.
