Is MP4 or AVCHD format from camera better for editing n PE12?

Hi!
I got a Canon XA25 that can record both in Avchd and mp4. Which format works best for editing in premiere elements 12?
I´m mostly interested in getting elements to work smothly and lagfree.

Just in case note....AVCHD (MPEG4 AVC/H.264) and MPEG4 are the video compression choices that I believe your Canon XA25 is offering. Do not get confused with .mp4 container which is the file extension representing a container format that wraps the video and audio compression.
I think that you would get good quality with either the "AVCHD" or the "MPEG4" video compression choice, but you would probably get excellent quality with AVCHD. The AVCHD seems to be the online preference in the comparison of AVCHD and MPEG4 video compression. I suspect one of the differences between the two choices would be the audio format that each uses in your camera....AVCHD, probably Linear PCM or Dolby Digital and MPEG4, AAC.
I am not sure of the file extensions that come with these video audio compressions. In the case of AVCHD, probably .mts and in the case of MPEG4, probably .mp4.
On general principles, I would go with the AVCHD choice for import into Premiere Elements. But, if you have problems with Canon AX25's AVCHD.mts, then determine how the best quality alternative behaves. I am not 100% on what Canon is offering in what it is calling "mp4"....whether that is AVCHD video compression with a .mp4 file extension instead of .mts or whether it it MPEG4 video compression with a .mp4 file extension. I have been up and down the Canon AX25 User Manual and have yet to sort that out to a 100% satisfaction.

Thanks, your comments looked correct but did not solve my problem. You may be interested to know after much testing and research, I was able to ascertain that some of the camera's AVCHD settings iMovie cannot see at all (only some, which made it even harder to figure out!). Plus, if you have recorded movie clips in more than one format to the memory card (MP4 or any one of the AVCHD's), iMovie cannot see any of the AVCHD's.
Bottom line - forgo the benefits of AVCHD on the Sony NEX-5N and just use MP4 until Apple makes it easier.

Having problems opening a photo in camera raw for editing

Has anyone had problems getting a photo to open in camera raw for editing?
I open a photo and go to edit, then click on full edit, then go to file and click on open as. I then go to the pop-up menu and click on camera raw.
When I click on open, the photo should open in camera raw so I can edit it but nothing happens. Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas what I might be doing wrong? This progrem has little value if I cant edit my photos. Thanks for your imput.

Check your plug-in is up to date for your Camera and model. The latest Adobe CAMERA RAW PLUG-IN IS 6.3 (for PSE9)
Open Full Edit and click Help >>About Plug-in >>Camera Raw
Otherwise click Help >>Updates and then follow the on-screen instructions.

Trouble importing AVCHD clips from camera

Yesterday I was using my Canon Vixia HG20 to record AVCHDclips, which records it in a .cpi file. Although I’m unable to play them onQuickTime, I was able to import them through Final Cut Pro X by using “ImportFrom Camera”. Then I was able to edit the videos with no problems. But nowtoday, after recording more footage, when I hook up my camera to my MacBook Pro2011 entry level 15” (the same computer I used yesterday) my camera doesn’t evenshow up on the list in Import From Camera; the only camera in the list is thebuilt in FaceTime camera. I’m not sure if it makes a difference, but both todayand yesterday I have been using a PlayStation 3 charger cable to connect thecamera to the laptop. Any ideas on how to get the camera to show up in thelist, or at least another way to edit these files? Also, I read on anothersimilar post that their camera wouldn’t show up on Final Cut Pro X but it wouldfor iMovie, however I tried this and my camera won’t show up on the Import FromCamera list on iMovie either.

If I open the chip has the structure of extension file. 1920x1080 MTS format (1080/60i), after using the program sony the extension of the file becomes as written previously tried to import the file. Dragged from MTS clip the desktop, and nomatter, I wonder if I use ClipWrap which settings should I use to lose nothing in image quality?

I've been giving HD videos in MTS format and convert the for editing in FCE. Looks good in the program, but when I export the finished film, quality had been noticeable diminished. Is there any way to prevent FCE from lowering the output quality?

G5 Power PC vs Imac...which is better for editing with final cut studio 2?

This is my present computer:
iMac 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo (2008 model)
4 gigs of 800 mhz ddr2 sdram (this is the max ram for this computer! )
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS 512 MB
Hard drive: 465 gig (I use mainly external drives for editing)
I use this mainly for video editing with final cut studio 2.
Rendering in compressor takes forever!!!
A friend suggested I pick up a used G5 Power PC.
I found this one, here are the specs:

According to my friend, the older G5s are much better at processing video.
Is a dual 2 GHZ processor enough or would I need a 2.3 or 2.5?
OR is there another option that someone might be able to suggest?
I would be so appreciative of any opinions regarding this issue.

Save your pennies and look for a refurbished or used MacPro. Early 2008 or newer 8 core machines w/8GB of RAM running 4 instances in QMaster will chew through material.
Beyond running compressor, it is just a better all round machine for editing video.
• it has multiple internal drive bays which run via SATA connections - much faster than the FW800 limits of the iMac for external drives
• it has 3 slots which give you the option of an i/o card from AJA, Blackmagic or Matrox so that you can actually monitor your video properly as well as ingest high end formats
• the slots give you the ability to connect esata raids for even higher data speeds
• you have much greater flexibility with computer monitors
• you have much greater RAM capacity

Which are Better For Editing: Speakers or Headphones

I am editing a low budget feature length movie using Final Cut Pro Studio 2 and I am just learning about the sound side of editing. Can anyone help me with the following?
1. Is it better to edit using speakers or headphones?
2. If speakers, which are the optimal speakers to use? (Price range limited to $300)
3. If headphones, which are the optimal headphones to use? (Price range limited to $300)

Listen, listen, listen before you buy and
look for speaker specs that show a smooth overall response.
You will want to buy what are termed "near field" (aka "close-field") monitors.
(you may also need a sub-woofer)

As for headphones, listen to some high end models from Sennheiser, Sony etc.
Make sure they don't artificially boost the presence frequencies (around 3KHz).
Once more a smooth response is what you need.

If you are mixing music, FX, and voice, headphone listening can give you a false sense of the correct balance and perspective.
They are most useful for isolating you from background noise in your editing environment. Also, tracking down problems in you source audio.
But, mixing to your speakers is the way to go.

I'm looking to buy a camera, the Panasonic Lumix FZ100, but was wondering if the format AVCHD works with iMovie? I intend to use it for vlogging and don't want it to overcomplicate things..

To convert a DVD or MPEG to DV with MPEG Streamclip (v1.5.1 or later):
Open a desired .VOB on a DVD (DVD/VIDEOTS/VTS_011.VOB, for example) or a MPEG file. Select the In/Out points if you want to extract just a portion of the video. Choose "File/Export to DV.../Compression: DV (DV25)".
Choose "Split DV stream in Segments" if the content is more than 9 minutes 27 seconds because iMovie 1-4 can't reliably handle longer clip files and it might be a good idea to limit the converted .dv file's size anyway (segmented clips play seamlessly in iMovie).
MPEG Streamclip can optionally resample audio to 48 kHz which DV (and DVD) use (use this option when converting (S)VCD 44.1 kHz audio for DV).
Other settings can usually be at their defaults. Sometimes you have to check whether the input/output is PAL or NTSC.

Need codec for footage from Sony EX1 for edit in Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0; Help

I'm using Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0 to try and edit Sony EX1 film footage transfered to my external hardrive. When I try and import the film footage, I receive and error message reading "codec missing or unavailable".
Can you please provide assistance in finding the needed codec?

This is what you need to use if you want to edit video in FCE without having to constantly render.
Within the Apple Intermediate Codec selection there are parameters you can set (frame size, frame rate and a few other things) ... but these do not normally need to be tweaked because in most cases MPEG Streamclip is smart enough to detect the nature of your source video file(s) and select the appropriate settings for you.
The point is, if you're not capturing video directly from a DV, HDV or AVCHD camcorder, then you need to convert your video as above if you want to edit it in FCE with minimum issues.

Delete original file (from camera)

I use iPhoto and Photoshop on my Mac for different purposes: iPhoto for family events and travel that I won't be doing much (if any) editing to, and Photoshop (Elements 7) for my hobby photography pictures.
I got on Photoshop this morning to import some recent photos from my camera, hooked things up as always, opened Bridge CS3, and selected File>Get photos from camera.
For some reason, I can't find the Delete Original Files checkbox in the Photo Downloader screen (whereas it shows up here: http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/Bridge/2.0/help.html?content=WSEC378273-AF69-4a1e-9CD8-10 8420C556ED.html). I could be totally wrong, but thought I've always done things this way in the past to reduce a lot of tiny-camera-button-clicking through tons of photos.
Did this button disappear with a version update? Do I have some other option set incorrectly to not allow this one to appear? Or has the button never been there, and if not, is there a way to delete photos in mass from my camera?

What you saw was a screenshot of Bridge CS4, somewhat misleading regarding the URL mention Bridge 2.0 in fact it is Bridge 3.0 that comes with CS4. And for some strange reason they added this option to Photodownloader CS4, IMO that energy could have been used better...
However as per Ramón, using this way is also in my opinion not the best way to work. If you don't want or have a card reader (again, not wise :-) ) then only download image from the camera and after this disconnect the camera and use the camera menu itself to format the CF card and start with a fresh and empty CF card.
BUT, don't do this before you have checked if the files you have copied to the computer are OK to open and again a wise thing would be to first make a back-up (if you study the downloader options a little you will see that this is also an option you can (or in fact should) use.

I have about 8000 feet of very old home movies I am going to get scanned by one of the many companies out there that provide this service. Some will scan and dump DV format, other will dump HDV format.
Since I'm not doing the capture and I want to use FCP to edit and do the final composing what are the advantages/pitfalls of the different formats? I am a nuibe when it comes to FCP and video editing for that matter but it appears, at least to me from what I've read, that DV works with FCP better for editing as it is true frame by frame reproduction. HDV on the other hand I can only edit the i-Frames and I believe I need to do a transcode or something on that order to work with it FCP. Is this true?

I think you should make the most of this situation and go with Studio X's suggestion to DVCPRO HD and find a way to archive to tape or Blueray for backup. You will like the all I frame editing. If you can only find HDV 1080i you will be able to down convert with a rental Sony HDV camera to DV. Edit now in DV and have HDV on mini-dv tape for your family’s future needs. This is a no brainier. HDV is only the beginning of highly compressed formats to come and it really looks beautiful. HDV is a great acquisition method. Plus you can have HDV captured to DVCPRO HD. Have one reel done at the local place and see for yourself.

Importing a AVCHD movie from the Panasonic TZ20

I have bought a Panasonic TZ20 but the manual mentions that the AVCHD format from Panasonic is not supported by Mac !!!! How can I import a AVCHD movie to store in Full HD on my Macbook Pro using the SD card or USB cable? Is the issue the OS or iPhoto ? What about iMovie, is there a version that supports this format (Final Cut Pro is not a not a cheap solution) ?
