Is MBP Fans always on?

well, I have notice while the room is empty and quit that the MBP Fans working so I got curious
I closed every application and Fans still working...
I restarted the OS and no application is running, still Fans working at 1999-2000 rpm
is that normal the Fans always working in no matter what condition the MBP is in?

The fans are on continuously to cool the Intel microprocessor and other components. If they weren't always "on", your machine would burn up by the heat created from the Intel chip. There are thermal detectors in your machine monitoring the components and controlling the speed of the fans. Therefore, on a hot day you'll probably notice the fan noise more; and on a cool day, less so.

  • Closed lid, fans always running

Howdy. I've been using my MBP in closed lid mode attached to a Cinema Display. I expected the fans to run constantly when in use, especially with XP running in Parallels. When I put the computer to sleep--still attached to monitor, usb keyboard, bluetooth mouse and power adapter--it acts as I suspect it would, fans stop, front LED starts fading in and out. However, I'll come back later and the LED will be solid, display blank, and the fans running away. The keyboard or mouse will wake the computer and then it runs as normal. This has happened overnight as well as in half an hour, and several times.
I am kind of getting concerned about using the computer this way. Fans always fail, and I am not really looking forward to opening the computer up again.
I guess my questions are: why would the computer be running the fans, especially after being in sleep for hours, and is it shortening my MBPs expected life using it with the lid closed?
    Thanks.

I'd guess/assume that something is actually waking it from sleep and causing the heat/fan activity and that when you return you're not actually waking it up just re-activating it from screensaver mode ...
Run Utilities/Console and click 'All Messages' top left - what lines appear during the time you think it should be sleeping ?
It isn't shortening the life of the hardware using it in clamshell mode but if something is causing it to overheat regularly that will have an impact on internal components/motherboard that could be detrimental.

  • My Macbook Pro fans always on

    Hi to everyone,
I just noticed some days ago that on my brand new MacBook Pro (5-6 months older) 2.3 ghz I7 with 10.8.5, the right and left fans are always on.
From what I can remember, in this months I never noticed something like this, I mean fans always on, especially when the mac wasn't run any application.
I don't use to install craps on the macs, I always used this philosophy, even if the Mac is less "fancy" and I always got great result, my Powerbook G4 1.67 ghz with 10.5.8 still working great!
I usually use it mainly for music production and daily net-mail works. I have for the 80% of the time the Mac connected with a NEC EX231W external display by thunderbolt, a Motu 4Pre, by the fw800, a WD usb3 hd on a usb port and a 4usb hub on the other port.
From what I can remember in the past months I neved had the fan always on, for most of the time they were really off and from the first moment I always use the set I metioned above.
So now I'm starting to be worry about, because I noticed that even when the mac is working with the battery, with no devices connected, running really few applications, not particualry heavy, the fans are always at 1998/2000 rpm.
Thanks to everyone can help me to fix this problem.

As we've repeatedly mentioned, the fans are designed to run all the time, in a 2000-6000 RPM range. If at any time speed falls to zero, "Houston, we have a problem" time has arrived. The heat load from the CPU (and GPU, if so equipped) would quickly reach the danger zone.
Why would you get a zero RPM reading? As usual, it is either a software or a hardware problem. Software: whatever it is you're using for the readout ain't getting it right OR there's a major "kunfuzzion" in there. Hardware: speed sensor(s) damaged OR fan(s) blocked and really not running. Either way, the issue needs to be addressed pronto, cause if "no fan(s)" is really  and truly NO FAN(S), Mac's gonna be kaput in no time.
Note that I say fan(s) cause we've yet to confirm if yours is a 15" unit. Those and the ancient 17" come with two fans. The 13" units have a single one.

  • Fan always working, trying to find out why

Hello everybody. My MacBook Pro has been recently behaving strange in regards to its fan. It is always working, often on really high speed. The monitor doesn't really show any extreme process CPU activity except kernel_task from time to time or safari "Web-Inhalt" (not sure what this is in English). Here is my recent EtreCheck. Maybe someone could take a fast look at this for any culprits that might trigger the fan. Thanks a bunch!

  • Fan always running on my HP Pavilion All-in-One 200-5000 (model #2MD0400F1W)

The fan on my HP Pavilion All-in-One 200-5000 (model #2MD0400F1W) seems to be always running (and it's not quiet). I believe I'm running the latest BIOS and I've already checked to make sure the air vents are clear. I'm not running any memory or processor intensive applications. Any suggestions how to reduce how long and frequently the fan seems to be running? Thanks.

    Hello @jmgoldsmith,
I understand that you are having issues with the fan always running on your HP Pavilion All-In-One 200-5000 Desktop PC. I would be happy to assist you, but first I would encourage you to post your product number for your computer the number you provided is not a product number (example : HP Pavilion All-In-One 200-5000t CTO Desktop PC has a product number of BN997AV). I am linking an HP Support document below that will show you how to find your product number. As well, if you could indicate which operating system you are using. And whether your operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit as with this and the product number I can provide you with accurate information.
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Which Windows operating system am I running?
Is the Windows Version on My Computer 32-bit or 64-bit?
Please re-post with the requested information and I would be happy to provide you with assistance. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

    the problem was solved
    byt anothe proplem appeared
my laptop always on and too loud
    even the processor is cool
it blow cool air out of air vents
thats mean there isn't any overheating inside
i dowloaded a program to show me the processor temp.
it ranged between 43 and 50 celesius
i just want to know if i can change the rage which fan working on
or its a technical issue and i have to go technical support

This is the problem of the fan and not BIOS/System problem.
At such temperature Fan always keep cooling your laptop.
The cooler the laptop is the better working and lifespan!
If fan makes noise, get only the fan replaced.

  • Fans always max speed from boot

    Hi,
my macbook pro unibody (15") has fans always on at maximum speed even. No matter the temperature of cpu or % of CPU activity (smcfan is of no use). Batteries drained in one hours...no use of a portable,
After an hardware check it seems some temperature sensor were not working properly.
I've got my logic board changed and.......fans keep running at top speed and now also keyboard backlight is gone....any suggestion...I'll ask to change the machine that is clearly faulty somewhere...
    Any hints from Apple?
    Ciao
    Nik

Have you tried running the extended version of the Apple Hardware test? If you get an error code indicating the sensors, it may be that they were not properly plugged into the logic board following the logic board replacement. If the sensors are not sensing the temperature, the fans will run all out by default. If the sensors themselves are faulty, then replacing the logic board will not cure the problem.
For the backlight, check in System preferences>Keyboard & Mouse> Keyboard and make sure the box is checked to illuminate the keyboard under low light conditions. If it is and the keyboard still does not light, the keyboard backlight flex cable may not have been well seated.
Who did the repair? Apple or an AASP? If the latter, it may be worth trying someone different. It sounds like the logic board replacement may not have been done as carefully as it should have been.
    Good luck!

  • Is it wrong to turn off the option ( fan always on )

    my notebook is dv6-1235
is it wrong to turn off the option ( fan always on ) from the bios..... because iam afraid that it will hurt the cpu or the graphic card as they become so hot somtimes ....

you can turn the setting off...there is still a failsafe to kick the fan on if the system gets way too hot

  • My fan always runs on my macbook, any tips?

Currently I have my macbook on a clean desk with good ventilation, but my fan always runs, even if there are no programs open. I've reset the SMC, and checked that theres no printing jobs in the printing queue but no luck. I've had this macbook for about a year and a half and have used it a ton since then. I dont want anything to burn out or break in my laptop. Any tips? thanks

I have the same problem on my late 2008 Macbook white 2.1 GHz Intel duo, running 10.5.8. I had read in another post here that I should check Activity Monitor and I did so. The first time I tried, as soon as I launched AM the fan stopped. I then left AM open and the next time the fan started (I was online, doing nothing in particular - I did have 4 or 5 panels open though) I checked AM and the process that came at the top of the list with 90-odd CPU usage was kernel_task. I quit AM and then launched it again and the fan stopped, with kernel_task taking up about 2% of the CPU and Safari around 30%.
    What's going on? Hardware? Software?

  • Compaq CQ62 225sa cooling fan always on? is this normal?

hi hopefully someone can help, i picked up a new CQ62 laptop today, and am concerned that the fan is constantly whirring away, its not loud but noticeably there in the background. its a bit annoying so i am wondering if there is a problem or not?

Press "ESC" while booting to access the BIOS. Click on the "System Configuration" tab, change "Fan Always On" to "Disabled".

  • MBP fans & tilting

So tonight I wanted to see how much it takes to get the MBP fans running, as I've never, ever noticed them before. I wrote a Python script that uses 100% CPU, and ran it twice (once for each core). I started at 51C, and it quickly jumped up to 75C within 60 seconds of running the scripts. It got to 79C, and then I felt (but not heard) the fans come on. The only indication I had that they were running was the vibration they made. The temperature hovered around 73C.
But this is the interesting part. I lifted my MBP up so I could bring it closer to my ears. and all of a sudden I couldn't feel the fans anymore, and the temperature immediately spiked back up to 79C. When I leveled it out, the fans came back, and the temperature went down. If they turned off because the back vent was suddenly more open, why did the temperature spike? I can't think of anything.
Can anyone else confirm this, or am I just losing my mind?

They're treating you as such because to Apple it IS
well within specs. Some guy complained about his
computer going all the way 90 (almost boiling) and
apple said same crap and ur complaining w/ 79, thats
    all.
Yeah, heat is bad and Apple's paste-happy techs could
be partly to blame but, it is still "within specs".
I wonder how wide those specs are...
I was ready to buy a new Macbook Pro but after reading about all these heat issues and an undeclocked GPU and whining sounds I've been having second thoughts. I did find this spec sheet http://www.intel.com/design/intarch/coreduo/coreduo_spec.htm on the Intel website which does state that the core duo will run from 0-100c.
That being said I still think that temperatures approaching 90c is still too close to the wrong end of the specification. Surely the hotter it runs it must affect performance/lifespan. Does anyone know if the new Macbook Pros (released with the Macbooks) have addressed these heat issues and if they are still underclocking the GPU? (and 0-100c, I'd like to see one running at 0c, maybe in a blizzard whilst trekking the arctic circle)

Hi there, I purchased on early August a brand new HP 15 Pavillon N253SL with AMD A6. After just a couple of weeks now the fan always go at max speed and it's pretty noisy. Any idea on why it happened and what to do?

My MBP 15" always crash while playing  Assassin's Creed 2  . And always crash after exit PES 2011 . How to fix it . T T

Are these games recommended specs following the CPU, the GPU, and RAM of your machine? Is your operating system exactly with the recommended speces of the game?  I.e. a game that says it is 10.6.x compatible has only been tested with 10.6 & 10.6.1, but probably not always 10.6.2 through 10.6.7.

  • IMac G5 fan always at maximum speed after booting into si...

IMac G5 fan always at maximum speed after booting into single-user mode in 10.4.3
    Model: 1.6GHz iMac G5 with 10.4.3
I updated my iMac to 10.4.3, then booted into single-user mode to do some cleaning at the command-line level. I know, as others have discovered, that in single-user mode, the thermal control is off, so the fan gradually increases up to maximum speed and stays there until you reboot or go into multi-user mode. Well, I have never experienced this one before, and I'm freaking out about it... I went into single-user mood one reboot after upgrading to 10.4.3, and after all the println white text lines ended, the [1] fan shot up to maximum speed in 0.35 seconds (it sounded like a high-pitched DJ record scratch during the time interval), [2] the fan stayed at maximum speed when I left single-user mode, and [3] I cannot get the fan to slow itself! I rebooted, shut down, and even tried booting off the Tiger CD, but the instant I hit the power button to turn on the iMac, the fans blast up to maximum speed. They shut down when I put the iMac to Sleep, but then they blast up again in full when it wakes up. I checked my settings in the Energy Saver preference pane, and I have the performance set to "Reduced," which is the lowest possible.
I searched to see if anyone else had this problem or if the KBase had any info, but I didn't see any. I'm thinking about erasing and installing my stuff on the iMac, even though I just did that today.
Again, this maximum speed fan problem is freaking me out. It just started when I booted into single-user mode in OS X 10.4.3. I have booted into single-user mode before (10.4.2) and have not experienced this fan issue. I repeat, the fans blast up to maximum speed after pressing the power switch to turn on the computer, so they do not even wait for the Apple logo to show up on the screen before blasting away. How can I get these fans to not do this anymore?!

for the last few months my 20" 1.8GHz Imac has been very noisy - fans seem to run constantly and noisily. It might have been when updating to Tiger but I was never sure. Today, on the advice of a chat tech, I opened the case and reset the SMU to hopefully cure another problem. I noticed that all the air vents, intake and expel ones, were all quite heavily clogged up - not blocked but clogged with dust and fluff. I cleared it away mainly by blowing but also with a hand held hoover held close by. The exposed fan still as a lot of muck on it but greatly reduced and all the vents are completely clear. Having put everything back together again the iMac has been runnning quietly all day. May have been the SMU reset but equally might just be that the computer couldn'tdraw in cool air, circulate it or expel it properly and the fans had to work overtime to cope. Worth checking if you have noisy fans running at speed constantly.

  • HP Pavilion G6 FAN always on

I have heard of these heat issues but the fan noise is annoying this laptop is just two weeks old, the vents should not be dirty this soon,
In the Bios you have the option of turing the fan off,
I am just wondering this  fan being always on I do understand it is keeping the system cool but it should not be always on, that sounds to me design flaw,
BIOS is all updated to the latest I use the support Assistant to grab all the updates.
So do I have a lemon on my hands here ?

As far as I've gathered, it is a design flaw, or you could say an intentional compromise.
Like you said, your vents probably aren't dirty, but the fan is always on because the laptop ships with the BIOS setting to "Fan Always On". It can be annoying, but if HP did their homework this setting should keep the processor from burning up, and therefore functional.
I have a dv4. I recently turned off that setting (since it's winter anyway, and I'm not throttling my processor). The fan kicks on every so often, and kicks off when the temp drops acceptably. So, it is still monitoring the temp, which is good.
My brother has a G6 (I believe) which came with a faulty, rattling fan, which actually lasted for a year. His laptop started shutting itself down due to high operating temps toward the end, and he got that fixed. The new fan is still always on, but now it's keeping everything cool enough, and it's quieter.
My laptop doesn't burn up like his does. You'll have to determine if your fan really should be on all the time, given the design of your particular model. I'll be turning my fan setting back to always on in the summer time.
