Is MS Silverlight plug-in truly incompatible with pre-Intel-chip Macs?

I am on a PowerPC G5.   I'm in need of running a browser plugin called Silverlight from Microsoft.  The download site warns of incompatibility on pre-Intel-chip Macs, but then it lets me download it anyway.  Afterwards, though, I can't make it do anything.  Someone told me there's a software patch to get around this.  But they didn't know the name of it.  Can anyone here confirm there's nothing more I can do, short of borrowing or buying a newer machine.

With SilverLight, Microsoft attempted to create their own version of what a replacement for Flash could be - but not to universal acclaim. You can read more about it here:
http://silverlight.net/
So, if you go to any sites that have been designed for this new Silverlight stuff, you can download the plug-in from here (but make certain that you are downloading SilverLight v.1.0 for OS X (10.4.8 upwards) if you are using a PPC Mac, but even this will not work with Safari 4. Version 2 only works with Intel Macs and does work with Safari 4/5. The solution is to download and install the latest version of Flip4Mac, which now includes a Silverlight component:
http://dynamic.telestream.net/downloads/download-flip4macwmv.htm
But the latest news is that Microsoft will probably abandon Silverlight in favour of HTML5:

If I must replace it where do I get an older version?
    Thanks

Firefox '''4 '''versions '''and later do not run on a PowerPC Mac''' and require at least OS X 10.5 and an '''Intel Mac'''.
The latest''' supported''' version for your os is '''3.6.26''' , your are fully updated.

  • Can a 2006 iMac with an Intel chip run OS X Mavericks?

My daughter has a 2006 iMac with an Intel chip and 3 gigs of RAM. She's been told it can't run Mavericks. Is this true? Or, is there something missing from her configuration we can add to enable Mavericks? Thanks!

Hi, Ralph. That's very helpful. I did look and discovered that Apple lists my daughter's iMac from 2006 as not able to run Mavericks.
I'll be looking at it later, when I have it in front of me, and I'm going to look for EFI firmware, and at least the latest OS it can run. But it looks like a new Mac is in her future, considering her web use includes streaming video. And because the security updates issue for older Macs is a concern.
    Thanks for your help!

    yes
However, if your Mac has only Firewire 800 ports, you need an adapter such as one of the following to connect your FW400 external iSight:
    • This Firewire 400-800 cable can work:  http://store.apple.com/us/product/H7041ZM/A (I use this one.)
    • Some report that this low-priced alternative cable works:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812189097
    • To use your iSight's FW400 6pin-6pin cable, you can use a 6pin-9pin adapter like one of these:

  • Is there a conflict with the Intel chip and certain web content?

    Just curious about something...
Somewhat new to OSX...I'm noticing that certain video content,(specifically Comedy Central) won't play for me in Safari, or Firefox browsers. I have Windows Media Player 9, but the plug in or application won't launch when these clips come up. I've noticed on some Power PC machines the clips play in Safari and appear formatted for Quick Time.(Despite the site saying they're designed to play in Media Player 9) Is there some preference that I don't know about? Also how do I install and uninstall plugins for these browsers? Or is it just the Intel chip...I haven't had a problem with any other site but this one.
    Thanks.

Web content not displaying will never be a hardware issue with any computer. You must install the plugins necessary to view it. All plugins are Universal now, except Windows Media, but you can get the Universal beta.
Windows Media - either use Ho Lee's suggestion or download Flip4Mac Universal beta (look on Google).
Real Media - get RealPlayer 10 Universal Binary.
The Flash Player and Quicktime should already be installed. Make sure you have all Apple updates as well.

  • Recommended HD Camcorder to use with non intel based mac?

I have been looking for an HD camcorder that is compatible with my mac. I was leaning towards the Canon Vixia HG20 but don't want to invest in something that will not work with my computer. Does anyone have any suggestions? Will the Canon Vixia HG20 work with my system? I don't have an Intel based mac.
    _Here are my specs_
    System: OSX 10.5.8
Processor: Dual 1.8 GHz Power PC G5
    Memory: 3 GB DDR SDRAM
    Software: Imovie 8.0

I went out and got the Canon HV30 camcorder and imovie is not recognizing it... anyone know if i need to do anything special to get it working?

  • Is firefox 5.0 compatible with non-intel based mac systems?

I downloaded 5.o previously this year & it wouldn't work because after downloading I discovered that it would only work with Intel based Mac systems. Has this changed? I don't want to go thru the download process again if it won't work.
    Thanks.

No. as of Firefox 4.0 and newer from Mozilla you need both OSX 10.5+ and Intel.
Either you can still use Firefox 3.6.18as you are using (3.6.19 will be coming in some 5 weeks) http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
Or use a third party version built for the old PPC.

  • HT5271 What's the best Flash player to use with a (pre-Intel) G5 Mac OS 10.5.8 using Safari 5.0.6?

I'm using my wife's old G5 running OS 10.5.8 and Safari 5.0.6. Being denied access to streaming video sites like Netflix because of out-of-date flash player. Is there any newer iteration I could download that wouldn't be counterproductive (by disabling what does work now on Hulu and YouTube, etc). I gather that Adobe may have jettisoned the non-Intel Macs. I can't even find the specs on this G5's player. It doesn't show up as a plug-in on System Preferences' Network list, as it does on my MacBook Pro. Any options you can suggest would be appreciated. Thanks.

(If you are running a PPC Mac with Flash Player 10.1.102.64 and are having problems with watching videos on FaceBook or other sites, contributor Texas Mac Man suggests the following solution which fools the site into thinking that you are running the latest version:)
Download this http://www.steelbin.com/FPforFBPPC.zip to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work.

  • Graphite base station not working with my Intel Based Mac Mini and iPhone.

My Airport Express died after 2 years of use. I had to resort to plugging in my old but still functioning Graphite Airport base station. Since the set up assisant on my Mac mini does not work with the older base station, I used my G4 400 tower to set it up. I got it working and tested the connection. On to testing my iPhone. It sees the new network. Password is entered and the wifi icon shows full signal strength, but does not connect to the web. Next I try my Mac mini out on the new network and it too sees the network, but does not connect to the web. I double check the older G4 and the connection is still strong and fast. I shut the G4 down thinking that maybe the Graphite can only support one computer at a time, and the Mac mini and iPhone still can't connect to the web. I'm not sure what to do with this one. Is there a setting that I need to use? As far as security goes, the Graphite base station was set up with a WEP password. Any help would be great
    Message was edited by: Soriano

I suggest using AirPort Admin Utility (version 4.2) to check the base station settings and change them, if necessary. (AirPort Admin Utility should be able to configure a Graphite base station from a computer running Mac OS X 10.4, even though AirPort Setup Assistant can't.)
In the Network pane of AirPort Admin Utility, please make sure that "Distribute IP addresses" and "Share a single IP address (using DHCP and NAT)" are checked, and that everything else is unchecked. I am assuming that the Graphite is the only router in your local network and that there are no computers connected via Ethernet.
The Access Control pane of AirPort Admin Utility should list either all of the relevant AirPort ID's or nothing. You can find the AirPort ID of an OS X computer by looking at System Preferences>Network>Show:AirPort>AirPort.
The Internet pane of AirPort Admin Utility should be set in accordance with your Internet provider's requirements. Most likely, it should be set to Connect Using:Ethernet and Configure:Using DHCP.
After verifying the settings, power down the computers, base station and cable or DSL modem for a few minutes, then start them up sequentially, leaving time for each to get fully up and running: first the modem, then the base station, and finally the computers.
The network preferences on the Mac Mini and the iPhone are also relevant. I assume that the preferences are unchanged from those that worked with the AirPort Express.
    I hope this helps.

  • I have an iMAC G5 with NO Intel chip. Can I download FF4?

My iMAC G5, purchased in 2005, has a PC processor - - not an INTEL processor. I had FF4 installed and downloaded and installed FF5 which will not operate on this system. How can I download and install FF4? jimal3

If it is a major hassle to drill the holes and run the cabling, you might want to take a look at a pair of Ethernet powerline adapters.
One adapter plugs into an AC outlet near your "main" router and a short Ethernet cable connects the devices. At the iMac end, another adapter plugs into an AC outlet near the Mac and a short Ethernet cable connects the adapter and iMac together.
The "psuedo" Ethernet signal is transmitted over the AC power lines. Works just fine as long as everything is on the same main electrical circuit.
But, an Ethernet cable is the "best" way to do this, so if you can, that's the route to take.

  • Need help with iMac intel desktop - Mac mail consistently going OFFLINE

I need help with Mac mail - it is frequently going "offline" and requesting me to "take all accounts online". My internet is working. It's been checked, checked and checked. Sometimes it just takes a reboot of the system and the modem to kick it in and make the little triangle symbol go away, but should I have to reboot daily? I have the Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 installed. Is there a bug here or am I supposed to upgrade to Mavericks? Any help is most appreciated.

For me this is an issue caused by my email service provider.  When they are slow to respond or to accept the password Mail takes that as a password rejection, and prompts me to reenter password, and eventually goes offline.

  • Powerbook with a intel chip.

    Hi guys,
Would it be possible to put a intel chip in my powerbook so it more or less works like a Macbook pro?? Or is that out of the question?

But I would still be gratefull for an answer!

  • What's incompatible with 10.6.5?

After using the 10.6.5 Combo Updater to upgrade my Mac Pro from 10.6.4 to 10.6.5, I was greeted by the new release with this message:
    "Incompatible software
"Some of the software on your computer is incompatible with this version of Mac OS X. Because this software may cause problems with your computer, it has been removed.
"During installation, your printing and scanning software was upgraded to Snow Leopard–compatible versions, if upgrades were available. Any incompatible versions of that software were removed.
"For more information about incompatible software, see this Apple Support article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3258."
My home folder has a newly created "Incompatible Software" folder containing an RTF file with the same message but nothing else.
I scanned the year-old Apple support article, and none of the incompatible software is on my Mac.
How do I determine what software has been removed?
    -- Ward

Ok so the move worked out well. the only thing is that when I use the log out in the File pull down it takes for ever for the log in screen to appear, its all blue for like 2 minutes then it finally comes up and works like its suppose to, but its slow to appear. The only other draw back is that my original 30 Apple HD display wont play the HD movies I bought in iTunes unless I put it in Standard mode, this is a HDCP restriction, as I have it hooked up with the mini port cable ($99) so does that mean if I hook it up with the supplied cable for the HDMI it will play them???? Haven't tried it yet. But that's bogus man, I want my money back for the movie purchase, as it worked with my G5 Desktop and G4 PB but not on the new intel Mac Mini mid 2010, partially the whole reason to get a new computer...... come on apple this is just plain ole stealing money and writing a program to block access.... bad form and bad Kharma... no different than disappearing ink....

  • Verizon Westell 327 Moden not capatible with new Intel AirPort card

After spending a lot of time with Verizon and Apple on the phone Verizon states that their modem/wireless is not compatible with the new Intels for a wireless connection. Apparently they have had a lot of phone calls and know what the problem is (software problem). So I've given up and was wondering if I purchased either the Airport Express or Airport Extreme and hard wired it up to my worthless Westell modem whether I could connect wirelessly that way.
    iMac 20" Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Welcome to Discussions, Michelle!
Check the bottom of the Westell for the model number to see if it needs a firmware update (it might not need one).
From what I can see, IF your Westell is one of the models that needs a firmware update, rather than trying to find a Mac version of the update, it would be quickest to use a windows computer to download the update and install it to the Westell. Firmware is an alteration to hardware only, and there is no interaction with software. None of the firmware update belongs on the iMac, nor on a windows computer either - after the installation to the Westell is completed the installer can be deleted from the computer.
You already know how to get the update from Dell, and it's also available from Verizon, and from Bell South as near as I can tell.
You could always demand from Verizon that they mail you a Mac-compatible firmware upgrade for the Westell (again, if it needs it) on a CD, but that might take longer than it's worth. Perhaps you could even demand a replacement wireless router that's up-to-date for Intel-based Macs.
From what I can see searching around just a bit about the issue, it appears that there can be several different issues involved in setting up the Westell with an Intel-based Mac. At least if you can determine whether yours is one that needs the firmware update or not, then you'll be that much closer to getting the iMac to work with it.
