Is my board dead????

Got my board yesterday and installed it. Everything powers up, but the northbridge fan doesn't spin andI get nothing from the onboard NIC or from the keyboard, mouse, and nothing displays on the monitor. I took the board out and reinstalled it to make sure nothing was shorting out in the case,but same results. Does it sound like it's dead? It does to me so I guess it may be RMA time.

Have you tried to remove, then replace, DIMM MODS.?.. ...What do you mean when you say "Everything powers up but...? What is powering up?, the CPU fan? the D-LED lights?...Are you able to get into the BIOS?. You can also try to reset the CMOS...Take the BATT. out and put back in...Let us know ...As until you try some more things I can't say that it is really DEAD...Hope something works ...PS....Check to make sure that you have the MAIN (20 pin) and the Proc.(4 pin) Power pins Plugged in...Sean REILLY875

Is my logic board dead? I can't see a hard drive

My G4 Powerbook (FW800, 1.25GHz model) stopped booting last week, and showed the question mark folder. I ran disk utility from the Tiger CD, and it doesn't "see" the drive. Same with system profiler. Under ATA it shows my Matshita CD-RW, but no hard disk.
Figuring the hard disk is dead, I replace it with a Hitachi 5K160.
The result is the same - neither disk utility nor system profiler can "see" the drive. I also tried target disk mode, and the firewire host couldn't see it either.
This leads me to suspect the logic board, perhaps specifically the ATA controller. However, this doesn't quite make sense, since if the ATA controlled was dead why would the CD-RW drive work?
There are no jumpers in the new drive (just like the old one), which makes it a master.

i've seen dead drives - clicking, buzzing and not accessible that passed all tests including fsck command.
often tests won't find errors.
if 2 different dirves are not recognized by Disk Utility it's either drives, drive cable (rare but possible) or logic board.
another way to test drives is to put them into FireWire external case (probably can get one for $20) and try to format them that way.
if drives work and boot the machine, it's likely either drive cable or logic board problem.

Is the board dead?

i have my neo2 working fine for a couple of days. i then thought id have a little play with some light overclocking. all was fine till i hit 233 fsb then the computer would not boot at all. i have tried to reset the cmos, taken the battery out but it still will not boot. Ive used the d bracket and when it starts it has top right and both bottom leds lit which says it start chipset init.
is this a dead board ?

MacBook Pro does't boot, logic board dead?

Hi there, I have a big problem with my MBP 1,87 Ghz. It doesn't boot anymore, I press on button and fans starts, hd seems to make a little noise too and anything else happen, screen remain black and the white led is on but doesn't blink. Keyboard seems to be off, caps lock and num leds doesn't turn on, USB ports seems to be ok. I've tried changing the RAM but doesn''t helped. Is the logic board that is dead? Help me please!

P.S. I have already tried pram and scm reset.

Eclipse board dead?

Hello,
I have an eclipse board that stopped working as soon as I installed it in another case.
I know what I'm doing so I don't see the odds as a personal screw-up too high, although considering the nature of when the problem began and the difficulty is seems to resolve it, makes me doubt.
pressing the power button nothing happens, power supply doesn't seem to react (even though it works tested on another pc)
using the panel buttons on the board doesn't do anything.
Actually it's basicly dead, except for the one LED I marked on the .jpg.
When searching in the board's manual, it just says 'Standby led' and thats it.
Is there anything at all I can try at this point?
I removed battery for a while, I tried the jumpers method.. nothing at all..
It's definitely a motherboard error, eliminated other possibilities.

I have, just the board and the power supply, using the on board power buttons..they light up but that's it.
The power doesn't do anything more than lighting up those buttons and the mysterious "Standby LED" in any circumstance I tried. Did it with RAM / processor / etc and without... even though I'm very sure it has nothing to do with other hardware failing besides the board.

BlackBerry Z10 sudden mother board dead... really dissapointed

My blackberry Z10 suddently went dead (no power) and according to the repair center the mother board IC to be replaced but in Sri Lanka there is no dealer for Blackberry so it cannot be done locally. So through one of my friends i sent the phone to India but according to them should replaced the mother board completely and the cost is very high which is around usd 200. i'm a blackberry user for morethan 7years and i purchased this phone from singapore through one of my friends and used only around 7/8 months.
So is there any assist i could get into this issue...??? it will be great if anyone could advise me into this.

Replacing the motherboard IS a new device. It means a new PIN and that means new device. You could purchase a new Z10 on Shopblackberry.com for $299. I can't imagine a motherboard and labor to install it being any less than that. And then, what are you left with? A device almost a year old that you just dumped $300 into. Not worth it. That's why I suggest just replacing the device. You do what you need/want to do. That's my opinion.

HELP NEEDED!!! BIOS hangs, is my board dead?

It is probably my fault for trying to install a custom bios but I acknowledge the fact that I was stupid. At POST it will hang after Auto detection of my drives. According to the D-Bracket it hangs at Initializing Floppy Drive Controller but it never makes it to the Promise Bios. Is there anything I can do? Since I can't reflash I feel pretty stuck... Is my board hosed or is this something I can get repaired? Please, any suggestions are very welcome.
My board is a 845-Ultra AR by the way

Board Dead... no reason

I have a K7N2-Delta and heres what happened:
1.) I bought the board February
2.) Used it until last month no problem
3.) Last Month twice it shut down randomly
4.) Last week it flicked off never turned back on
Now it used to be that when i turned it on it would show 2 red and 2 green lights indicating a bad processor.. i was thinking that can't be right! so i plug in a 1 ghz tbird and that doesn't work either.
So after eliminating the processor as the problem (remember MSI error code says processor..) i took the board out reconnected all wires etc. While doing that it wouldn't power up at all! I though what the @#%#@% and so I fiddled with all the connecters and moved board etc and all of a sudden while in the case unscrewwed down it turns on, i move it an inch more and it turns off and it does that a few times. Then suddenly i hear a faint hiss and see some smoke.
Nothin appears damaged! I can't figure out whats wrong. The worst thing is i already ordered a new CPU because stupidly i trusted MSI's error code without question. So what could be the deal here? Is the board supposed to be grounded out in some manner?
I don't have the $$$$ to replace this board for a long time :( I would like MSI to just exchange it with me. What do I do?
Unfortunatelly this will be a make or break relationship between myself and MSI. I've purchased probably 30 boards and tons of video cards/cd burners for various customers on my side job and never had problems. If this proves to be a problem I won't be trusting MSI products any longer.
I greatly appreciate anyones suggestions.

Let me get this straight, 30 boards and never had problems?
One board and a problem and you ready to sever a relationship?
If 1 board died for no reason and MSI would not replace it thats 120 bucks out of my pocket. Then every board I bought I would be at risk of losing money. It has nothing to do with the fact MSI's products are fantastic its just that @#$^ happens and sometimes a board is bad and it shouldn't cost me IMHO. I charge very little for upgrading people's systems and 120 bucks is a major hit.

PowerBook 15" Al not turning on (Logic Board dead)

My powerbook has not been turning on since last morning. I went to get it checked at the apple care centre in Bangalore and they tell me its a logic board issue. Now this is something very strange for me. Last night it was working fine and I had just turned my pb off after work. When I tried to start it in the morning it just wouldnt turn on and now they tell me that the logic board had gone kaput. I cant understand how this can happen when there is was off the external power supply.
Has someone been experiencing similar problem of the logic board just dying ?
I bought it in April 2005.

I have not seen as many logic board issues with the 15", although if you go to the Search field at the top right of this page and type in logicboard, I am sure you will find you are not the only one.
G3 and G4 iBooks have had much more of an issue, as have the 12" G4 PowerBooks. I am not such what causes it, although I am pretty sure it is not something that you did.
Unfortunately, your computer is not of much use without the logic board, so I guess you'll have to bite the bullet and get it fixed. If you have AppleCare it should not cost you anything; if you don't, I'm not sure what the prices are in Bangalore.

Logic board dead?

hello all,
i've recently had some problems with my 12" ibook G4 1.2ghz (late 2004) and i'm wondering if it's a problem with the logic board. i'll walk through what happened:
1. it shut down while on sleep
2. then shut down while i was using it. i realized that it hadn't totally shut down because i could hear the harddrive spinning and the caps/num lock lights still came on, but no shortcuts worked (ie the commandopt+ctrleject shutdown) so i had to hold down power button for 5 seconds.
3. i plugged in an external display at this stage to see if it was just an internal display problem - but nothing came up on external display.
4. i did PMU and PRAM reset and it worked for a couple hours and everything seemed fine. i ran hardware test and everything passed. then the same shut down thing happened, with hardrive still spinning, etc.
5. had troubles starting up, had to do a PMU reset again. but then it kept doing the same shut down. tested with battery or plugged in, same thing.
6. eventually when i'd try to start up the cpu fan would turn on and go nuts but nothing would happen. now i cant get past this stage and i have to remove the power to get the fan to stop.
7. i took out my harddrive and tested it and its fine.
i read a couple other posts that had a similar problem. anyone find a solution? is it the logic board??

Yeah, it's the logic board. It just happened to me and if you follow this link at the bottom, you'll see about a hundred people confirming it. The guy that hosts this page did some great research and found an easy, cheap fix that seems to work for almost everyone. Again, you can read their experiences. The common denominators among all these people are: Your symptoms, happens for no reason (i.e. not dropped or bumped or abused) AND the biggie, all were told by Apple that if it's not under warranty or Apple Care it would be about a $1000 job to repair it with no exceptions (listed on this site at least). They have recently been using the tech support call as a segue into "Why don't you just put that money toward a new MacBook?"
To listen to the sheer number of people reporting the same as you (and me- G4 14" 1.42 Ghz 7 mo.s old) and mentioning to how many of their friends it's happened to, it's hard to believe Apple can keep a straight face and say there is no problem with these models. IMHO, If they did not have the MacBook to try and push off on everyone, they would be doing a recall on all these or risk losing tons of sales on a very popular model. Hope this helps. 648 Max dead board???

Hello,
I just purchased a "new" 648 Max board on Ebay. I installed a new P4 2.4Ghz CPU, Pony 256Mb DDR-2700, Radeon 7000 and 175WD HD. From the D-Bracket leds, it appears the board will not get past the second POST test (Early Chipset Initialization per the manual ?( ).
To debug the problem I have removed the video card and disconnected the IDE and floppy cables. In addition, reset the CMOS(with power unplugged). Any ideas what the "early chipset initalization" failure really means?
I have contacted the Ebay seller but they are saying change the RAM, power supply and processor. Since the POST passed the CPU check but failed before the RAM check I do not beleive the processor or power supply are defective. Any thoughts on this problem? Is the board dead????

CPUs almost never die so that's pretty unlikely.
Thank you for the rapid feedback. The MSI board fit perfectly in the new compusa case with new compusa 450w precison power supply. The 6 brass standoffs were securely tightened to case with the 6 screws holding the MB in place. I assume there were no plastic spacers needed to isolate the MB from the chassis? I did purchase additional memory. In addition, I will measure the voltage on each of the power supply pins.

Replacing/ fixing the Logic Board yourself

Hi there, I have taken my iBook (dual USB, @ 700MHz, 20 GB HDD) to this Apple Store in Buenos Aires, which I'm pretty sure has a fried Logic Board.
They told me up front that the cost wil be around 700 U$S, and that the warranty will be 90 days. I'm not thrilled at all for the warranty, I expect to be a lot longer after spending all that money!
Anyways, a couple of questions:
1- Is 90 days a regular warranty period, or am I being robbed?
2- Aside from replacing the Logic Board with a new one, is there anything I can do to fix a Logic Board?
(Anything I can solder, for instance; or something like that?)

No, the iBook does not show the "classic" Logic Board symptoms, it simply does nothing at all when plugged and the power button is pressed, nothing at all. (Tried with two different batteries, w/o batteries, w/o the extra RAM, w/o the AirPort card... Nothing, in any case)
Left it on the Apple Store, they will open it for 20 U$S and let me know on Thursday what it is going on with it, and see if I accept the charges for the repair.
The problem of getting a MacBook is that if repairing the iBook is expensive, getting a MacBook costs some 2000 U$S down here
I guess if everything goes bad with the local Apple Store here (have to pay 700 + U$S for the job, etc. pretty much what I expect) I'll wait and see if I can send it to DT&T, what they offer is simply amazing, not only the price, but also the 6 months warranty.

IBook dead pixels?

How many people have a dead pixel on a new iBook? I love my new iBook 12", except for a dead pixel near the center. An apple support tech sent me some documents that explain how this is acceptable and normal, and the Genius at the Apple store agrees. While one pixel may be acceptable, in years of owning cheap-brand PC laptops I have never seen one dead pixel, and nobody I know with a iBook or PowerBook has one either...nor do the demos at the Apple store? Anyone care to comment? I'm just suprised to see such a defect on an Apple, even if they consider it acceptable. I love the computer itself, just a bit disappointed.

I completely disagree. Us users pay a lot of money for our computers. Apple has no right to take our money and give us products with logic board,dead pixel,scratch issues. They have no right to sell us such bad quality products.
I know a lot of people on these Discussions will try to kill me now. But come on, let's face it. Apple has f*cked up on its quality control.
They have offered to have logic boards replaced on certain iBooks. They have not however said anything about dead pixels or scratches. I know they have some rule where you must have 5 dead pixels in order to get it repaired. That's a load of rubbish. Us users don't have to put up with a bad quality screen. We pay a lot for our items and we don't expect any shortfall in the value we get for it.
I just hope Apple don't go down the Microsoft route...

often i have the cannot wake up from sleep problem.
usually i disconnect power and battery to force shutdown.
this time now the computer is dead, deceased, kaput....
absolutely nothing when pressing start button.
power supply is ok, battery is ok.
have reset PMU.
has something been killed by disconnecting power while in sleep?

history, my last 3 apple laptops:
1. This machine. Keyboard failed (replaced under warranty)
Optical drive will not eject a disk (all "fixes" don't work).
airport and sound periodically "not found"
Flaky USB port.
Logic board dead.
2. powerbook G4. Replaced screen, replaced logic board, replaced optical drive.
3. iBook 500. eventually replaced screen under recall program, for a very long time apple denied the problem for my serial number.
could you have any faith in apple products after this sequence?

all my work is on the hard drive of course.
so when i get the machine back i have to open it up,
take out the hard drive and mount it in a box then transfer my data to my windows laptop (cost one third of the macbook and is quite reliable).

my first was a mac IIvx with 100MB hard drive and 4 MB RAM.
if there was a viable alternative for me i change brands immediately.

Motherboard dead?!?!?!

I am building a new ring ...
I have a 550 watt power supply (24 pin to 20 pin converter), ati 9700 pro video card, atx tower case, 512 ocz dual channel ddr ram pc4200, floppy,cd drive.
When i first turn on the computer it says this

I pressed f1 but it frozed. I tred to reset the cmos. it didn't help. I unplug all input device (usb,serial,mouse,keyboard) still doesn't work .... my video card doesn't display nothing.
I tryed a diffrent PSU 200 watt and a 420 watt. I tryed video card Gforce fx 5200 and a ait 9700 pro still doesn't work.
I am pissed, at first i was supprised i it worked then all of the suddently it's dead. I tryed everthing I could. i spend 6 hours testing diffrent devices. My ram, video card psu everything is function right - my guess .. is the mother board dead? or is it just playing me stupid retarted games.

You've been asked several times now - READ THIS MOAN GUIDE, create a signature with ALL your system specifcations as you see from most users and the mods.
So far you have asked the same question time and time again and from what I can see (I've read the thread 3 times now) you still haven't even told us what type the motherboard is or what the processor is!!!
Nothing on the monitor at all suggests 1 of 3 things, CPU, Motherboard, or Memory is either dead or not configured correctly, but until we know what we are dealing with, how do you expect us to be able to answer your questions.
If you bought the board refurbished from newegg then your only course of action is to send it back to newegg, I do not speak for them, but I highly doubt MSI will touch it with a barge pole.
So to keep you going try this:-
Use your 550W power supply (the 200W unit is useless - if you've managed to post in the correct forum that is)
Use a single stick of memory in socket 1
Take the processor out and check for contamination in the ZIF socket holes and on the processor pins.
Check the ZIF socket mechanism to ensure all clamps are working correctly.
Insert your processor and close the ZIF socket.
Add your Heatsink and Fan with relevant Thermal Interface Material (grease of white goop)
Unplug ALL IDE, SATA, and USB connectors.
Trying Booting the system and tell us what happens.
If it beeps, make sure you note how many and at what intervals (its going to be VERY hard to diagnose without a D Bracket, but we'll try)
I do not like the sound of your description of posting - If it is the Promise message you mentioned in your original post that comes up first, it is either a motherboard I have never heard of or something is VERY VERY wrong. It could be that the true AMIBIOS is either damaged or has been wiped.
We will help you, but help us first by reading the Moan Guide and following the advice of the stickies.
