Is Mail really "Learning" my junk mail?

I've read various forum threads about training Mail. I might not be doing it right, but I mark spam messages as Junk, and they go to the junk box. It seems I get repeats though, from the same sender, or same subject. Which tells me, it's not doing anything, or, i don't have it set up right. I get a ton of spam though, and it drives me nuts. I switched to Thunderbird on a PC for a couple months, and surprisingly, didn't get but one a day. I finally received my new Macintosh, and really want to use Mail, but all of these spams just drive me crazy.
Here's what I've done so far:
- We use Postini on our server. All levels are set as high as can go.
- I started creating "rules" for every single spam that came in, but I couldn't keep up. I must have 50 of them created, and I still get 30-50 spams a day.
- Now, I mark them all as "Junk" but it still doesn't deter any of these spams. Fortunately, some of the spam emails do go directly into Junk mail, but not as many as I wish did.
I see there are paid add-ons you can use for Mail. I find it hard to believe that there isn't a way using Mail, to at least cut down on all of these spams. If Thunderbird can do it for free, I'd bet there's a way to do it in Mac Mail.. I'm probably just not doing something right. Any ideas would help. Thanks!

Hi grannysmith.nc,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on exactly what you are seeing with regard to junk mail in Mail under Yosemite. I'm unclear if it is not marking junk mail at all, or if it is marking it but simply not moving it to the Junk mail folder. If it is the latter (not moving), it may be as simple as changing the settings as outlined in the following article under Change the junk mail filter:
Mail (Yosemite): Reduce junk mail in your inbox
If Mail isn't recognizing junk mail at all, you might find these articles more useful:
Mail (Yosemite): If junk mail filters aren’t working correctly

  • Junk mail not automatically moved to Junk folder

    Hello.
    I'm using an IMAP account and have configured Mail to move junk mail to the chosen junk mail folder (junk is not filtered on the server but on my client). Since the junk mail filter is still learning sometimes junk mail is not detected and still goes to the inbox. That's okay.
    If I then select that message it is somehow miraculously detected and marked as junk. However, it is not automatically moved to the junk folder but remains in the inbox marked as junk?
    Is this desired behaviour? Why is the mail not automatically moved to the junk folder, like it is when I manually mark a mail as junk?
    Thanks in advance

    I just happened to notice that even mail that is automatically marked as spam/junk remains in my inbox. So I open the inbox folder and there is message that is marked as junk. Only when I manually reset and set the junk status is the message moved to the junk folder.
    This seems to be the case in an IMAP acount where all folders (sent, drafts, spam, etc.) are subfolders of the actual inbox folder.
    Is anyone else experiencing this behaviour?
    Thanks in advance

  • Can I/should I use Mail on my MacBookPro or do I just use iCloud mail?  My Mail won't even open like it used to...Tool bar shows up top but nothing else on screen!

    Hi.  I've recently been given a pc tablet to enable me to always be connected to my boss since some of what we do is only pc compatible.  He's a big Outlook lover and intended to use Windows through Paralles to have all this on my Mac.
    After my Mac died and I had to buy a new one, I'm a little leary of doing so and thus investigated the Mail program again.  I am confused about it at this point and would love it if anyone could answer some questions i have.
    1.  If I have an icloud account which I currently use for my .me mail, can I even use Mail anymore?
    2.  My Mail program hasn't been the same since i upgraded to Lion - which is when I started my iCloud account.
       When I open the program all I see is the toolbar - no actual mail or screen even!
    3.  Can Mail be set up like Outlook in that I could have all of the email accounts I must manage for work (mostly gmail accounts) feeding into one location?
    Sorry if this all sounds silly!  I really never had a use for Mail when it worked, other than for my personal emailing so I'm afraid I never really learned enough about it!
    Thank you,
    Christine

    Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
    Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
    Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
    from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
    Quit and relaunch Mail, and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
    Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
    *If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
    from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Mail suddenly not exporting messages as PDFs

    I think this is related to recently upgrading to OS X 10.9.3, but lately Mail seems unable to export a mail message to PDF.  I just started using this feature a few weeks ago regularly and now I am unable to use it.  I am almost dependant on this feature now too.
    When I select Mail > File > Export to PDF it shows the box to enter the file name to save to, but when I do so, suddenly it pops me over to the Print dialog box.  When I select Cancel to cancel printing, it puts me back at the beginning with no exported file.

    I did not know that.  I've had Macs since 2005 though I've never really learned much about the opersating system enviroment itself. Such knowledge I'm sure would help me out if I took the time.
    Regarding all those things you suggested, haha, I was already just doing all that, likely while you were typing that out.  I tried a new folder in finder, tried moving the files to it.  I could move the files but would stilll get the print dialog box when trying to save to PDF.
    Okay, so here's another development.  I've tried adding another new folder and it also will not let me save as PDF, going to the Print Dialog box.
    The Path is  myusername > Documents > Business > Receipts > Meetup > filename.ext
    I've tried to add new folders to the Documents menu, so
    myusername > Documents > Testing out PDFs > filename.ext
    and it's not working for that one either.
    Just a reminder that I added the "Business" folder recently, like a few weeks ago.  I have a few receipts saved under Meetup already further along that path, but I'm unable to save new PDFs anywhere under the Business heading.  I also can't save them to Testing Out PDFs folder as I've said.  However I can save them to the Documents > root folder.
    I just checked and I am able to Export as PDF from Safari to the Business folder, so it looks like it's specifically an issue between Mail and that Documents folder and subfolders.
    Ooh, even more information.
    Okay I've tried saving to other subfolders under Documents, but when I do that I get the following error message:
    Could not save to path /Users/myusername/~/~/Documents/Family Info/Bridal Shoot 2014-06-15.txt. Choose a different path.
    The weird thing is that I wasn't even trying to save them into my Documents > Family Info subfolder, I was trying to save it into my Documents > Models subfolder.

  • Web Application Constants Javax.mail

    I have a small web application with a MySQL database. The application uses javax.mail and includes these statements:
    MyAuthenticator auth = new MyAuthenticator();
    Session session = Session.getInstance(props, auth);
    And MyAuthenticator returns this:
    return new PasswordAuthentication(emailaddress, password);
    To avoid hard-coding the emailaddress and password, I have stored them in a MYSQL table and MyAuthenticator queries the table when it is called. Looking back this seems inefficient and maybe off-track.
    How do I get constants into a web application efficiently? Can I somehow query the table at the start up of the application and have the constants available as long as the application is running? Is there a completely different approach that I should be thinking about?
    Thanks in advance for your help.

    That was quite a great idea. Here is what I managed to pieced together, for anyone who wants a solution.
    The new Authenticator:
    public class MyAuthenticator extends Authenticator {
        private String emailaddress;
        private String password;
        public PasswordAuthentication getPasswordAuthentication() {
            return new PasswordAuthentication(emailaddress, password);
        public String getEmailaddress() {
            return emailaddress;
        public void setEmailaddress(String emailaddress) {
            this.emailaddress = emailaddress;
        public String getPassword() {
            return password;
        public void setPassword(String password) {
            this.password = password;
    }Here is the Mailer in ContextBean:
      // Create a mail session
            java.util.Properties props = new java.util.Properties();
            props.put("mail.smtp.host", smtpHost);
            props.put("mail.smtp.auth", "true");
            MyAuthenticator auth = new MyAuthenticator();
            auth.setEmailaddress(emailaddress);
            auth.setPassword(password);
            Session session = Session.getInstance(props, auth);
            // Construct the message here
            Message msg = new MimeMessage(session);
            // recipient can respond using from
            // Send the message
            Transport.send(msg);I really learned a lot and appreciate the responses from everyone.

  • At&t/Yahoo mail changes coming 03/30/2007

    If you are an at&t/Yahoo dsl/dialup subscriber you need to be aware of a major change coming at the end of March. at&t/Yahoo mail will start using SSL for encryption of both incoming and outgoing mail. at&t/Yahoo is supposed to be emailing notices to subscribers about the change but it seems to be sporadic at best. I found out about it from the at&t forum at Broadband/DSL Reports. Here is a link to the procedures to change your email client settings...
    http://helpme.att.net/article.php?item=287
    I made the change a couple of weeks ago and Apple's Mail.app seems to work just fine using authenticated SSL. However, some people are reporting problems getting Entrourage to work. So, if you are a subscriber, take note and be ready.

    ikrupp--
    Thanx for the response, that clears up several things that have been bothering me. Together with your posts and those of Allen Sampson in another thread, I've really learned a lot these last two days. I still have much to learn though.
    Entourage is part of Microsoft Office for the Mac. It
    is Office's email client and is roughly equivalent to
    Outlook in Windows. Apple's Mail application is a
    different animal from Entourage. It is Apple's OS X
    email client. As I mentioned people were reporting
    that Entourage was having problems with the new
    authentication at&t/Yahoo is using. Apple's Mail app
    was working fine.
    Do not delete the Maill app. You don't really need to
    delete anything. Just get your accounts set up right.
    What problems are you experiencing with your email
    client?
    I have not deleted my mail.app but have made a duplicate copy in case I need to do something so drastic. I'm glad you have relieved me of that problem.
    I have been having trouble with my Mac mail.app for sometime. It often refuses to send mail although it is receiving from my mail accounts. A short time back something awful happened, it lost all my inbox mail for no apparent reason. Then some mail started filtering in. It was about the time I got an account with gmail (I think). I was working on other things and didn't pay too much attention.
    The problem now is that MSN, my ISP, is no longer POPing mail to my mail.app. At first I thought I'd done something wrong and went in and tried to correct whatever was wrong with accounts that had been working fine for some time. I'd grown to really love the mail.app setup and used it almost exclusively for my not very active email correspondence. I know now that there was nothing wrong with my information as yesterday, for the first time in weeks, the mail.app sent mail out under the name of gmail and today they refuse to do so. I have done nothing to the accounts in the interim so it has to be something in the system.
    I'm chronicling as best as I can remember what has happened and will return here for help from those of you who know how to fix things.
    Thanx so much for your help and I'll be back soon. ....gb

  • What's your strategy for learning Java technologies?

    Or, in other words, how do YOU acquire knowledge that is necessary for implementing Java technologies?
    After having spent one-and-a-half years developing an enterprise app, I've gained lots of knowledge about Java and some surface knowledge about its related technologies (JBoss, Hibernate, Ant, XDoclet, NetBeans and probably some others I can't think of at the moment).
    I'm now realizing that -- although the standalone prototype version of my program is growing mature -- I've still got lots to learn for refactoring it to a web platform. For example, I 've done small test projects using Servlets, but haven't done any work with JSP (or HTML for that matter) yet.
    Now, I'm sure I can learn JSP etc., but the questions I ask myself are: how long will it take?
    It's a rhetorical question of course (I don't expect an answer from you, the reader) However, it's an important issue because the months or years I spend fumbling around learning these new technologies, are time I could otherwise spend on the business logic and functionality of my program.
    So, how do you guys acquire knowledge of technologies? Official training perhaps? Or do you simply experiment until it works? Or do you rely on your company's knowledge base (e.g. someone in your company knows how it works)? Or do you get prototypes built from someone who already knows how it works?
    Im really curious about this and would appreciate your thoughts.
    Thanks in advance,
    P

    Well, it seems like most of you simply read the
    various texts and try the vendors' examples. I'm
    surprised that no one mentioned ever having bought a
    prototype application from the onset. "bought"? What's that mean? You don't buy prototypes. You download evaluation versions, maybe.
    I try to find sample code and tweak it to see the effects. Otherwise, I start writing small sample code an build on that.
    I consider myself a reasonably competent core Java
    programmer, but I had serious difficulty configuring
    and merging its related technologies. There were so
    many disjointed pieces of instructional information
    that the additional research time really hurt our
    budget severely. Not an uncommon thing, I'm sure. There's a lot of stuff. But don't bother learning all of it. Not in detail, at least. It's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the names of packages/libraries and what they do. But only really learn what you need to learn for what you need to do. The next project you will probably need other things, so you learn them then.
    bsampieri,
    I've setup Tomcat and tried the examples--in fact, I
    normally follow tutorials for all products I hope to
    use. Problem is, the examples and tutorials never
    address my specific needs. So, I usually inch toward
    my goal by spending weeks or months in forums to
    continue where the tutorials leave off. Anything complex is going to not be there.... the trick is to identify pieces that you can pull out to build more complex apps. And the fact that JSP/servlets have the issue of being compounded by all the HTML/CSS/JS and HTTP protocol ... I don't want to say limitiations, exactly... Well, it just makes things more complex and harder to know what you need.
    Perhaps you guys are much faster and smarter than
    I...or you have a much bigger budget :)Probably not... on either account.

  • Is the making of a calendar really simple?

    I have been reading this forum for a while and am beginning to think that one cannot simply drag and drop pix into a format and send off to Apple for a great calendar.
    All the talk of converting to tiff or raw, then color compatibility has me confused. Is there a place where one can REALLY learn how to do the calendars, books? I don't want to waste my money or time if the results are generally poor.
    Maybe I'm reading too much into this.
    Thanks everyone.
    Dave

    David:
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I've created a calendar each year for the last three years and it's really a drag and drop situation. There are some quirks that you can encounter and one is when clicking on a photo that's been inserted into a date box and you want to add a comment it ends up in the date box below the photo instead of on the photo as some would like.
    As for color, all of my photos were sRGB or some other variation other than the Adobe RGB color profile. I found that if a photo is imported into iPhoto and it has no color profile assigned iPhoto will assign the profile used for the monitor. Weird but that's what I found. The materials in the calendars are of top quality IMO.
    If you're shooting raw iPhoto creates a jpg version for viewing and editing when imported. It's that version that gets included into the pdf file that's created for uploading and printing.
    Before ordering do a print to pdf of the calendar to for proofing and check that all text appears as expected.
    Some issues have been encountered with books and the cover photos - some with the interior photos. I've had one hardcover and one softcover printed with iPhoto 7. The softcover was fine but the hardcover's dust jacket was dark. The interior photos were OK.
    Do you Twango?
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • [SOLVED] Vocabulary Trainer or Learning Archit. for the Command Line

    I am writing my PhD in English which actually is not my native language. So vocabulary and expression learning is an important task. When I came to Arch part of the decision was also ralted to my whish to work as close to the Command Line as possible. So I am looking everywhere to find a vocabulary trainer for the shell. Unfortunately I was not able to find even one. I looked:
    - at the Arch Wiki 'List of Applications'
    - at the Ubuntu Wiki 'Shell Applications'
    - at http://www.jaredandcoralee.com/CLIapps.html
    - searched both the Arch and Ubuntu Wiki
    - searched Google for 'Vocabulary Trainer cli', 'Vocabulary Tainer terminal emulator', 'Vocabulary Trainer Linux Shell'
    Is anyone aware of such an application for the shell or has anyone ideas for a kind of work around using a combination of existing software/shell scripts/shell commands.
    Thanky you.
    PS: Of cause I could just start something like simple Python Script working with a csv file or something comparabla. But if possible I would like to avoud this DIY solution.

    I don't know of any training tools of that variety.  Generally this is a "learn by doing" situation - which fits with language learning as well: flash cards can seem handy, but to really learn a language, you just need to start using it.
    To "just start using" the shell, I'd suggest greg's wiki
    Ok, I think there is a misunderstanding. My question does not relate to learn to use the shell. Although far from being perfect I already feel quite comfortable with the shell and its ways to interact with the system.
    It's really more basic. I have to improve my English. And in this context I need a vocabulary trainer, to learn english words and english academic expressions, nothing more. And as I am feeling quite close to the shel it would have been nice to train english vocabulary on the shell and not with something like KWordQuiz, etc.
    Sorry if my description was ambiguous. So the question still is, is there a vocabulary trainer for self defined english vocabulary to train in the shell?
    PS: Of cause also learning english is something you mostly do by learning. But I will do  that anyhow as I am writing the PhD in english and as I am presenting in English. Anyhow I experienced that there is a part in foreign language learning where there is no real subsitutde for learning it with a vocabulary trainer.

  • Where can I learn/how to use basic plug ins

    Hi,
    Plug ins -
    Which are the basic ones I should be aware of (there are many EQ's for instance)...
    I am a musician, but haven't spent any time really learning how to properly use the plug ins that come in Logic 8...
    Any websites, DVD's etc... where I can learn a bit about this???
    Thanks in advance.

    In all seriousness, the Logic 8 plug-in and instrument manual is very, very good. A New York Times Best Seller IMO.
    It'll cover some generic applications of plug-ins as well as synthesis techniques (vocoding and physical modeling for example).
    After that, whatever is unsolved (compression techniques as another example in parenthesis!) you can research on the web. wikirecording.com is a good site - up & coming, as they say in the music biz.

  • Learning Linux

    Arch claims to be a distro that doesn't do too much for the user and therefore makes you really learn linux (contrary to the Ubuntu way, for example).
    But how do you explain the following? According to the "Configuring Network" text on ArchWiki, all you have to do to configure your network is put some values in a few configuration files, type /etc/rc.d/network start and that's it. Where's ifconfig, route, ...? Are these put together in /etc/rc.d/network?
    (I'm not using Archlinux yet, otherwise I could just go and have a look)

    The Arch way is similar to the Slackware way. Services in Slackware are set up in the /etc/rc.d directory, and the recommended method of enabling them is to simply chmod the scripts, whereas Arch calls them from the DAMEONS line in /etc/rc.conf. This might seem strange, but it is actually inspired by the BSD way. It is a 'simple' way, which is consistent with the Arch principle. (See the Arch Way in the wiki )
    Many Linux distros use a  more complex system, but the 'BSD/Arch/Slack' way uses one simple file for each runlevel, not an entire directory.

I have seen people mention many different programs which they are using to keep their Mac in tip top shape. Where would be the best place for me to really learn and understand my Mac so that I can keep it working well?

    The most importing thing to remember before "tuning" your Mac is to remember to back it up.
    As for tuning it, I typically do very little tuning myself. I maxed out on RAM, made sure my hard drive doesn't get too full, and repair permissions with Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility before and after each update, and dismount and disconnect third party peripherals before updating. Leaving a Mac on overnight certainly helps on occasion, though you can use a freeware such as Macjanitor to run the same routines the Mac runs automatically on its own.
    Besides other utilities are there mainly to troubleshoot issues you may be having. But none can replace having a good backup. Some can supplement it by getting your Mac back in good shape without having to restore from your backup, eventually though restoring from the backup may be needed.
