Is magic mouse dead?

I have had my magic mouse stored unused for about 6 months.  I pulled it out and put in fresh batteries, turned it on and the green light indicator light comes on.  Then connected to the new mac mini with Lion installed.  I am able to connect to it with Bluetooth fine.  It left and right clicks but curser does not move and the infra- red light on the bottom does not illuminate.   My guess is that it's toast.  How can I be sure it is time to buy another one or can it be reset some how?

...infra- red light on the bottom does not illuminate.
Are you capable os seeing infrared?     You're thinking of what is referred to as "optical mice".  You won't see anything lit with infrared.
Try doing a smc and pram reset.

  • Is my Magic Mouse dead?

I noticed my Magic Mouse has been disconnecting, then reconnecting a lot lately. I thought it was loose batteries or dirty connectors, so I remedied that with some cleaning alcohol on the contacts. Everything seems OK, but now I noticed the green light on the bottom doesn't turn on when I slide the green switch on. I even tried other batteries. Same problem. I never dropped the mouse and took very good care of it over the last two years. It sounds like a power connection issue. Anyone have a solution?

I have had the same issue but with my Magic Trackpad today. I changed the batteries in a working trackpad and then nothing. No green light.
Batteries are fine. I'm certain the connections are OK to as I was using Duracell's before and I am now too. I even put in the old batteries as they were not completely dead and nothing
Will be booking a Genius Bar to get a replacement as it's still within warranty.

  • Magic Mouse Dead?

Just bought a magic mouse 30 days ago and it died with the batteries it came with today. Replaced the batteries with fresh ones but no green light. It remains off.
Ideas? Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks, Frank

I got this answer from someone else and it worked for me.  Please update us if it works for you.
"A posting within a discussion board that is located on a different site suggested that the interior end of the Magic Mouse's battery cavity can occassionally oxidize, which requires said ends to be carefully 'scraped clean.' I checked into that possibility and found no such oxidization. But there was a tiny bit of dust on both of the surfaces to which the top of the batteries make contact (not the pins, which the bottom of the batteries connect with). I cleaned that little bit of dust off with a cotton swab which had first been moistened with a disinfectant wipe, then reinserted the batteries and the cover plate, and then turned the mouse on. Violà! Everything works fine now!"

  • Magic mouse no clicky!  Is it Dead?

My magic mouse has stopped opeing up anything.  It still tracks, but does not highlight or open anything.  Clicking has died.  Changed batteries, cleaned the contacts.  Is it dead?  Do I have an IMac problem?

You have a mouse problem.  Try resetting the PRAM.  If that does not help, it is probably failing.

  • How to pair new Magic mouse w desktop? Old mouse is dead.

How do I get my new Magic Mouse to pair w my old 2007 iMac? I don't have the old Mouse; when I bought the new one at the Apple Store they said they'd throw the old one away. So I gave it to them.

Thank you so much Mr. Kafman... I turned off the computer by just holding down the power button and when it came back on it recognized the mouse. Thank heavens. I am SUCH a dinosaur.

  • Magic mouse scrolling function is dead

My magic mouse is about a year and 1/2 old - has always worked perfectly.  Last night the scrolling function just stopped working entirely.  The "right click" function seems to be a bit more sensitive, too. (When clicking where I always have for my "left click" I'm frequently triggering the right click function.)
Tried new batteries, tried re-syncing mouse, looked for updates......help....
Time for a new one?  Is there a possible fix for this?

    Hello:
You could try resetting the PRAM...but that probably will not help.  I have the same "click" problem, but, in my case, I think it is my fat fingers.

  • Is my Magic Mouse permanently dead?

I dug out my Magic Mouse after not using it for about 6 months, and I noticed the light on the back of the mouse wasn't on.  I put new batteries in it, but no light and no response.  I put another new set of batteries in it; no light, no response.  The little switch on the back is turned on (green).  I went to System Preferences but the iMac isn't seeing the mouse.
    Anything else I should try?
    Thank you.

    Hi!
Just happened the same thing to me. But it happened from one day to another. One day my magic mouse was working perfectly and then it simply lost it's connection to my iMac. I switched batteries 3 times and it still didn't work, no light, no response, anything...
Now, if I shut it down for like 1 hour, when I turn it on it connects with the iMac, but the connection it's on for no more than 5 minutes, then it dies again. I've tried everything I saw on the internet to fix this situation but nothing works, I set magic mouse as a bluetooth favorite, i reseted p-ram... still not working, so I'm asking the same question as you...
    Anything else I should try?
    Thank you

  • Ugly issue with my Magic Mouse

I have a Magic Mouse that has work essentially flawlessly for quite a while.
I run VMware Fusion so I can run Windows XP and the Magic Mouse worked great there as well. Tonight I was trying something and I told VMware Fusion to connect the Apple Bluetooth USB Host Controller to Windows XP. Well, at this point my Magic Mouse connectivity stopped and man did my troubles begin.
I quickly told Vmware to disconnect the USB Host Controller from Windows but this hasn't fixed my new issues with the Magic Mouse. At this point my Magic Mouse is barely functional.
    The symptoms are this:
    - If I disconnect the mouse using the tool bar blue tooth indicator and then reconnect it, the blue tooth indicator says the mouse is connected but it doesn't work. I have to physically power down the mouse and back on before it work.
    - When it does kinda work, the mouse at times "jumps" across the screen so I have to be very careful how quickly I move it at times.
    - The multi-touch scroll feature no longer works. It worked in Windows XP as well ... not any more.
    - When I click on the bluetooth icon and try to bring up the Mouse Properties it takes QUITE a long time.
When I try to get the system to "discover" the mouse again, it can take quite a long time and the following shows up in the Console App:

I want my Magic Mouse back !!!!
    Any idea anyone ?
P.S. I'm sssssoooo freak'n mad to VMware right now.

Sounds to me like you have one of several issues going on there.
You may have a lot of interference in the same frequency as your bluetooth device.
Or - you may have a bad bluetooth transceiver in either your mouse or your computer.
Take the mouse to another computer with bluetooth on it and sync it to that - if it works fine then your computer or your environment is the culprit there ( um this assumes that you took your mouse to another location, say your friends house where the interference threshold is bound to be different than at your house), and you should then take your computer out of the house for the day, and see how the mouse works away from home.
If the mouse is bad - you will have issues if you take it to another location - replace it - check warranty
If you think is is your house / place you have your computer, that may contain an the interference that messes with your mouse:
Try turning everything off you can think of in your house / office, and see if it gets better. Also - a big one - make sure that your computer and mouse are not to close to any speakers / etc, as they do have a magnetic field that could cause a mess with bluetooth mice. (rare but it happens)
As you can see in your error message:
    10/7/10 2:32:59 AM kernel 0f5f3900AppleMultitouchHIDEventDriver::start entered
10/7/10 2:33:02 AM kernel BNBMouseDevicewaitForDatad8-30-62-38-b8-ff Timeout waiting for data
10/7/10 2:33:02 AM kernel BNBMouseDevicegetExtendedReport getReport returned error e00002d6
it made a connection - then timed out -
Also check the silly things - like are the batteries dead?
Last thing I can think of - is to delete the mouse all together, then re-discover it -
Um - after replacing the batteries of coursse - just to be SURE.
Then you can turn everything back on in vmware etc - you may also want to make sure that you have the latest version and additions etc installed.
    Good luck!

  • How to Sleep an IMac using the Magic Mouse

I received a Magic Mouse as a Christmas present. It works really nice but I
must be doing something wrong as it is battery hog. It is just the middle
of January (less than a month of use) and the 2nd set of batteries are now
down to 40%. I noticed it starts getting a little flakey at 30% so I may have
to replace the 2nd set soon. Yes they were good when installed as it read
    100%.
I have not figured out how to Sleep the iMac and turn off the bluetooth
Magic Mouse. If I put the iMac to sleep with the Mouse, it wakes when I
slide the Magic Mouse power switch to OFF. I must be doing something
    wrong.
Again, I like the Magic Mouse but really likes it suck down batteries.

Same problem here. Batteries last about 10 days. Checked each with a digital multimeter. One battery was drained, the other was perfect.
I replaced the dead battery and marked the other one I left in. One week later, the new battery was dead. The marked battery was fine. The mouse is defective, it is only using the power on one side. Time for a return to the Apple Store. I hope it will be a quick swap.

Sorry to ressurect a semi-dead thread, but I'm having issues with this as well.  Using my bluetooth headset and bluetooth mouse causes pandora to speed up and slow down all the time (really weird sounding) and then intermittant drops.  I'm on a 2011 macbook pro with 16gb of ram and a 500gb ssd, 2.3ghz i7 etc etc.  I don't really think I'm doing something that outside of the box, i mean I get that there are limits to how much data can be pushed through bluetooth, but you'd think that would be within reach...  Can you prioritize the data such that the sound quality is never affected?  I'd rather my mouse be a bit jumpy than the sound be all funky...

  • Magic Mouse on Windows XP PC

    Hi,
I know this question has been asked before butI have still not found a solution that works for me. I have a Magic Mouse which I use on my Macbook but would also like to use on my work PC.
I know there were drivers available at UneasySilence but these links are now dead.
Does anyone know where I can find XP 32-bit drivers for the Magic Mouse?
    Any help is much appreciated.

I told, you, the Windows (PC) drivers for the Magic Mouse are included in the Windows software that is included on the Windows portion of your Mac OS install DVD. Just put the DVD in and run the boot camp installer, or if you so desire, browse the disc and run just the MSI file that is the drivers for the mouse.
There are two portions to Boot Camp. The Mac side which prepares your Mac OS for the second partition and prepares the emulation for a PC BIOS. The second part is the Windows portion which is simply a set of device drivers and support software for the Apple hardware. That second piece is what you are looking for to get your Magic Mouse drivers.

  • My magic mouse no longer controls the cursor. new batteries don't fix it. like it's died.

My magic mouse used with G5 has apparently died all of a sudden. Doesn't move the cursor.Fresh batteries don't fix.
Is it really dead? Can it be revived?

Try resetting the SMC and PRAM.  If that does not work, it is probably gone.

  • Magic mouse batteries drops fast, help!

is there anyway to solve this problem? in the mac store they told me that the batteries may last about 2 or 3 months aprox. but i think that's not true, put new ones and in less than a month they are dead.  i tried 4 brands and still the same thing.
    help please!

Depends completely on the quality of the batteries!  Did you notice that the magic mouse came with Energizer Lithium batteries in the box?  As an aside, the inclusion of high-quality batteries is typical Apple attention to detail that almost no other tech. company yet understands the importance of (no, I'm not an Apple employee -- just a fan of quality over quantity).
In my job I support hundreds of Mac and PC users with lots of different wireless mice (including several of my own).  I even have a new Apple Magic Mouse at home.  The simple answer is that if you use cheap batteries (Alkaline or rechargables), they will last only a few weeks.  In my personal experience most name-brand alkaline batteries last a month or more in bluetooth mice.  Quality lithium batteries however last much longer.  I just replaced (for the first time) the original batteries in my home Magic Mouse after about 2.5 months of 2-6 hours use per day!!!  And, I have yet to replace the batteries in my Apple bluetooth keyboard that came with the same iMac that the Magic Mouse was included with!
So, I'd recommend checking out something like Consumer Reports to find good info on cost/performance of name-brand batteries and go with their suggestions for best brand/model of battery for electronics use.

  • Magic Mouse loses scrolling ability after sleep

    Hi,
I'm on a Mac Pro and got a new Magic Mouse which I really love. First I experienced the BT connectivity problems which many people have on their Mac Pro's which I tried to solve via the tiny Belkin external BT dongle offered in the Apple store.
Now the cursor runs smoothly and I don't have any connectivity problems, BUT after waking the computer from sleep mode, the Magic Mouse lost the scrolling ability. It clicks properly, but I can't scroll.
Everything is fine after restarting the computer.
Searching the net, I found that other users using that dongle don't have the same problem, so what's wrong here? Any ideas? I'm thankful for every hint!

Just want to give an update to my saga.
I have made many calls tonight only to wait to no avail. My last call took 35 min to get thru. After explaining my issues and findings to him in detail, he asked me to do the typical first defense steps. Shut down, and then remove the AC cord. Press the power button 10 sec to "fully discharge any residual power". Then restart. I am all too aware that when Mac goes into sleep (very similar to MS PC's suspend stages) there are different degree of sleep. If I wake it up too soon, the symptoms do not occur. While on the call, we did the sleep and resume twice. Each time I waited about 2 minutes, thinking it is enough for the system to go into deep sleep. In both tries, the mouse did not loss the scroll functions. Thinking the issue may be resolve - though I did have some misgiving about it, I let him go.
I later went back and do a better testing, by let the system stay longer in sleep before waking it. I waited may be 4 to 5 minutes. Sure enough both the mouse and KB failed - both reverted to what seems some sort of basic mode. I have the BT status pane open and so I can monitor what it does. Yes, given enough time eventually the OS reports lost of mouse connection. Then also reports lost of KB connection. Yet, in actuality both the KB and magic mouse still works in their respective basic functions.
It appears that the host BT controller after entering what I infer as deep sleep, it is unable to reconfigure both the KB and mouse to their designed full functions upon resume from sleep. It however, able to reconfigure them for basic functions so the user is not left dead in the  water.
During my call, I ask the CSR what is the next step if the issues are not resolved. He mentioned deleting some sort of BT file somewhere.

  • Magic Mouse stops sliding vertically, only slides left and right...

    Hello,
I just bought a brand new MBP and decided to get the Magic Mouse to go with it. For the first week it worked really well. Now, besides the other issues everyone is discussing, I've noticed that periodically throughout the day, the mouse will not let me slide up or down. I can only slide left or right. Has anyone else experienced this? Any solutions?
Second, if the mouse (and computer) goes to sleep (after 5 minutes or so...) when I try to use it again, it seems to be dead. I have to go into control panel and reconnect the mouse to regain use. The green light on the bottom doesn't appear at all when this happens. Anyone else having this problem? Any solutions?
    Any thoughts welcome...
    Thanks.

Hi Civilian12 & welcome to the forums...
Try resetting some of the hardware involved (PRAM~NVRAM). See this Apple KB for details, etc.:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Can't hurt to try, and apparently this has helped others recently.
Failing that, take it to an Apple Store and ask staff there for assistance.
