Is Mavericks Working On Brand New Macs?

I've read a great deal of discussion of problems some users are having with Mavericks.   I'm wondering if these problems are limited to those upgrading an older version of OSX, or if those purchasing new Macs are experiencing the same issues.
I had problems with Mavericks too, but I'm on a five year old machine with only 2gigs of RAM, so that may be the explanation.   This isn't a problem for me, but if I experienced the same problems on a brand new machine it would be.
Is anybody having Mavericks problems on a new machine?
Thanks.

Hi again R C-R, thanks for the followup.
Have you noticed that no one in this thread except me has suggested that the problems many users are experiencing with Mavericks might be the fault of those who wrote, released and labeled the software as ready for general public users?  This is the Apple community culture I'm pointing to.
It's my thesis that this "Apple can do no wrong" culture is a large part of the reason why when a typical general public Mac user installs a new OS she really has no way of knowing whether the new OS will enhance her computing life, or turn it in to a nightmare.
I'm not on the warpath against Apple.  I am however attempting to address this problem at it's source which is  Apple, and you and me, regular Mac users, and our relationship with Apple and it's quality control procedures.  If we're willing to rationalize mediocrity again and again for years, mediocrity is what we'll all get.   That's not good for us, or for Apple either.
Please note that you have largely ignored my suggested solution, probably because to address it would require an admission that it is Apple, and not it's users or third party developers, who is the core problem here.
Eventually, perhaps in version 9.8, most of the problems with Mavericks will be ironed out, just as has been the case in most previous versions of OSX.
What's so wrong about labeling a new OS as beta until that level of maturity arrives?  It can still be released, but honestly labeling it as beta would alert all Mac users to the fact that the new OS is probably going to cause a lot of problems for a lot of people.
The solution can be as simple as Apple publicly advising inexperienced users to not upgrade to Mavericks until a later version such as 9.8.  More experienced users can be invited to test Mavericks on test drives, and file bug reports as necessary.
See? Such honesty and good communication costs Apple nothing.  Such honesty and good communication does not prevent anyone from trying Mavericks if they wish to.  All the problems you listed are easily overcome, if there's a will to overcome them.  The problem is, there is no will.
The problem is that a zillion inexperienced Mac users all over the world have been upgrading to Mavericks upon Apple's advice, having a horrible time, and losing their faith in Apple bit by bit as a result.
PS:  It might be helpful for you to know that when I came to the forum I posted a question hoping someone could educate me as to why Apple releases software the way it does.  I'm a programmer myself with 20 years of experience working online, but I don't know everything, so maybe there are factors involved that could be explained to all of us, so we'd understand why it's necessary for so many Mac users to suffer.  My posts was VERY polite,  a sincere request for education, and not a complaint.
That post was deleted in less than 2 minutes.
Wouldn't it be smarter for Apple to address these questions?
Wouldn't it be smarter for them to explain why beta software can't just be labeled beta software?
Thanks again!

Is it possible to "clean Install" mountain lion over mavericks on a brand new mac mini

Actually evrything I can find states that the last mini to run SL was 2010.
It appears that the 2012 mini's shipped with Mountain Lion and later Mavericks. Link
Also why would the OP need a bootable SL installation media when they want to install ML?

  • Spotlight is not working on brand new Mac mini

    Hi,
I got an issue with two brand new Mac minis running 10.7.3 (11D50d):
Spotlight is not working. I'm only getting the Wikipedia-Search.
    Here's what I did:
    Installation:
    - took the stock Minis and set up two users, admin and user (limited account)
    - updatet the System
    - installed manually: Adobe Reader X, Office 2011, Firefox 12, Flip4Mac, Perian, Cyberduck, Google Earth 6.2 (the installer without the updater), VLC 2
    - installed using AppStore: CalendarBar, TextWrangler, Unarchiever
    - copied a few documents (Word and Excel files) from a PC to the Desktop
    Troubleshooting:
    - tried to restart Spotlight by adding the entire harddrive to privacy using »Spotlight« within the System Preferences
    - that threw an error "no priviliges"
    - started the System from the recovery system (on an USB-thumbdrive) and repaired permissions
    - that did not help
    - tried to restart Spotlight through the Terminal, running the command: sudo mdutil -E /
    - that command returned: No index.
    - the tried: sudo mdutil -i on /
    - returned: Error: unable to perform operation.  (-400) No index.
    - went the hard way
    - unloaded the daemon: sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
    - erased the Spotlight folder: sudo rm -fr .Spotlight-V100/
    - loaded the daemon: sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
That made everything work fine until I did a restart of the System. After the mini restarted I was back at square one...
Does anyone have an idea how to fix this issue?
Apple support suggested to reinstall the system. Something I can't do right now, as people need to work on those computers and cannot take a tow hour break...

    Hi Ray Land,
We can help narrow down the cause.  What operating system are you using on your new Mac Mini?
If you are running the Mountain Lion OS, you can download the latest driver here.  An important note is that the current print queue must be deleted before installing the new driver.  This will ensure proper communication.
If this doesn't work or you need further assistance, please contact us here.

  • Brand new superdrive not working w brand new Mac Book Air

Hi, just came home from Apple Store today with new computer and superdrive, which is not showing up when plugged in. When I put a CD in it reads it for a few seconds then spits it out. I am on the road so getting to an Apple Store will not be easy for the  next week. Wondering if anyone has any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

A number of users have had this issue because the superdrive was upside down.  They were basically putting the CD in "upside down".   Silver side up.
I Apologize in advance, just thought I'd throw it out there...

I bought a brand new Mac 27" desktop that came loaded with Adobe CS6. Everything worked like a charm until the hard drive, 1Tb, developed a bad sector and the Apple Store reinstalled a new one as I had extended warranty with them. They recycled the drive immediately (like a fool I didn't ask for it back to get the data off it.) But luckily I have all my data on CrashPlan. I downloaded it and it worked great except I downloaded it to the desktop and not the original location so it got squirrely. I also have an external 1.5Tb drive that I wanted to make bootable so I installed Mavericks 10.9.3 . I then went ahead and installed it on the newly installed drive too.
I think that because I have a new drive Adobe thinks I have a news computer. I bought the 27" Mac brand new from Ebay and it came loaded with software, including CS6. I have a serial number for CS6 but Adobe said it wasn't valid. (I have owned CS2, CS4 and now CS6 which came preloaded onto the Mac by the seller who told me that the software was registered to the Mac???
I am going to re-download the backup but this time to the original location (I still don't think it will work with Adobe. What can I do about this?

Normally, you just connect the monitor to the MacBook using a VGA adaptor that you can buy from an Apple Store.  Now try System Preferences > Displays > Detect Displays.  You should now be able to select a display mode for the monitor.  If it still doesn't work, then I'd check that everything is properly connected.  I've had problems with colours disappearing due to a faulty connection in the VGA adaptor.

  • How do I know if my brand new Mac mini (late 2012) really has Mac OS X 10.9 Maverick preinstalled?

How do I know if my brand new Mac mini (late 2012) really has Mac OS X 10.9 Maverick preinstalled, as stated when I bought it, without opening the box and booting the device? It says "Copyright 2012 Apple Inc." on one of the sides of the box, which makes me uncertain.
If it does not have Mac OS X 10.9 Maverick preinstalled I might have bought an old device, in worst case as old as a year or more.

The late 2012 does have USB 3 !!
I specifically waited to purchase a Mac Mini
until USB 3 was made available.
Look at the diagram (picture) on the bottom of the box.  The diagram that details which ports are available on the unit.
If you see 3 after USB.. then it is a late 2012 Mac Mini.
Looking at my box it clearly says USB 3.
I don't think there has been any changes to the Mac Mini since late 2012.
other than the pre-installed OS being Mavericks now..
    You will want USB 3!!!
My box also indicates it is version 2.6 (just above the Airport ID).
(Mine is definitely a late 2012 model).

You need to have iPhoto 11 v9.6 (which you can get from the App Store) to use iPhoto on Yosemite. If you already have iPhoto 11 then the update is free. Otherwise it's a purchase.

  • HT5945 java wont install on a brand new mac.

This is a brand new mac and there do not appear to be any previous versions of java installed. When I download Java 7 from oracle
    as per the instructions here:
    http://www.java.com/en/download/help/mac_install.xml
    downloaded from here:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/java-archive-downloads-j avase7-521261.html#jdk-7u45-oth-JPR
No joy. it just stops working on the install step. (no errors, it just doesn't respond).
I've tried installing this which also doesn't work (exact same result - does not respond on the install step):
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572
on all the other support tickets regarding problems installing java, the above two resources were repeatedly referred to, but they do not work for a new mac with mavericks installed and no previous version of java.
    Please help.

    mdmfolsom,
the 7u45 version of Java is not the latest version. At this writing, 7u51 is the latest version. To download the 7u51 Java Runtime Environment (“JRE”), go here. To download the 7u51 Java Development Kit (“JDK”), go here.

  • Who has a brand new Mac with Lion?

I've been reading about all these issues with Lion. (yes i realize most people who are happy don't post) Most of the time when someone has an issue someone else says that their system must have been screwed up prior to the upgrade or they did something wrong, or have software that causing the issue, etc. I'm wondering if any of you are having issues with Lion on a brand new Mac? A new computer that came with Lion or at least a brand new computer that you installed Lion on as soon as you took it out of the box. Something NEVER used without Lion.
Seems to me that if the vast majority of brand new Macs that come with Lion installed are working great then the problems people are seeing may in fact be something that already existed in their system prior to the upgrade. But if people with brand new virgin Macs are having issues with Lion then it HAS to be system bugs.
I think this information could be a good indicator if the OS has a ton of bugs or if it simply does not get along well with possible existing bugs your computer may already have.
I have two 2009 Macs and I'd love to upgrade to Lion because i like to keep my systems current but honestly I'm afraid too!!

I bought my iMac (mid 2011 model) in July (brand new) and have Lion 7.1 installed. I have found many things which I would class as being "a different way of doing things from what I am used to", through "oddities (some annoying)", and a few that are clearly bugs, such as the Magic Mouse pointer going AWOL for about 45 secs. once per day, very short mouse battery life (eg., a few days), Mail not showing the addressee when doing a word search. But I have not had any killer problems like many of the other posters such as Wifi not working. I just grit my teeth and hope that Apple will soon get things straight.
Someone said that Lion should have been classed as a beta release and I think there is some truth in that. However, it is important to realise that the people who post here are the ones with problems, not satisfied customers. How many Lions have been sold? A million?
I was put off initially when I got my iMac and was glad that at that time it came with Snowleopard, but I took the plunge and am glad that I did. I like many of the features in Lion.

There are known technical issues with any older version on Yosemite, even CS6. Some can be worked out, others may not be relevant to you, some will remain unsolved.

  • No video on brand new mac mini

I am trying to get a brand new mac mini going for the first time, and although it switches on, there is no video on the attached VGA display.
I have connected the same display to my Ibook VGA adapter and it works perfectly, so it is not the display. I have also tried another display which also works on the I book. What else can I do other that take it into a mac store as I am a very long way from one?

Here is an assortment of Apple technical articles dealing with this sort of thing. Good luck.

  • Premiere Pro CC crashing on brand new Mac Pro (late 2013)

Such a big disappointment, yesterday our brand new Mac Pro (Late 2013) with OS X version 10.10.2 was installed and Premiere Pro CC is constantly crashing. One of the problems is that when I open a brand new project and before I add any content to a new sequence I just want to position the video track higher so I can see more audio tracks, the program crashed. I did it several times (new projects, new sequences) every time the same crashing program.
Deinstalled Premiere Pro and reinstalled it again, but no luck.
Tomorrow I created a whole new account with administrator rights on the Mac, the issue as described above was gone but at some point in time the program crashed again, and when I reopen the project, with two sequences open (one with footage and one empty) and I want to close the empty one, Premiere is crashing again. So I can't continue my work on this project and need to start over again....
This is the error report that I'm getting....
I hope somebody can help me on this because it's very frustrating...
    Thanks in advance
