Is making a copy of a DVD as good quality as burning another original?

I am transfering old video tape onto DVD.  When finished, I will have a dozen different DVDs.  I want to give copies to my family for Christmas.  Burning the first 12 and then making copies seems to be the fastest way to do this.  But will I get a better product if I burn multiple originals from iDVD.
What I don't know is if iDVD is going to render and compress the project for each additional DVD - thus adding hours of production time.  Anyone have a suggestion?

Being digital there should be no quality loss from copy to copy.
The easiest, and quickest, way to burn multiple copies of a DVD is to save the DVD project as a disk image, and burn that in the required number. No rendering is involved.
Bear in mind that your Superdrive can get hot. Give it a rest, and yourself a coffee, after you have burnt 3 or 4 copies!

  • Karten:  Still trying to download movie to DVD in good quality

Recently recieved nice answer re my question of saving my new movie in right format so as to put on DVD in good quality (similar to that viewed when looking at project in my iMovie). Was told to store (save?) project in pre-installed 'Movie" folder-no export needed., and the, iDVD will 'detect' the project there, and offers it in 'media bin'..then judge pic quality on tv.
I am a fine artist, but the language of Comps/Mac I am just learning. when you say "pre existing movie folder" and "media bin" what do you mean. I saved project as a movie/doc etc but iDVD does not allow to retrieve. Also dragged in a pre existing folder in iMovie=but it would not allow me to open or save to disc. I hope I am clumsily doing something very wrong.
ty 4 any help. regards imamura. seattle

when you open the Finder you see on the left some 'icons', a house, a key (music), a frame (pictures)... and a clapper (=Movies)
any iM project in THIS movie folder is automatically detect by iDVD...
when you choose 'New Project' in iM - choose THIS as location for your project.
or, if you work with an ext. harddrive, after finishing your project, simply drag in Finder the project from ext. hdd to that 'Movies' folder..
it does NOT work, if you re-create a folder, and name it manually 'Movies'... the folders, which came delivered with your Mac from factory are slightly 'different' .. that's why I called them 'pre-installed' ... sorry, for confusing you...
be sure, you can differ a program from a file...
iMovie is a program, created by Apple, located in your applications folder
projects are 'files', created by you, located anywhere...
when you choose 'New Project', such a 'file' is created instantly (and, just to mention, is no 'doc', Word-files are '.doc') ...

  • My dvd's are not good quality when burned

I am exporting my projects by compressing them to quicktime and opening them in idvd. When I preview the movies they look good and have good quality, but after I burn them they are pixily or seem to look like videos when the tracking is messed up. I don't know how to fix this, are their special settings I need to fix before exporting??? Please help....thanx!

If you export to QuickTime Movie and UNcheck the "Make Movie Self-Contained" option, what you get is a very small QT file called a QT Reference Movie. (All it really contains are pointers to your FCE Project File + your source media files.) As long as FCE and iDVD (or DVD Studio Pro) are on the same computer, that's all you need. It's a real time & space saver.
If you make a Self Contained movie, on the other hand, you get a large file (approx. 13GB per hour of movie) that takes much longer to create. A real time & space hog, if you will.
You should not use FCE > Export > Using QT Compression if you are going to iDVD or DVD StudioPro to create a playable DVD.

  • Making a copy of a dvd

I created a dvd of some analog home videos using IMovie and IDVD.  I would now like to make extra copies of the dvd I have made.  I followed the steps outlined in Disk Utility Help.  After I created the the disk image I ejected the original DVD, selected the disk image, then Burn, then inserted a blank DVD. However, after burning, DVD player cannot play the disk.  The error message I get is SUPPORTED DISK NOT AVAILABLE.  I've repeated this process three times and now have three unplayable DVDs.   What am I doing wrong?  I am using MAC OS 10.5.8 on my Imac.

Sometimes the drives are sensitive to the certain brands of DVDs. Exactly what DVD's are you using? I've found the easiest (it's time consuming though) method is to create a folder on the desktop then copy the original DVD's files and pasting them into the folder. After all are copied select all the files and folders (Command A) the right click and select Burn. I've also found it's best to have a bland DVD already in the drive when I select Burn.

  • Making copy of a DVD that has no VIDEO_TS folder

A friend of mine made me a DVD on a home DVD video recorder. The DVD plays fine. However, when I mount it and take a look inside, there is no VIDEO_TS folder. There is not anything at all! I want to extract part of the DVD but don't know where to begin without a VIDEO_TS folder to view the VOB files. None of my usual backup or VOB extraction apps seem to work. ANy suggestions?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Mitch

If it is a video DVD then those files MUST be there!
You need to convert the VOB files back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • Copy of Install DVD Question

So I've read the topic about making a copy of the Family Pack DVD for other people that went in on it with you, and I understand it. However, I'm wondering that if I make a copy and there are still 3 installs left, could they, unbeknownst to me, give it to somebody else have it work for them or would it only work once?

Assuming you are not kidding about a copy of a DVD somehow knowing it has been used once and then refusing to be a DVD any more, there is a risk they'd copy the copy and share it so if you have family members like that don't copy it at all.
Note if the others that went in on it are not immediate family you cannot use the family license at all.

  • How do I prevent copying of my DVD?

I'm making a teaching DVD... using my lecture Keynote presentation. I don't want copies all over the place. How can I prevent that?

    Hi
The easy - and Sorry to say only answer is - One Can't do that.
The most common solution is to put a loggo that stays on top of the full movie.
eg. Copyrighted to . Or made by etc. Or not to be Copied.
Not even if You buy FinalCut Studio and get DVD-Studio Pro. You will not get this.
The Copy-protection in DVD-Studio Pro is just a flag set to alert DVD-producers
to make this in DVD-burning Companies.
There is such protections to Commercial materials and to astronomical costs.
And one can figure to what need, when there are no really secure Copy-protection.
One can only plead to respect the Copyrights

  • I have files in my iTunes media folder that somehow are not in my library. How do I get iTunes to scan my media folder and add missing files to my library without making a copy of each file in the same location?

I have files in my iTunes media folder that somehow are not in my library. How do I get iTunes to scan my media folder and add missing files to my library without making a copy of each file in the same location? If I use add file / folder to library, it scans the folder and then makes a copy of any file that is not in my library in the exact same location; I recal in older versions of iTunes being able to just drag my media folder into my library and it would update missing links.

Only the songs that are connected to iTunes will be copied when you consolidate to a new folder.
Splitting the media folder away from the usual location makes it harder to move iTunes in the future.
Are you go move everything back once you've tidied up or are you going to leave it that way? Either way I'd recommend you create an iTunes folder at the new location, an iTunes Media folder inside that, and consolidate to this new iTunes Media folder. You should also use the option File > LIbrary > Organize Library > Rearrange files in the folder "<Media Folder"> if you have not already done so.

  • MBPro won't read SL DVD - can I copy the install DVD on a PC?

My MacBook Pro won't read the SL install DVD (as others have had problems with). I have access to a PC with DVD to DVD copy ability. My question is, can I burn a copy of the install DVD to another DVD and use that copy (assuming my MB will be able to read the copy DVD)? Is this possible? Any tips on how would be much appreciated - a shame to buy the install DVD and unable to use it. Buying an external DVD drive doesn't make sense, as I plan on upgrading my MB with the year. Thanks!

My question is, can I burn a copy of the install DVD to another DVD and use that copy (assuming my MB will be able to read the copy DVD)?
I'm not sure why you think that would work. Either the disk is damaged, in which case you won't be able to magically create a good copy, or your drive is damaged, in which case it's not going to read a copy any better than the original.
Is this a new disk, or have you used it before? Is it readable in other machines? Can your Mac read other disks?

After using video capture device to copy VHS to DVD, burnt DVD will play on computer but not on DVD player. Tech support for the VCD said my HP DVD burning software has to burn "DVD Video and not DVD data" and to check with HP. How can i check myself.

    Grahamster, welcome to the forum.
I recommend trying CDBurnerXP for burning video CD's.  I have been using it for years without a glitch.  I use it mainly for burning ISO's, but have used it for all types.  Please let us know if it works or not.

  • Copy photos from DVD to Mac?

I would like to copy photos from DVD to Mac computer anyone know how to do it.

If the DVD was made on a Mac and they're JPEGs they should openable in Preview from the DVD. If so, just select them and drag them into a new folder to copy onto your hard drive. If the Mac doesn't recognize the DVD and it doesn't mount in the finder window or on the desktop, I'd say you're out of luck. But there are work arounds possible and too many to discuss without knowing a lot more about your setup and the DVD.

  • Why are the photos I copied onto a DVD from I-Photo not viewable by a Windows PC?

Why are the photos I copied onto a DVD from iPhoto not viewable on a Windows PC?

Because you did it wrong? It's hard to know unless you tell us what you did.
    What should work:
Select the photos you want to share
File -> Export and export them to a folder on the desktop. Burn that to the disk with the Finder.

  • Why is the LaCie copy silent on DVD player?

    Friends,
After several frustrating hours (LaCie's readme only tells me how to connect to LaCie's readme--it should say, "if you are reading this don't bother to read this.") I finally burned a DVD. It was made from a videocam film that we had copied to a DVD. The sound was very bad, but as it was a souvenir film we want the sound.
On my computer, all works well but when played it on the television the video plays but it is silent. Did I miss something in the Burning Process?
I was so proud, but now I'm lost again.
    Patricia

Is the DVD player built into the TV? or is it an
external DVD video player? or are you using your iMac
to send the video to the TV?
Thanks, Dwayne--you pointed me away from the iMac and LaCie and I found that the DVD player was not properly connected to the TV.

  • Re: Satellite C660D-102 - How to copy Windows on DVD?

Hello people. I have bought a new Toshiba Satellite C660D-102.
The seller told me to copy Windows on DVDs soon to open the laptop. Do not know where to take the Windows installation files. You've encountered this problem? How can I fix this problem.

    Hey,
I think the seller did mean creating the Toshiba recovery disk that contains an image of factory settings. In case you cant start Windows anymore or the HDD must be replaced you can use this disk to restore Windows with all drivers and tools. With other words you get factory settings back, the same settings as you purchased the notebook so its very useful and easy.
You can create this disk if you start Toshiba recovery media creator that is preinstalled on your computer. Depending on the installation you need some blank DVD mediums. I would recommend high quality mediums, Typ: DVD-R from Verbatim or TDK. They work good and other users here can recommend them too.
Last but not least you should also read your user manual. It contains interesting information about this and other interesting things. Its also preinstalled on your notebook. :)
But its really great the seller gave you a hint about this. If you check other forum threads you will read about lot of other users they forget to create this disk and are not able to restore factory settings if Windows failed to start.

  • Check this out: making a copy of an array of objects

I have an array of objects called Figs of type Figure and I am making a copy of this array called OriginalFigs so later when Figs change, I can use the original values stored in OriginalFigs.
But I found out that when values in Figs change, values in OriginalFigs also change.
I tried to store values in Vector too but even in Vector values are changing.
seems like they both are storing reference to Figs and when Figs change , they(Vector and OriginalFigs) chnage too.
Is there any way to come around this problem?
if u know then plz share with me..........

    Hi,
how do you copy them - if you use the method from Object(? was it there, never use this), you will get a shallow copy - that is a new object with the same references in it - not a new object with new objects of the figures in it.
How about providing a methode in your figure-objects which can do a total copy? - This must be easy as so you know how to construct such an object efficiently.
Another way to hold a copy is to write the figures out to a stream temporarily - all objects are serializable and so they can be stored to a stream - but your figures should not have references to other parts of the program in it, because the serialisation-process tries to serialize all references the object has, that is to be serialized. If there is for exampe a link to the main JFrame in it, the serialisation process tries to store your hole program to the stream and this may be impossible - I hat this with parts of a JTree that refuse to be stored to a stream.
    Hope, this will help
    greetings Marsian
