Is my hard disk detected correctly?

Drive: EIDE WD1200JB 120GB 8mb cache (Western Digital)
When I used Gentoo last year I had problems with slow file copying because DMA wasn't enabled. In Arch it feels like the DMA is ok, but I've noticed that sometimes a program will fail to load, but yet rather than crash, it just keeps trying to load--lagging out my system to the extent that my mouse pointer jerks about. The only way to stop the lag is to reset the X server. It is possible that some aspect of KDE is causing this behaviour, but I'm worried that my disk might be the problem. My hdparm direct readings in Gentoo (with DMA enabled) were:
/dev/hdb:
Timing cached reads: 1164 MB in 2.00 seconds = 580.87 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 128 MB in 3.02 seconds = 42.36 MB/sec
In Arch my direct readings for the same drive are:
/dev/sdb:
Timing cached reads: 586 MB in 2.00 seconds = 293.17 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 182 MB in 3.03 seconds = 60.14 MB/sec
Now, you may notice that Arch labels my drive sdb rather than hdb; I don't know whether that has any significance.  I performed the tests a few times to get these readings, so they should be accurate. However, it would seem that despite an improvement in buffered disk reads, the cached reads have almost halved. Also, for some reason I can't easily find out whether DMA is enabled like I could in Gentoo because hdparm /dev/sdb returns only:
IO_support = 0 (default 16-bit)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 256 (on)
geometry = 14593/255/63, sectors = 234441648, start = 0
But no mention of DMA. However a 'dmesg | grep -i ata.*dma' returns:
ata1: PATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0x000101f0 ctl 0x000103f6 bmdma 0x0001a800 irq 14
ata2: PATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0x00010170 ctl 0x00010376 bmdma 0x0001a808 irq 15
ata1.00: ATA-5: WDC WD800JB-00CRA1, 17.07W17, max UDMA/100
ata1.01: ATA-6: WDC WD1200JB-00GVC0, 08.02D08, max UDMA/100
ata1.00: configured for UDMA/100
ata1.01: configured for UDMA/100
ata2.00: ATAPI: PHILIPS DVDRW416N, 1.C0, max UDMA/33
ata2.01: ATAPI: LG CD-RW CED-8083B, 1.05, max MWDMA2
ata2.00: configured for UDMA/33
ata2.01: configured for MWDMA2
I'm assuming that 'configured for UDMA/100' means that DMA is enabled, but why do the cached read times appear substantially slower compared to the readings I recorded in Gentoo?

I suspect that the lags might be caused by KDE afterall, but I'll have to wait and see. See here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions … s.-585290/ for how to disable artsd in KDE.
If the KDE fix works I suppose I'm not really that bothered about the low cached reads, but I would like the peace of mind in knowing that I'm getting my moneys worth from the drive.
In this thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=37547 it is debated whether cached reads are all that important to performance. Nevertheless, others seem to be suffering from significantly lower cached reads, and some claim that it is noticeable.
Perhaps hdparm is just reporting the reads wrong, but I can't make out the readings from Bonnie++, and I don't have another distro installed to compare the readings either.
At least I now suspect why my ide drives were renamed from hda to sda. From 'Persistent block device naming' in Arch Wiki:
With the introduction of the new libata pata support, all your ide hdX devices will become sdX devices at some point in the future.
But is hdparm confused now? It interacts with the drive as if it isn't ide. When I try to set dma:
/dev/sdb:
setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
Just to confirm that my drive is ide:
lspci | grep sata
lspci | grep -i ide
00:11.1 IDE interface: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C586A/B/VT82C686/A/B/VT823x/A/C PIPC Bus Master IDE (rev 06)
Would compiling my own kernel allow me to use hdparm correctly?

  • No Hard Disk Detected after Erasing Free Space

    Hi ,
First I will explain the problem, I will be grateful for your help to solve it as immediately as possible. Thanks in advance !
I have a MacBook Black since 2007, with system specification, 160 GB Hard Disk, 1GB RAM, 2.16 GHz Intel Processor. I had a OS X 10.4.11 Tiger version. I need to upgrade it to 10.6 Snow Leopard. I bought OS X 10.6 DVD Snow Leopard version from Apple Store.
Last night, I save my all the data on external HDD, and tried to install 10.6, and it is installed over 10.4.11 with everything on the internal 160 Hard Disk. I did not want like that. I again started the installation process, I went to Disk Utility, I did some thing with partition, i.e. I created again 160 GB partition. Then I wanted to format, Then I saw some Erase Free Space and only Erase also, I click on Erase only, it is finished in seconds. but I was not satisfied. I saw button Erase Free Space then I click there, then , it takes about 90 minutes, and at the end, I saw a failure message that it could not create the temporary file or something like that I forgot what was written, however, it was a failure message ( it is failed to create etc ) .. ,
Then I saw, that there was nothing in the disk utility tool except the installing 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD. I was shocked, what happened.
Does some body could help me in this regard. How can I get the internal HDD with installation DVD ? What should I do after to erase everthing from my internal HDD, I mean , there should be nothing on it ..,
A big THANKS to you to solve this problem.
    Best Regards,
    Imran Khan

Yes, I just played with Disk Utility, and in the end, I found nothing.
With the installer DVD, when I came upto Menu List, I click on Apple in the upper left corner, There are many menus but in grey, I can't click on them, e.g.
    About This MAc
    Software Update...
    Mac OS X Software ...
    Logout ...
    I can't click them ,
Just for Info, In the Utilities Menu, the list is as below,
    Startup Disk ..
    Reset Password..
    Firmware Password Utility
    Disk Utility
    Terminal
    System Profiler
    Network Utility
    Restore System From Backup,
Here I click on the System Profiler Menu,  After that, I go into deep, there are hardware list,
In ATA ... it shows only  MATSHITADVD-R UJ-857E .. in detail it shows about the installer 10.6 DVD
    and
    In Serial-ATA .. it shows  Intel ICH7-M AHCI ..
I did not find anything about internal HDD of 160 GB.

  • MSI B85M-G43 can't install Windows 7. Hard disk not detected.

    Hi,
I just built a new computer for the first time.  I followed the instructions and did everything correctly. but am unable to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. Hard disk isn't always detected during the installation.
But when it appeared in the "Where do you want to install Windows" list along with system, I tried to format the hard disk and got a message "Failed to format the select partition. [Error 0x80070057]."
Then I restarted the computer, the hard disk no longer displayed in the list, so I put motherboard driver disc and clicked on Load Driver and opened Storage\Intel\PCH_12.0\f6flpy-x64. It loaded, then I got a message saying "To continue installation, use the Load Driver option to install 32-bit and signed 64-bit drivers. Installing an unsigned 64-bit device driver is not supported and might result in an unusable Windows installation."
I restarted again and disabled Driver Signature Enforcement, but it didn't help. I still got the same message.
In the computer case I have these devices:
    - MSI B85M-G43, Socket-1150
    - Intel Core i5-4430 Processor
    - Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz 8GB
    - MSI GeForce GTX 650Ti BOOST 1GB
    - Cooler Master GX 550W PSU
    - WD Desktop Green 1TB
    - SuperMulti 16X DVD(+/-)R/RW 12X RAM (+/-)R DL LightScribe SATA drive
Everything is plugged in correctly. Hard disk connector plugged in SATA 1 and DVD -> SATA 2.
The installation is pretty slow, regardless if i install it via USB or x16 DVD. All except DVD and hard disk are disabled. It's also worth to mention that even DVD and USB aren't always detected in the click BIOS.
So I'm wondering if anyone here can help me? Thanks

    Hi and
1: What BIOS version you have? .. Have you tryed to downgrade/upgrade it already?
2: Have you tryed it in those SATA 2 ports? ...is it same strory?
    - On SATA there aint any master or Slave like on IDE so if you are under same controller it dosent mutter what port you use on what device.
Note: SATA 3 Ports are faster then SATA2 ports, but even SATA 1 can handel your DVD or HDD. So no lose if you need to use SATA 2 ports.
Hope this get you foward! Cheers Mummy

  • Hard disk not detected once, but now working?

    Hi,
I'm Zak, a bit of techie when it comes to playing with software, or re-assembling computers and whatnot. Unfortunately I've got no clue about some other things.
A bit of quick history on my notebook: The fan has been making terrible noises the last few weeks. Initially I thought it was some dust so I got some duster. A lot of dust came out, so that can only be good, but the noises came back after a few days. After some searching I figured the other logical explanation was probably the hard drive going bad. I'm hesitant to send it back to HP because I use it for all my university work and it would really set me back a few weeks to not have it.
So, a few days ago, I booted up my notebook to a "hard drive not detected" - or very similar - message. There were a few options, for f1-f4, they were system information, and 3 different tests (I think). I ran the tests, each one came back fine, noting that there was no OS installed, or hard disk to boot from. I rebooted because I hadn't quite seen it boot up, and wanted to see if there were any other options. Turns out, it started up fine. I restarted once more and again, it did fine.
Next, I scrambled around, backing up all my data, getting together warranty info, installing the HP Support Assistant, etc. I ran all the tests from the Support Assistant and there were no problems detected. Since then I've just been hibernating the notebook when I stop using it, and I haven't encountered any unusual trouble. It all seems fine, but my warranty expires Dec 7th of this year. Is it safe for me to assume the "hard drive not detected" error was just a single misfire? I've read a lot of threads and FAQs on it and it doesn't sound like something that just happens once and goes away. On the other hand, I've never had to use a warranty so am unsure quite how the process works, and like I said, sending it anywhere would put me back in my work.
For the sake of a full post, I have an HP G62-367DX Notebook, running on Windows 7 64-bit OS, and as far as I know there were no changes made between the error and my prior boot. If there's any other information I can provide, just let me know.
Cheers, thank you very much for any assistance, and good day
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

The tests from the Assistant are not as comprehensive or reliable as the full hard drive test in the BIOS....tap F10 as you power up, go in there and find the hard drive test. Run the long form test and see what is says. It is not unusual for hard drive issues to start as intermittent and gradually get more frequent. If your drive passes the long form test you can fairly safely assume it was a one-time gremlin of some sort, but it is still a real good idea to back up. I like the idea of the online backup services and I will name Carbonite only because it is well known and not as an endorsement. There are several more and an external drive is also a good idea.
You cannot put off a reboot forever; you are going to have to confront the issue at some point.

  • Why is my hard disk not detected in my macbook, but detected in others

I'm using the Macbook 13" Retina Display with OS Mavericks
about a few days ago, when i inserted my PQI H568V my mac gave statement "the disc you inserted was not readable by this computer"
then i choose the ignore button(if i'm not mistaken).
Then the next day, when i wanted to check for my files, my macbook cannot recognise the hard drive.
But when i plug it in into other mac, it can be recognised and the data is all still there.
    please help me! thanks

Yes, I have done the backup.
Macbook Pro Retina 13 inch, Late 2013
    OS X 10.9.5
Not only in other mac, but i've tried to mount it in other laptops, it's also being detected. However it isn't detected in my macbook only.
After I chose the ignore button, I didn't do anything, but I only shut down my mac and then unplugged the hard disk.
After a few days, i notice this from my disk utility
That's what shown on my Log at Disk Utility.
    What should I do now?

  • External hard disk not detecting

Hi, I am using WD 1 TB external hard disk and it was going all good till now one day my friend asked for my hard disk as he need to back up some data and connected it to PC. Now I am trying to connect it to mac but mac is not detecting.
My hard disk has all my softwares and other important data.
    Need help ASAP

repair disk just checks for errors
likely its a PC formatted HD, thats why you cant read it
Formatting ERASES a HD, so dont do that to the other persons HD.
check what the format of it is.  If its NTFS youd need an APP like Paragon to read / write to it.

  • External Hard disk not being detected.

External Hard disk is corrupt. It was plugged into an Xbox and fidgetted around. I think the kid playing with it clicked on format but before it could do anything i unplugged it. But in the process this drive is not getting detected any more and all the data on the drive is non accessable. Is there anything that can be done to recover the data?

    but no partition
    Yes, you interrupted a formatting.
Since the "other person" commanded a format (why?), which is very quick operation, youve got a nasty mess as per the HD.
This is why having a minimum secondary redundancy of all data on an external HD is necessity.
Remaining option is pricey data recovery specialists.

  • NEED HELP, old hard disk failed, new hard disk not detected.

My hard disk died, not working, not detected when I restart with the MacOS X DVD and attempt to reinstall.
I have bought a new hard drive, 160 GB ATA - IDE Samsung drive, and carefully replaced it following service manual instructions. All connectors have been carfully but firmly reconnected, and the new hard disk is not detected.
What can i do?? where is the problem??
Thank you very much for your help.

Do you know that the new hard drive is working? As it's new chances are it is, just asking .... do you know it's powering up? If you replug the old not working hard drive in, is it recognized? (this is where you don't put the computer back together, but just replace the hard drive and sort of close it back up, but don't use any bolts close the case). Plus you can feel or clearly hear if the drive is starting up or not.

Just to be sure, go to bios and set everything to default. Save and exit. See if you can now see the hdd in the bios.

  • New hard disk not detected on openboot

    hello guys,
would like to request help if there are any settings i need to enable for a netra t1 to detect the new hard disks that were added on a dell disk array. the netra t1 is able to detect scsi hds 1-3 but not the 8-11. have checked netra t1 manual and it says that it supports both narrow and wide scsi. probe scsi only shows the following disks:
    /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/scsi@2
    Target 0
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318404LSUN18G 8590
    Target 1
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318406LC 8A03
    Target 2
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318406LC 8A03
    Target 3
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318406LC 8A03
the new disks are of the same model. any help is greatly appreciated.

    Hello,
the netra t1 is able to detect scsi hds 1-3 but not the 8-11.
    /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/scsi@2
    Target 0
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318404LSUN18G 8590
    Target 1
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318406LC 8A03
    Target 2
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318406LC 8A03
    Target 3
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318406LC 8A03
This is an incomplete output of probe-scsi. Which of these disks are internal (maybe only ID 0?) ?
Set auto-boot? to FALSE at the ok-prompt. Temporarily insert one of the new disks in the slot of one of the detected disks (e.g. ID3). Is the disk now detected at the OBP ? If it is, there is something wrong with the external chassis.
I assumed that this is a Netra T1 AC200/DC200 with only a single channel SCSI controller.

  • New hard disk not detected when plugged into SUN FIRE X4150

    Hi
We have a server currently set up as RAID-1. There's a need to have additional space for operational needs so an additional 300GB hard disk was acquired and need not be in RAID-1 setup. It was plugged into the server and the server seems to hang i.e. remote sessions terminated, cannot be ping.
Server was powered down, and after removing the hard disk, powered up. Everything is ok again.
We then powered down the server, plugged in the hard disk, and powered it up. Server boot up into the OS ok but the new hard disk did not get detected.
    My questions are:-
    1. Is it possible to add a 3rd hard disk in a RAID-1 server?
    2. If yes, what are we doing wrong or missed?
    3. If it not possible, does it mean in a RAID-1 setup, any additional hard disk to be added MUST also be RAID-1 configured?

    Hi.
This server can be ordered with LSI RAID controller or with Adaptec RAID controller.
They are required different steps for configure disks.
Adaptec RAID controller require first create volume at BIOS level RAID configuration menu.

  • Hard disk not detected on Satellite Pro 4270

I took out the 2"5 hard disk from my SP4270 to transfer data to my PC through a 3"5-2"5 EIDE adapter, the HD was detected by my PC bios and the transfer was successful.
Then I reinserted my hard disk into the 2"5 notebook bay, but I get a "Insert system disk in drive." message.
I checked the boot priority in the setup and it shows a HDD->CD->FDD sequence.
In the bios DRIVES section I see HDD = Primary IDE(1F0H/IRQ14).
I extracted and reinserted again the hard disk, but with no result.
    What could be the problem?

I removed the power connection and I didn't remove the battery, but it was completely uncharged. Could have been the presence of the battery the reason why the hard disk lost partition data.
Anyway I solved using testdisk (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk): it found an error in the partition sector and boot sector, and it was able to find partition data and a boot sector backup and to restore both. Now I have my disk back with all its content.
    Thanks a lot

  • Hard disk not detected by bios

Hi, I have a CQ50-107NR and when press the power button the hard drive light indicator is flashing, but the bios or windows does not detect the hard disk, I have tried several hard disk that work in my other computers, I have been reparing pcs for more than 15 years and am very stumped by this problem. In my experience if the hard drive indicator is blinking that indicates that the laptop has detected it. But for this one not to detect it is confussing. I am repaing the laptop for someone, had to fix a problem with it over heating. If anyone has any ideas on this or had a similar problem please let me know.

It is not that uncommon on that series of laptops with AMD processor and nVidia GeForce graphics. The laptop is a close cousin of the dv6000 series which had a lot of issues back in the 2008 time frame. The chips on the motherboard will not keep a complete connection due to manufacturing flaws and it shows up as disappearing peripherals or dead video. Wireless cards, hard drives, optical drives all can stop working. The only fix is a motherboard repair or replacement.

Please can anyone help? Many thanks.

    Hi,
I would suggest removing the HDD from the notebook, place it in an external caddy - an example is on the link below - connect this to another PC and see if you can access and back-up your files.
