Is my 30 iPod Classic Dead ?
My 30GB iPod Classic is completely dead. It no longer is recognized when connected via USB. It will not take a charge from a wall charger, and it does not respond to the reset (Menu/Select Buttons). I also disconnected/reconnected the battery in the hopes that would reset it. Nothing, just a blank screen. The issue began after being accidently disconnected from a USB connection while charging. The screen has been dark ever since.
Any thoughts on what the problem is? Battery ? Display ? Are there any diagnistics I can do ? Thank you in advance!
Try a known good charging cable. Check the dock connector for fluff. If you see any tease out carefully using something non conductive like a sliver of thin card or plastic. Canned air is useful too,
If you can get the screen working and it responds to reset commands then see Corrupt iPod classic.

I bought my 80GB Ipod classic from amazon about a month ago. I have had few problems with it apart from the odd time that the screen has gone distorted with lines on it when watching tv shows.
I was watching a TV show yesterday and went to rewind and watch a part again and none of the buttons worked.
The battery charge was over half full. I decided to leave it a bit and charged it up anyway. Now the screen is completely blank though the backlight seems to be permanently on and all buttons are totally unresponsive.
I have tried toggling the hold button and doing the menu + play button restore but nothing is happening. is my Ipod dead?its ok. the backlight wore the battery out. and when i charegd it again its working

so my ipod classic has been behaving erratically off and on for a while - yesteday it was saying it was playing but no sound, buttons unreponsive etc - and so I have tried to reset it (toggle the hold button and menu/click together) but it just keeps on failing to start up. The apple logo is just stuck on the screen and it sounds like the disc is spinning then it stops and this goes on and on until after a while it turns itself off. I tried connecting it to the computer but it did not appear on the desktop or in itunes.
Is there anything else I can do before chucking it in the bin?
3 years of light use doesn't really seem a lot for a supposedly quality productI just read another thread on this forum for someone having a similar issue and a recommendation was to check out the ipod's stats in diagnostic mode.

My new ipod classic does not work anymore! The music stopped and the display is dead. What now, besides calling support? Useless to say my PC didn't recognize the Ipod anymore either.
Anton, I wish I could help. I had an old iPod Classic (60 KB) as a gift but it went dead, I dropped it a few times accidentally, and it sat carefully saved until I had sufficient resources, energy and time to get the matter addressed. In my case, I actually took the thing (after making sure it was charged) to an Apple store and one of the geniuses at the genius bar at the back of the store took it and did a few things (unseen and un-noted) with his fingers and handed it to me with a sly smile. Voila, the thing was functional. I got a re-functionalized iTunes account and store access when I bought my iMac. I did lose a few tunes along the way because it didn't recognize my new iMac as the source (my old dead PC laptop), but I have a more functional memory than the iPod and recovered them all in other ways. The whole thing is humming better than ever. At over 11 gb full, I have 4.2 days worth of portable listening. Be patient; it took me four years to get musical nirvana in a pocket, but you'll get there faster. Call support.

My Ipod classic 160gb is dead,It only responds when I plug it in to cpu via usb cable then the screen blinks.When I try to reset it the Apple logo appears but the apple logo blinks on and off to as long as i hold the buttons down,when i realease the reset buttons it just blinks back and fourth to the blank gray screen,it worked fine yesterday night this morning its tanked.is this unit completely dead or can something be done at home?

For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
Tips
a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)

Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Ipod Classic 160GB dropped dead
My 1,5 year old Ipod classic 160GB just dropped dead yesterday. Nothing happened to it, I was listening music just before going to theater, I left it on my desk, I came back, it didn't boot up. I've tried to reset it 500 times, nothing works.
The only way to get the screen to do anything more than just being blank is to connect it to my laptop or pc, with the connector cable. It doesn't function as a seperate harddisk anymore, it can't be reached or found, the only thing it does is showing an apple logo on the screen (like the one in reset) for less then a second, then turning of the screen again, and then showing it again, repeating this process forever.
I doubt it any of you guys know how to fix this, but has anyone had experience with anything like this before?
And does anyone know how apple deals with this? Yes I'm a couple of months over my gaurantee, but it can't be possible that a premium brand multimedia player like an Ipod (and an expensive one with that)just drops dead out of nowhere, after 1,5 year of very carefull use? I've never dropped it even once, it has always had a protection sleeve.I've had a friend of mine take a look at it today. He runs on a Mac but connecting the Ipod doesn't do anymore then on my windows machine.
However, when we tried it with a firewire connection cable (instead of the normal type cable via usb 2.0) my Ipod was able to reset and even boot. I could listen to music, browse my stuff and the like, however as soon as I unplug, my Ipod is dead as can be. I've tried to make it charge for several hours with no effect.
So it seems my accu is dead, but the rest of my Ipod is ok. I'm gonna check what a replacement accu will cost me and if Apple will fund this or if I'm gonna have to pay for the failing hardware at my local Apple retail point.
*So trying firewire connection cable didn't do much for me apart from knowing that my accu is done for, but it might help others out here.* -

My 80GB Ipod classic is completely frozen. It was fine, plugged into a speaker dock and then I got a new speaker dock and put it on and it immediately died. I can't do the "5 R's" because I can't get any response from it at all, the screen is completely black. It isn't showing up in Itunes or in Windows. Is the battery dead or something more serious? If it is a dead battery how do I go about replacing it?

I had my ipod classic charged and believed the battery to be almost full when i tried to turn it on. like yours, no response and completely dead. i plugged it in and left it for 10 mins...nothing! not even a charging sign on the screen. then i heard if the battery is completely dead you may need to charge if for an hour or so before it comes back to life - thats what i did and its back to life.
if yours is still not working prob a battery problem - you can send it to ipod to replace the battery or you can buy them online and change them yourself (look it up in google) -
30 GB iPod Classic, Left channel is dead
The left channel of my 30 GB iPod Classic has fizzled. It appears to be a hardware issue. At rare moments -- if I jiggle the wire connecting the iPod to my car stereo -- it may come alive again for a song or two. But most of the time, it's out.
Has anyone had this problem? Can it be fixed? Or does the repair cost so much that it's cheaper to buy a new one? My Apple Care Protection Plan does not cover the iPod, only my iMac Core Duo.
Charlesdo a reset.. PUSH AND HOLD the middle button and the menu button AT THE SAME TIME for 10 seconds.. this may take a few trys and it works best if hooked to power..

IPod Classic synchronises and works in car but otherwise is dead
I have an iPod Classic 30GB which synchronises with my Mac's iTunes perfectly well, and when I plug it into my car (bmw 1-series with iPod control via satnav) I can play my music. However, when the iPod is not connected to the Mac or car it is unuseable, with an almost-dark, locked screen. I've tried restoring it via iTunes but this hasn't helped.

Here's where I believe they made a mistake. I have 40+ - (actually almost 50 now - I'm an old geezer who has large jazz album collection )years worth of jazz and classical music (very little rock or pop, not my thing). I purchase a lot - more than most teenagers, I imagine, since I have a full time job - of music through iTunes store. My iPod classic 160 is pretty full. I listen probably an average of 4 hours per day while at work (with headphones).
I will receive my Fiio x5 tomorrow. If I like it, then, buying music through iTunes store will no longer be more convenient than any other source. So, I'll not only NOT be buying an iPod in the future, I won't be buying any more music through them.
That's going to cost them between 100 - 500 dollars a year. Nice play Shakespeare. -

ThanksIf it is six month old, bring it in to Apple Store for the Genius to have a look, they may get you a replacement if it is not water damaged since it is under warranty.

IPod Classic not being recognized by iTunes
Okay, so I've had an iPod Classic (30 gb) for a while now, and it stopped working for some unknown reason. The thing that's happening is that it's not recognized by the computer at all; once I plug it into the USB drive, the computer says that there's a USB device that isn't recognized. iTunes doesn't pick it up, and with that in mind, I can't reformat it at all. I know for a fact that it's not the cable that is faulty because I've used it with a friend of mines iPod, and even ON my computer, so this is a bit puzzling....
To make things worse, the battery is completely dead, and when I plug it in, this weird symbol appears on the screen.... it doesn't look like a normal "recharging" symbol. It appears more like this one:

It also RANDOMLY begins charging.... although I'm aware of this because while the iPod is connected, the battery icon is green with the little thunderbolt flashing, I believe..... I'm not sure, it's only done that once so far, but I made sure to check that if it was even at all charging, it was still not identified by the computer or iTunes. Sounds like you've got a few issues going on there... If your device is not recognizing the iPod, than you could have an issue with the drivers on the PC which maybe a uninstall and reinstall of iTunes COULD fix...
However, based on what you're also saying about the icons on the screen you may have a device issue... Can your iPod's screen be found on this page?

As the image you're trying to display is this one of those under the low charging icons, which may be normal... But if you're having other issues by the iPod just stopping then that's why I say your iPod may be having an issue... Plus the version of the iPod that you have is one of the original ones which have been discontinued for a while now.
If you can't find a resolution but want this device, try iResQ.com they offer some great services and buy users old iPods to fix ones like yours...
Otherwise you might have to bite the bullet and get a new device.
