Is my beloved iMac dying slowly?

Hi all!
Hoping someone here can help me as i'm at my wit's end! Have had my iMac for almost 4 years now. I upgraded the OS to Leopard at the end of last year to get it more up-to-date. All was generally ok till about a month ago when it became intermittently slow.. and especially after having been switched on for a while.
More recently, Safari keeps shutting down (something about a flash plugin problem?) and it has become so slow it's not even funny! I could be typing something and the beachball comes up! Opening any program is beyond boring at times... whether it's safari or even mail! iPhoto has started playing up as well when I have my iPhone attached and want to look through the pictures to see which ones to upload.
I've tried to look through some of the postings here.. and a lot of what I'm reading is saying the hard drive is on it's way out... does this sound about right in this case? And if so... what's the best thing to do in this situation? If anyone can babystep me through making good backups of all my files, emails etc... I'd love to get it done before this iMac dies on me and I lose everything (including 2.5 years of pics/videos of my only son's life!) I have an external hard drive that I bought from an apple store end of last summer... at the moment I only put copies of some pictures/videos etc... but is there any other easy way of doing it all?
Many thanks for any help you guys can give me!
Vicky

Hi Vicky,
Boot from your install disc to make sure everything on the startup disk is ok. And since your
iMac is slowing down, make sure there is enough free disk space.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
*While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
Go here for help to backup your files. How to back up and restore your files
As for Safari, try uninstalling then reinstalling the Flash Player plugin.
Uninstall Flash
Install the most recent version of Flash here.
Now repair permissions.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • IMac dying slowly

It started approximately a week ago. When bringing the iMac back up from sleep mode, one could hear distinctive clicking from the HD. After 4-5 clicks, machine comes back fine.
Called Applecare and opened a case #. Did not request service yet, as the problem is intermittent and I wanted to do a short trend as to what conditions might cause this problem. Otherwise everything appeared to be working normally.
Last night my wife smelled something strange, as if the power supply was burning up. I turned the iMac off and back on for 10 seconds. Constant clicking of the HD and more smell. I plan on taking it in today and hope to get it either repaired or replaced. Frustrating, as it is less than 6 months old.
Will post outcome once things are back to normal.

Awaiting parts, new HD and power supply. Based on my findings, no further troubleshooting was done at the genius bar.
Glad I backed my data up before it toasted itself. Definitely back up your own data, as they will charge you for the transfer should you request it.

  • Help please! imac is completely full, FPC wont let me render! I'm a video editor and have over 70 gb worth of videos on the imac which all need to be kept but now beloved imac is full, only had it for 5 months! need external hard drive every 5 months??

FPC wont let me render! I'm a video editor and have over 70 gb worth of videos on the imac which all need to be kept for various clients/backup/original versons but now beloved imac is full, only had it for 5 months! Will Ineed external hard drive every 5 months?? This can't be I've already resorted to getting rid of unsed applications such as garage band, iTunes, address book ect. I've trashed everything I could. what next ???
My video files are massive, converting them to a different format doesn't reduce the size of them it just turns them into mp4 or apple pro res ect
This iMac is for work only so there's no pictures, no music, no conacts, no messenger, no games, nonothing but videos!!

Have a look at this: http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/
It will show you exactly what is taking up all of your space.
You also may want to consider some kind of external storage just for your video projects.

  • 2006 iMac died, new iMac to arrive today, will my files that are backed up on my external hard drive (a My Book for Mac) transfer to the new computer?

2006 iMac died, new iMac to arrive today, i have my files/music/pictures backed up on an external hard dirve MyBook for Mac. Will these files transfer to the new computer? I was also using Time Capsule on the old Mac but cannot migrate because it is dead!

Yes. Use Setup Assistant when you first set up your new iMac. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5872

  • How do I sync old devices to a new iMac without our old iTunes library? Our orig iMac died with the library on it.

Our old iMac died and we got a new one. The problem is that our entire iTunes library was on the old iMac and all of our iPads and iPhones were synced to the old dead iMac. How do we sync the devices to the new iMac now?

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself independently backed up against loss.  To use a device with a new computer you transfer the content from the old computer (or its backup) directly to the new computer, not the device to the new computer. Media syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software.  See this document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991

  • IMac died, need to transfer to new PC via external HD.  Help?

My very old (2005, OS Tiger) iMac died awhile back.  It won't boot up.  Can I get the old files off of the computer?  We are now running a PC.  Assuming that someone can retrieve the old files, would I be able to transfer them to the PC via an external HD?  We have a WD My Passport Ultra external drive that we use with the PC.  Can I transfer files from a Mac to the same external HD?  I am not a very computer savvy person so any advice/help is greatly appreciated.

If you take this old Mac HD into have the files retrieved, just let them know you want to transfer these files to a PC. Music, photos, movies, etc...
Should be fine but, programs won't. You have to buy the programs separately for a PC as Mac programs are formatted for Macs, and PC programs are formatted for PCs unless stated on the box of the program. Given the age (Tiger), I don't think you need to worry about programs as most from that time won't work on todays intel chips.
Also, given the age. You could lose some data but, the tech you go to will advise you what he can and can't do.

  • My IMac runs slowly all of a sudden

    Hi
My IMac runs slowly all of a suddent with the catherine wheel appearing often as i move between porgrams and browse web sites
I have downloaded a sophos anti virus and have run all the security updates from the Apple site
    Suggestions

Since you are using OS X 10.6.8 I would recommend that you reboot from your Original Installation Disk that came with your computer while holding down the D key.  Then run the AHT (Apple Hardware Test) or Extended Apple Hardware Test to see if any of your hardware components are failing.  Then from that same Disk I would run Disk Utility to use "Disk Repair" and then "Repair Permissions" and see if that solves the problem.
    Hope this helps

  • IMac died

    Hi there,
It's been 10 days my imac died. I mean completely dead.
The family ID is Z0E4 ( iMac 24" 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo).
    Issue description:
When you press the button to turn it on you can hear some kind of weak "working" noise but the computer won't even boot and the screen will stay all black. No activity at all.
    Final diagnostic:
I searched in forums and many people talked about an engineering problem. So, I took it to an apple authorized store.
They came up with the diagnostic that the video/graphic card doesn't work anymore and they can't replace it at all.
Tell told me Apple isn't legally obliged to have replacement pieces of any of model of computer with more than 5 years, so I should get a new one - they suggested.
    background:
I've had many problems with my iMac during the 6 years it stayed alive, mostly with having the hard drive dead or the "loud fans party" that many people complained about and I never managed to solve. I also had a problem with the sound card, which got replaced 3 years ago - so, they replaced the whole motherboard.
    REQUEST
I still trust apple as a reliable company that offers long lasting and high quality products, and definitely I would like to keep trusting the company. In fact, I don't think Apple would claim that their computers may just last 6 years and after that you should get a new one.
I believe the company has created a replacement program or a solution for all those who had this issue, which are quite a few as prove the endless forum messages of many users.
Therefore, am looking for a real solution that doesn't involve getting a brand new computer but gets my faith back in Apple.
    I'm all ears.
    Marc

Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

  • My 7-year-old iMac died. I don't plan to replace it. It is backed up to Crashplan. Is it possible to restore my iPhoto library to the cloud, i.e. iCloud or Dropbox, so that I can access the photos as needed from my iPad or iPhone?

Probably not - but that certainly does not involve iPhoto for the Mac - you need to look at Crashplan support for you options
And iCloud is not a place to store photos so that is certainly not a possibility
If you restore your masters folder out of the iPhoto library you will have all of your original photos to do with what you please

  • Mid 2010 27" iMac running slowly

My 27" Mid 2010 Imac has been running more slowly lately.  It takes longer for start-up, and I get the pinwheel frequently when running programs.  I upgraded to Lightroom CC 2015 this week, and the regenerations of the photos on the screen are taking a lot longer than they used to.  I upgraded my memory a couple of years ago to 8GB, so I don't think memory is an issue.  The following is my EtreCheck report:

  • 1st Gen iMac died-cloned HD onto new iMac-software needs to be deactivated?

My old G5 iMac (1st gen) died - capacitors. The Genius Bar confirmed and in a thoughtful gesture removed the HD so that when I purchased a new iMac it would be easier for me to transport the HD & for them to clone (he said they would do it free).
There's no way I could afford to buy a new iMac. eBay to the rescue: I purchased a used iMac G5 17", 2 GHz, 2 GB ram, 160 GB. (A little step up from the old 17" 1.8 GHz, 1GB ram, 80 GB.) I took it to Tekserve; they charged me $60 to clone.
Everything is hunky-dory. Knock-on-wood, the eBay used iMac is working fine (this is still the first week).
Today I launched Photoshop to discover that the app would be valid for only 5 more days! It seems that I am limited to 2 users: my old iMac and my laptop. If I deactivate the old iMac the message says I can activate the new iMac as a user.
Make sense? But my old iMac is just a chassis and a separate(d) HD. How do I communicate with it to deactivate it as a 'user?'
    (1) Am I going to need to take my old HD back to Tekserve (auth service) within the next 4 days and have them hook it up and deactivate?
Since my new iMac is cloned & running & backed up, I was thinking of erasing the old HD and selling it for parts.
    (2) Is there a way for me (I'm not very technically savvy) to erase my old HD that is separated from the iMac and sitting in an anti-static bag in order to sell it?
    (3) Is my best option to have Tekserve do both: 'deactivate' and then erase it? Their charge will impact the potential profit I might make selling it for parts...
    (4) Short of me launching every software app, are there any others that, in your experience, will have this same 'deactivation' issue (before I erase that old HD forever)?
Thanks to all esteemed gurus for any and all advice!

I ididn't think Adobe would be helpful. Nut lo & behold, they were understanding and I was able to activate the software on my cloned iMac.
I didn't think it could be so simple!
Meanwhile, I have taken the old 80 GB hard drive into Tekserve for a clean install and will put it up on eBay for parts/repair along with the 'chassis.'

  • IMac running slowly

I own a late 2010 iMac. I understand it's old but I do not believe it should be running as slowly as it is. I've tried everything to fix it. I ran Mavericks since it came out and haven't had issues since a few days ago. I ran Disk repair and it told me something was wrong and wasn't able to fix it. It told me to restore and erase the computer. I did so and still slow and unresponsive. Boot time takes forever. Is there anything I can do without bringing it to apple? The warranty is way outdated and I don't have the money to replace the hard drive.
Again, the iMac is completely erased so their should't be any issues. Please help

If Disk Utility found a problem and was unable to repair it in Recovery mode, then the hard drive is failing or there is some other hardware fault. The fault must be repaired if you want to continue using the machine. Alternatively, you may be able to start up from an external drive and stop using the internal one.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
