IS MY DRIVE BAD ? HOW DO I REPLACE IT FOR HOW MUCH // ECT...

DEAR EVERYBODY ,
I AM A NEW USER OF ONLY 1 YEAR I LET ME APPLECARE RUN OUT BECAUSE MY COMPUTER WAS RUNNING XLNT WELL GO FIGURE THE SUPERDRIVE DOESNT WANT TO BURN DVD'S EITHER + OR -
MINUS. WELL I HAVE TECH TO REPLACE IT THAT IS APPLE CERTIFIED BUT I DON T KNOW WHERE TO GET THE RELIABLE PART AT A GOOD PRICE, FROM READING IT IS THE PANASONIC UJ845 OR IS IT THE UJ 846 ARE THESE THE SAME DRIVES AND WHICH IS THE EXACT DRIVE FOR A 17 IN INTEL MAC
THANKS FRUSTRATED USER
P.S. SOMEONE TELL APPLE TO STOP USING JUNK DRIVES
THIS IS THE FIRST OPTICAL DRIVE IN A COMPUTER THAT HAS EVER GONE BAD

I know caps loc is the cruise control for the cool, but you may want to check if your keyboard is acting up as well.
In either case, there have always been companies with drivers going bad. My friend is a tech at BestBuy and he says you'd be suprised at the volume of drive failures he sees even though none have happened to him.

Well you won't have very much storage capacity with a SSD that small, also SSD has limited writes, so it wouldn't be good for on-loading and off-loading a lot of files.
SSD isn't being securely erased due to steps to prevent their premature wear, so despite what you do in Disk Utility Secure Erase, your confidential data can still be recovered if you pass the machine on to someone else for instance.
Other than those reasons, small SSD's can be extremely fast, loading your programs and OS much faster. But the real benefit in high speed storage is transfering large amounts of files on/off the computer to ANOTHER fast device. This comes in handy for video and large music collections and so forth.
Since the SSD because of it's limited writes doesn't fit the bill as a large file transfer medium.
If you want to get a SSD drive, you can upgrade it yourself simply by ordering one online at locations like Other World Computing or NewEgg and have a 00 micro phillips head screwdriver handy.
There are instructions over at iFixit for opening your MacBook and replacing the hard drive with the SSD.
Preferably you will want to clone your present boot drive to a external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner, then making the switch and hold option to boot from the clone and then clone from the external to the new internal SSD drive.
Prices of SSD are varied, Apple won't replace it for you
This is currently the fastest SSD availalbe

  • How do I see a detailed view of what's on my hard drive and how much space it's consuming?

I have an early 2007 iMac (3GB RAM) and a 320 GB hard drive.  I'm trying to clear some of the programs and files I don't need to free up space, but I'm not sure how to get a similar look at my files and how much space they take up individually (as I would with a PC).  Under system info I'm able to get the high-level overview, but how do I see a detailed view that I can then edit?

Thanks for your help.  I did just that and was able to get a much better view with OmniDiskSweeper.  I was shocked to find that my MobileSync files were 125 GB of about 270 being used!  Guess I shouldn't be surprised with 4 iPhones and 4 iPads syncing to the same iMac at one time or another -- just kind of surprised Apple/iTunes doesn't make it any clearer that this can turn into a big problem if you don't initially create the appropriate backup settings for your devices.  Thanks again!

  • My mac is runnug out of disk space. Do /i need to by external drives?  how much memory should i get

My imac is running out of disk space. I download a lot of media from itunes. The HD movies and TV shows use so  much space. Should I switch to the cloud, clean up my memory or buy an external memory drive? If i get an external drive how much memory is suggesyed? 1TB, 2TB or more?

Buy an external hard drive on which to save your media. The drive should be large enough to handle your entire iTunes Library plus how much you would anticipate adding to the library over the next few years. Then backup your existing library to the external drive: iTunes- Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive.
After you have backed up the library to the external drive you can configure iTunes to use the library on the external drive in iTunes > Preferences > Advanced. Change the path to the external drive. Once you do that quit and relaunch iTunes. It should now be using the library on the external drive. Now you can delete the library on the internal hard drive to free up the space.

  • How much would it cost to replace the optical drive

I have a 48 month old mac pro. I use the optical drive quite a bit for listening or downloading music from my cd's. There is now a loud mechanical noise coming from it , and it is now very choosy about what cd's it wants to play. It is also getting very difficult to eject without having to restart it several times as well as pressing subsequent buttons.
I have read several discussions on these pages and have gone through several elimmination processes . Including cleaning discs.
Now i fear that there is no option but to replace the optical drive.
How much am  looking at spending and although its not a perfect remedy , is it cheaper to buy an external drive as much as that would pain me.
    Thank you.
    Ray.

Optical drives for 2008-2012 Mac pro desktops use the standard SATA connectors. That drive

has those connections. Thus is should be directly replaceable with your original drive.

To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application SuperDuper. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html  You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.

  • How much drive space it utilized straight out of the box of a 15" MB Pro?

I'm looking to get a MB Pro w/ Retina, but struggling with paying $500 to go from 256GB of on board storage to 512GB.  I realize its specially designed for the system and all that, but it still seems a bit bloated as far as price.  So in order to make a more informed decision I was wondering how much of the 256GB storage is utilized by the base image from Apple, like I open the box turn it on and check the drive properties how much free space is left before I make any changes/additions to the system?  I saw that OS X Mountain Lion only requires 8GB of storage space and coming from the Windows world I'm not sure how accurate that is.  All I need on board storage for is my software apps (Lightroom, PS Elements) and a bit of temporary storage for photos until I can transfer them to the NAS at home.  I would need about 100-150GB of available storage typically to be safe for a trip/session.
So any insight to exactly how much disk (I know its not a disk) is left available straight out of the box would be greatly appreciated.  Oh and I'm in Afghanistan right now otherwise I'd just go to the Apple Store and check for myself.  Looking forward to coming over to the Apple world, but hoping I can do it for $500 less.

Aw, man, you'd love some of the stuff you can do with the CS6 suites! I use Lightroom as well, but also PS, InDesign, Illustrator, and I'm just beginning to learn Dreamweaver and Fireworks. I love layers in PS - allows for so much control and creativity!
You'll have plenty of room - glad to see that you've already thought ahead in re storage and backup. I just think that the price Apple charges for SSD is absurd. 256GB will be something that you can live with for a long, long time.
Good luck with your new Mac,
    Clinton

Yesterday I opened up the iMac and reinstalled the drive to make sure that it was not an alignment problem.   I still can not eject.   When I try to eject the drive makes noises like it is ejecting but the disk does not come out.
How do I solve this problem?

    Hi again Hal
Link to your other thread > The slot loading CD/DVD drive in my...: Apple Support Communities
You have also tried resetting the PRAM as I suggestion in your other thread...?
See resetting the PRAM > About NVRAM and PRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.

  • How do I remove one failing hard drive from raid set and replace with new one

Last Friday apparently one of my raid drives started failing.
As I mentioned on this forum I started getting continous beeping.
I was finally able to get the raid working at a degraded level.  I ordered a replacement hard drive which is arriving today.
(In the meantime I made twice daily backups of my work.....)
Below was the message I got from the browser based raid software:
    Blahblah 09    1000.2GB   RaidSet Member SamSung HD103SJ
    Blahblah 10    1000.2GB     Free                 SamSung HD103SJ

(See this earlier thread if you wish!)
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/727867?tstart=0
At one point when I did the checked the browser interface I saw the message Failed and Degraded
As I said, I was able to work over the weekend on the degraded system.
This morning I got the beeping again and did the rescue and now I am running a "full raid" without the notice that one raid was "Free".
In any case, the new hard drive is arriving today.
What steps should I take to incorporate the new drive into the raid system.
    I have one OS drive
and 4 tb raid drives.   One needs to be replaced with the new one that I am getting today.
    Thanks
    Rowby

    Harm,
    Regarding your comment:
Re: How do I remove one failing hard drive from raid set and replace with new one
Please tell me how to read the serial number from an individual drive rather easily, without un-installing them:
If you select the proper drive to change out, you only need to remove one drive and look at its serial number...
Step 1: Identify bad drive serial number using Areca's tools
Step 2: Turn off the computer
Step 3: Remove what you think is the bad drive based on following your numbered cable method, marked hot-swap bays, whatever
Step 4: Verify that the serial number matches the "bad drive" serial number from step 1; if it does great, proceed; if it does not match, go back to step 3
Step 5: Change out the CORRECT drive - that's the bottom line for this whole procedure
    Cheers,
    Jim

Type move itunes library into the google serach bar.

My hard drive continually has the floating beach ball and will take massive time to fulfill a request. And then will not boot up...so then I have to do a restore and rebuild hard drive from a past saved time machine version. Works for a little bit...then the floating beachball comes more and more...until it will not boot up again. So then I restore from a previous time machine saved version....and again it works for a day or so ... until it happens again. Now it's happening faster and faster...so I think my hard drive is dying.

    Install iTunes.
Once install, hold SHIFT and launch iTunes.
When prompted, point iTunes to the correct location for the iTunesLibrary.itl file which should be in the iTunes folder under <user>/Music on the old drive.
