Is my DVD 9 project too full ?

Hi all,
I am currently completing a DVD 9 project which after importing all the assets the full project size is 8.52 GB used 16.6 MB free.
The thing is a while ago i have heard that as a rule of thumb there should be at least 4% space left on the disk or the DVD may not work however when i run a check project test i am not served any error messages. is this because Encore has already calculated this 4% into the project?
I would be grateful if someone could offer some advice in this matter as i fear that i will encounter problems when i send the DLTs off for replication.
I hope someone can offer some advice in this matter.
Thanks in advance.
Fitz.

If you can get the DLT tape written, you should be okay. You're certainly right on the wire though.
Biggest problem is likely to be the layer break.
Best thing to do is get the project compiled & try writing to a DL disc - if that works, you should be okay with master tapes

  • DVD Studio Project too big for DVD

Well, I've exported my video and audio out of FCP through compressor and got into DVD Studio.
The movie I'm making is a compiliation of the years 1991-2007 (family film), thou there were no film from some years. So I made a main meny with the buttons "Play Movie" and "Chapters", the "chapters"-button opens an other meny with buttons for all the years. The year-buttons is linked to the different chapters. ie. 1991 is chapter 1 and 1992 is chapter 2 etc.
So there are two menues, the main and the chapter. There is also a "return-to-main-meny"-button in the chapters meny. There are about 15 buttons total and I used the apple simple button for all of them. Then there are some backgound images and of course there is the video and the audio track.
The size of the video is 4,4Gb and the audio is 190Mb, so without the menues they fit on a DVD (4,7Gb) but the menues seems to take up too much space.
How can I make all of it fit to the DVD?

You can build the project and use VTS view to see how much they are taking but if you are applying transitions they can take up room since the transition is being built for each button. So in other words lets say you have picture 1 as a background on menu 1 and picture 2 as background on menu 2 with 15 buttons on the menus, 15 seperate transitions are being made even if each transition is identical.
In other words if you are using 15 transitions on each menu back and forth (or even less) you can go over the 20 Megs rights there (and if they are longer transitions in terms of time that will add more size.)
You can get around this by using dvdafteredit or other editor but not in DVD SP itself
You are pretty close even without the menus, so it can be pushing you over. Anyway what was the AC3 rate? Could get you under there also (and maybe deleting transitions in menus can also help.)
Also keep in mind that filling a disc fully (or very close) can cause issues.
So (depending on how you want to go)
1.) Delete transitions if you do not need/want them
2.) See if there is any room to knock down the audio at all
3.) Encode the video at a lower rate. (If you go this route I would suggest not trying to thread the needle too closely - meaning if the average rate was 5, let's say, in the original code, do not drop it to 4.9 or something, bring it down so you know you have some room, perhaps 4.75 for example, so you do not have to go back through the process.)
What was the total running time of the video? Check this out for calculations http://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm, then bring it down a tad to be safe.

  • How can I tell if my HD is too full to work?

I thought my 17"MBP (purchased from Apple in Sept. 2009) hard drive had died. I've been hearing the scraping, squeaking, knocking, scratching sounds for over a year but never tried to figure out what it was. One night I was typing in a MSWord for Mac document and my MBP was being slow (but not horrible, just acting like a PC. common behavior when I'm working in MSWord) Anyway - all of a sudden it started making lots of the noises I'd heard intermittently before, only this time was lots & for a few seconds (or minutes?) then it froze and just quite.
I hard powered it off and have tried all kinds of safe boot/verbose/fsck stuff - just followed as many directions as I could find. I don't understand what I was doing at all. I do know I have powered up holdling cmd-s/cmd-v/holding shift/ and whatever I did to type fsck... I had to do that one a couple times until it said whatever the instructions said it should say. However, it always got stuck on the gray spinning wheel screen and wouldn't actually boot - and was always making noises.
I took the back off to try to remove what people talked about making that noise. I didn't see/feel anything loose so I just put the back on again.
I just finally got it to boot off my original Install disc - the one that came with the MBP. First time it failed, it gave an option of doing a restart, so I did - and it worked!
    So now I'm in Utilities
                          -DiscUtilities
                            -Mac OS X Install DVD
                              -First Aid.
The directions say to click 'repair disk', that option isn't available to me (it's gray, can't be clicked on).
I'm wondering if all my data is still on the computer though. I saw in my searching before something about 'HD too full and not booting' but now I can't find those directions. Also, I'm wondering if the whole bit about the sounds is coincidental but not part of the not-booting problem?
I can see on the bottom of the 'First Aid' window:
    Capacity: 6.74GB
    Available: 19.1MB
    Used: 6.72GB
    Number of files: 19,307
I am in the fortunate position I am not concerned about lost data. I had my files backed up. If possible I'd rather not re-load all my programs, but not a huge deal if I need to. I am a computer user, but don't "get" technical logic. I don't understand most of what I've done, but I am able to follow step-by-step directions. Any help someone can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Disconnect all peripherals from your computer.
Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963 and restart your computer.

  • Can't get computer up, maybe disc too full?

I knew I needed to delete some things as my machine was running slowly and I checked and the disk was too full. But I hadn't gotten around to it. So today, after leaving it on during the night, the screen was completely black and wouldn't respond. I restarted it several times using the button in the back. Each time it would get to the apple and just never progress, the little wheel turning. I left it several hours once. So I have tried starting it from the startup disk. I tried running disk utility and did get it through "verify disk." It said it passed. The "verify disk permissions" button is grey so I can't do that, for some reason. Is there any way to go in and delete stuff off the hard disk when running it off a startup disk? If not, is there anything else to try before taking it in somewhere and spending money?

When you hook up your new external drive, boot up again with your OS X DVD. Open Disk Utility. Use the Restore tab to make a complete copy of your internal drive to your external drive. Then, while still booted from the DVD, choose Startup Disk from the menu, and set it to boot from your external.
Then log in to your account as normal. Navigate with Finder to your internal hard drive, and find and trash the stuff you want to delete. don't forget to empty the trash.
After you have cleared enough space (at least 10% free space is recommended; i.e. 50GB on a 500GB drive) you can go to System Preferences -> Startup Disk, and set it to boot from your internal.
When that's all done, you can use a program like Carbon Copy Cloner to maintain a bootable clone on your new external drive. Having a clone is an excellent complement to having Time Machine backups. TM to retrieve old files, and the clone to boot up from in case of a major catastrophe.

  • IDVD project too bin for iDVD 6!

I have a project that I successfully burned to DVD (multiple times, too!) using iDVD 5. I just installed iDVD 6, and it successfully opens the project, but projects a size 100MB larger than it thinks will fit onto a DVD!
What happened? What made the iDVD 6 project larger (I made no changes, just opened iDVD!)?

  • Got a new MBP and old external hard drive is too full for backup

I just got a new MBP and got all my data migrated and everything. I plugged my external hard drive in to run a backup, and it apparently is too full to run a backup of the new computer.  Even though all the files are the same (mostly), I guess it's not going to overwrite anything because it's a new computer.  Should I just get a new backup drive and start fresh for this computer.  Should I reformat my old backup drive (and if so, how?)?  Advice?

You should always have two backups of all vital data in any regard. A good 1TB Toshiba USB is $65
If there is NOTHING on the external HD you cant lose, format in disk utility > erase > format MAC OSX extended journaled.
then apply a Time Machine backup to the old HD of your new computer. That will free of a great deal of space.
However you should still have a 2nd backup of data.  2 backups is 1, and 1 is none.

    Hello Pushtheriver,
After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help in this situation. It contains a number of troubleshooting steps and helpful advice concerning iCloud storage issues:

    This may also help:
    Understanding iOS device capacity
You can sync and download many different types of content on your device. Some types of content (such as music and videos) typically take more space than others (such as notes and books). The amount of space taken by an app depends on the app's purpose; complex or graphically intense apps usually take more space than simpler apps.
If your device is near its capacity, you can remove some of the less used content to make room for more.

  • When I plug in my ipad it automatically tries to back up and download all the contents to the C drive - the PC is too full and I have iTunes on an external hard drive, how do I tell the system to do the backup to the hard drive please?

When I plug in my ipad it automatically tires to back up and download all the contents to the C drive - the PC is too full and I have iTunes on an external hard drive, how do I tell the system to do the backup to the hard drive please?

You can open a command prompt by hitting the start button and typing CMD<Enter> in the search box that opens up.
To move the current backup folder from C: to D: type in this command and press <Enter>
    Move "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
Where <User> is your Windows user name.
To make iTunes look for the data in the new location type in this command and press <Enter>
    MkLink /J "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
If your external drive has a different letter or you already have a folder called "Backup" then edit "D:\Backup" accordingly in both commands.

  • Viewing project in full screen?

Im new to Mac and Final Cut Express. Im used to Pinnacle and to view the project in full screen i just simply clicked on the icon in the lower part of the "canvas" screen. How can i do this.?

OK, I was again using my modified ISO Italian layout with the English version of the app. So, now I selected Italiano Pro - a British keyboard with accented vocals sticked where they fit to look like Italian - and it still didn't work. Then I tried British, that is the same version of the app. No way to make it work.
I replaced my Das Keyboard III with the same Apple Aluminium keyboard I had used with FCE 3.5, and no way to have Cmd-F12 work to trigger the Toggle command and recall the Canvas in Full Screen.
Also, I created a shortcut (Cmd-P) in the System Preferences for the "Digital Cinema..." command, but it does not respond to the shortcut, exactly as the Toggle (Cmd-F12) command. Other shortcuts are fine.
But it is not only the keyboard, since the Toggle button does not work even if clicked. It worked flawlessly on 3.5, I can't understand why it doesn't work with 4.0.

  • Unable to playback project in full screen

unable to playback imovie project in full screen.  Full screen button and commandG both do not work.

If no one on this forum is able to step up, please repost on the iMovie forum. When you do it would be helpful to whoever is assisting to let them know the version of OS X installed on your machine and the version of iMovie being used. Without those basics people are simply guessing.

  • Tried to sync ipod but too full - now play counts have shot up?!?

I tried to sync my 60gb ipod classic but a message came up saying it was too full ect.. that was fine, but a day or 2 later i noticed that the play counts and ratings for about 1250 songs (out of 11670) are completely messed up - the play counts of 721 songs have gone up by 512, 426 songs have gone up by 256, 54 songs by 100, 24 by 80, 10 by 60, and i think some of the others have changed too.
It's really important to me to have my play counts!! I've looked all over the internet - some people have had issues with play counts but I haven't found any solution to my situation..
Obviously i know i can reset them, but i want them to be how they were before! any ideas?? or am i being stupid for asking?
    many thanks!

also, what i find strange is that the songs that are messed up have no relation to each other other than a lot of them are in the same albums..

  • Start Up Problems with too full Mac Air

I cant restart my Mac Air after the batterie whent flat after i got message about Start Up Memory Too Full. What do i do now.

You may be able to boot in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight as described here. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can also use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • When I add a quicktime asset directly to my DVD SP project it does not automatically encode to be DVD cmpliant. Says incompatible asset. Any ideas?

When I add a quicktime asset directly to my DVD SP project it does not automatically encode to be DVD cmpliant. Says incompatible asset. Any ideas?

You use the term "QuickTime Asset" like it means something.  QuickTime is just a container ... a QuickTime file could be made from any number of codecs, many of which are not compatible with DVD Studio Pro.
What codec is the file you're trying to import?  Have you considered using Compressor to encode it to the proper format?

  • Convert DVD HD Project to DVD SP (clarification)

I am aware that the subject of this post has been addressed elsewhere in the various forums numerous times; for those who are searching for the answer and come upon this post first, here is a summary of my understanding of things to avoid further searching:
In order to burn a DVD SP project, you must create a new project with your project settings set to DVD SP by default. You can not burn from HD to SP, but you can burn from SP to HD. There is no option in DVD Studio Pro to convert your project from HD to SP, so scratch it and start over.
This brings me to my question; is there any way to bring the basic menu/link structure and such from your HD project (which you foolishly created thinking a basic conversion wouldn't be beyond this software suite) into your fresh project. I haven't been able to get two projects open at the same time, copy and paste from one project to another, or anything to help me reference the menu structure to work. (I can look at the produced HD DVD, but, as we all know, it's easy to lose track of links looking at an end product)
So far, DVD SP has been an extremely disappointing program to me; after struggling with it for a great many hours to get features I want implemented (only to find with research later that the implementation of those features is either broken, or missing), I now find I'll have to start the project over from scratch. I certainly hope they include a conversion feature in future releases.. this is a bit ridiculous.
Anyway, I'm quite frustrated, but thanks for any help which anyone may offer.

As an update, I have located the export->'Item Description' feature which exports a plain text description of the DVD project.
    I changed the entry:
    <key>DVDStandardVersion</key>
    <string>HD</string>
    To
    <key>DVDStandardVersion</key>
    <string>SD</string>
.. now I can open this file with DVD Studio Pro, and I have something similar to my project, but in SD. (I expect some things may be broken by the SD/HD conversion, but those should be quickly ironed out.)

  • How do i Simulate my project in full screen mode? Is it possible?

i can't figure out how to simulate my project in full screen
    thanks.

    It is COMPLETELY possible
You only need to connect a second computer monitor (only supported on PowerMacs and Powerbooks), go to Simulator preferences and select that screen for preview. I use that all the time. BTW, if you get an Apple DVI to video adapter, you can send that preview to a video monitor.
    Hope this helps.
