Is my 37 month old MacBook Battery ready to be replaced?

I run primarily on AC (with battery installed of course).
But I may need to run on battery a bit in the coming weeks, and I see my MB (May 2006) battery status as this:
Charge Information:
Charge remaining (mAh): 1463
Fully charged: Yes
Charging: No
Full charge capacity (mAh): 1526
Originally I think the full charge capacity was like 5100 or??
Can I calibrate and 'improve' this battery or is it time to replace?
Thanks!

Calibrating does not improve a battery. It synchronizes the battery status reporting with the actual capability of the battery. Your full charge capacity is very low, about 27%. You didn't list the charge cycle count but if you have only used the unit on AC it is probably very low. Batteries need to be used to keep them in good shape. How much run time will this one give you? If it's less than you need, it's time for a new battery.

  • Battery in 2-month old MacBook Pro seems to be losing charge faster.

The battery in my 2-month old MacBook Pro seems to be losing charge more quickly.  Also does not charge to 100% as it used to when new.

    Hi A,
You have 3 months of free AppleCare phone support, and a 1 year hardware warranty. If I was concerned about anything on my new MBP, I'd contact Apple.

  • My Mail program has gone south on Leopard on my 27-month old Macbook. I can't send, even though the server details are correct. I tried reinstalling from the install DVD - but no go: no longer compatible, evidently.. What to do?

My Mail program has gone south on Leopard on my 27-month old Macbook. I can't send, even though the server details are correct. I tried reinstalling the Mail program from the install DVD, but no go; apparently that two-year old Mail is no longer compatible with my up-to-date Leopard. I tried deleting the account (hotmail) from Mail and setting up a different account (Yahoo). After loading all the inbox two things happened: first, I still couldn't send, and second, when I closed the Mail window the whole inbox then disappeared and doesn't come back. Although I couldn't reinstall the Mail program from the install DVD, would it still be possible to reinstall the whole system from that DVD? If I do, will I lose files or will there be another problem since that DVD is now over two years old?
Thanks for any suggestions; they will be much appreciated.
P.S. I've just noticed that now I can't change the desktop picture: I go through the motions in Preferences, but the new picture doesn't appear on the desktop. Is there a systemic problem?

You are waiting for an apology to something that happened over a year ago? Really? This is why there is a manager in the store. You have a problem with an employee you speak to the manager. Just like you did on the phone. You would have gotten your apology in July 2013.
Here is the information about your upgrade fee.
    Upgrade Fee
It is because when you have a problem you (customers) go running to the store and want to take up the time of the reps to fix it. Other carriers have third parties that deal with technical support and those locations are few and far between. VZW provides this directly through their stores. Also, when you subsidize a $650 and pay $200 VZW has to pay $400. Your monthly service fee doesn't begin to scratch the surface of paying that back. Not with all the money that is put into the network and its improvements.
Then over a year later you get someone on the phone who apologized and offered to waive the fee on your phone and you didn't take it? That offer won't come down the pike again.
One thing you should know is that all these employees are people and as such they sometimes come off cross. I doubt that you speak to everyone so sweetly all the time. Cut them a little slack and put this whole thing behind you after 15 months. Either upgrade with VZW or move on.

  • X Through battery icon, no LED light on MagSafe, 2 month old Macbook Pro

This all started this afternoon. I noticed a black X through the battery icon in the upper tool bar, then noticed that there was no LED light on the MagSafe charger. The fan on my computer was also constantly running. This computer is only TWO months old. Since day one I have run the battery down before re-charging. This should have properly calibrated the battery.
Is there some simple fix for this or do I have to take time out of my life during the holiday season, trek to the mall and pray that someone at the genius bar has time to resolve this issue? Hoping there is a saint here somewhere to help me out

    MamaGG:
    Call Apple Care (800) 275-2272.
Your computer is warranted for 1 year for Hardware and for 3 mos, I believe, for free phone tech support.
They may have you take it to the Apple Store near you for the "genius" to work on it.
Have you Serial Number handy. Locate it from the "Apple Icon" drop down menu on the left and side of the upper title Bar and open up "About this Mac" and open up "more info" and then "Hardware".
They have the best support in the industry.
Meanwhile consider getting the Apple Care Add on package for the MB Pro. It extends this Hardware coverage for 3 years and provides free Apple Care Phone Tech support for that time.
I have had it on all my Macs which I have owned. The phone support is well worth it.

  • One month old macbook pro got hang(freeze) once, and kernel panic once: should i need to take some actions or its ok??

my macbook pro 13.3 (OS XLion 10.7.4) is one month old, few days ago  it got freezed(hanged) at that time only 2 apps were running google chrome and xcode, i pressed power button (hold it for few seconds) to restrat.
Today when i opened the lid(as my mac was on sleep for last one hour- no apps except finder was running) i saw an error like this "mac encountered an error hold your power button for few seconds to restart......blah blah..something in other languages too", i think some where it used the word "kernel panic".
After restart mac said "your computer restarted because of a reason", below i have copy pasted the reason.
Please suggest me its(this behavior is) okie or should i take it to apple center?, also to note i have never played any game on my mac. Can any body suggest me why this kernel panic happened by seeing the reason below.
Now i am afraid to leave my mac at sleep with unsaved data and that was the exact reason i shifted from windows to mac.

I have had a 15" Late 2011 model MBP since December and have never had a kernel panic.
If I do I would take it in for a check up.

  • I need to upgrade my Mac, is there anyway I can swap my 4 month old Macbook Pro for a iMac or something with a bit more kick? (for video editing)

I would ideally like to upgrade to a new model iMac, as they and my Macbook Pro 15inch, only 4 months old go for about the same price.
Is there any way I can do this through Apple or would I have to go about it in another way. I would like to minimise spending and ideally would not like to buy a completely new computer. What I'm asking, really, is if I can trade the two?

No you cannot trade in. Sell you MBP on eBay for the best value. The best 'bang for your buck' currently offered directly from Apple is their certified refurbished machines:

  • My four-month-old macbook pro's battery when fully charged is now down to 2 hours life from 7...in the last week. Why?

I bought my macbook pro 13" about four months ago and have been in love with it ever since - especially as compared to my old PC laptop, the battery stays cool and lasts forever when I am working. Best charge was 7 hours. However, in the last week I have noticed the battery suddenly becoming hot when I unplug the charger, and the best length of time I can get on a full charge is 2 hours.
I have made sure all the settings are for prolonged battery life - which they've been since I first set up - and turned off all programmes running in the background, but this has not made any difference. I have been using iMovie a lot lately which takes a lot of battery which is probably why I didn't notice the battery being low as it automatically seems to make the battery slump to 2 hours when it's on. It's off now, and my battery won't improve.
I have also now followed the instructions (below) about calibrating, but this has had no effect. My housemate bought the same model a month ahead of me, uses it probably slightly less, but his is still 7 hours for a charge.
    Is my battery faulty?
    Calibration instructions used:
PowerBook G4 (15-inchDouble-Layer SD), MacBook (all models), MacBook Pro (all models), and MacBookPro (17-inch) (all models)
Thebattery calibration for the PowerBook G4 (15-inch Double-Layer SD) and anymodel of MacBook or MacBook Pro has been updated because of a new batteryreleased with this computer. With these computers, follow these steps tocalibrate your battery:
Plug in the power adapter and     fully charge your PowerBook's battery until the light ring or LED on the     power adapter plug changes to green and the onscreen meter in the menu bar     indicates that the battery is fully charged.
Allow the battery to rest in the     fully charged state for at least two hours. You may use your computer     during this time as long as the adapter is plugged in.
Disconnect the power adapter while     the computer still on and start running the computer off battery power.     You may use your computer during this time. When your battery gets low,     the low battery warning dialog appears on the screen.
At this point, save your     work.  Continue to use your computer; when the battery gets very low,     the computer will automatically go to sleep.
Turn off the computer or allow it     to sleep for five hours or more.
Connect the power adapter and     leave it connected until the battery is fully charged again.
Tip:When the battery reaches "empty", the computer is forced into sleepmode. The battery actually keeps back a reserve beyond "empty", tomaintain the computer in sleep for a period of time. Once the battery is trulyexhausted, the computer is forced to shut down. At this point, with the safesleep function introduced in the PowerBook G4 (15-inch Double-Layer SD)computers, the computer's memory contents have been saved to the hard drive. When power is restored, the computer returns itself to its pre-sleep stateusing the safe sleep image on the hard drive.

  • Getting the run around from apple regarding my defective 4 month old MacBook.  What options do I have?

Purchased a MacBook pro 4 months ago.  After 1 week, wavy lines showed up on the monitor and the genius bar deemed the "mother board" to be defective and a new MacBook was issued to me.  This Monday,  the monitor went blank and again brought it to the genius bar.  The tech stated the monitor had to be replaced and he could do it later that day.  Now it's three days later and the computer is still not fixed and another part has to be ordered which wont be in for another three days.
Besides the awful communication Apple has shown me (waiting on hold for 20 plus minutes to get through to the genius bar) I am beyond appalled at the level of quality with the MacBook.  I realize Apple has a cult following but I have never owned a computer with so many problems, especially in the first 4 months.  I am loyal to Apple as I have both an iPad and an iPhone but this is definitely testing my loyalty.  My question to these readers is how can I address my concerns to Apple?
Thanks for reading and thanks for your help.

It sounds like the store tried to do you a favor and it blew up in their face. In many stores, a screen replacement would be sent to a regional depot for repair. This takes shipping both coming and going, plus repair time in the depot.
If they encountered an additional bad part, and had to order it in, that may take the quoted three days at the depot or at the store. Then additional Repair time.
I think you have been very unlucky, but I don't think you are being abused.
I remember when local repair places had rooms full of spare parts, but that is becoming less true in every business. ( I remember when people did not have computers in their homes, as well, but that is not helpful in this situation.)

  • Six-month-old MacBook Pro acting up.

    Hello,
My mid-2012 13-inch MacBook Pro is running very slow and hot now. Sometimes, it speeds up a little but it msotly is very slow. It booted up to a sort of "question mark/folder" logo on Friday - right after I brought it home from AppleCare - but now it's working, but only barely. This Mac is relatively new - I purchased it about six months ago - and seems to be in a good condition (no scratches, dents, etc. though that probably doesn't mean much). I don't think I use it very heavily at all. I use it for school and that's about it - the most it's subjected to is the daily commute to and from school, which I think laptops are supposed to be able to handle. However, the computer has a history of technical issues, all of which had to be solved by the same Apple Authorized Service Center that was mentioned earlier:
July 19th - Same problem as this time. SATA cable was replaced.
September 3rd - Severe lag and overheating with one application running. Hard disk and front hard disk bracket were replaced.
October 4th (Friday) - Again, same problem as this time. Operating system was re-installed.
What is wrong with my Mac? Could this be a defective unit by any chance?
Any help would be much appreciated. :-)
    Specifications:
    Mid-2012, 13-inch MacBook Pro
Processor: 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5

  • 1 month old macbook air - No Refunds or anything in Thailand !!

I bought a 13th inch brand new Macbook Air 1 month ago here in Thailand and just found out a few days that a new model was lunched. I hoped to get it changed for free and went back to one of the I studios here in Bangkok and saw right away that the same book as mine (the new one it didn't yet arrive in thailand) was price reduced of about 8000 THB (261 US - 196 EU) !!!! But they have no kind of refund service or anything !!!!!
Not even Apple online shop in Thailand ! All they told me was i should try contact the online shop in Malaysia - but whatfore??
Isn't that a poor service here in Thailand? Iknow same case in the US Apple would refund at least the amount of the 8000 THB or change it to a new Model-or i am wrong? At least Apple did so with a Iphone when the new came out - In the US...
I am a bit dissapointed at these point and wish Apple should push such Countries to deliver better Customer service to their great products

If it makes you feel better, the same thing would have happened in any other country.

  • Multiple Problems with 5.5 month old MacBook

Okay. I've had my MacBook since March 3rd of this year. I have a few problems with it. It's the 2GHz model with a "SuperDrive", 1GB of RAM and a 160GB HDD I added myself. I added it in May, well after my problems had begun.
My first problem is that the keyboard squeaks. This started about a week after I bought it. The spacebar and "Enter" keys begin to squeak after about 20 minutes or so of use.
The second problem is that the palm rest has been showing some discoloration, but not very noticeable.
Now for the real hardware problems.
First up, this problem is very random, sometimes the system will not boot right away. I mean, I'll press the power button and the screen will flicker. The little sleep/power light will come on and then nothing will happen for about 20 or 30 seconds. After that, the screen will light up and the sound will play and everything will work fine. Sometimes I will press the power button and nothing will happen. I have tried everything suggested in the help topics at this site and nothing has helped.
The second problem is that, occasionally, my iPods will act as if they are connecting to nothing. It only happened with my 80GB iPod. But tonight it happened with my 2G 4GB iPod mini. Both using different cables. This started tonight after experiencing the problem I mentioned above. The last time I had an iPod act like it was connected to nothing was right before the motherboard in that particular computer died.
So those two problems right there make me believe I have a faulty motherboard.
My third problem is with the "SuperDrive". Lately it has been having problems reading discs. Randomly, I will insert a disc and it will spin it.. then spit it back out. Again, randomly, it will sometimes take 3 or 4 tries before it will finally read the disc. I can try that same disc again a few days later and I will read it no problem. This happens with professionally pressed (store bought) discs and burned discs as well. Which leads me to the next issue with the optical drive. It can write CDs fine. But DVDs are another story. Any brand of disc from any manufacturer has the same result. This happens in Windows and OS X with a variety of software, including OS X's built-in software. I cannot burn a disc successfully over 2x. If I try to burn a disc over 2x, even at 4x, it fails. What happens is that, when the burn starts, it will spin the disc at 2x while burning for about the first 10% or so. Then it will spin up to full speed. If the disc is a video, after that point (which usually translates into about 15 minutes in with a 2 hour video), the movie will skip and stutter randomly on every DVD player I try to play the disc on. If it is data, more often than not, the disc will not successfully pass the verification process. If it does pass, only the "SuperDrive" will be able to read it and nothing else will. And usually when it does pass, if I am present for the entire verification process, I can hear the disc being spun up and down at varying speeds so it can read it.
The last time I had that happen was with a bad drive that failed at around the 6 month mark. My first DVD writer, so I didn't know then that it was the sign of a dead/dying/bad device.
The final problem has to do with the hinge on the screen. I'm sure anyone reading this is aware of how the MacBook opens. Well, on the rounded plastic on the hinge, that goes directly into the path of the exhaust fan when the screen is open.... the plastic is starting to slightly bubble and come part. It has also slightly changed color.
Now I really don't know what to do. I don't have a credit card, so if I call Apple Care I will have to argue with them to listen to my problems because they are not software related and, based on what I've read, they require a CC number to proceed with any help.
And the closest Apple Store is a 75 mile round trip away, so it is not reasonable to drive there. I also cannot drive there and leave the system there because I have no other computer until the middle of next week.
So, any advice would be great. Thanks.

    I'm definitely going to call.
However, its definitely not the hard drive causing the issues. The problems began before the drive upgrade and continued afterwards.
Besides, the discoloring plastic, iPods acting as if they're connected to nothing, and the DVD burner not being able to burn discs have nothing to do with the installed hard drive.
Neither would the random booting issues. If the hard drive was causing an issue, the system simply wouldn't boot.
I built many PCs before buying my Mac and had a couple of Windows laptops as well. I know enough about hardware to know that the problems I'm having now are completely unrelated to the drive upgrade.
I also live in California and I'm very aware of the consumer protection laws here as I had to research them and bring them up against HP when the motherboard in my HP system died. So I'm the last person they will be able to push around

  • My trackpad is not working, (4 month old macbook pro)

I have a 4 month brand-new macbook pro which is not heavily used at all, one day my trackpad is working fine, today it is moving around extremely erratically, switching from screen to screen, going to mission control with only one finger swipe etc. I cannot use it at all, I have to use a plug-in mouse. I have checked all my rpeferences for trackpad and nothing has changed. How do I fix this? PLEASE HELP!

Since you are under warranty, you best recourse and guarantee of results is to take it to an Apple store or repair facility.
    Ciao.
