  • Microsoft Ofiice X - Startup Failure on Mac Pro running Leopard

On starting up my mac pro this morning, Entourage failed to start up, stalling at the product license panel that pops up just before launching the application fully. I found the same problem occurs with all the other applications in Office X (Word, Powerpoint and Excel). I uninstalled and re-loaded Office X and the fault continues. I upgraded to Leopard when it was launched so do not think this is the problem.
Does anybody have an idea what could be causing the problem and, this is my main concern, will Time Machine have saved details of all my contacts and recent emails in Entourage as i have some important emails that I need to recover

  • SolidWorks x64 Edition up and running on Mac Pro

I have the 64-bit version of Solidworks running on my Mac Pro and it's a screamer!
I used Solidworks 2007 x64 Edition on Windows XP x64 Professional on my Mac Pro for a solid 3 hours today at work. I had no problems other than a slow SATA hard-drive issue that is well known and remains unfixed on my machine. However, once Windows has loaded the registry with the program guts it runs like a top, just don't expect it to load up a program for the first time blazingly fast and you'll be fine.
Be that as it may, even with all the hardware issues I still have, SolidWorks is AWESOME on the Mac Pro, even better than any other Intel boxes I've used previously. To be fair, I don't have any experience with SW 2007 x64 on real XP x64 box.
(I posted this on another thread earlier, but at the time I didn't know what I was doing. I felt this information would be of better use under this category.)
For those who want to do this and run the x64 version of XP here's the drivers and the drill:
My Windows software is sourced from a free download of x64 120 day trial version from Windows.
Interestingly enough, I called Microsoft and asked what happens after 120 days, the answer was...."I don't know"...
    weird.
Anyway, for those who don't know how to get the format of the download file to be correct for Boot Camp to recognize it as a Windows CD, here's the procedure.
This is all done on the Mac Pro.
    1. Download XPx64 from: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/facts/trial.mspx
    2. Open Disk Utility
    2. Double click downloaded file: WS03SP1RTM_1830_PX6EN.iso (this will allow you to see it in Disk Utility)
    3. In Disk Utility select the WS0...EN.iso file mentioned previously and click the "convert" button.
    4. When the "Save as" box pops up set the location to wherever you want ( I named the file the same name w/o the .iso extension and put it on my desktop) and set the Image Format to "DVD/CD master", Encryption to "none"
    5. After saving the file, it will show up with a new extension *.cdr. Double click this file in the Disk Utility drive list.
    6. After Finder finishes launching the file, go back to Disk Utility and select your new *.cdr file and click the Partition button to the right.
    7. Once in the partition window, select Options and set the partition scheme to "Master Boot Record", hit OK.
    8. After getting back in the partition window, select Volume Scheme and set to "1 partition", The size should be around 558.62 MB (don't worry about the format set to mac OS extended and the other greyed functions)
    9. Select the Burn icon, insert your CD-R, set your post burning options, and have a Coke and a smile. Verify the file format is ISO 9660 file system by selecting the "get info" on the CD under "Finder".
**TIP #1 - make sure you've printed out the e-mail from Microsoft outlining the setup instructions and including the CD-Key. Don't be like me and get 98% through the Windows setup where it asks you for CD-Key and have to power off the computer and get it out of OS X.**
**TIP #2 - Since you are using an Apple keyboard Windows doesn't seem to be able to use it on the blue screen portion of the install. My remedy (after assuming the install locked up 6 times in a row) is to go find a cheap-o usb keyboard and mouse lying around (probably standard Microsoft stuff in your closet) and plug it in to be back of your Mac Pro tower. You do not need to go through the Mac OS hardware setup thing that pops up.
    10. After printing out your MS instruction e-mail and plugging in your keyboard and mouse (see above), launch Boot Camp (don't even try to use the driver CD it makes, it's useless for XP x64) and install XP x64.
    11. Have a beer and a smile, you will need the alcohol in your blood from here on out.
**TIP #3 - go buy 2 or 3 magazines and get a comfortable chair.**
    12. Install Windows, follow the Boot Camp Beta instructions carefully until you get to the part where you install the driver CD. It won't work.
    13. Follow these links to get the x64 drivers:
    Audio: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlhd-2.aspx?lineid=2004052&famid=2004052&ser ies=2004061&Software=True&title=HD%20Audio%20CODECs
Nvidia Graphics driver for the 7300GT (remember, this is for Win XP x64 edition so it's not the same as the regularly posted 32 bit version):
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp64_91.47.html
LAN drivers (Be sure to get the x64 version):
Download PROEM64T.exe from the Intel website
    13. Update Windows.
**NOTE: I am still having the same driver issues as others that have installed XP x64 on a Mac Pro, for example the Apple keyboard and mouse function, but the CtlAltDel and Eject CD disk remain non functional.**
    14. Install SolidWorks 2007 x64 from the included DVD in your software update box that came in the mail last week.

    Alright CT, here's the deal.
You'll need to update windows first, they have the HD USB audio device driver update on Windows Update. After this, install the RealTek driver you downloaded earlier. Don't worry about windows saying it found a device but can't find the driver for it, that'll be fixed when you run the Realtek install program.
As far as the broken stuff in Device Manager, it's the usual stuff everyone has (be sure to go to "view", "show hidden devices" to see all the stuff) :
    -USB human interface device
    -Other device
-unknown device x3 (you will note there is also one unknown device on the Mac os)
    -Intel(R) 5000 Series Chipset PCI Express x4 (Port 3 thru Port7)
As far as performance goes, BIG IMPROVEMENT! I did the slipstream fix using the 64bit drivers (obviously) and found out the hard way that you do infact have to use Boot Camp and delete and recreate the partition for a reinstall.
(tried to install on top of existing installation twice...failed twice. Suck!)
I used the picture guide located at:
    http://st118.startlogic.com/~macproxp/index.html
I don't understand all the super-geek evaluation stuff when using the recommended evaluation SiSoftware Sandra, but it looks like the drive is listed as a:
    ST3250824AS (P)ATA
I thought this driver was supposed to turn it into a SATA drive. Maybe it did and I'm just an idiot. So, I downloaded HD tune (give me a chart anyday over a bunch of gobbledy-gook numbers & letters) and installed it.
Here are the numbers after making about 40 copies of a 59.8 MB file on the desktop to the desktop (to try and tax the processor/hd):
    HD Tune: ST3250824AS P Benchmark
    Transfer Rate Minimum : 0.6 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Maximum : 66.9 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Average : 20.2 MB/sec
    Access Time : 13.0 ms
    Burst Rate : 152.4 MB/sec
    CPU Usage : 1.5%
This is no where close to 3GB/sec, but a helluva lot faster than 35KB/sec like before, pretty dang fast nonetheless.
Hopefull someone smarter that me can figure out if I'm at the fastest I can go or not.

  • I am running a MAC PRO 10.6.8 and it has firefox 3.6.1.3 and it shows no updatres available? My MAC Book PRo has updated to 6.0.2. can I manually update my MAC PRO to 6.0.2 or is there a reason the MAC PRO should NOT use 6.0.2?

    see question above

I am in my late 60's so I can't imagine all the changes and questions to what to do but... new Macs do not boot from an OS the pre-dates it.
The Mac Pro is 7.5 yrs old , I have the August 2006 1,1 right here right now.
Sounds like we have the same system - Mac Pro 1,1 2.66 dual/dual-core (total of 4-cores) DDR2 FB-DIMMs et c.
These cannot run Mountain Lion 10.8.x
The PowerMac G5 came out in Sept/Oct 2003 and shipping with10.3.0/
I would do a clean install. Than install all apps from scratch.
Upgrade CS5 first ahead of time if you want Migration or Setup Assistant.

  • Will Nikon Scan 4 run on Mac Pro?

The new Mac Pro will be delivered tomorrow. While gathering as much information as possible about the compatibility of my current programs, I came upon a note on the Nikon website, stating that Nikon Scan 4 is not compatible with Intel Macs.
I imagine it would be running through Rosetta. Am I correct? Or will I have to keep the old G4 as a dedicated scanning computer?

It finally works! Instead of installing it again from
the disk I downloaded Nikon Scan 4 and the 4.02
update from Nikon's site, and that one works,
although it has the same name without anything
indicating it might be a modified version. Has me
    wondering, but hey, it works!
I was wondering how well it works and if the post scan processing of slides using using the Mac Pro is faster than your G4 machine. I scan about 45,000 slides a year and am looking to upgrade my DP G4 1.42 machines.
I was talking to NikonUSA yesterday and there is no information on if and when Scan 4 will be updated, for now it appears that it runs under Rosseta. Their Official position is that it may or not run on a MacPro.
    Thank you for any feedback.
As for VueScan. The dynamic range at 4000DPI 16bit scans is much better with Nikon's software. Not just my opinion but is shared by those who pay me to do their work.

  • Driver disk will not auto run on Mac Pro 08

    Hi
I have a Mac Pro early 08 and i'm finding the Leopard driver disk will not auto run "to install" drivers but it only gives me 2 other options for disk share and something else which I forget now as I un=installed.

    Hi
Oh god no I popped the disk in when WVU finished installing and arrived on the desktop and it only gives me 2 install options.1.for the MB air and another for disk sharing but why does it not install drivers aotomatically?
The driver disk does not aoto run under vista and which drivers do I use ..also the ATI just does not want to work "advising errors of hardware or software" not installed.
I have done this numerous times on the iMac and XPP worked fine with the driver disk but WVU is giving me headaches.

  • Should I run the Mac Pro while it is open?

I think that the loud fan noise coming from my Mac Pro is the GPU. It's a loud humming fan noise. I want to try holding the fan down on it while the computer is running to see if it stops making the noise, but I'm afraid to open the Mac while it's running. Is it OK to open it while it's running?
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but this is the first Mac Pro I've used, and I'm afraid that I will break my $1000 computer.

Thanks for the recommendation. Hardware Monitor reported the same temperatures as iStat Menus, but it's more feature-robust. I like that guy's note on how it's not an App Store App
I actually opened my Mac while it was running and held down the GPU fan, and the weird lawnmower noise was coming from it. Some blasting from a compressed air can seemed to fix it, but the main fan is still a bit noisy. I think it's just worn down (since this is a used PC that I bought) and could use some lube.

  • Is there a way to run my Mac Pro & Macbook Pro on one 30" apple display?

I have an apple 30" Cinema display that, unfortunately, does not have an input for 2 computers. Is there a KVM Switch or something that will easily let me use my monitor on my laptop and desktop and use the full resolution of the screen?

  • TS3354 Running Win7/64 on Mac Pro with Bootcamp, unable to buy iTunes HD movies

    Hi,
ran into issue with Mac Pro tower connected to dual Apple Cinema 23-inch (final generation) displays. Running Win7/64 SP1 under Bootcamp on second HD; running iTunes latest, and unable to buy HD movie from iTunes store even though have latest Bootcamp drivers and Mountain Lion, and monitors connected via Displayport, Apple HD, and video (ATI Radeon 5700 series).
Is this an issue with iTunes not being able to detect the video card or displays under bootcamp in Windows?
    (SIGH.)
Any suggestion would be helpful. I work during day on my Mac Pro, using Win7/64 most of the time; like to buy stuff on iTunes, like music, etc., and then be able to in living room download to also use with Macbook Pro and a Win7/64 HTPC.
Sorry to see such spotty support for iTunes on Windows 7 these days -- granted it's not their main product line, but still.

Just to clarify I am an advanced user going back to Mac SE/30, and so forth.
If you're not running Bootcamp on Windows, on Mac hardware, this discussion won't be of interest to y'all.
    robgw:
as you may or may not know, it doesn't look like the drivers that Apple installs for Windows with bootcamp provides the full control panel, so under the Windows device info all one sees is this:
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
Everything works, but there is no Radeon control panel, and no way for Windows to see if its HDCP compliant, even thugh it is.
Sadly Apple doesn't provide a proper "Radeon" control panel for Windows, and I've heard of massive problems installing the defacto ATI Windows driver package on Bootcamp, as it might conflict with Bootcamp's drivers. The ATI site doesn't even have a modern download for Bootcamp ... it's up to Apple to provide.
SO, I guess I was trying to see how one could enable the ability for Windows to "see" the display properties (Apple's drivers recognize it as a cinema display, but that's about it).
iTunes won't allow purchase of the HD version -- it will only allow purchase of the SD version.
Perhaps another person using this kind of set-up might weigh in if they have a chance. Not world ending, just one of the minor annoyances with not having the full dirver control panel on Windows, running on Mac Pro HD.

  • Can I run the new Mac pro (6.1) with only one stick of ram?

Will that cause any problems. And if not how much will the overall quality be affected. it won't be a permanent solution, but for a few weeks at least. So can it happen? Can I run the Mac pro 2013 with only one memory stick?

    Per this
    http://blog.macsales.com/22745-mix-and-match-more-memory-faster-mac-pro-2
the 2013 Mac Pro is the only MP that can use a single stick of memory.

  • Running Mac Pro constantly - good or bad?

Since I stream all my content to my apple tv, my Mac Pro runs all the time. In fact, I only restart it once every other month or so. Since it is always streaming, it never sleeps either (nor do I let it).
Everything appears to be running normal, but I just want to make sure this is OK. It was quite an investment, and I need to know if I am decreasing the life of my Mac (or wearing anything out).
    Thanks.

Most frequent answer to "run or sleep" overnight is: Set the monitor to sleep, let the system and hard drive run.
But that answer is getting old because I don't think that, after 10.3, we need to leave the system run to run the chron scripts.
Also consider: sleep versus shut down is choice of energy consumption (i.e., electric bills).
I think you will find that there is little information about the effect of running a given Mac (or any computer we will likely own) constantly (for "x years") because- such computers are "by design" going to lose their usefulness before they "break down from over-use."
Possibly a helpful example will clarify what I'm trying to say:
In 1999, I bought an Apple LC II - made in 1993. I kept it running for a couple years - until the hard drive failed. It would have been simple to replace the hard drive and I could have kept it running even longer. But - that Mac was using OS 7.5.5! - So it was waay out of date and usefulness. Easier and more effective to just buy a new iMac (at the time).
I got my eMac in Aug. 2003: it still runs, it is "adequate" for routine use and will probably remain so for a bit longer. Right now, it is in sleep mode in the next room. I have used that eMac at least 6 hours a day since I got it. (And it's been in screen-only sleep mode most of the rest of the time.) But when I want to "keep up" with Apple technology (and my own needs) - I have to buy a newer Mac with (in this case Intel) newer processor and newer version of operating system and newer versions of critical apps.
"I wonder what the recommended procedure is for running a Mac Pro (or any Mac for that matter). Shutdown at night? Sleep at night?" --
You may find a consensus or "average" answer to that question. I don't believe you will find the "definitive" answer because the Mac Pro is designed to satisfy a variety of personal and business needs. Ultimately: you should establish your own needs and set at least a rough "schedule" during which the Mac Pro is either in sleep mode or running.
Sorry if I seem "vague" - but the above is per my experience. It's all probabilities in the end: probably, you will not have a problem caused by keeping the Mac Pro running "indefinitely." Be consoled the Mac Pro isn't limited to the "unitized" or all-in-one construction scheme; you can replace most vital parts in a Mac Pro yourself.
Personally, I think if I continue keeping, maintaining and using my Mac Pro as I have my previous Macs, I will have this Mac Pro for even longer (4 or more years) than I had the earlier ones.
Also - the "standard rule" for any Mac or PC is to keep backups of your data and to keep a bootable 2nd drive installed in case of emergencies. But you probably have heard that advice a dozen times already.
    Regards,
    macnoel

  • Running Premiere on a Mac Pro 1.1

I currently run a Mac Pro 1.1 that's maxed out with OSX 10.6.8. My system will not be able to support the most current Adobe Premiere Pro CC (2014) which states it needs 10.8 or higher.  The previous Premiere version worked great when I downloaded a trial version a few years ago, but can I still purchase/download this older version of Premiere for my Mac? I'm not planning on purchasing a new Mac for another 2 years. The 1.1 still works wonderfully. Thanks!

    things are hanging frequently
When you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
