Is my hard disk about to go out soon?

It seems really slow to me, it is the original HD for my mid 09 13" MBP

You might download SMART Utility to see what it says about the health of your hard drive. Also, you might brting up Disk Utility (on your hard drive in applications/utilities or via Launchpad in Utitlities) and verify your hard drive. This won't correct any errors, but will tell you if there are any. If it finds any errors, go into recovery mode (reboot while holding down command and r keys), bring up Disk Utility and repair the hard drive. While there, repair permissions.

  • Is my Hard Disk about to fail?

I am scared that there is something seriously wrong with my Hard disk or something because the following keeps happening:
I was trying to get a picture from my pictures folder to show on my wife’s Desktop (same Mac). I copied the .jpg file to the shared folder. Then under her login tried to set it as the desktop image. Preferences kept quitting unexpectedly and when I try to open the file I get the above message. Back under my login the picture opens fine in preview. Under my wife’s login it will not even import into iPhoto. I have tried moving the file to other locations.
Eventually the only way I could get the picture into my wife’s folders was to e-mail it.
    Can anyone help?

You need to repair permissions, go to user Applications>Utilities> Disk Utility and repair permissions as each user.
Then get info on the picture and make rue it's unlocked so you both can access it,
    please post back,

  • Firefox 33 is about to come out soon and you should test for problems

Next week, Firefox 33 is going to come out. You should test for problems and have them fixed. In Firefox 32, people had problems with videos buffering at 0:14 and videos buffering when you skip through them.

That is what Beta test versions are for. But sometimes something gets thru.

  • New mac mini, why so much hard disk space used

    Hi All
Just bought a new Mac Mini, 1.4 with the 80gb disk,
After powering up and setting up etc, i noticed that over 10gb of the 80gb hard disk was already used out of the box!!!
How come all that disk space is used, im sure the OS doesnt need that amount of room? I have found a folder of about 1.2gb with a load of garage band samples and loops in, but where is the rest hiding???? Seems a whole waste of space to me??
    Thanks

You have heard correctly, most Mac software, including GarageBand, can be deleted by moving the application (or whole folder if it's in one) to the Trash & emptying the Trash. Some programs may install some support files, but usually not until they are run for the first time. Those few programs that do scatter bits around (can you say Microsoft?) should come with an uninstaller.
There are freeware/shareware programs to remove unneeded language files. DeLocalizer & Monolingual come to mind.
But, since you are setting this Mac mini up from scratch, you might want to do what I do with a new Mac. I erase & reinstall the OS & bundled software from the CD/DVDs that come with it, doing a custom install of both so that I get only what I want. For me, this was important because I don't need any additional printer drivers & I already had full versions of Office & iWork to install.

  • Time Capsule dies when hard disk engages

I have an older-ish 500GB TC and for the last year or so it has been hit and miss on start up. After plugging and unplugging a few times it usually fires up. Now, I am unable to get it to fire up.
The issue seems to come from when the hard drive tries to spin. I can hear it. This has always been the problem. It seemed like the hard drive needed to warm up and after a few times it would and I'd be fine. Now, it goes black at the point of it trying to start up.
Is it 100% a hard drive issue? Why doesn't the wireless still work? Why does it go black?
    To reconfirm:
I am able to plug it in and get a green light.
    The light goes orange.
After a few seconds I can hear the hard drive (or something) try to spin or engage.
    Then the light goes black.
Any help? Advice? I don't mind trying to rip it apart and stick a new hard drive in it. That's fine. I just want to make sure that is exactly what the problem is.
I know you geniuses can help me.

LaPastenague....who repairs many Time Capsules is our resident expert on this. Stay tuned for his response.
Yes,, Bob is right on .. as he is a pretty smart Mac user..
The hard disk is overwhelming the power supply at start up due to its high initialisation current. The power supply simply shuts down as it cannot provide enough current. It could also indicate a hard disk on the way out. The 500GB drives are finally starting to fall over. After 4years in the hot dark insides of the TC it is amazing they still go at all.
Your TC needs a replacement power supply.. I have done a number of articles about how to fix or replace it.
The economics of doing so are probably questionable.. it is really time for new one. They are cheaper than before, with dual band simultaneous wireless .. faster processor and much larger 2TB hard disk. So $300 for a new one, is not bad. (3TB is not good value IMHO).

Actually your TC should be dead these 2years.. when most of them started failing.
Do an ebay search for Time Capsule power supplies.. there is a guy in HK selling new Gen1 Delta power supplies.. I don't know where he got them from.. but they are superior supplies cf the flextronics most of them use. He is selling for $50 which is cheaper than I can do refurbished ones. Apple themselves make no parts available.

  • Re: After Restoring to New Hard Disk, No Windows Update - a Fix

How about this one? I bought a Toshiba Laptop while living for some time in the U.S. Admittedly I was stupid not to create the reinstall disk that Toshiba suggested I create when I bought the computer. So I call them to order a new one after installing a new hard drive. Toshiba USA does not accept a Canadian VISA card (that works everywhere else!) and Toshiba Canada "doesn't carry" the US version and therefore cannot supply me with one. Microsoft claims it's out of their hands. I have a legitimate activation key that only works if I use a Toshiba install disk. I tried installing a regular retail version that has no discernible difference to Toshiba's OEM install and I am getting the "This is not a genuine copy" error message because I am using an OEM key on a retail install. Microsoft's solution is to buy a retail version for $149 CDN even though I own it already. Toshiba offers their apologies for my inconvenience and shrugs with perplexity. Other than the obvious (paying $149 for a new version, which I flat out WILL NOT do) any other intelligent solutions? I will destroy this computer and never buy a Toshiba product again before I will pay $149 for a new OS.

I have a legitimate activation key that only works if I use a Toshiba install disk
Wrong right there. When you restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery discs, no key is necessary. That version of Windows is preactivated.
You cannot obtain an Windows installation disc from Toshiba.

You haven't disclosed the model of your computer. You already paid for the version of Windows that came with it. If you do this right, Microsoft will give you a key to activate that version.
    Which computer?

  • HT4718 I tried merging the empty space on my Macbook Pro Hard disk but it says that there is a problem with my disk and i need to reformat it. What should i do to keep my applications and software + files?

    Hi All,
I was given a macbook pro with parallel windows, and later windows was remove but hard disk space is greyed out and could not be merge and when i run a 'verify disk' it told me to reformat my OS. The nearest service centre is real far away from me and i hope to solve this on my own. I need to keep my applications and files, how do i do so? As some of these applications was given by my company. I need help on keeping my files and reformating.
    Thanks in advance.

Get an external drive and make a clone of your internal, erase the internal, set it for 1 partition (OSX Journaled) and restore the clone.

  • Clicking/tickling sound from hard disk

my macbook pro is making a slight, low tickling sound from right side of trackpad, probably the hard disk. this freaked me out, should I be worried ? I heard it on other laptops, but it's getting really frequent today, is it faulty ?
Message was edited by: phantom 3444

I've got a new Macbook Pro 13" for less than 2 weeks. After a few days of the 1st week, i noticed the "click" sound (occurs every 30 second) from the bottom right of the MBP. I thought it's hard disk problem hence i call Apple and sent it to the authorized repair center. They checked and they ordered a hard disk replacement (not sure if they agree if it's a hard disk failure). I've waited for a week but was impatient, so i decided to get a new Western Digital 500gb 5400RPM HDD and the MBP back without the replacement hdd from Apple.
The result, no sound during installation of Snow Leopard but after using it for one day, the click sound came back. I'm pretty sure it's not a hard disk faulty issue. Can anyone advise on how to solve this ? I've read that it may be due to the hdapm issue, but does anyone notice this problem too ? Thanks.

  • Problem with Startup; Macintosh Hard Disk (internal) won't mount

Hi. I hope you can help me.
I was getting ready to install Leopard on my computer but was stupid enough not to make a backup first. During the installation process, Leopard warned me that for it to upgrade to Leopard from Tiger, it will have to completely erase my hard disk and reformat it. I don't know why that is. Perhaps because at that time, I only had 6GB left in my drive. So, I cancelled out of the installation process. Something happened however and now my PowerPC G5 won't restart. It completely blanks out and shuts down in the middle of the restart. So I restarted using my Tiger install DVD. I then started Disk Utility. From there, I can see that while it can see my Macintosh hard disk, it is greyed out and shown as not mounted. I clicked on the Mount button, but that didn't work. I repaired disk, and that encountered errors and didn't go all the way through. I realize my only option might be to competely erase the drive and install Leopard or Tiger again. Before doing that though, I'd really like to rescue some of the files in the hard disk. What can I do? I have the use of a macbook and an iomega external drive at my discretion.
    Thanks so much!

Diskwarrior has been known to find disks.  Or try Techtool Pro.

    Hello everyone,
My hard disk got crashed and now I need to purchase a new hard disk. I would like to know how to check for the  compatibility. Below are my system configuration.

Is there any option to buy the hard disk from TOSHIBA website???

Any SATA drive that fits a laptop will do. If you will restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media, try get one without advanced-format technology..

  • Hard Disk icon has vanished

The Hard Disk icon has vanished from my Desktop, and the sidebar of the Finder window.
If I use the little path tool in the toolbar of a Finder window the Hard Disk name is greyed out and I can't select it.
I can navigate to it using the Terminal, or the Go To Folder... menu item, but I can't get it to appear back where it belongs on the desktop.
    Any ideas?
    Phil

Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and run the following:
tell application "System Events" to set visible of alias "name of hard disk" to true
    tell application "Finder" to quit
    delay 1
    tell application "Finder" to run
Insert the name of the hard disk between the second pair of quote marks, and press the Run button.

  • Hard Disk Continuous Activity

    I have a brand new K430 Desktop running WIN7 Home Premium with a 2Tb SATA/600 hard drive.
The hard disk access light flashes continually at a constant repetition rate of roughly 1 to 2 times/second (and I can hear the hard drive heads thumping faintly at this rate).
I have no viruses, and Crystal Disk reports the hard drive has no issues.  I ran the Windows Resources utility,  selected the Hard Disk window and monitored the processes & apps doing read/writes to the hard disk. The preloaded McAfee Antivirus Plus occasionally accesses the Hard disk heavily, then goes away. There are other Windows System functions (logging etc) that occasionally access heavily too. All the drive accessing shown in the Resources utility are random with no apparent pattern nor specific repetition rate.
Not sure if this is a Windows issue or a hard disk hardware "feature", but at this rate the hard disk will likely wear out prematurely.
I  Google'd this and found that folks having the issue tried various adjustments/options with Windows drive indexing to no avail. So, indexing does not appear to be the problem.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media. All of the original partitions will be restored, including the recovery partition.
If no recovery discs were created, you can obtain them from Toshiba.

  • Thinking about upgrading my Powerbook G4 hard disk to 160GB

I am thinking about upgrading my powerbook G4 hard disk to 160GB, or even larger if possible...
I have checked the macsales.com website and found this seagate 160GB, is it a good choice? Can anyone suggest a better deal or a better choice...?
but I also notice one thing... it says that any powerbook model prior to 2003 might not support the any hard disk over 120G....
So I am wondering is my powerbook G4 15inch 1.25GHz SuperDrive model able to have a 160GB hard drive...?
    Thanks a lot!!!!!

The 1.25Ghz Powerbook came out in fall 2003, so if what MacSales says is true, then it should work.

  • Should I Be Concerned About My Hard disk?

    Hey,
This is probably really stupid to ask, but I have a question about the Hard Disk on my MacBook... I just bought it the other day and knew it was a 60GB MacBook when I bought it. As of right now it has around 38.74GB available, but that number seems to fluctuate throughout the day. So, I'll be using it and it will be at 38.8GB, goes down to the 38.74, but after I shut it down for the night and I turn it back on in the morning, it's back up to 38.8GB. Is this normal or should I be concerned?
    Thanks in advance...

In your utilities folder there is an application called Activity Monitor. It will show you a pie chart of your drive as to what is free and used.
A lot of space is used up out of the box by things like Garage Band loops, the Jingle library, iDVD, iWeb, and iMovie themes, etc. If you never plan on using some of these you can do a re-install of the system from the DVDs and select custom at the very end to uncheck them. Also there are language translations, printer drivers, etc.
If you want a more granular approach to finding what space is used on your drive how, then you want WhatSize.
