Is minidv dead? I don't know where to begin

My minidv camera is in need of repair. I'm not sure yet what it's going to cost, but I decided to take a quick look at buying a new minidv camera. It would appear that minidv is at its last gasp, and I don't know where to begin in searching for a new camera. Here are some of my questions/thoughts:
1) This is just a hobby for me and I'm on a tight budget.
2) I have hundreds of hours of footage stored on minidv tape. I've already imported and edited 75% of that footage, but I still want to keep the original unedited footage for future projects.
3) As I'm looking at some newer cameras, I see that they come in 480 vs. 1,080 lines of resolution. Would I be correct that 1,080 equals HD?
4) If I buy an HD camera, what are the implications of mixing that footage with my minidv footage?
5) I don't have a clue what to do with flash vs. disc storage type cameras. . .All the acronyms are foreign to me. What are the implications of these formats . . .especially as it pertains to bringing the footage into FCP?
6) Along that same line of thought, do these newer cameras store the footage with some kind of compression that will lose its quality when I import it into FCP?
Maybe there's a link to an article that will make this simpler for me. There's just too much out there and I don't know where to begin.
Thanks!

1) OK
2) OK
3) Yes, SD is 480 pixels high; HD is either 720 or 1080 pixels high (currently).
4) Implications of mixing? Well you have options. You could leave each as they are, it would be much like watching TV where you often see SD footage during the course of an HD program. Or you could down-convert the HD footage to SD for editing and delivery.
5) With card based recording devices, you'd "Log & Import" rather than "Log & Capture" as you do with tape. The real long term implications with card based recording, you have no back up of the footage like tape provides. So you'd need to purchase a lot of cards to keep a backup - or lots of hard drive space to store backups.
6) Yes, almost all digital formats record using a compression algorithm. Even DV is compressed 5:1 when recorded to tape.
If you want to stay with MiniDV (since this is a hobby for you), you may want to consider purchasing a used tape-based camera for now.

I need to update my Iphone but I don't know where to begin.  The phone is plugged into my computer, but I
don't know what to do after that.  Thanks for any help!!

Before updating, import all you photos to your computer (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083) and back up your contacts (by syncing them with iCloud or another service such as Google, with a supported application such as Outlook or Address Book, or using an app like My Contacts Backup.  Then open iTunes, click on the name of your phone on the left side, go to the Summary tab to the right and click on Check for Update.

  • I Don't Know Where To Begin

Okay so I have the newest Java and I'm reading up on it I went and downloaded the JDK but their were two files and the biggest one won't let me install it because it says it's not a valid windows installer package. I installed the smaller one though but I don't even understand how I open it. If I could get some help on this that would be great, thanks much.

"SE" means "standard edition", I believe. It's core java. That's the one you want.
You want the SDK. "SDK" means "software development kit" (or sometimes people say "software developer's kit"). It has the compiler and other such tools, plus the runtime environment.
"JRE" is "Java runtime environment". If you're only going to run Java programs but not write any, you'd just need this. But if you're going to write some, you need the SDK.
There's also the "JDK", which I believe is just short for "Java SDK". For all intents and purposes JDK and SDK are equivalent (at least when you're just talking about Java).
"EE" is "enterprise edition"; it's basically libraries that are useful for writing applications for enterprises, that is, businesses and large organizations. It has stuff to write functionality for web servers, to tie different servers together, etc. You don't need it.
You need to download the Java J2SE SDK. You should probably download the one for JDK 1.5 (aka Java 5), and not JDK 1.6 (aka Java 6, I guess), because 6 is newer, actually I think it's still in beta, so it won't have as many bugs cleaned up yet.

  • Don't know where to begin???

iTunes on my iMac running Maverick is behaving badly.
    1. Devices appear and disappear from the devices list in iTunes.
    2. Purchased apps sync to the iTunes library on the mac, but not songs.
    3. Sometimes sync fails with "internal device error" -50 on all of my iDevices.
    4. One of my iPhones will not sync over wifi, only syncs when plugged in to the iMac.  This phone is configured identically to my other iDevices which do sync via wifi.
    5. iTunes gets stuck with the pinwheel of death repeatedly.
    6. iTunes needs a force quit from time to time.
    7. Lots of nasty error messages in the log - see photo.
Sorry to be so vague.  I have spent hours on this with no luck.  Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    6. Sometimes, iTunes won't shut down normally and requires a force quit

    Duane and Tesserex,
Thank you both for your suggestions. I am going to give them both a shot, starting with hooking the AX up to the modem with Ethernet. (I actually thought about that yesterday and headed to the local electronics store for a cable but they told me it wouldn't work and said (like Duane) that both the PC and the iMac would have to be wireless.)
Tesserex, to answer your question about the modem...yes, it does support ethernet but it says I can connect via Ethernet OR USB, which I take to mean you can't do both. I will try and if it doesn't work I'll convert to all wireless (which I've been dreading doing!!!)
    I'll keep you posted.

  • So Many Sync Problems I Don't Know Where to Begin

I can't for the life of me get all but a few of my purchased TV shows to sync from iTunes to AppleTV. I've tried switching from "Automatic" sync to "Custom" sync, checking/unchecking boxes, restarting iTunes, repairing permissions -- still nothing behaves as expected.
I'm about ready to throw my AppleTV out the window!! What's going on?

Probably best to custom sync if you want overall control, then select individual shows to sync under the Devices>AppleTV tabs.
Note that if you have items unchecked in the main iTunes views (not the Devices>AppleTV tabs), then they won't stream and probably won't sync either. Check you haven't desleceted shows you want in the main windows.
If there are problems syncing you'll get an exclamation mark next to the AppleTV name in devices - click on it for more info.
    AC
I assume you have plenty of space for these shows to sync and that music or something else isn't syncing first leaving no room for all the shows.

  • So many SL problems, I don't know where to begin!

First my Time Machine backups were deleted one by one 4 days after installing SL. I sat and watched them all go bye bye. One years worth.
My mouse software does not work (Logitech)
Photoshop CS3 crashed so often I upgraded to CS4
My ESATA drivers give Kernel Panics
My Epson printer (2200) no longer works
My Canon Utilities no longer works in 10.6
And after installing 10.6.1, now my firewire 800 ports are not working. Only my USB ports. And Macmail will not send.
    Three words.
    Oh. My. God.

  • I changed my iPhone lately but i can't restore my last backup since it keeps saying "itunes could not restore backup because the password was incorrect" but I don't know where to put the password to make it happen... Any suggestions?

    Hey guys,
I just bought a new iPhone but i can't restore my backup files beacuse it keeps saying "itunes could not restore backup because the password was incorrect" but I really don't know where to put the password to restore it. I really have some files that are meaningful for me so I really need help. Any suggestions anyone?

Select your iDevice in the iTunes.
Choose the Summary screen (tab) and scroll to the bottom of the screen.
    Then un-select Encrypt iPhone backup.
iTunes will then prompt you to “Enter the password to unlock your iPhone backup”, enter the password you set originally.

  • I have very thin, colored lines running vertical on my desktop monitor screen.  I don't know where they come from or how to get rid of them.  I started with one and now have three.  Can anyone give me some insight about what to do in getting rid of them?

I have very thin, colored lines that have shown up on my IMac monitor screen.  I don't know where they came from or how to get rid of them.  I'm concerned now because I started with one and now have three.  Does any know why this occurs or how to get rid of them?

I got an address from Applecare, although I can't place my hand on it right now. I didn't bother persuing the letter route myself as I didn't expect much. I know that the location was Cork, Ireland though as that where the UK Applecare is based as far as I'm aware. The best thing to do is to call Applecare (if it's free) and discuss the issue. State that you are not happy wit the fact that you will have to pay to have the problem resolved especiiay if it is an ongoing problem that has not been resolved. I ended up speaking to a senior manager of the Applecare team who then proceeded to tell me about mailing in my grievence to customer services division or something like that.
If I can find the address I may post it if I'm allowed.
In the case of age, Schools usually have a 5-year life-cycle as they tend to be used differently than consumer machines, i.e. being used constantly on a daily basis for at least 12 hours with no break. you would expect issues to appear after a few years, but I expect problems that arise through defects to be resolved and stay resolved. As I mentioned we had machines for around 2 years before the lines appeared and sent them to be repaired. I'm happy with that. What I am unhappy about is the fact that the problem has reappeared exactly in the same way and now I'm left with around 7 machines that I either pay loads to repair or, the more likely replace the machines with newer ones since the age is now big enough to warrant the replacement.
Sorry for the lengthy moan, but these are the reasons I purchased Apple ahrdware in the first place to avoid the "not our problem" stance some PC vendors  usually take, similar to the Dell monitors thread mentioned in here somewhere.

  • I don't know where to post

Having both a degenerative neurological condition and a large collection of Mac computers I decided I have to get rid of a lot of them and simplify my life.
I don't know where to start or which forum to post in but I am seeking help and suggestions to many mac ownership problems and decisions.
Multiple sclerosis seriously impedes my ability to rationalise and make decisions about many things so sorting out my extensive Apple history could be  a potential nightmare for me so I am seeking some help from Apple enthusiasts and gurus.
I have an extensive collection of macs going back over 30 years and software to match.
I need to rationalise my life as it's become to complicated for me to deal with.
So where do I start front or back ?
I have decide to keep my imac 20" G5 and my Intel imac although slightly faulty.
I tend to archive onto other external and internal 500 gig hard discs.
I am currently backing up my entire CD music collections via itunes and storing them as 16 bit WAV or AAIF on two computers.
Of course it would have been easier if I had known how to do it to one hard disk and transferred and converted files for other computers.
Do you know how long it takes to rip over 200 CDs
I have decided to keep my one or two of G4 1.25 Ghz PPC as they have dual boot capability.
I also have a sonnet G4 3.4 Dual upgrade and I would like to see classic zoom.
I have decided I will get rid on my Dual Wind-tunnel as it's just to noisy.
I will also keep my one of 9600's power macs as I also have a G4 processor upgrade but what OS ?
I also have some serious memory chips and can fill it with 1.5 Gig if need be ?
I am tempted to keep a pizza box Centris or Quadra or even one of the older versions.
I also have nubus and 603e upgrades somewhere.
I think I may only keep one of my classic type computers.
Is it the original mac plus with external CD and HD and FDD ?
So if someone would like to help me please say so.

    First off my page* http://www.macmaps.com/selling.html
offers tips if you should choose to get rid of or sell certain machines.  People knowledgeable about pre-G3 Macs are here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/older_hardware
    and older software here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/older_software
    >Do you know how long it takes to rip over 200 CDs
Average rip time is anywhere between 6 and 10 times faster than the actual run time of the CD if you are talking 192 kbps MP3.  Less time the less you have to compress.
    >I will also keep my one of 9600's power macs as I also have a G4 processor upgrade but what OS ?
Mac OS 9.1 is the best operating system for all PowerPC Macs that have upgrade cards that have PowerPC chips.  http://www.macsales.com/ may have additional info on if a higher end operating system is available for a specific upgrade card.
    >Is it the original mac plus with external CD and HD and FDD ?
The original Mac Plus could take an external SCSI CD and 7.5.5 according to:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_classic/stats/mac_plus.html
which suggests the internal floppy might be upgradeable to DS/DD floppy seeing as 7.1 came on larger floppy disks.  The older hardware forum mentioned above can tell you what can be done with it.  Hope that helps.

The 4G/iOS 6 does not have an Activation Lock. That started with iOS 7.
Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

I received a message on my iPhone 4 that has a video attached to it. I "saved video" but don't know where. How do I find it and send it to mi MacBook Air?

It would have saved to your camera roll.  Connect the phone to your Air via a USB cable and then run Image Capture which is located either in your Utilities folder or Other folder, depending on what version of Mac OS X your are running.  You will then see all the photos and videos stored on your iPhone and can then download them.

I have a 2009 A6 with a 5th Gen. iPod pluggedinto the MMI.  I mostly  listen to audio books, not a lot ofmusic.  The books are 4-6 hours long, vs 4-6minutes with a song.  Often, but not always, when I start my A6, the MMI starts on the first song on my iPod, thereforeI don't know where I stopped in my 4-6 hour book.  How can I get the interface to stay stopped where I left off?  I have gone into iTunes and placed my current book as the first "song" on my iPod for ease of finding it, but often the MMI starts it over at the beginning.  Thank you if anyone has any experience with this.  My dealer in San Rafael, CA says they've never heard of this issue.

I think my iPod, which is an iPod touch 3rd generation , which is a lot different from a nano, which really makes it almost impossible for me to help you, which is why I suggested that you post your question in the iPod nano community.  Your first post says that your product is an iPod nano. I think the people who answer those questions would be most likely to help you. If yours isn't a nano then you can pick the right community from here. This community is really to answer questions about this forum, or issues that don't fit anywhere else.
