Is my adapter bad, or is this normal? My Energy Saver Settings don't stay.

Folks:
I have a Apple Cinema Display using ADC. I am using a DVI to ADC converter to hook it up to my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. I don't care that I can NEVER put my Mac to sleep. I just want the screen to sleep when I tell it to! Up to now, it works intermittently on my Quicksilver G4 2002.
I'll set the preferences to 3 minutes before sleep on the screen. Wait 3 minutes, and poof! it'll sleep. Then hours or minutes later, it will wake that screen back up! OR.... hours later, I will stop using it, and leave it to sleep. Minutes later... many minutes later, hours later, it is STILL NOT sleeping. So, I go back to the preferences... I open up the energy saver for the screen and it STILL says 3 minutes, but it is NOT doing what the panel says. So... I move the slider around, maybe 1 or 2 minutes, then click show all, click back to make SURE.. it is still good. It is. I then leave it and it'll sleep. Yippie. It might behave for hours, then it forgets and am back to resetting the preference panel! WHY?!?!? I wish I could write an applescript utility to sneak in there every hour and reset the time to 3 minutes! HELP!???
Yesterday, the ADC/DVI thing forgot it was hooked up to the USB & cut power from my mouse & soundsticks.

If the suggestions in your previous thread didn't help(which include an AppleScript set as an iCal alarm), what exactly happened when you tried to use them?
It is possible to create an AppleScript tool which doesn't need to be called from iCal, but it may use up more CPU time. To do this, use the following code:
on idle
do shell script "pmset -a displaysleep 3" password "yourpass" with administrator privileges
return 3600 --one hour
end idle
Save this as an application; the Stay Open box may need to be checked.

  • HT4060 Need to plug adapter few times with no reaction tell finaly it starts charging .is this normal ?

The charging speed is ok but i need to plug the iPad to the included adapter few time with no reaction tell finaly it starts charging .is this normal ?

Hi. I would suggest carefully examining your cable at both ends where the cable connects with the USB Plug and other side where the cable connects to the Apple port. Making sure that there are no breaks in the insulation or any wires showing at all. It just may be an issue of replacing the apple cable, which you can order and easily have shipped to you.
Frayed connections on either ends can happen if someone trips over connected power cable and it gets yanked while still connected to ipad for example.
Another thing may be just simply doing as Diavonex suggested. And trying a different outlet. I would add trying a different outlet that is on a different circuit then the one you are currently using.
Only other possibilities besides a frayed cable, or a bad wall outlet, would be don't plug your adapter into some thin household extension cord with the three outlets on its far end as an extension point.
And possibly check for dirt in the adapter USB port side and corrosion on the adapters electric prongs. Also check your cable connectors for same kind've dirt and corrosion. Especially for gritty type dust that may have gotten into your connection points. Considering that you seem to be experiencing an intermittent power connection, I would really suggest checking and possibly cleaning very gently and carefully your adapters USB port, and your cables USB plug, which is where it seems you are having your connectivity issues.
if you experience this again i suggest just ordering a complete new Apple adapter and a new Apple cable. It is easier then cleaning the ports.
Lastly, How good is the quality of the electricity that your electric company provides? Any other troubles with other appliances or TV's, etc? It's only a tiny and slight chance but if you are experiencing other electrical intermittent problems then it may be remotely possible that the quality of electricity you are receiving from your provider is rather poor and that is responsible for your problems with your adapter.
Hope some of this helps you! Cheers!

My EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS lens has developed serious lens creep.  Is this normal or are seals bad or ?  I don't recall it being an issue at first.

Does it happen? You bet. But is it normal? No. However most zoom lenses of this type will creep sooner or later if you use it a lot.
Depending on how old it is, you may get Canon warranty to service it. They can tighten it up. My 24-105mm f4 L does that too.
I just live with it as this lens has seen a lot of duty.
This is actually a pretty nice lens. I was thoroughly impressed with the one I got to try.

  • Fan is alway running on my new dv7-4290us. Should I exchange for a new one or is this normal?

I just got my new dv7-4290us from the HP store and after a little while of playing with it, I noticed that the fan seems to always be running. It's not spinning very fast, just kind of a soft blowing or purring sound but audible for sure. Is this normal for this notebook or notebooks with quad cores and dedicated graphics? I called HP tech support and asked them if it was normal for the fan to run all the time, but they where kind of clueless with, 3 different guys giving me 3 different answers. I did mess around with some power management settings and the HP Thermal program but that didn't help. Turning off the fan always on setting in the bios just causes the fan to blow up every 20 seconds, so that is not a solution. There wasn't a bios update on the driver page, so I don't know about that as a fix. Otherwise everything seems to be functioning properly with no BSOD or lockups so far.  The computer doesn't seem to be running hot (core temps stay under 50°c under light load) and the fan doesn't sound unhealthy like it has a bad bearing or anything. I just want to know if the fan always running at a low speed thing is normal on these machines. From my expereince with notebooks the fan alway running is a sign that your system is not cooling properly, so I wanted to get a second opinion from fellow users before I go through the hastle of exchanging this for a new one.

Does this happen on AC power only?  There maybe an option in BIOS for 'Fan always on while on AC power'.

  • Just bought a new iMac and it is telling me it will take 27 hours to transfer documents from the old one!! Is this normal? Can I speed this up some how??

I just bought a new iMac and it says it will take 27 hours to transfer documents from the old mac! Is this normal? Can I speed this up??

If you are transferring with Wi-Fi or Ethernet and you have to transfer a lot of files, it's normal. Wi-Fi and Ethernet are the slowest methods to transfer files.
Instead, you can check if your old Mac has got a FireWire 800 port. If so, you can get a Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter and a FireWire cable, so the transfer will be done by FireWire, making the migration faster.
If you don't want to spend money, continue the migration. Another thing you can do is to get an external drive, make a Time Machine backup of your old Mac and use the backup to transfer your files to the new Mac. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

You can get a thunderbolt to firewire adapter. You can then get a firewire 400 to 800 cable and put the old computer in target mode. Then you can follow these instructions.

Choose migrate from other disk or volume.

  • Part of Screen Missing? Is this normal

On the left side of my screen it seems like there is a tiny column missing before the end of the screen.. theres also this blue line that ends the window... i dunno if this is normal it seems like the only osx needs to be pushed like a tiny nanometer to the left.. is this blue line normal.. is there a way to push it to the left? i already had to send my macbook pro in to repair for the cpu whine and i really dont want to again since last time my problem wasnt even fixed

It can be normal for the screen to look garbled just after you wake your MBP from sleep - but it should return to normal within a second or two, not stay that way for much longer. If it does, you may have bad video RAM, or a faulty cable leading to the display panel.
I'd run Apple Hardware Test to check the video RAM. If it doesn't find anything wrong, I'd still have it looked at, since certain types of defects (for example, a bad display data cable) cannot be detected by AHT.

  • The green LED  doesn't last and it switches to orange.  Is this normal?

I have not been keeping notice of the LED which lights when I connect my Mac Book Pro to power.  I just noticed that it lights green and then shortly turns orange.  Is this normal?  What could it mean?

It often takes a short time after the adapter is connected for the system to determine whether or not the battery needs charging and for the light on the adapter plug to display the appropriate color. This is normal.

  • Square traces of mouse pointer - Is this normal?

The macbook pro 13'' 2010 2.4ghz 4gb ram i use at work, when on the applications folder, leaves square traces of the mouse pointer. Is this normal? Its only visible with a bit of zoom (not the full 100% zoom, it starts being visible with just a tad). Is this normal? It only leaves square traces on that applications window. It doesnt leave them on the desktop etc... Is this normal at all???
Here is the video of it. Please, try to look further from the bad youtube conversion. It is still visible if you look carefully.

  • When I share a link (URL) only Apple computers receive the link. Others such as PCs and Blackberries get the message, but the field which should have the link is blank. Is this normal?  Why can I only send to Apple machines?

when I "share a link" (URL) using the pulldown menu in Safari, the email goes to all addresses I indicate, but only Apple computers receive the link. Others such as PCs and Blackberries get the message, but the field which should have the link is blank. Is this normal?  Why can I only send to Apple machines?

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.
