Is my Hard Disk gone?

Hi~
I posted a topic on unrecognizable Hard Drive about a week ago. And people recommended me to replace new Hard Drive. But before I go to buy new HD, I want to know why'hardware Test'program passes 'Mass Storage'test.
When I did hardware test, everything was passed with no errors. But installation program still doesn't recognize HD at all.
If anyone knows why it is, please let me know.
Thank You.

Thank You, Jim for responding my post.
I tried all troubleshooting solutions from apple support center including your suggestion.
At disk utility option, Hard Drive wasn't recognized.
I only see CD drive.
Except 'Hardware Test', not any program or utility recognize my Hard Drive. What my question is why apple hardware test program passes 'Massive Storage' check O.K., when other utility programs don't recognize it.
I want to know what is the functions of 'apple hardware test. If my Hard Drive is gone, shouldn't this test respond to HD test with error code?
I can't give up my HD until I know why... (^_^)
If you know about it, please let me know.
I want to be free from this questioning....(^_^)
Thank YOU~~~

  • Hard Disk Gone!

Suddenly after 2.5 years of problem free use, my G4 iBook can't find the internal HD. I've replaced the drive twice with drives that I know work, at first they would format and take an install, but would soon show failure, unrepairable by Disk Utility. (When removed they repaired easily, and show no problems as externals)
Now I have the iBook working fine from one of the drives as a Firewire External, the other is back inside, but can't be found even by Disk Utility.
I presume some connection on the logic board has gone bust, is there a way I can test this?
All of the connections appear sound.
    cheers
    Richard

It is certainly possible that the ATA bus on the logic board has failed and that is why the drive is not seen. Another possibility is that the cable has popped out of its socket on the logic board. I had the experience of mine doing that when I took it apart, as the sticky edges of the tape over that connection became stuck to the shield to the extent that the plug stayed with the shield rather than in its socket. Another possibility would be a defective cable, but you should be able to inspect the cable carefully for breaks or damage.
I don't know of a specific test for the ATA bus itself--it seems that is what you end up concluding after eliminating all other possibilities.
    Good luck!

  • External firwire hard disk gone down

Hi, I have been using a Glyph GT050 external firewire drive with 2 different iBooks without any problems till yesterday, when I daisy chained it with a MOTU Traveller audio interface. Using the Traveller as the first item in the chain, neither the Glyph or my Lacie drive could be seen by the iBook.here I reconnected without the Traveller and the Lacie was there, but not the Glyph. After looking through advice I have tried zapping the PRAM, connecting it to another mac (a mac mini) and changing the cable. Nothings working; in System Profiler the Ibook can't see that theres anything there so I cant run any sort of software restorer on it. All other firewire devices are running fine, unfortunately the Glyph is the one I need!
Is there any way I can get it running again and are there dangers about daisy chaining firewire devices that Im not aware of?

Sometimes if insufficient power is getting to the bus, or the bus needs resetting, or a firmware update, you can only connect the drive directly to the computer, or worse, you might have to use Prosoft Data Rescue, or Alsoft Disk Warrior to fix the drive. Prosoft Data Rescue can bypass a bad bus sometimes and recover data, but won't make a difference if your directory is bad. If your directory is bad, Alsoft Disk Warrior can help.
I strongly recommend in my FAQ that you always backup your data:

  • Hard Disk (Macintosh HD) gone from my desktop and Finder sidebar.

Hello. My hard disk is gone from my desktop and I can't find it in Finder as well. I tried logging into a different user account and it doesn't show up either. I don't know if a cache file in my first account might be the problem. Also if I try Shift>Command and press C, it is not there either I just see my network icon. Any help is appreciated.

I'd recommend that you check for Mac User Group(s) in Orange County.  That's where you'd likely find a diehard Mac fanatic who might want to add your 6500 to his/her collection.  Even if you got nothing for it, it would be better than e-cycling it.  I upgraded my 6500/275 with what was a "large" hard drive at the time (15 GBs), maxed the memory at 128 MBs, installed the 512K L2 cache card, a better ATI Rage Pro PCI graphics card, a USB PCI card, and an internal 56K modem.  With it running OS 9.1, it did all of the pre-OS X stuff I needed it to do.  As I previously mentioned, it's a nice-sounding MP3 player.  Internet Explorer 5.1.7 (the final release from 2001) kept it useful for surfing the web up until 2005, when it became too outdated/incompatible with many web sites.  Unfortunately, the demands of the internet and the need for a modern browser, as well as faster processing to digest it all, are what retired many older Macs from active duty.  So my (2) 6500s and (3) 6400s (same tower design) sit in storage.  There is one concern that I'll pass along: The motherboard has a 4.5-volt alkaline battery, that's a small, black plastic cube, secured in place by velcro.  If your 6500 has been disconnected from electricity for a long time, the battery will undoubtedly be dead.  Unlike the many Apple computers that used a small ½AA lithium battery (that I've never seen leak when completely dead), the 6500's battery can and usually does start leaking.  Because the motherboard sits vertically oriented on its side edge when installed, the leaking battery will drip alkaline solution down the board, corroding any components in it path.  I've seen motherboards ruined from this.  If you're going to give it away or sell it, you might want to pull the motherboard (remove the two machine screws on the rear I/O panel, next to the pull tabs).  Slide out the board and unplug the battery's small connector (has red & black wires), then lift up on the battery, while holding down the "toothed" velcro mount with something non-conductive, like a popsicle stick.  Once it's free, dispose of the battery.  If you're interested, a replacement can be purchased for about $5-$7 from battery specialty retailers - it's a Rayovac 870 or 871.  Even if you don't replace it, removing one that will eventually leak is a good idea, (hopefully) before any damage is done.

  • Powering down/sleeping hard disk when gone?

I really have never thought about this until recently that I've been leaving my desktop on 24/7 (acts as part server here or there too). I am wondering:
    1. Is ability to power down or "sleep" hard disks when not in use for extended time (like sleeping/gone to work/etc.) reliable in linux? (Maybe silly question but just checking )
    2. Is it worth it/makes sense? I mean, would it warrant the effort to set up the process, that it would be good for the hard disk and/or save power...
    Thanks a lot fellow Archers

    1. I don't really know whether it is reliable, but this thread assumes that to much spin downs can shorten hdd life:
...you could use smartd to tell you how many times the hdd spins down per hour. if its too much you could use hdparm to turn off or decrement power management on the hdd in order to preserve its life
    2. I have a device to measure power consumption directly at the electric plug. My rather old desktop computer consumes normally, when no tasks run, 65 Watts. If I put my only hdd to standby with hdparm, consumption decreases to 60 Watts. Now just make some calculations...
(Actually cpu has a larger effect on energy consumption.)

  • Macbook Pro hard disk has gone

I got the spinning beachball on my MacBook Pro 15" Intel Core2 unibody 2009 OS X 10.6 and then crash.
I zapped PRAM and did Disk Utiliy from Install disk but no hard disk to be seen.
I took out HD and put it in external USB drive, it works perfectly (I can even boot and great, no data loss)
I tried brand new HD inside the Macbook and this can't be seen either.
    Help!

Likely something major unless you're lucky and it's a cable (do they have those in MBPs?)  If it's out of warranty and you're comfortable poking around inside of computers you could investigate, otherwise take it to somebody who does know computers.

  • Is my hard disk telling me it gonna die?

    Hi all,
I have all sorts of troubles since I install (after initialising it, with zero write) Snow Leopard on my MacBook 2.'GHZ, 2008-11.
Now, a newly created window opens in the top middle of the screen (instead of some pixels from the left).
I also get tons of errors using the MacBook (most of the AppleScripts created after the install) works or not, I never know before executing them if they will work or not (most of the time, they just do not work).
Extensions off boot leads to the same experience.
Disk Utilities: check or Repair hard disk find no error, repair the permission does not modify anything.
Every advice will be checked carefully.

Yes, an external is a perfect way to test a new system. Then, when you're sure it's OK just clone it over to your internal using SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner.
I believe what Barry is suggesting, is that you reapply The 10.6.3 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
When you reformat, make it "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"

  • Desktop hard disk icon gone

After installing Yosemite update (10.10.2 (14C78c)), hard disk icon on the desktop has disappeared.
Of course, I checked "Hard disks" from finder preferences.
How can I make the icon visible?

Obviously the harddrive is still working
You may have a corrupted .plist file, but which one I don't know. Someone else might.
If you plug in an external drive does that Icon behave the same way? Or does it work normally?
If you right-click the icon when you see it and select "Get Info" and leave it up does it stay when the icon goes away?
    Is the name Macintosh HD?
Try changing the color of the icon - see if that does anything.
Lastly, create another user with limited power and see what happens to the harddrive under that other user.

  • I think I have a virus - hard disk full and administrator rights gone

I think I have a virus - my hard disk is full allthough I only have about 20G of 60 used. I cant install a virus checker as I have lost my administrator rights (when I check in accounts, I am just a "standard" user. This means I cannot install any software as it will not let me run the installer program - says incorrect username / password

You may have a corrupted disk but you do not have a virus. Boot using your original system installation DVD and run Disk Utility. Repair the disk.
If you have no Administrator accounts at all, follow this procedure to create a new, temporary Administrator account from which you can fix your normal one.
Power on or restart your Mac.
At the chime or grey screen, hold ⌘ and S on your keyboard to enter single-user mode.
    At the prompt, type
    fsck -fy
    and press Return.
This is a simple check for file system integrity and is optional. It will take a moment or two to complete. Wait for it to finish before proceeding.
Type the following exactly as written, one line at a time, each line followed by the return key. There is a single space preceding the first "slash" ( / ) character in each line:
    mount -uw /
    rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    shutdown -h now
When you restart the machine, it will take you through the entire setup and registration process all over again. When you do so, create a brand new account with Admin privileges. Give it a simple and disposable name since you will delete it later. Do not choose the option to transfer or migrate information to the Mac.
When it completes, log in under that new account, change your previous account back to Admin, and log out.
Log in using your old account, which will now have its Admin privileges restored. Delete the throwaway account you just created.

  • Window for my hard disk looks entirely different suddenly/icons gone!

When I usually open the icon on my desktop for my hard disk (the internal hard disk), on the left-hand side is usually the standard array of icons for pictures, movies, etc. etc. (and when I open other folder icons on my desktop, I still see those same items - nothing has changed there). But when I now open the icon of the internal hard disk, all of those usual items (and the whole look and feel of the window) has changed. The only icons on the left side are network, the hard disk icon itself, and the icon for my MobileMe "air" disk (I think it's called iDisk - whatever... you probably know what I'm talking about).
I can't figure out what happened?! I ran disk utility and it supposedly did repairs that were necessary on my system. I rebooted and restarted and even shut down entirely and then restarted again. I really miss that usual interface giving me all of those options so easily available. What's up here and how do I fix????!!

  • Help!! I need to recover my photos on my failed iMac hard disk

I need some help in recovering my photo's on a failed imac hard disk......
The history to this is that I received the cursed flashing folder with a question mark (?) when I tried to boot into my normal OSX Maverck on my imac - I researched this and there was a possibility of a hard disk error.
I booted off the Mac OSX Snow Leopard CD to access Disk Utility to see if I could repair the hard disk - no luck! I couldn't repair it.
I then installed a new version of OSX Snow Leopard on a external hard disk connected to the Imac through the USB - I then upgraded this version of OSX Snow Leopard to OSX Maverick. This allowed me to reboot the Imac off the external version OSX Maverick. I could subsequently see the failed hard disk on File Manager and have access to all the files on the main account. I don't however have access to other accounts (my wife's) where I store my photo's as there is a folder with a red minus sign denying me permission - I tried to change permission on these accounts but when I right click on the folder and select "Get Info" the permissions tab is greyed out denying me the ability to change permissions.
How do I change permissions on the failed hard disk from my external copy of OSX Maverick? How do I get access to those files so I can receover the photo's?
My ulitmate goal is to recover all the information on the failed hard dsik so that I can reformat the hard disk.
By the way, I tried recovering the photo's using Time Machine but the last history I have is December 2011 which is 2.5 years out of date - something must have gone wrong! I don't want to receover this and lose the most recent photo's on the failed hard disk. Another question with Time Machine - if I perform a back-up today, will I be able to recover the data after I reformat the hard disk - my worry is that I'll only be able to get back to where I man now which is not being able to access the data on the folders that I don;t have permission on.
I really appreciate the groups assistance.
    Lightning_rabbit

I can think of several ways to get the files off.
One is to create a root (super user account) user whcih will have access to everything. Another thing is to duplicate the other accounts that were on the failed drive on the new one and then log in as that user and move them over.
A link to create the root user is here:

  • How can I download all my iTunes music after wiping my hard disk without going into each of the 100  artists listed

Hi - I have recently had to wipe my hard disk which meant all my music has gone with it so I have an empty iTunes music library.
The only way I can see of doing it is
    - going to the store
    - selecting Purchased
    - then I get a list of artists or albums down the left hand side
    - have to select each individually and click Download All on the bottom left - for over 100+ its going to take forever ! Is there an easier way ?????
    Thanks !

You can only sync your device to one iTunes library at a time. You can either copy the music from the library on your other computer to the one you have loaded the new CDs onto, or you can purchase an external CD Drive and load them to the iTunes library you are currently sync'd with:

For syncing, I am not familiar with the drag and drop method. I have always used the normal sync process:

iTunes 12 for Windows: Sync iPod, iPhone, or iPad

  • Hard Disk Not Exist help please

Hi, not sure if this should be in Recovery or Hardware or Operating Systems as it involves all three!
I have an HP G61-110SA running Win 7 64 bit; product no. VR523EA.  Also have serial no if needed.  One problem is, as the laptop is 6 years old, it's hard to remember what came with it.
Whilst using on Thursday it suddenly froze and ctrl/alt/del didn't respond so i held down the power key to turn off.  When I rebooted, I got "PXE-E61 Media Test failure; check cable.  PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.  No bootable device -- insert boot disc and press any key".
I don't have a boot disc as the OS came preinstalled.  So here's what I've tried so far by reading other similar problems in here.
    - Ive taken out the HDD and reseated it.  Reboot then said Hard Disk Not Exist.  Tried reseating again.  Same message.
    - Created a bootable Ubuntu CD and ran that - no response.
    - Created a Ubuntu bootable USB and that has worked except Ubuntu isn't showing the HDD so I can't retrieve anything.
I can however connect my wireless network and at least use Ubuntu in the meantime.
I've ordered a new (same) replacement HDD (a Hitachi 320GB 2.5").  So next problem is how to reinstall Windows 7 without a recovery CD?  Did the old HDD contain the recovery partition drive or would that be located elsewhere thefore still be accessible when the new HDD is installed?
If not, I'm assuming I can still purchase recovery discs from HP?  I know I should be able to create my own recovery discs however, the MS sticker on the bottom of my laptop beside the laptop details, has become too faded to read the important bits!  All I can see is "Proof of License, Certificate of Authenticity, Microsoft Corporation 2005" and "Label not to be sold seperately".  Any letters/numbers are long gone.  So would I be able to find these any other way?  My friend (an IT Manager) said something about DBAN being able to read all that from the HDD but not if it's fried?!
Next problem - I was also using Office 2007 (think it was Home Premium).  Either this came preinstalled (unlikely?) OR it came with a 30 day trial which I could purchase the full version & download the full version from online using a link within the trial?  I think this is what I did because I have no other way of obtaining Office for Windows 7 and yet whatever version I had, had about 3 user licenses because I also installed it on my son's netbook.  I do have Office XP discs for my previous desktop PC (but couldn't have used those surely on Win7)?
And just to add a gripe .... although I certainly got my money's worth out of my old laptop, I'll now have to buy a new one - which I consider a treat - BUT I'm choking at the expense of replacing all the software I need!  Anything I buy new will be Windows 8 which none of my old software was compatable with - same as when I have to previously rebuy it because none of my XP software was compatable with Win7!  But on the plus side, I'm assuming if I install my new HDD on my old lappy, I can also install Ubuntu to the new HDD so at least my 11yr old son can browse and surf on it via Ubuntu.
Can anyone answer/help with any of the above problems?  Many thanks in advance.

  • Hard disk not being detected / Finding compatible replacement

    Hi,
I have a late 2007 macbook (white). I was using it when it froze while listening to itunes. I've pressed the power button to turn it off and turn it back on.
Unfortunately it did not boot. I've inserted the leopard upgrade disc and booted with the C pressed.
It entered the installation and I selected the disk utility. Unfortunately it only shows the DVD drive and not the HD. I have a time machine disk and inserted and it recognized the external disk but not the internal one.
I am assuming the worse scenario that the primary HD is gone. Since I am nowhere near an apple store/repair center I'd like to know what kind of extra steps can I do in order to confirm my assumption and if that's the case which HDs are compatible?
I found some steps to replace the disk (http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/MacBook-Core-2-Duo-Hard-Drive-Replacement/514 /1).
    Regards.

    Start by:
How to run hardware diagnostics for an Intel Mac
Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours. If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.
    Some "common" error indicators:
    SNS - sensor error
    MEM - memory error
HDD - hard disk drive error
    MOT - fan error
Shut the computer off for 5 minutes to an hour. Restart with the Installer Disc and see if DU now recognizes the hard drive. If so check the SMART status. If it says "Failed" then the drive should be replaced. Otherwise if the drive is still not usable then you should do the following:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
