Is My Equipment ok for High Quality Home Recording?

Hi There,
I have a band and we want to start the process of producing a CD on October this year (choose the songs we have written, groove, arrange, etc.) We want to start recording as early as possible in 2007.
We play mostly Worship at a non-denominational church in Germany and we play Rock/Pop.
I've been using very unregularly Cubase SX 3.1 under Windows but i want to buy a new iMac20 starting 2007. So I've been researching the equipment i would like to buy to make a Budget.... maybe if God wants, find some Sponsors as well.
So maybe you could give me your advice and tell me if with that equipment I could achieve a High Quality Home Recording project ??? Just equipment related, i know there are tons of other things to achieve a good Home Recording project. We will give our Recordings to a Studio for Profetional Mixing and Mastering, we will not do it our selves.
I have some money available for all that but i am neither rich, so i'm on a budget. Somethings i already bought.
Hardware/Equipment
1 x iMac 20" - 2 GbRAM - 250 Disk - ATI 256 Mb (should i get better a 500 Disk ?)
1 x MOTU 828 MK2 - Firewire
2 x Genelec 8030 + 1 Subwoofer 7050B
1 x Neuman TLM 103 (only for voices)
1 x MindPrint EnVoice MK2 (already bought it)
Software
ProLogic 7 (or the newest version on market when i buy the iMac - Cubase will find its way in eBay)
Celemony Melodyne Cre 8 (already bought it - only for voices)
FXPansion BFD (already bought it)
OK... hope i am not forgetting anything. That stuff is the most important for your advice. Please drop your toughts
Cheers, cesar.
Following are our Instruments, but we are not thinking of buying new instruments... maybe somethings for our bassist.
Music Instruments
(Not all the instruments are mine :))
1 x Roland TD12 eDrums (will use it with FXpansion BFD)
1 x Korg TR 76 Keayboard (should i use it only as Masterkeyboard and use the instruments in ProLogic better?)
1 x Koch Multitone 50 W + TS 212 H Cab (it has an amazing recording output, but wanted to record the eGitars not only with the recording output but simultaneously with a mic, is that a good idea? Could I use the Neuman TLM103? or should i get a Shure 57 ?)
1 x Marshall TSL601 (which we want to exchange for another Koch Multitone when we have the money)
1 x Warwick Sweet 15 (thoug we are thinking of exchanging it for a Warwick WC CCL ND8 2x10)
Gitars: We have a 500 something Taylor... really good but i don't know the details since i don't play it and one Epiphoe Custom LesPaul (change the Pickups for 2 Gibson BurstBucker Pro and now sounds like its Gibson Custom counterpart) and a Tokai LP..... hmmmm and a very cheap Yamaha Bass, our bassist hasn't had money to buy something better.
Take care and thanks for your advice and thoughts!!!!
Thinking about buying one

Hi and thanks for all your replies!
I guess i have lots of work ahead of me... I will defenitely get an external Hard Drive for my backups.
About the Audio interface.
Motu 828 MK2 - 730 EUR vs RME Fireface 400 - 880 EUR
Motu 896 HD - 1230 EUR vs RME Fireface 800 - 1300 EUR
What would you recommend me ?
Remember I have the Mindprint EnVoice MK2 Compressor/PreAmp. My Instruments/Mics will be connected directly to MindPrint and MindPrint via SPDIF to my Motu/RME interface. I will record one instrument at a time, so I don't need so many inputs. Just the eGitars will be recorded with 2 inputs.
With this configuration, should i still pay some 500 Extra and get the next level either in Motu or RME ? Is the price difference going to give me really a much better sound to justify those extra 500 ?
Apogee Ensemble - 2050 EUR Is the only Apogee product I can find available here in Germany so far and is out of my league.
From Lynx haven't found anything.

  • Rectangular Pixel Setting: Where? (also tips for higher quality?)

The bottom line: Where can I find the setting -- in Final Cut, in Compressor, or in DVD Studio Pro -- to use rectangular instead of square pixels on export (or burn or wherever)?
The story: I'm trying to burn a DVD for a friend of our kids' jazz concert.  It looks great on computer.  Once in DVD Studio Pro's simulate function, though, all the the performers look slightly stretched.  They look that way on TV, too.  My understanding is that this is due to the difference in computer and TV pixel shapes and that there is a setting somewhere to address it.
These are my settings in Compressor. If that helps.  And, if anyone can recommend settings for higher quality (I'm getting some stepping which looks lousy on big TVs), I would love to hear them

  • What is the best video converter for high quality MPEG-4 for Apple TV?

What is the best video converter for high quality MPEG-4 for Apple TV?

Handbrake won't convert AVI files, But there are many more than those mentioned that will
The choice of conversion software is a personal choice, I have around a dozen applications that will tackle AVI's, however VisualHub is not one of them, not because there is anything wrong with it but rather I have enough such applications in my arsenal already.
I would use mpegstreamclip in most scenarios for what you are wanting to do but maybe not always. It is a good idea to have a few applications to choose from as not all do the same thing. mpegstreamclip has a few more options than some bog standard applications without becoming overburdening with choices.
You might want to try a few applications yourself before deciding on the software for you. isquint is a free limited version of visualhub, you might want to give that a whirl to get a feeling for visualhub.
Be aware though that quality conversions do not happen quickly, claims of being faster than other applications may well be correct, but are usually a trade off against quality. Again you need to choose your software to reflect your preferred balance between speed and quality.
Here's how I use mpegstreamclip, http://web.me.com/gartside1104/z008/Mpegstreamclip.html but your AVI's may well be low quality, you shouldn't set the bitrate any higher than your source file and likely lower, you shouldn't increase the frame size either.

  • Best for high-quality mic wo

Any suggestions please as to the best board to use for high-quality mic (speech) recordings?

    Thanks Steve,
I'm only intending to show it on computer/projector so I think I'll check out ProShow Gold or Producer.
Also, I'm planning on doing zooms and pans.  Is 1000x750 pixels still the optimal Premiere import size if I'll be zooming?

  • What settings do I need for high quality web video?

I've created a video via animoto.com for my website. The video resolution they recommend for web is 432 x 240 @ 15 fps. I used this and it's not as crystal clear as I'd like. Still looks pixelated a bit and I'd like a higher def version. So I downloaded the hi res version (864 x 480 @ 24 fps). This looks great but takes forever to load due to buffering. Then the video stops every few seconds. I understand this res is not meant for web.
What is the resolution I need for best quality & fast loading? I've seen great videos on the web before that loaded very quickly. This is what I'm looking for. I have Quicktime Pro for Mac and can pretty much save in any formats & resolutions. So what's recommended?
    Thanks!

    Hi
    There are some important things.
    • Set down burn speed to x1. In iDVD08 You can do this in preferences.
    • Use high quality media. I only use Verbatim
    • Use right type of DVDs. I only use DVD-R (Single Layer)
    • Best quality - I use Pro-encoding Quality.
    • IMPORTANT: Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Your internal (start-up) hard disk
    • Use a CD/DVD cleaning disk from time to time
    • Don't burn more than three DVD at a time then let Your DVD-burner rest in 15 minutes to cool down.
    Good Luck

  • Looking for high-quality videoconferencing to PC in Italy

I've been using Skype to do piano lessons with my teacher in Italy & between me and my son we are videoconferencing nearly 4hrs/wk with her. I have a wireless broadband connection (with ethernet hard-wire to router from my machine). She has a PC laptop & ADSL connection. Problems are increasing with very bad connections. It was noticeably worse after upgrading my OS in November, but I don't know why. We get unbearable static after a few seconds in audio, and frame rate degrades from about 15fps at the start to 4 or 5fps after half a minute or so with latency of more than half a second. The image breaks up frequently, and we often lose the connection entirely. We end up shutting down the audio and calling her on the landline phone for audio. I've tried various solutions, but am really looking for a much higher quality application, and am willing to pay up to $50/mo. We do not need multi-user capability, just the one connection.
Has anyone had personal experience with other applications? iVisit doesn't look much better, but I haven't tried it & their website doesn't compare it to Skype.

    Hello cynjon
Before you change software, you might want to try to determine whether the problem is with your teacher's system or ISP. Although I do not frequent the Skype Fora and have not checked there, as noted in this iChat AV 3 thread, iChat users have reported difficulty with Italian contacts who use the Italian "FastNet" ISP: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6237921&#6237921
It might also be helpful to know whether your Italian teacher encounters problems similar to the one with you when he video chats with others. If possible, both you and teacher should try Skype video with other international contacts to try to determine whether one system has more trouble than the other. If one system is not working properly, switching to another video chat app may not help your video connection.
If you would like to try some other apps, several cross-platform video conference / chat apps of widely varying cost and capability are listed in Some Applications You Can Use With iSight. Use the links to each app that is of interest to you for info about its features, terms, and instructions.
You might also want to try using your browser with a web-based video chat-room like MeBeam to see if it might work for you. (Click here for Info / Help.)
If someone here has already found a reliable video connection to Italy, I am sure they will suggest it.

  • Low quality DVD outcome.. need help for high quality result ASAP!

    Hi every 1,
(This is my first post, as I only got my iMac 2 weeks ago.. so please be gentle with me :P   )
I have just been asked to turn a Microsoft powerpoint (PPT) into a DVD for "induction training video" purposes with voice overs and backing music. I have a professional music studio so providing high quality audio is fine, but trying to turn the power point into a high quality DVD file is my problem. This powerpoint has timing transitions (fade ins etc) for the timing of voice gaps. When using Microsoft PPT, you can turn the PPT into a Quicktime file which I was going to drop into iMoive then add the music and voiceovers.. this is when my problems started. Microsofts powerpoint doesn't add the transtiions and effect into render Quicktime movie, so I thought as my new iMac has iWork (KEYNOTE) I'd give it a try and to my surprise it all worked and the final mpeg4 quicktime movie result work great _when you look at it on the MAC_.
    1) Problem
I then exported the file into iMovie and then my first Problem arose.... (grr). I movie lost it's sharpness and the images started to have pixelation.. that seemed to pulse in 1 seconds gaps.
I hope this was just an issue with the iMovie preview window and thought once I put it into iDVD and burnt it... the final result may be fine.. but I was wrong and the quality was crap... with the pixelation still there.
    2) Problem
The other problem that came up was the about 25% of the edge of the total screen was cutoff. When i did the original file, I choose 4:3 ratio, and watched it on this..so where did the image size go wrong.. I also choose the "high quality" Quicktime file, but didn't go into the settings in the iMovie in the export section (which I should off), but after check the compression type was H.264.. and I also didn't change any settings in the 'export file' section in KEYNOTE.. this is where I think I must have gone wrong..
So in closing. my questions is:
-What's the best way to turn a PPT into a _high quality file_ so it looks professional once it goes through iMovie and iDVD.. or
    - Should I just redo the whole production using iMovie ( by re doing all the work eg wording, transistion inside iMovie seems like a lot of extra word ) and so not use the PPT at all... and if I do this, then
    - What's sizes, and ratio and compressions should I use for 4:3 ratio TV purpose (eg. whats size should a background image be that I do inside Photoshop, so I can put the transition wording over the top, so I see it on the TV screen and the edge doesn't get cutoff etc.?
I was very impressed with Keynote and would be happy to use this for most of the production.. but am I banging my head againist a wall...re fixing quality problems when exporting files into... can someone shed some light on this for me?
Sorry this is such a big post.. but I thought if I gave you most of the background you would have to ask so many questions.
Look forward to any help any 1 can provide..
    Michael

    Matti,
Thx so much for your help.. it's really appreciated. This is by far the best result quality wise, (but I really am a perfectionist and personally are still not overall happy with the final product) but if my client is happy.. then I will continue down this track for this job.
    ie Create TIFF;'s>Quicktime PRO>iMovie (transistions)>iDvd
You've been a great help and I hope it good enough for the client.
I find the images and wording lose their sharpness only after being imported into iMoive. I could still be probably enhance the quality level of the TIFF's once more, as I did the test slides in Keynote, then exported the 5 slides a individual as TIFFS out of Keynote, then imported the into QuickTime Pro as you suggested then followed your instructions all the way to the final burning of the CD. I also tried doing this in Photoshop using your suggestion of 720x576 images (for PAL) .. pixel aspect ratio to ~1.094 so you can see the correct proportions for 4:3 video output. When creating the new slide in Photoshop there were a few extra settings other than the ones you gave me... _so I would real appreciate what every setting should be when creating the NEW TIFF file in Photoshop for PAL 4:3._ I noticed when I did this the image crispness on the fonts was shithouse pixelated and shadows, even while looking at it from inside Photoshop )
As I tried mutliple ways of importing into iMovie (yours being the best suggestion) I really believe when dragging a TIFF or movie turns to blur on the way into iMoive. You can see the image is blurred from that point on.... _do I need to buy final cut pro or express to get a better image quality result?_
I also tried iMoive7, which I found was great to use video editing wise, but Apples has definitely stuffed up there by not give users a 'time line' to work with in the Audio section... but everything else in the video area was great to use.., but in my situation trying to line up the narration to slide, while having also background music is now impossible sadly.
Also I really like the 3D transitions in KEYNOTE, plus iMovie 7.. do you know if there are available for HD6 or if there's a 3rd party company that has smilar versions
    Thx again,

  • Looking for composers for high quality original music. Needed Urgently!!!

    Hi Everyone

  • Looking for high quality 3rd party TTS voices for OSX

Looking for suggestions for commercial, high quality, 3rd party TTS voices. In the Windows world I was a happy Ivona user, but Ivona does not support Apple products. The best OSX TTS voices I've found so far are from Infovox ... better than the built-in TTS voices ... but no where close to Ivona.

There are additional OS  X voices that you can download as part of the operating system.
System Preferences > Dictation & Speech > Text to Speech > System Voice > Customize.
Download the addtional voices from the list and then select to use.

  • FCE export settings for higher quality video

Hello. I'm a self-schooled newspaper video features producer and relative newcomer to Final Cut Express, shifting from Premium Elements. I've just begun using it to upload videos to my newspaper's finicky web system, which will only accept .flv files of a certain size. My modus operandi has been to export my videos as large .avi files, using Quicktime conversion and DV/DVCPRO/NTSC, with medium quality, with 16 bit sound set at 32 Khz. Then I run that .avi through the Adobe Flash Media Encoder with a frame rate of 15 fps, deinterlacing and resizing the screen to 640 by 480. This procedure (outlined by our former video editor) produces serviceable web quality video (You can see video that results from using these settings at http://wvgazette.com/multimedia). So, two questions: 1) I have created an 8-minute FCE music video for my band and wish to export it at a higher quality (for use on Vimeo) than these newspaper settings. Which of them do I change so that a higher quality video results without waiting all night for a massive file to upload? 2) And wthere might I turn for guidance on better understanding the Sanskrit of FCE video export settings for newbies? Thanks for any help.

The simplest way to produce good quality video for the internet is:-
    1. File>Export Using QT Conversion.
    2. The "Format" window should say, "QT Movie".
    3. In "Use" select "LAN/Intranet" from the dropdown menu.
    4. Click "Save" and when it has finished encoding, upload it.
Do not mess about altering audio settings, frame rates etc.
Using the above settings an 8 minute video would be encoded in around 20 minutes (depending on computer speed) and would be well under 100MB.
    Is that too big?

  • Preparing images for high quality DVD

I've been trying to create a photo slideshow from high quality images(Canon 20D) then burn them to DVD (both 4x3 and 16x9).
I can create the slideshow export to iDVD the burn with either iDVD or Toast.
My problem is the quality, it *****. Example if a street sign is in the image you can't read it. Its OK on the computer but impossible on a TV and its a HD TV.
Now I done it a few time with different setting always going for the best choices. I've also resized the images to 720(hor)x 534(vert) depending on the image orientation for 4x3 DVD.
If iPhoto/iDVD not the solution for the finest quality can you recommend what is?

  • What is the best format to publish/export in for high quality??

    Hii everyone
I designed a brochure in illustrator and every time I publish it for some reason quality is lost.. the image isn't so sharp and clear anymore. Can anyone help??

    no name,
To elaborate, File>Save As PDF, or File>Print choosing PDF/Acrobat Distiller as printer, will normally be the safest way to get everything to print in the right way regardless of final printer. You may set the options for desired quality/compatibility level (high is mostly good). If you have raster images, you may File>Place them as links.
If relevant for the artwork, and if you are only/mainly printing with a non Postscript printer, you may consider using File>Document Color Mode>RGB Color from the start to avoid repeated colour conversions, still staying within the CMYK gamut if the printer only prints CMYK (you can see the Out Of Gamut warning in the Color palette/panel).
    Edit: Crossposting.
For Worst, you will probably need something like a File>Export using JPEG, TIFF, Bitmap, or PNG, using RGB Color Mode and setting the resolution high enough.

Looking for a high quality high capacity replacement battery for my 30GB iPod Photo. Looking for a good price, but constant voltage is more important. They're pretty cheap on Ebay, but I am leery of quality.

With no responses, I found one for less than $10.00 shipped on Ebay from a PowerSeller with outstanding feedback. It has Japanese manufactured cells, has 1300mAh capacity, overcharge/overheat/short circuit protection, is CE and ISO approved, and includes the tools I need. I like the specs, but I realize I'm taking a $10.00 gamble.

  • Open Beta: New toolkit for high-quality plots

I'd like to let everyone know that's we're running an open beta for a brand-new LabVIEW toolkit, aimed at making publication-quality plots directly from the block diagram. In addition to regular line, scatter, and bar plots, this toolkit also supports advanced features like 2D contours, vector fields, streamlines, alpha transparency, and inline math using LaTeX. You can save plots directly to disk in half a dozen formats, including PDF and PNG.
We call it the "Advanced Plotting Toolkit", and it's available at http://www.advancedplotting.com along with example VIs and documentation.  The beta is free and distributed as a standard .vip package with no dependencies.  If you have the time, we'd love to hear your feedback.  That doesn't just mean bug reports... this is an amazing community and we'd love feature suggestions as well.  Comments are welcome here or by email ([email protected]).
I've included some screenshots of our example VIs below to give you an idea of what the output looks like. Btw, there is also a stand-alone demo app (built using Application Builder) that you can use to test-drive the toolkit without installing anything in LabVIEW.

    Intaris wrote:
All depends on performance, will report back as soon as I have numbers.
Performance does not seem very high but I also don't think that is the main purpose. You don't use this to update a graph millions of times per second. Instead, it is mostly used to show a finalized result for puplication quality output or for a report.
The toolkit looks well put together, and contains extensive help. The installation does not add examples to the example finder, so I recommend to immediately download the examples from their web site.
Some features need a more detailed explanation, e.g. the definition of "symlog" for the axis mapping.
My understanding (wild guess!) is that this is a LabVIEW interface to an existing open source graphing package (matplotlib?) and as such is pretty polished. Nothing wrong wit this. The generation of publication quality advanced plots is a weak point in LabVIEW and it is a pain to make your own from scratch (example).
Overall, I like it. Still need to play a little more.

  • Higher Quality screen recording

Hey, I need to make a screen recording. I already have the soundflower trick for computer audio and that helped a bunch, but what I really want to know, is how can I record with QT and get up to 720p quality?
    things I have already tried:
-Basically everything on the app store. there are quite a few applications that CLAIM to be able to do what i want, but none have yet succeded.
-Quicktime pro 7. It's not free and has the same quality issues as QT.
-snapz pro x. now this is an amazing option, the only problem is that the visual effects I plan to record with this are quite taxing when it comes to computer performance, so i need the recording software to display the lag in real time when im recording so i can adjust the settings acordingly. So for example:
my computer (while not recording) can display these affects smoothly. however, when I am recording the FPS drops significantly. quicktime displays this dip in frames to me by slowing down what i see on my display (what will be in the video) Snapz however will continue displaying high FPS while the video i just recorded might have dropped significantly. I know it's a bit of a specific problem, but there you go.
-bootcamping and trying to run fraps. simply doesnt work. the program the effects are on doesnt work on bootcamp. there are other reasons that were explained to me but i cant be bothered to write them here because they are very technical and long winded.
I know this is all very specific but i have one more requirement... I would like to spend $20 or less. I know its a lot, but im depending on the fantastic apple community to come through.
    thanks,
    hemmy1416

I have the same question, and have looked at the answers here. I am not trying to answer your question, just add to it.
I have used snapz pro x and find that I like that way quicktime displays whats on your screen with the same amount of lag that will be in the finished video, while snapz does not. surely there is a way, deep in preferences or maybe even in terminal, that will enable me to take higher quality images in my screen recordings. I find the audio is fine but the image is what I have a problem with. I dont have the 100+ dollars to spend on other screen recording software, and would really appreciate some help.
    thanks,
    hemmy1416
