Is my card dying?

I have an older G5 PowerMac, and I have verizon fios, and the standard verizon router. I think my card is possibly dying, but I'm not too sure. I checked some forums like mac fix it, but nothing seems to work. I might have to try a clean install, or maybe reseat my airport card, but I was curious if these symptoms indicate a dying card.
I haven't had a problem with it until the other day. My wireless signal started to drop sporadically from the network. I tried resetting the router, but that didn't help. I deleted the network preferences, keychain password, and removed then re-added my network info, restarted, and that seemed to work, but I still get dropped from the network.
Also, I have the correct settings for my network, but airport gives me the amber color, and despite entering in the correct password, I'm told it is incorrect. The system profiler lists the airport card, so I thought it wasn't dead.
Any suggestions?

chanyo1, Welcome to the discussion area!
Are you able to compare the wireless performance of your G5 with any other computer sitting next to the G5? It is possible that you are experiencing RF interference which is interfering with your network. Try configuring the base station to use a different channel. You can change the channel until you find one which works better or you run out of channels.

  • Do Airport Cards "Die"?

Do airport cards die, croak, kick the bucket after a few years?
My iMac has had the same card for four years.
The iMac detects the card, and the card gets signal from the base station when it boots up.
But five minutes after the computer boots, the connection between the card and the base station fizzles, quits, dies, poof-out.
The iMac still detects the card, but no send/receive is going on.
Could it be that my Airport card has gone to Airport card heaven???

I had thought that the Airport card in my iMac G4 had died. When I had an old base station, I had upgraded to some system update of some kind - that's when the signal began dropping off first on the dark side pc with it's Dell TrueMobile, then on the iBook G3 then finally the iMac started to have problems. I went and bought a Extreme base & new DSL. For a few weeks A-OK. Just did software updates on the iMac (the last being a security update). The signal began going on and off with increasing degredation and loss time. I tried all the standard recommendations (as I did the 1st time with the old base) - still it got worse. I turned on the old base & moved it closer to the iMac & saw signal - so I ethernet'd the old base Wan to the Extreme LAN, & old base LAN to the dark side pc. AAll 3 were happy as a clam for one night -then the signal died on the iMac. For days I tried all kinds of things, checking with iStumbler - Nada - I was sure that it had died. I posted a question about getting USB wireless for the Mac. Duane suggested that I check out Ethenet wireless adapters (he seems to be an excellent poster interested in helping people and solving their problems - Frank does too). I was about to call and order one. I thought that I would LAN out from the old Base to the iMac. Before I did, I knew that the dark side pc would have no connection, so I re-installed the driver (actually the other day I had nuked & rebuilt the dark side pc). Suddeny, for the 1st time in over two years, the Dell TrueMobile maintained a consistent signal. Then i plugged the ethernet cable from the old base LAN to the iMac. Tried to get a web site, then remembered that I needed to go to the System Preferences and include Ethernet in the Network preferences - I onlly had Airport check & at the top of the list. Suddenly I had an airport signal & connected to a site. My son said it was the ethernet, so I unplugged the ethernet. It still worked. Now with iStumbler on the iMac I see both bases, the old and the Extreme - I had seen nothing for days - now I cocnsistenetly see signals maintained at levels that I never experienced over the last two years. All three, iMac, iBook, dark side pc (& an XBox) are all super good & have been for over a day.
I said all this to show how bizare this all seems, but to encourage you not to too quickly give up hope - the Airport card may not be dead after all! If, after you try the various recommendations or the suggested permutations & combinations, and still cannot get a signal - try to get the card checked if you can (Apple store, etc.) Otherwise, consider Duane's advice about wireless ethernet adapters (rather than a USB solution).
I know that I did NOT answer your question - I could be wrong, but I think that in the end, only Apple will be able to really answer the question - but until then, do not give up hope and please consider following the suggestions on some of the super-posters (not said in a derogatory way, but to establish their credibilty), even if some suggestions may seem too obvious, etc.

  • Ethernet card dying?

    Hi,
I'm having strange problems with my built-in ethernet interface. I lose this interface in a seemingly random fashion. I notice because I am suddenly disconnected from the internet. The only thing that will 'fix' this is unplugging/replugging the ethernet cord, and just recently I have to do this several times in a row.
When I get disconnected, there is no 'Built-in Ethernet' in the 'Network' preference pane (ie, not even the red dot). I take this to mean that the machine can't detect its existence, let alone communicate with it. I'll look in the system profiler next time this happens to see if it is found there.
I first noticed this behavior about 8 months ago. It happened very infrequently. Now, it is a daily occurrence. If the pattern continues, it will soon be an hourly occurrence.
My impression is that the ethernet card is dying, which will be expensive to replace. Before I consider doing this, are there any other diagnoses among this crowd? Any tips/advice?
    Thanks in advance.

Its the 12' 1.5 GHz model.
The ethernet cord is definitely not the problem. That was the first thing I checked.
Very recently, I used fsck in single-user mode to tackle some non-related problems. Turns out the problems I was experiencing had to do with software calling an obsolete OSX function (I know that from looking at the syslog). Anyways, this doesn't have anything to do with the ethernet problem. Remember that the ethernet problem started many months ago.

  • Thinkpad w510 video card died?

    Hi
    1. So i own W510. Some days ago video card stopped working in the middle of watching streaming video. It works fine in safe mode but when i use video driver it crashes right on login to windows. I was using windows 8. Also if i deinstall drivers - it works just fine.
I tried clean install of windows 7. Fan and heatsink are totally clean. BIOS is latest, since months ago.
I tried lenovo drivers on both of the systems. I tried removing each of the 4 ram modules. Tried memtest. I also tried nvidia current, beta and also older nvidia drivers on both systems. I'm a computer tech so i'm pretty sure i tried to isolate every possible software issue... It just crashes with nvidia related BSOD. Is my video card dead? I had that overheating problem of GPU reaching ~85 degrees during work sometimes, like in some other threads i've seen on this forum...
    2. My warranty expired some months ago. I want to buy an extension warranty. Website says "There are currently no Service Offerings for this system.". I live in israel and when i call IBM israel - they give me number of lenovo israel. I call lenovo - nobody picks up. Please advice? I'm panicking, its way too expensive laptop just to "die"
    Thanks!
[update] After the computer way lying away for a couple of days - i was able to boot it and everything works. Its sort of not normal, i have to get it checked. My second question about extended warranty still applies. And would be really nice to hear some thoughts about the video issue.
[post update] It just crashed again with the same issue after like 5-10 minutes of working. Maybe its related to it heating up and a PCB loses some contact or something. video_tdr_failure nvlddmkm.sys BSOD. And now again, after half an hour of being off it was able to start. After 5-10 minutes of being on it hanged, flashed and then showed a "Video driver succesfully recovered" message. Definetely seems like video card or video ram dying. And after some minutes it flashed the same message again twice and after a moment went into the same BSOD.

Yes that's how it looks like. Trying to get ahold of some local place/service center to get a warranty extension.
Any idea how much would it cost without a warranty?
Its i7 extreme cpu, temps get to 80-90c under loads

  • AirPort Card died?

My MacBook's only about three month's old. Anyhow, yesterday, my AirPort turned off on it's own and I couldn't turn it on. Restarted it and it was fine for a bit and later I got a "No AirPort card installed" message. Did my AirPort card like die or something? A little while before, I did notice that my wireless internet kept disconnecting, but I didn't think anything of it... Any help? And I'm still covered under the warranty, so I can ask them to do something about it, right? Thanks in advance.

before taking it in i would connected via ethernet port and then update all of the drivers... i think the other day i just did an update for my airport card so this may work for you....

  • Graphics card dying?

I have been having problems with my display for the last 6 months or more. Distortions on the screen and sometimes squares of colors overlaid and now I've found that when I'm viewing pictures in iPhoto in full screen when I get to one picture that has been edited (cropped or adjusted) there's a distortion and color mess all over it, see it here:
    http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/7220/screenzm.png
This only happens with edited pictures and in full screen in iPhoto.
But the other problems happen with Safari, Photoshop and probably everything else. I had these problems since before Snow Leopard, SL didn't change anything. I have no clue what started them, is my graphics card (ATI Radeon X1600) dying? can I do anything about this?
A hardware test doesn't report any problems.

Run the Apple Hardware Test and see what it tells you.

  • Qosmio X870-112 3D - Nvidia Graphics card DIED

I bought the Toshiba Qosmio 2 years ago and after using it only for work
I decided to take advantage of its potential for the game. I installed an old game of 2006, and after 10 days the video card is dead. I have my own electronic laboratory, I opened the computer, cleaned, replaced the heat conducting paste and monitored the temperature with thermocouples professional electronic.
There are no overheating problems but the video card is dead, it must be replaced. "A very common problem, unfortunately all the Nvida video cards, which require a reballing GPU or complete replacement.
Where can I find the video card replacement? does anyone know who to contact?
Toshiba has disappointed me, I paid 2,500 euro for this computer with its hard drive and ram upgrade and after 2 years is not worth anything anymore.

Such issue is very pity and I can understand you very well.
I think it was simply bad luck that this issue happened after the warranty has expired.
But in my opinion a hardware malfunction can happen always and it doesnt depend on notebook model or notebook manufacturer.
In case of hardware malfunctions, the Toshiba authorized service provider is the first contact point if it comes to fix the notebook or to order new parts.
But new GPU or the motherboard might be very expensive affair and I would recommend you to ask for the cost estimate.

  • MacPro 1,1 Video card died ! Options ?

Hey all, I'm having some problems with my MacPro and I'm suspecting the video card at this point.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2558303&tstart=0
I was looking at the Apple store website and see only 2 listed in my price range, the NVIDIA GeForce GT 120, and the ATI Radeon HD 5770.
Will both these cards work in a MacPro 1,1 (2006 model) I've done a search but have found conflicting information. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    - Jay

DP Art is right I expect and the table appearing on this page that compares the 5770 and the 5870 presents it in "black and white":
    http://www.apple.com/macpro/features/graphics.html
I've got a 4870 card on backorder ($349) with Apple and am seriously considering forking out another $100 to get the 5870, if reports continue to be positive about the use of the 5870 in a Mac Pro 1,1.
I've been on an upgrade path the last few months to help my MP Xeon give me a few more good years doing design work in CS apps. (New hard drives, SL upgrade, new NEC PA241W monitor, soon the card and then more RAM.) Seems wise to go for the best I can get with the card - hoping the 5870 reports continue to confirm I can. Need to decide before Apple ships the 4870 to me.
If anyone that is now reading my post in this designers' thread possesses new info on the wisdom of my thinking, please comment. Thanks!

  • Is my MacBook Airport Extreme card dying?

I have a black MacBook with an airport card:
    AirPort Card Information:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x86)
    Wireless Card Locale: Worldwide
    Wireless Card Firmware Version: 1.4.10.3
For a couple of years I have connected quite happily to wireless internet at home via a BT Broadband Home Hub. Over the last couple of weeks, however, I have had major intermittent problems with signal strength if I am more than a couple of metres from the Hub; I have had the signal strength icon grey out completely when I was no more than ten feet away through a plaster ceiing and wood floor, in a room where the signal previously showed at full strength.
I have considered the possibility that a neighbour's electronic activity may be causing interference. This seems unlikely, since I have twice changed channels on the BT Home Hub without solving the problem, and when I search for other local networks (using e.g . the Airport Radar 2 widget) I see no strong signals. The clincher is that my wife's iBook seems not to have any signal strength problems.
So, I ask - could my Airport Extreme card be faulty in some way? How could I investigate this further? Can this part be replaced by the user (i.e. me)?
I might mention that a while back I installed a larger hard disk, so my computer may be running a bit hotter than usual. But the fan is by no means on continually, so I am doubtful about that as a cause.

Wow, it seems like a lot of you are having problems. I doubt all of you are having hardware issues.
Here's some general things to consider (in no particular order, though I recommend reinstalling as a last resort.):
    1. Have you changed internet settings at all recently?
    2. What frequency is your router using? If it's an Airport Extreme you can check this using Airport utility. Try changing it's frequency to a different setting. Often times devices in the are can cause interference. Check Network Utility in the Utilities folder to view info about your Airport card. The interface should be en1. Then in Airport utility you can make sure the settings will work with your mac.
    3. Try other other computers with that same router.
    4. Try your Mac on other networks or routers.
    5. Repair permissions from Disk Utility.
    6. Try resetting the PRAM at startup by holding command (Apple)-Option-P-R
    7. As you said: archive and install.
    8. Erase and install.
    9. Windows if you have boot camp.
    10. Run the diagnostics from the install disc by booting up with the D key.
    11. run an alternate diagnostic utility (Techtool, etc.)
Christopher: you seem to have done some testing. Still it doesn't necessarily seem that it is a hardware problem. Technically speaking it is not a user replaceable part. However, it don't believe it's overwhelmingly difficult to do yourself. You would need to remove the keyboard which would require you to remove the battery and some screws. There's guides at iFixit.com Or if you really want to do some googling, you may be able to hunt down Apple's own service manual -though end users aren't supposed to have them. This is the airport card you need: http://www.ifixit.com/MacBook-Parts/MacBook-802-11g-Airport-Extreme-Card/IF185-0 11
If you have AppleCare for your Mac, it's likely still under warranty, and I wouldn't open the computer. Also if you try that airport card and it doesn't work, you could have an antenna problem, which is more difficult to get at.

  • Video Card Died - which replacement for my situation?

    Hi,
I have a PM G5 - Dual 2.0 GHz and I replaced the stock card with a ATI Mac Radeon 9800 Special Edition almost 4 years ago. I have 2 17" Apple monitors (ADC connectors) and I was using one of them straight on the ADC connector on the card and then using a DVIator (DVI to ADC convertor) to plug the other monitor in the DVI plug on the card.
If you're not familiar with the card, it has a ADC and DVI output and has 256 MB. The computer started freezing up for no reason, so I did standard troubleshooting and narrowed it down to the card itself. (With everything else in the same configuration, I changed the card from the ATI back to the stock card and my freezing problem went away. With the ATI card, it would freeze up within 5 minutes of starting up.)
So, do I try to find another one of these cards, or do I go another route like getting a card with 2 DVI outputs and getting another DVIator or what? I need a card that is single slot because I have a G5 Jam from Wiebetech that lets me mount 2 hard drives in the space that would normally house the middle 2 card slots.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    - Keith

    Hi-
You don't say what your card is, so I can't recommend equivalent performance options....
Any OEM card with an ADC and DVI port will work, if you can find one.
They are around, as system pulls, and usually expensive- several hundred dollars.
The only card currently produced is the Radeon 9600 Pro PC and Mac Edition. It has 2 DVI ports.
Geforce 6800's have been available on eBay lately. That card also has dual DVI ports.

  • My ATT 3G SIM Card Died....

Used my 3G over the weekend on the iPad 3G, worked great, faster than the hotels WiFi.
Turned it on this morning and I had the bars and ATT, but no 3G icon. Did all the resets, restores ect. Then called Apple Care, no luck, since it was a 3G issue got transferred to ATT, great.. So this guy has me do all the same stuff, he has no idea, only working off a piece of paper since its so new. Puts me on hold then the idea comes into my head, this usually happens when on hold for tech support. So while I'm on hold I pop my SIM out and my Wife has the exact same 3G iPad and swap SIMs. Sure enough, no 3G in her's with my SIM, and I got a 3G icon in mine with her SIM. The guy comes back on and I told him what I did, he added it to his list of trouble shooting, at the top too!!
Went to the ATT store and got a new micro SIM, and I'm up and running again.

The iPhone 4 requires a micro sim. You can either try cutting yours or seeing if your provider offers micro sims. There are instructions on the net about how to cut full size sims, as well as tools to do so.

  • GT 70 missing graphic card and constant fan noise Issues

Not even sure if this is the correct place to post this thread if not could someone move it to a different section.
So today for some odd reason my laptop decided to freak out on me. I get a bluescreen saying VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE, I have GT70 NVIDIA GTX 675m I was doing a scan on my computer and the lower right hand corner it said Application has been blocked from accessing Graphics hardware. So before it kept saying that over and over again. The computer basically just lagged out and I did a hard shut down to turn it off. I turned it back on and it started up to the BIOS for some unknown reason I didn't press any button so then I go over to Save & Exit and it said do you want to save the changes, I said no and it started up again to the desktop but very slowly.
Then my desktop finally shows up but now I hear what appears to be my video card fan or the fan that turns on when you are overclocking or just when you hit the fan button on the keyboard constantly running. I am freaking again myself because I don't want this laptop to die on me. My NIVIDIA card is no longer even showing up on the taskbar, even when I go to control panel I click on the NIVIDIA control panel and it doesn't even come up. So I try doing a system restore, after it restarts the video card is showing up I do a couple of restarts to get things back in order again. Even the fan is no longer blasting like before which puts me at ease.
I go to watch a YouTube video and then the video freezes then in the lower right hand corner I couldn't see what it was because it faded away something about the video card crashing so then after it crashes my fan starts to go off again and I am freaking out again. I tried to do another system restore but it seems that it's not working any more. Is my video card dying or do I need to install new drivers for it.
How come it's no longer showing up on my device manager? Did it die or something?

It has been acting very strange today. I turned it off last night and went to sleep, woke up a couple of hours later to turn it back on and it went to the desktop very slowly but my GTX 675m card showed up in the display under device manager also the fan was working normally like it usually does and not constantly going. I was sort of shaking my head not understanding how it showed up again.
So I took it into a computer repair place to see what they might make of it. Won't get any word until tomorrow or Monday to see what it might be, strange enough when they booted up the system at the computer place it booted up quickly and he told me that the GeForce Experience thing opened up and all that. But I don't really trust the laptop, I told them I would still like for them to check it to see if my GPU is really dying. They said they will run some tests to see if it's a hardware problem or software problem.
As for buying a new GPU I am not sure i want to pay that much, is there something more cheaper that might be better than 675m? I keep hearing people saying how bad the 675m is and how NVIDIA does not care much for that particular card. Also my 2 year warranty for the laptop just expired in January and I have no idea why this always happens to me once the warranty expires something wrong happens, not sure if it's a coincidence or just bad luck.
Guess I will see what happens when I get the computer back from the repair place, paid $89 dollars just for them to check it which they say is a lot better price than Geek Squad cause they would have me paying $200. Ugh! This crap makes my anxiety go sky high. Hate to lose my laptop, I mean it seems to boot up to the desktop but that stupid cooler fan going full blast is what concerns me.

  • Video Card Dead Geforce 4 ti 4600

My Video card died the other night and i was wondering if warrenty will still be valid. i was in the middle of playing return to castle wolfenstein when the computer froze so i had to turn it off. when i tured it on i got nothing but a blank screen. now i have another video card in the computer and it works fine. i took the dead one and put it in another computer with the same result i get a blank screen. now my question about warrenty is i had taken off the heatsink and put new heatsink compound between the chip and heatsink and it was done very professional. i put artic silver 3 between and none of it is near the end of the chip it's all on the metal part of the graphics chip. now when i montored it the temp was lower then before. that was a long time ago. i did that 2 days after  i bought it. now i have been using it for about 5 months. and all of a sudden it died. will i still have warrenty on it. i also have another question if i don't have warrenty can i send it in for repairs because this card cost me $550 dollers when i bought it, and whatever it costs to repair it should cost less then buying one brand new one. if you have any information that could help me on this please e-mail at unknown1337@hotmail and type Dead Geforce as the subject. thankyou in advance

when i try to fill out the rma form in pdf format all the text I write onto it is not saved, i sent the rma department an email with all the required information but not the form, and haven't heard back from that yet.   It has been about 2 days.   Is that a bad sign?  How long does it usually take to get an rma number?

  • Using a different wifi card in a Photosmart C309A

I'm one of the many people that has a Photosmart C309a that the wifi card died shortly after warranty.  I found a C309 at a recycle place and pulled the card (hey, they only charged me $5 for it).  The number on the card is 1150-7936, not 1150-7931 that has been said in the forums.  Do any techs think the 7936 will work??

***Note to those desparately searching for 1150-7931 cards:
I tried replacing the 1150-7931 with a 1150-7930. There are similar except for the jack (I assumed that the right angle jack is the "1" designation in the s/n)  I assumed wrong– it did not work.
good luck out there. Please post your info if you gain any.
    Thanks!

Today while view images in iPhoto (latest version)
My screen suddenly flickered red and the the lower 3 quarters of the screen (apple cinema display 24) went all scrambled.
    I shut down.
I checked the display by attaching it to my mac mini and no problems, works perfectly.
I reattached the display to my Mac Pro again.
I booted in safe mode and the screen was barely discernible and totally psychedelic (reds and magenta's) but I could navigate around.
decided to reboot and zap the PRAM (x3).
let the machine continue after 3rd PRAM zap and the screen was totally unreadable.
rebooted in safe mode and screen was worse.
tried to reboot with the snow leopard dvd using "option" this screen came up fine.
chose the 10.6 install disc and the grey apple screen with the little time elapse wheel came up as the disc was being read, about 5 mins into the dvd read the screen froze.
decided to start machine in target disc mode "T key" and attached the Mac Pro to my mini via firewire. all of the mac pro's internal discs mounted, I check all discs with disk utility and they all passed
repaired blessed drive and it passed with no problems.
decided to reinstall snow leopard from mini onto mac pro blessed drive.
tried booting up mini from mac pro blessed dive and no problem starting up mini.
tried rebooting mac pro to see if this new reinstall would work and it locked up during startup.
tried to reboot with my original system install discs that came with my mac pro by using the "option" at start to choose startup disc and system locked up after about 5 mins.
also tried reboot mac pro in safe mode again and the screen is now black after several minutes.
I can't remember the exact model of nVidia car I have, I believe it's the 8800 GT (need to look at my receipt ) I bought in in January when this model came out.
anyone else have a video card die like this?
I plan to drag in my unit to a Genius Bar and see if they can test or swap out the card.
    what a hassle.

    See my thread here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2335070&tstart=0
Apparently, the graphics card is dead.
I also booted into Win XP. While the XP interface did not crash (I have the Win 2000 skin active, which obviously doesn't have any 3D stuff), as soon as I launched a game (GTA IV), the system crashed.
I'll get a Radeon HD 4870 now. I just hope, nothing else is broken...
    Good luck!
