Is my computer toast?

MacBook shutdown randomly and never turned back on again. Will not work with charger (tried multiple) and battery indicator lights on the side are not working. Is my computer fried? Or is it easily fixable?

Pay to have your logic board replaced(damage like that is not covered by warranty), or go online & purchase a logic board yourself & replace it yourself. Computers & liquid don't mix and it's very easy to fry a logic board.

  • All in one computer keeps overheating. Now won't turn on

My HP all in one Touchsmart 310 computer has been overheating for the past month. I would shut it down as soon as I hear it (the fan I think) run really loud. Yesterday (July 14th) it was getting loud so I shut it down and I waited for it to cool down. When it was cooled down I went to turn it on and nothing happened. The button didn't light up. I checked the back where the power cord is plugged in and the green light was on showing it was getting power I guess. I read online somewhere to unplug the power cord and hold in the power button for 10 seconds then plug it back in. I did that and the power light flashed a couple of times but the computer didn't start up. Is my computer toast now. I've only had this computer for 3 years and it's been sent to HP twice I think in that time. I had an extended warranty on it but now the warranty has expired. Should I spend the money to have it fixed or just buy a new computer. I was thinking awhile back to buy a new computer now that windows 10 is coming out. I was getting the free windows 10 download for the computer that doesn't work. I noticed on the all in one computer there are no screws on it whatsoever. So I wouldn't be able to open it up to see if it needed cleaning inside. I tried awhile back to clean it through the vents with a straw but no dust was coming out of it. Anyway any help would be greatly appreciated as soon as possible. I can't live without my computer. I'm using an iPad mini to type this and it's not the same as having my all in one computer.

Thanks King_Penguin it worked!   I'm curious though, if these are signs of a bigger issue that I should take into the Apple store for further investigation.   Or is this just a quirk of the iPad?  I've been having the crashing issues consistently for about a month.  Any thoughts?  Thanks!

  • Could not Restore the restricted-segment image

I was having a lot of problems with my G3 i-book. I ran Norton disk doctor, disk utility and apple hardware test. Hardware checked out fine but Norton could not fix the problem even from the start up disk. I decided to re-install original system software. At the end of the installation I get an error message which says:
could not restore the restricted-segment image
    reading block 004CAEB8
Then it says that the imac may not operate. I restarted it and all I get is a folder in the middle of the screen with a question mark in it. I tried to re-install system software a few times and the same thing happens.
Can anyone help? Is my computer toast?

Your stats do not include your iBook. Which model do you have and which version of the OS was it running when you encountered these problems?
Norton can damage any drive with OS X on it, even if you are running it from an OS 9 boot. Keep Norton Disk Doctor far, far away from any volume with OS X on it.
If the error message says that the "iMac may not operate," it sounds like you may have been trying to use your iMac discs to restore your iBook. You need to use the discs that came with the iBook.

  • Unpartition+reinstall without cd or cd drive, just external firewire hd

    1) i have been given an iMac g4 with non-working cd drive, 10.4.11 Tiger, 700mhz which had its hd partitioned into 2 equal parts. i do not have an installation cd as was a give-away from a friend of a friend. i cloned/backed up the whole of part 1 to part 2 using superduper, then moved those backups to the external hd. superduper said it was going to erase everything on that drive if i used it to clone/backup directly to it, so i thought i'd try moving the disc backups over. i want to un-partition the iMac drive without losing all the what is on the computer. (toast, photoshop, protools, dreamweaver, and some other stuff that's purchased that i don't have installation discs for.) trying to figure out is there a way to download the Tiger startup installation files to my external and somehow boot from there to unpartition and install, instead of from an installation cd? i need help.
    2) then i want to figure out how to network the two, using a netgear router that i can't install from cd since the iMac's cd drive is broken.
    3) i'm not a mac native, so i don't know how to do anything.
any help? i've tried since sunday to figure this out on my own.

Hi, & welcome to the forums!
    1. Good that you have it backed up, but did you Clone it to the external drive? Is the external drive Firewire?
    2. You can network them, but Target mode would be how to install using the other's Optical drive...
    FW Target Made
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
I'd call Apple with the Serial number of the Mac and get the Install Discs for that machine, or find where to buy them.
    3. Welcome aboard.

  • Did we kill our flat panel

my wife's 17- usb2 flat panel was having occasional crashes, so it occurred to me that it could use more ram. I didn't feel like opening the bottom, so I bought the computer to a repair shop that works on macs. he put a stick of kingston memory in the factory-installed slot bringing up to 1 gig. we brought the computer home and turned it on. It was fine for a half hour when it suddenly went dark (not asleep, dark). We restarted and got an "Open firmware" window and a graphic that looked like either scribble or a thousand computer chips. I restarted and heard a squeal (like a high D), then got the open firmware window. A few restarts later, we got the computer running, but there were odd lines through the screen.
at that point, I shut it down and opened it up and replaced the ram back to the original, carefully using my torx screw driver. I closed it up, turned on the machine and it worked fine — for twenty minutes when it went dark and this time refused to wake up.
I opened it again and rechecked to make sure the ram was slotted. it was. turned it on, got the chime and nothing, as if it won't access the ram or anything. I don't hear the disk drive turning, just the hum of the machine. I tried command option O-F (someone had success with that), but no luck.
anyone have any suggestions? Is this computer toast?
    thanks for any advice,
    jeff

Take it back and have that stick removed, the new RAM. Sometimes bad RAM or incompatible RAM will do that. Worth a shot.

  • LG BE06LU10 Blue Ray burning problems

    Hi everybody,
I don't know whether I can post my question here at the FCP directory, but I try in any case.
Problem: I can't burn Blue-Discs any more with my LG BlueRay burner BE06LU10.
In the last one and a half years, I burned 3 HD Blue Ray Discs with this burner successfully.
    What happens:
    • In FCP I exported the edited video in HDV 1080i50 format (1440 x 1080, 25 fps)
    • Export was successfully and I can dissplay the video in the Finder or when I double click the video is is being properly displayed on the computer screen. So I may conclude that the video is good!
    • I use Toast-10 Titanium Pro, with BD plug-in option for burning.
    • After start up of Toast, I placed the video in the main section of the screen and the Big Red Button on the lower right comes on and the first image of the video is shown as well. So far so good.
    • When there is NO disc in the LG burner, Toast shows a selection of the two burners, eg either the Pioneer DVD burner of the Mac and the LG DB burner.
    • After selecting the LG BD burner and pressing the Toast button, I get prompted with a screen indicating how many copies I like to have and the writing speed.
    • By placing a blank BD disk in the LG burner, I click record.
    Now here comes my problem:
    • The tray is closing but a screen appears which may also shows a comment like "Please insert a blank disc" and "Waiting for writer" in case I did not inserted a disk in the first place.
    • The burner keeps on spinning and makes a clicking sound about every four seconds. So it seems that either the burner is not being recognised by the computer or there is some sort of communication problem between the Computer, Toast program and or LG burner.
Can anyone please advise what to do?
    Thank you,
    Regards Hans

There was a firmware update for the LG burners towards the end of last year. I believe it was to do with compatibility between burners and the latest media.
    Might be worth trying that:
    http://www.lg.com/uk/support/product/support-product-profile.jsp?customerModelCo de=BE06LU10&initialTab=drivers&targetPage=support-product-profile
(Click on "Drivers and Software" ---> Version "YE05".)
You can see your current Firmware Version under System Profiler, but....
...there is a gotcha: the updater is Windows only - you'll have to beg/borrow/steal a PC to connect the drive to temporarily, to do the upgrade. At least it's a USB-connected external - and is easily moved between computers.

  • DVD+R plays on some computers, not on computer burnt on if done from Toast

DVD+Rs only play on my G5 if they were burned in DVD Studio Pro. If I duplicate them from Toast Titanium, then they don't play on this computer. They do play on other Macs and PCs and in DVD players. Anyone have a clue?

    No, it's not.
You are creating a data DVD the way you are currently electing to.
Instead use the copy TS Video election.

  • Toast Crashes My Computer

I'm not sure where else to post this. I'm using a PowerMac G5 dual 2.0 GHz with Leopard. When I try to use Toast to convert mp4 video to DVD format (so I can watch them on my TV), 75% of the time the computer hangs. It'll do the encoding fine for an hour or two, then everything freezes and I need to reboot using the power button. Other times, it finishes the encoding, but freezes half way through burning the DVD. It's pretty frustrating, so any help is greatly appreciated!

    budopo wrote:
What format do you use Quicktime to convert to?
I'm using Toast 8.0.5. ffmpegx works better, but can also hang, if that's of any significance
You might do better with Titanium. I only use it on my Intel boxes, however, so I can't tell if it would help

  • Battery toast or my computer?

hello, so my macbook has a little problem there is a black x over the battery icon so i assume its not charging plus the battery lights on the bottom are not flashing. but..... when i put my battery into another macbook it charges fine. another thing that behooves me is that when i close the computer it goes into sleep mode but will only awake if i plug it in. also once awakes i can unplug the magsafe and it will run for as long as the battery has charged in the previous computer but says 0% even though it works for awhile. so i do know what is going on please someone help me!!!!1
    jason

Well since you proved that your batter is fine, sounds like a pram/nvram/smc problem, or a preference corruption.
    1. Reset your NVRAM and SMC.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
    2. If that doesn't help, delete and trash your energy preferences.
    /User/'yourusername'/LIbrary/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    3. If that doesn't help either, come back here and let us know.
Oh and the macbook won't wake from sleep if it thinks the battery is dead. That's why you need to connect to the power supply to wake up. This is normal behavior, so don't worry about it.

No. You can download much or most of the content that you have already purchased as long as you use the same Apple ID. There is no way to sync the two devices.

  • Is there a keylogger or tracker on my computer?

Hi, I have reason to belive there might be some sort of spying software/keylogger installed on my computer without my consent. I am 18 and the laptop I'm using was purchased for me by my mother about a year or two ago. She's one of those paranoid mothers who logged all my aim chats and stuff as a child and I'm afraid she is still set in those ways. I think, however, at 18 I deserve my privacy on my computer. Sometimes when I'm talking to her she likes to joke that she should go through my laptop and see what I'm drawing (I do alot of art on my laptop that I don't like to show people cause I'm self-concious about my work.) and when I tell her she couldn't get on if she tried she makes this mocking face like she knows something I don't. This has made me very paranoid as I really don't like the idea of her snooping through my files and stuff. Shes always boasting about how good she is with computers, but I once made up a bunch of computer gibberish non-sense and she tried to look like she knew what I was talking about...So maybe she is just bluffing? I was looking though /Library/LaunchDaemons and found the .plist file relating to the program Undercover which moniters your laptop in case it's stolen, sends screenshots and takes photos with the webcam. I never installed this program. I DID install the program PREY just in case someone ran off with my laptop in Starbucks or something. What I want to know is if there are any other keyloggers or trackers installed on my computer so I can get rid of them. I ran some commands in terminal and these were my results-

I don't do anything horrible on my computer but I also don't think I should be being watched 24/7 like a child.

  • Just installed Mavericks and my computer crashes 4-5 times a day now.

Hi. Just a few days ago I finally gave in and upgraded to Mavericks (10.9.5) from 10.6.8 as there was some software that I needed to use that necessitated the upgrade. Since I've upgraded, my MacBook Pro crashes at least 4-5 times daily. I am not doing anything unusual when it occurs. Usually typing an email, or switching between tabs in Safari or clicking save on a word file. In another post I was introduced to an app called Etrecheck which seemed to me to be a fine way to show all the Mac geniuses on this forum whats going with my computer (unfortunately I am not savvy enough to look through it and understand what's going on). I've posted the report below. Maybe someone can help me figure out what's causing my computer to crash?
The next time it happens I can also copy the report that shows up after the crash and post it as well. Many thanks in advance.
    Problem description:
Since I downloaded Mavericks (10.9.5) my computer crashes randomly 4-5 times per day.
    EtreCheck version: 2.0.4 (89)

  • Old computer died, I am trying to restore my pictures from a Windows Backup

My old computer overheated to the point that the D: drive, where I kept my data, virtually melted.  Fortunately, I am religious about backups, so I had a local computer shop install a new D: drive and restored most of my data from a backup on an external hard drive.  Unfortunately, that drive also failed - the local computer shop was able to get some data off of it, but none of my pictures.  I had a fairly recent backup that did include all my picture files (created with Windows Backup and Restore).
I was able to find the Catalog folder and restored it to the default location (C:/Program Data/Adobe/Elements Organizer/Catalogs).  The Organizer does find that catalog.  It contains 2 folders (BreezeData, which contains 422 files in the format breeze-1.xml and a file named BreezeSession.dat) and (syncdb, which contains only a file named .pref).  It also contains the following files:  backupCt.dat, catalog.pse9db, collstatus.dat, face.thumb.9.cache, itemData.mk4, tagstatus.dat, and thumb.5.cache.  However, none of my tags appear in the Organizer.  I have tried repairing the catalog, got the message that there was nothing to repair, and clicked on "repair it anyway", which didn't improve the situation.
Is there another file I need to find and restore to make this work properly?
I have restored some of my actual picture files to the same location and file structure they were in on the old computer.  However, PSE 9 can't find them.  I have tried "reconnecting" files, and get the message that there are no files to reconnect.  If I "import" the files to the Organizer, I lose all of my version sets (and I have a lot of them).  I realize I can stack the original and edited versions of the same picture, but the Editor does not recognize them as versions.  In addition, I lose all my tags.
Is there any way to get the pictures back into the Organizer without losing the version sets and tags?  The Organizer does find the captions i have assigned.
I have already purchased PSE 12, but I thought I would have greater success if I got PSE 9 properly restored, then did the upgrade.
    Any help would be appreciated.

This isn't really a reply, just an update.
I was finally able to fix the problem!  I uninstalled PSE 9 (I should have used Revo Uninstaller, but I forgot to do that, I just used the Control Panel, Programs & Features, Uninstall a Program.)  I then went into the ProgramData directory and removed everything that appeared to relate to Adobe PSE, including the Catalog folder (there was a lot of it).  I restarted the computer and re-installed PSE 9 (I had already recovered all the picture files using Backup and Restore).  This time, when I did Reconnect, All Missing Files, the program itself found almost everything!  I still had a little bit of cleanup to do (mostly duplicates), and I have to re-transfer all of the pictures I have taken with both of my cameras since the backup just before this disaster occurred, but at least I have (I think) recovered the majority of 7 years of photographs.  I noticed while I was doing the cleanup that not every filename (I just leave the IMG_#### assigned by the camera) was there, but I am assuming the missing filename numbers are photos that I either deleted or moved to a folder I call "Trash" for photos that are going to take a lot more time to fix than I have immediately - if they can be fixed at all.
The recovered photos retain the version sets and tags that were originally assigned!
Having been through this, I would encourage everyone to backup their files regularly, and don't forget the directory where the catalog file is stored!  If the catalog file is lost, you are toast!
If anyone has a similar problem, feel free to let me know and I will try to help with a more detailed explanation.
For what it's worth, Adobe was of no help (fortunately we got disconnected before I gave them my credit card number for the $39.99 they wanted to even talk to me about the problem).  Similarly, I have successfully used JustAnswer.com for other complicated problems where HP (the destroyed computer) or Dell (my new computer) couldn't help, but they were unable to help with this problem.
I think I have a little more work to do, including loading my recent pictures, but I plan to start on converting the recovered files to PSE 12 soon.

  • I spilled water on my laptop and my "i", "j" and "k" letters don't work on my laptop. However my main problem is that my password contains an "i" so i am locked out of my computer. Any ideas how I can get around the password and login.

I spilled water on my laptop and my "i", "j" and "k" letters don't work on my laptop. However my main problem is that my password contains an "i" so i am locked out of my computer. Any ideas how I can get around the password and login. I tried the method where you go into single user mode and type in commands, however that method uses some of the letters that are not working on my laptop.

You didn't mention which version of OS X your running but there are password reset utilities provided OS X: Changing or resetting an account password (Snow Leopard and earlier) - Apple Support  or  OS X: Changing or resetting an account password - Apple Support
Alternately you can use an external keyboard to log in and change the password. Make a backup if you don't have one, it's likely that your problems aren't over. If that water continues to migrate downward and fries the logic board your macbook will be toast.

  • You shut down your computer because of a problem

I loved my mac before all this, i have never had a problem since i bought it brand new in 2011. Can someone please help?
