Is my AirPort Dead?

I believe my AirPort Extreme Base Station is dead. We purchased it about 2 years ago, it is the 802.11n model.
Here's the problem:
I do not get internet through the AirPort Extreme Base Station. Nor do any of the Macs in my household. We have kept the same settings in the router for the past two years, only recently have we had problems.
Any laptop in my house can get internet if we connect a ethernet cable directly to the modem, so it is not the modem or the ISP.
The AirPort Extreme Base Station does NOT show up in my AirPort Admin Utility, even if the base station is connected through my MacBook Pro's AirPort Card, so I cannot change any options.
A few things I've tried:
I've tried all sorts of resets: The button in the back, hard reset, unplugging it from the wall and the power plug, leaving it unplugged for several minutes to attempt to reset the DCHP, resetting the modem, etc.
After a hard reset, one of our MacBook's can connect to the base station and the internet but only for a maximum of two minutes.
I'm stumped on what to do. Usually I would think its some sort of setting issue, but we've never had a problem with our base station for the past two years, and we've kept the settings the same and never changed them. Only as of now have we had a problem. I'm starting to think that the AirPort base station is indeed busted...which aggrevates me that Apple charges $180 bucks for a product that lasts less than two years.
Any and All help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

U don't mention if you made any recent software updates...if YES, I personaly believe its the updates that screwed things up (ive already posted on other topics..plus MANY MANY ppl having connection issues since updating)... Problem seems to not only be with airport bases...airport cards also
Seriously hoping there will be an update SOON that will fix the airport card/bases issue.

Unfortunately, yes.  On the upside, your Time Capsule lasted about twice as long as normal.

  • IMac G5 Airport Dead

I have an iMac G5 that connects to the internet using an Airport Extreme (11G) router. this morning, the computer was showing that it was connected to our SSID, but I was unable to access the internet at all. Cycling the G5 airport on and off had no effect - I would connect to our SSID (which is not broadcast, by the way) but again was unable to access the internet. I tried the usual cycling the router and cable modem tricks and that also had no effect. So as my next troubleshooting step, I shut down the G5. After power up, airport would no longer recognize our network, or even detect the two networks my neighbors use. The router is working fine - I am sitting next to my G5 and typing this on my laptop with a solid connection. I also have no problem detecting the other networks. Any help getting this sorted out would be appreciated!

  • Airport dead...

After waking up and using my computer for 30 min. my airport died on me. Nothing changed, nothing was different, except I had no wireless connection.
The display still read full bars, it still showed I was connected but I got nothin.
So like any normal person I ran airport setup utility, disk utility (and repaired), clicked on the reset button (for one sec, not five) and yet still nothing. I even went through the airport help (yikes) and as usual, that did nothing for me.
So now I'm here looking for some aid.

I wouldn't recommend pushing the reset button on a Base Station as one of the first means of solving a connectivity problem. Doing so (for one second as you indicated) resets its admin password and wireless security key - unless you do nothing, then wait five minutes until the Base Station drops out of soft reset mode automatically and reverts to its previous settings. What you should do instead - pull power to the cable/DSL modem and the Base Station for a few minutes, then plug the modem back into power, then plug the Base Station back into power.
If that failed to work, the next step would be to connect your Mac directly to the modem to see whether you ISP's service is still working (as Vince asked about).

  • Can anyone recommend a good wireless receiver? Airport dead

My airport will only receive 56k speeds (see massive, 12,000 views+ thread which apple seem to be ignoring for more on this issue...). I've tried to shop around today for a wireless receiver to just plug into the USB port so i can disable the Airport altogether, but i'm really struggling to find a Mac compatible one. The only one i could find was one of those teeny tiny micro-sized USB plug-ins which are only really decent for very light web browsing. I need something which can download huge files without any trouble.
I'd really appreciate any help. I'm so frustrated by this internet issue i'm thinking of just ebaying the damned thing and never looking back.

    They have them at OWC

  • AirPort dead upon Wake from sleep

I am using a Mac Mini connected to a DSL modem to share its Internet connection over AirPort. I can initially connect to the AirPort network with my laptop, but after the Mini is put to sleep and wakes up its AirPort is no longer functional. The icon shows the grey airport bars with a black arrow indicating internet sharing, but it's not actually on. I choose "Turn off Airport" from the menu bar, but nothing happens. It continues to show that airport is on, but nothing is broadcasting (even my dumb wireless detection keyfob device shows no wireless signals in the vicinity). No amount of fiddling with the airport (through the menu bar, through internet connect, or System Prefs panel) will get it to turn off. Any ideas?

  • HT3728 airport not powering on

AirPort is plugged in, has been since the day we got it. Got a notification on the desk top this morning saying the computer hasnt been backed up in 50+ days, checked the AirPort, the light is not on. Unplugged it, nothing.
    Is my AirPort dead?

Most likely the problem is with your software. Just turn it on and restore it through iTunes if you haven't done so already. If that doesn't work, all I can say is to wait until the next version of 2.x.x comes out and see if problems persist. If they do, then you should probably call Apple and let them know.

  • Years Running Fine -- Now a world of problems

    5 p.m. Everything functioning fine.
Go to dinner and come back and no computers can connect to the internet via Airport.
If I plug my computer directly into the cable modem, no problems. I did resets on both, unplugged from outlet and restarted, etc...
Also, now when I go to try to network diagnostics my previous network is now gone (I assume from the reset.) But it won't let me recreate my old network with the same password -- it will only let me create a computer-to-computer network. It is totally screwy.
I did some auto updates a few days ago but I wouldn't think this is the cause because it has been running fine for two days.

If you did a complete reset, then all the settings would be gone, including the network name. If you have this problem in the future, I'd try unplugging it, waiting briefly, then plugging it back in again before you resort to a reset.
But it won't let me recreate my old network with the same password
Could you explain exactly what you try to do and what the results are at each step?
It would help a lot if you identified the model(s) of your networking gear. The advice you need may depend on those details.

  • Latest firmware update 6.3 and dead airport express basestation

My Airport Express basestation (aebs) is 13 month old. It suddenly went dead. No light, no reset, nothing.
    And maybe a coincidence:
It happened only 36 hours after I loaded the new 6.3 firmware update.
I wonder if anyone had the same experience regarding a dead aebs due to firmware update 6.3. At least - compared to the posts here - a dead aebs is not such a rare incident as one might wish it would.
      Mac OS X (10.4)

Exactly the same has happened to mine, although I don't recall doing a firmware update. Yesterday I just downloaded and installed iTunes 6.0.2 & QuickTime 7.0.4. However, when I came home from work this evening my Airport Express had no LED on as normal. It was cold and had obviously been off for sometime. The fuse it OK and it's just one month after the 1-year guarantee period. Sounds suspiciously like a plot to me....
What has Apple done to kill my Airport Express???

  • I recently replaced my dead airport router with a netgear91-5g router and synced it successfully to my Lexmark Pro 915 printer and my computer and yet when I try to print wirelessly I get the message: "printer not connected; printer offline".

I recently replaced my dead airport router with a Netgear91-5g router and synced it successfully to my Lexmark Pro 915 printer and my computer; yet when I try to print wirelessly I get the message: "printer not connected; printer offline". Lexmark support verified that my printer was connected to the new router and the problem was with the computer's printer configuration and they could reconfigure it online if I paid for their "Premium Support" services ($119 for one year, 3 fixes). I declined, feeling sure that this is something I could do if I knew how. Could it be an incompatability issue with OS 10.8.3?

You saved me $$$ that I can ill afford on my fixed income. I was very unhappy with the "support" from Lexmark... what a rip off!  Thank you dwb!

  • I think my airport express is dead but I dont know...help!

    hi there
on thursday night, i did a number of software updates (unrelated to airport express). anyway, on friday the airport express went down, so i thought that was simply some kind of software update, reset the computer but nothing worked.
so i have tried resetting the unit, unplugging it for a lengthy period of time and nothing gets my little light flashing again.
the reason i am unsure, is that when i do go to plug the unit back into a powerpoint, i see a very quick green flash which suggests the unit is ok, and i am wondering whether i am doing something wrong.
FYI, i am still relatively new to apples, having a powerbook for approx. 16 months although i still dont understand apples the way i did my old pc's.
is it simply the unit, in which case i'll go to my nearest apple store or is it me?
    please help.
    philip

Gail - the symptoms you describe are far less common, but I think you too have a dead Airport Express. Yes, a software update (or more specifically, a firmware update) gone wrong can easily turn a functional Airport Express into a doorstop.
Try doing a factory reset per:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044
If the symptoms persist - get a warranty replacement. Absolutely your Airport Express will be covered for this sort of problem if it is under warranty.

  • Friend suggested I use Airport Express to extend my network to fix dead spots, should I just plan on replacing existing Netgear and buy two AXn's?

I have a few dead spots around the house and I am seeking a good solution without pulling ethernet cable.  Reading this community it would seem best if going with Airport Express solution to replace my Netgear and pick up a couple of AXn's. Or perhaps Airport Extreme for base at cable model and AXn for extension?
I had assumed I could just configure one AXn and put it in the dead zone, but reading configuring roaming network indicates you need two. I was planning on adding Apple TV in extended zone does this change anything?

There are a number of possibilities of using multiple AirPorts to extend the wireless range of your network without using wires. Please check out this Apple Support article for more details.
Since your goal is to use wireless connections between routers, you will need two or more AirPort to accomplish this. Unfortunately, extending the Netgear by wireless will not work due to WDS compatibility issues between router manufacturers.

  • Apple Care replaced my dead, out-out-of-warranty Airport Express

Today, I became one of the hundreds (thousands??) of Airport Express users whose AE died just a few months out of warranty. I faithfully purchase Apple Care (3-year extended warranty) from Apple for every Mac I buy.
A few years ago, my graphite Airport died, and the Apple Care rep gladly replaced it due to my active Apple Care contract at that time. Today, I thought I would receive the same courtesy, thanks again to my TWO active Apple Care contracts that were in place well before I purchased the AE.
My initial Apple Care rep denied my request for a replacement AE, because, he argued, the AE was not purchased at the same time with a Mac. I explained to him the graphite Airport story above, and he dug his heels in deeper. I insisted that he send me up the food chain to a superviser, and after 4-5 min on the phone, the supervisor came on, apologized for his tech's mis-interpretation of policy, and authorized the replacement on the spot. He told me that his techs would have this clearly explained to them for future Apple Care contract holders who call up with a dead AE.
Extra info...I live near an Apple Store, and asked if I may go there and pick up the replacement. He said the decision would be up to the store management--if they had stock, etc. I said I wanted to take my chances and go up there, so he instantly made me an appointment with the genius bar within the hour. This Apple Care supervisor was a real pro. He made it clear that Apple Care covers an AE even if the AE is not purchased with a Mac. He also told me he would make a special request within my case report to the store for a stock unit. Bam! I walked in and got hooked up! Apple does take care of its customer (who might need to be a bit more persistant than need be at times) after all.
Good luck should you find yourself in the same boat I was in...By the way, I am posting this via my replacement AE on the same day, and I would swear it produces faster internet speed than the fried one!

    Hi, Steve
that's one of the good points of the forum here: having a lot of trouble the past few weeks with my iMac, and now also with a brandnew minimac, I get back full with hope by reading your post here.
no, i'm not sarcastic. I think you tell us that we can get treated correctly if we insist to be treated correctly. and that is a a helpful advice.

  • AirPort Express is dead, but under warranty

My airPort Express Base Station does not work. It does not appear anymore, and is apparantly not sending a signal. I have rest it, and tried to troubleshoot it in every way I can think of. I own others that work fine. It is still under warranty with apple, as the receipt says "warranty effective through Jul. 18, 2008." How do I go about the process of having them replace it or fix it?
