Is Mail Still Slow

Hi,
I have just switched over to Mac from PC and have suffered a horrendous speed reduction when downloading or sending mail when using the Mail application that comes with Leopard. I am downloading at between 0 and 5 kb/s. It is not related to attachments as simple text mails download at the same speed. I do not know the speed of download with my old PC but it was not a noticeable problem.
I read on this forum that this seems to be a common problem with Leopard but some of the posts were quite old. Have Apple fixed the problem yet ?
If the problem is Leopard/Mail related would switching to another e-mail application solve the problem e.g Microsoft ?
Thanks

Just a data point.
I use Apple's Mail. I use it to get mail from 3 different, unrelated servers, and I use 2 different ISPs. I do not have the problems you describe.

  • Now that I saved everything to my LaCie external hard drive, do I need to erase my IMAC hard drive?  My computer is still slow. :(

My computer is still slow after uninstalling Macbook pro and buying a LaCie external hard drive and saving everything to it.  I repaired disk permissions.  Am I supposed to erase original hard drive?
    Thanks!

Not yet, get a second hard drive, or a second medium to backup your data.  You never want there to be less than two copies of your data at anytime.  If for some reason one fails, you'll always want a backup.  Clone with Superduper or Carbon Copy Cloner.  Note, if you have an early 2008 Mac, it is not PPC, but rather Intel.  PPC indicates the chip is G3, G4, or G5.    You can double check this by going to Apple menu and selecting About This Mac. Once you verified your Mac, I can ask a moderator to move this thread, so you don't have to crosspost.

  • MacBook slow after upgrading to mavericks--still slow after reverting with time machine

After upgrading to Mavericks OS my 2012 MacBook became slower than ever before. My MacBook was freezing and the beach ball kept appearing. This seemed to be something a lot of people were experiencing with Mavericks, so after other suggested didn't work, I decided to just revert to Mountain Lion using Time Machine. But my mac is still slow--I now avoid using it because it's such a huge hassle. I have 8 gb of RAM, 5.5 gb of which is free. ~98 % of the CPU is idle.  Have no idea how to get my computer back to how it used to be. Any suggestions?

Resetting SMC could solve the problem, if you didn't yet.

Or clean install of Mavericks could solve the problem.

Firefox 21 is really slow on startup, I have disabled all addons, checked memory, optimized win 7, ran system mechanic but it is still slow, changed home page . IE 8.9.10 is lightning fast on startup.

A tad faster but still slow compared to IE 8,9,10 where it starts instantly.

  • TS3276 Trouble with mail running slow

My mail is running very slowly and it looks as if I have more messages saved and coming in that I believe I actually have.  I also have a message that reads "connection logging enabled" at the top that seemed to appear about a month ago and I don't know what it means.  Any reason for mail running slow, mail messages duplicating multiple times and for trash not emptying as it should?

From the Mail menu bar, select

In the window that opens, uncheck the box marked

  • S/MIME certificate removed but Mail still encrypting messages

    Hi,
I'm using Mail to send S/MIME encrypted messages. I imported someone X.509 Certificate in my iPhone so that Mail uses it for encryption. Now I want to remove this certificate. I went to
Settings > General > Profiles > Configuration Profiles
and deleted the certificate from there.
Now if I open Mail and start composing an email to the contact, Mail still uses the certificate to encrypt which I do not want anymore. Where is Mail getting the certificate from ? How can I really remove it ?
    cheers

  • Mail Running SLOW!

Lately, Mail is slow slow slow. When I click on 'get mail', the wheel spins and spins. Eventually one of these things happens:
    -I get a message saying I'm 'offline'
-I get a message saying something can't connect to some sort of smtp server
-it spins forever and Ihave to restart the application
Also, when I try to send mail, often the mail find itself in the Outbox, where it sits and sits and sits, until it finally sends after several minutes.
I have a cable modem connected directly to the computer.
I never had these problems with Outlook.
    Any advice?

Do you have other mail accounts in addition to Gmail? Does the same problem happen with the other accounts as well?
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
In Mail, open Window > Activity Viewer. What do you see Mail doing there while it spins forever?
Do you have any Mail plug-ins or system utilities that could interfere with Mail? In the Finder, go to each of the following folders (if they exist). What do you see there?
    /Library/StartupItems/
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/
    /Library/LaunchAgents/
    /Library/InputManagers/
    /Library/Mail/Bundles/
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/
    ~/Library/InputManagers/
    ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/
To make accurately reporting this information easier, you may open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal, type the following command (you can just copy it here and paste it in Terminal), and press <Return>. You can then copy the output of that command from Terminal and paste it in your reply to this post:
    ls -1 /Library/StartupItems /Library/LaunchDaemons /Library/LaunchAgents /Library/InputManagers /Library/Mail/Bundles ~/Library/LaunchAgents ~/Library/InputManagers ~/Library/Mail/Bundles
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Mail is slow to load -- a fix?

I have a MacBook Pro running 10.8.4 and Mail 6.5, and lately (but not consistently) Mail is slow to display messages.  At the same time, one of three email account inboxes -- a Google mail account -- began disappearing and reappearing in no discernable pattern.  Neither problem occurs on my iPhone.
I have already tried Linc Davis' fixes using Go to Folder and Terminal, but to no avail (Thanks anyway, Linc!)
    Help, please!

I'm having the same type issue.  I'll hear Mail chime and there will be nothing new.
I even have rules to make the Dock icon bounce when I receive email from certain people... that will trigger, but no new messages.  Eventually they show up, sometimes hours later, but there was at least one Gmail message that Mail never delivered.  That really has me concerned and looking at alternatives.
All of this started for me after Apple's patch to fix Mail.

  • Apple Mail STILL does NOT sync with GMAIL...even with Mavericks 10.9.2...why?

Apple MAIL still does not sync well with Gmail.
I have to close Apple Mail program down, re-load it, select "synchonize all accounts." Then MAYBE it will finally sync up. If not, I do this again and again. Then, randonmly it seems, it finally syncs.
My iOS devices sync instantly and accurately 100% of the time. When I pull down the inbox to update, it does so almost at once. Accurately.
WHY does Mavericks APPLE MAIL have so many issues STILL!? Worked fine before Mavericks? Is there a solution?
    Mike

I'm not sure if you were seriously asking or just looking for a place to vent, but I've read a lot about this topic and so I'll give a brief reply.
Unfortunately, I've not seen a solution to this problem. Many people have had success with various "voodoo" solutions (re-starting or some variant) but there's really been no reliable, consistent answer to this problem. Most people seem to think that syncing was improved (but was not completely fixed) with the 10.9.2 update. The only "solution" I've seen is to move off of GMail.
As to WHY this is happening, well, again I've not seen anybody diagnose the problem in any scientific way, but the consensus seems to be that this problem started because Apple modified the way the Mail program stored and indexed a GMail account. Many people (including you) say "it worked fine before" and yes perhaps it did, but there was a big problem lurking.
As you might know, Google moved off the mail standard when they created their mail system. Now, this is a rant for another post, but IMO by doing that they should have provided code for 3rd-party mail clients to use their new mail system properly. But of course that would defeat any competitive advantage their own client had, so instead all they did was support an IMAP interface.
The problem is that when an email arrives at your GMail account, it is in your Inbox and also in the "All Mail" folder. This is not in concert with IMAP protocol where a message is only in one folder. So a naive IMAP email client downloads such a message twice. If a message happens to be in a several folders (tags in GMail-speak), an IMAP client downloads it several times. It might have looked like it was "working fine" to you, but for people who have many gigabytes of mail, this duplication is a big problem.
Likewise, if you search for an email, an unaware IMAP client will find it in multiple folders, and report back each copy. Anyway, you get the idea. Apple tried to improve their Mail client to support this, and unfortunately they have a big bug. Well, I say "big" because it really annoys me. Apparently it must be not be affecting a large percentage of Mavericks users or else they would have fixed it by now. Even more annoying, there's no "switch" to get Mail to act like a dumb IMAP client again. It appears to detect that it is talking to GMail and this new system kicks in automatically. (Perhaps this could be tricked by using some kind of proxy?)
So why is this not happening on iOS? Well, again, nobody knows for sure (and Apple isn't saying), but the theory is that they didn't implement this complex scheme on iOS (yet). Maybe they were first testing it out on Mavericks, or perhaps they didn't think it was worth the trouble because on iOS the Mail caches are typically much smaller. On a desktop machine, usually there is a copy of all your IMAP mail sitting on the disk. On a mobile device, only a few messages are kept around at any time.
Sorry I don't have more info to give at this time. Good luck.
    Bark.

  • Aperture Brushes still slow on maxed out imac i7  will it ever change

Why are brushes still slow  to No Go.   I have an imac 3.4 i7 with 32G ram and 2g video card but still brushes are a major issue and can't be used in any professional manner because of the time involved in waiting and waiting.
Does anyone know what's going on and if it will ever be addressed by apple?
    thanks

    skye27,
there must be a reason for the slowness in your setup.
As long as we do not know more about your versions, the location of the Aperture library, the location of any referenced files, the image file format of your original master images, it is hard to suggest anything.
Slowness can be caused ack of space on your drive, a corruption of your Aperture library, by network access, etc.
Check, if you are having the same problem when using a new Aperture library or working from a different user account.
This will narrow down the problem a bit for easier trouble shooting.

  • Mail *still* will not Hide at Login... Why!?

Apfle seems to ignore most of it's own rules:
After years and years, Apple Mail still will not Hide upon login when the Hide-Box is check in User Accounts startup items.
Is there a way to get it to hide, like other Apple applications?
And WHY does Apfle refuse to let us hide this app?
    Thanks

    Make an AppleScript like this:
    tell application "Mail"
      activate
      close front window
    end tell
then put it in your Startup Items instead of Mail.app
As to why this has never been fixed:
Apfle are too busy removing great features they created from OSX 1.0 to OSX 4.0

  • Re-installed Mail still crashes on launch

I am have re-installed Mail from my Leopard disk onto an Intel iMac of Tiger vintage. Having acquired an iPhone I want to switch from Entourage to Mail to sync effectively. I created mboxes and transferred all my unarchived mail from Entourage. Mail locked up on emails with attachments and I was unable to do anything even after re-starting. I have therefore binned Mail in frustration and re-installed but this is 3.0 from 10.5.0. I still have all my email folders [attachments and all] and accounts but Mail still crashes on launch. How do I resolve this, please? Any ideas? Also, how do I update Mail 3.0 to 10.5.7? I have downloaded the 10.5.7 Combo Update but can't see how to update just Mail and not everything else. It seems to be all or nothing. I note other questions refer to the combo Update but not how once you have downloaded. Any advice on this, please?

Hello and welcome to the Discussions.
The Combo can be installed over the existing OSX (here I am assuming you already have 10.5.7 installed) and it will then bring the version of Mail forward to match everything else. If there were any flaws in other parts of the OSX it would fix those, but otherwise would not change anything else.
However, did you ever run Mail while using Tiger on this Mac? If so, it would be best to remove some things, but what will be determined by your answers.

I couldn't find the edit button on my original post so I am posting an update here.
I have gone through more apps and have had good luck on all but one more.  And it's not that the app doesn't work, I am talking about the Yahoo Weather app, It works fine, but when you swipe between cities the screen lags a bit and it sometimes doesn't move between pages the way it should.  On iOS 7.1.2 it was smooth as butter but on iOS 8.0, not so much.  I will post a note in the app store to let them know.  I really like the Yahoo app better than the new stock app.
I have been going through my games and they all work fine. Angry Birds (Original and Stella), Canabalt, Minecraft, Bejeweled 2, Silly Walks, PopWords, Doodle Jump, Deep Green all seem to work just fine.
Starbucks app works as it should.
I will stop back again next week after I have had the weekend to play with it in detail and post my thoughts again.
