Is my harddrive now dead?

I was updating software this morning, following one of the automatic prompts, and the powerbook froze. I waited. Nothing. I turned it off and back on, to get the folder with the question mark. Oh dear. I run disk utility from the installation disk. No dice. "Invalid Key length" "The underlying task reported faliure on exit (-9972)". I start up in single user mode in teh hope that the '/sbin/fsck -fy' command might slice through the problem, but it just keeps looping a line saying it can't execute that command. Is it worth paying out for diskwarrior, or is this now kaputt. Fortunately I have a good backup schedule so I shouldn't have lost anything crucial. Would wiping and re-installing be my only other option?

Mark:
I think purchasing DW is a wise decision, as it can be used for maintenance and repairs on a continuing basis.
In terms of backups, you present solution of backing up certain files to .mac may be sufficient for your needs.
Cloning your entire HDD to an external firewire HDD does offer some distinct advantage.
* For one thing, a bootable clone will give you an emergency startup HDD, or one from which you can boot to run Repair Disk in DU on your internal, and vice-versa, run DW and other diagnostic and repairs.
* In case you internal HDD fails, you will have an exact copy on your external, both for emergency booting and/or for cloning back to you internal.
* If you use SuperDuper you can make full backups/clones free. If you register your SD, you can use the SmartUpdates feature which does cumulative updates in a fraction of the time taken for a full update, and you can also schedule your updates for regular automatic updates.
If you want to consider this option, please post back for further options.
ali brown mentioned your internal HDD capacity. A too full HDD can lead to directory corruption and consequent loss of data, so it is an important question. You should have 10% - 15% of total HDD capacity free (avilable) to avoid running into those issues.
Thanks for posting back with an update. Please do post back with further questions or comments.
Good luck.

I saved photos from my Macbook Pro onto my Iphone (using itunes, 4 years ago). My macbook is now dead and I need to get the photos I saved off of my iphone 3GS transferred to a pc.  Any help...  From my PC I can only access "internal storage"

The iphone is not a storage/backup device.  The picture sycn is one way - computer to iphone.  The photos are also reduced in size when synced to iphone so they are not of the original quality
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup of your computer.
Have you failed to do this?
If so, not good at all, you can e-mail the pics to yourself - keep in mind they will never be of the original quality

  • How can I see the last location of a now dead ipod touch 4G that had find my iphone turned on?

How can I see the last location of a now dead ipod touch 4G that had find my iphone turned on? I can see my macbook but I cant see the last location of my ipod touch. I lost it a few weeks ago and figured it would show up. But it has not and I need it again for my job. Please help.

There is nothing you can do now. There are apps available from the app store that would give you that information if installed before it was lost/stolen.

  • New iphone 6, never been dropped or water damage. suddenly does not charge with any chargers. I have the verified apple charger and it does not work, have tried 3 others and still doesnt work. phone is now dead. wont charge, whats wrong?

I have a new iphone 6 (64 Gb) that i have had for roughly 2 weeks. Last night i plugged in my charger that came in the box with the phone and plugged it into an outlet that is not used for anything else. My phone suddenly stopped charging and gave me the message that the accessory is not supported. The box of the charger seemed hot at the time. Thinking it was a faulty cord, i borrowed a friends charger today (also the original apple charger) and it would not charge and gave me the same message. I tried three more chargers and still no charge and i got the same message every single time. My phone is now dead and will not turn on. Can someone explain what is wrong? And if i am going to need a new phone and if warranty should cover it since it was not user caused damage

warranty will cover it. Did you try only by changing the power adapter or did you change both cable and power adapter?
if you did the latter, see this page: https://www.apple.com/support/iphone/repair/battery-power/
you'll be able to contact Apple Support from there.

i just wanted to know if i can download the Mac version and use that cereal number to activate it?
    No.
Serial numbers are Mac only or Windows only. There is a platform swap process (from Mac to PC etc) but only for CS6.
As a CS5 owner, your choices are to either pay to upgrade to CS6 for Mac or join the Cloud.

  • Ipod synced with old pc now dead, can I keep data while syncing it with new Mac?

I have an old iPod with 8 gb music on it. It was previously synced with a PC whose HD is now dead, so the iPod is the only place where the data is still available. The iPod was not attached to an Apple ID back then. Can I attach it now to my Apple ID, synch it with my new Mac Book and still keep the data on it?
    Thank you in advance

    Yes you can

  • Running a Mac G3, having been using a Laserwriter Select 360, but it and two others are now dead. What is the next best or better printer to use?

I am running a desktop beige Mac G3 and have been using a Laserwriter Select 360, but it an two others are now dead.
What is an equal or better printer to use with the Mac?

Hey, BD, I looked at Brothers last night in connection to this questiona and it looks like their newest/current laser print-only units go back to 10.4 but no further.
Brother is the best hope but the OP may need to look for an older model still in stock. For example, for our older Brother HL5250DN, they still show OS9 drivers:
    http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public/us/us/en/dlf/download_top.html?r eg=us&c=us&lang=en&prod=hl5250dn_all
Gary, web-check for stores that still have older models on teh shelf. You can also look at "newer-but-not-new" and then use the Brother site to check for OS9 drivers.
Founds some of my model on eBay:
    http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=Brother+HL-5250DN
We paid US$199 for ours new about seven years ago. It's been a real workhorse and trouble-free. Well, except for the time my wife tried to feed it a odd paper stock that was not on the printer's official diet!
A Beige G3 consideration: The Big Beige doesn't come with USB ports. You must add a PCI USB adaptor card, and the ones that worked in the Beige are harder to find today.
However, the Beige has built-in ethernet so if you get a printer with an ethernet connector, you will be in bisiness with neither the expense of an extra adaptor card nor the occasional buttheadedness of USB printing. The "N" in our Brother model designates it as a network printer so it has an ethernet port. Many others do also.

  • Recovering files from a drive that is now dead

Ok, if I missed this somewhere, sorry. How in the heck do you restore a file using Time Machine from a drive that has gone belly up? I had an external FW drive die on me yesterday. I thought, Mmm, good test here for TM. Well, much to my dismay, when I open TM it does not show the drive that I need to restore from. In other words, the drive that is now dead, who's data I need to restore somewhere else, no longer shows up in the time machine restore area!
I tested this by disconnecting another external drive, and attempting a resotore. Nope, doesn't show up either. Plug it back in, it shows up. Am I missing something here, or is this just a REALLY stupid design?
In the end, I have managed to restore the files by finding them on the TM drive and copying them somewhere else, but this is ridiculous. Isn't the whole idea of a backup system to be able to actually use it to restore files in case of disaster? I mean, if having a HDD die is not a disaster, I'm not sure what is.

OK... if that's what you want, it's trivial.
You can do it via AppleScript and the Finder:
    tell application "Finder"
set oldFiles to every file of entire contents of disk "Volume Name" whose creation date is less than ((current date) - 30 * days)
      delete oldFiles
    end tell
but the Finder is notoriously slow in dealing with large numbers of files and folders. If the disk is large (or, more correctly, if there is a large number of items on the disk) you may be better off with a shell command instead:
do shell script "find /Volumes/VolumeName -Btime +30 -delete"

  • My iPhone 4 will not charge and is now dead.

My iPhone 4 will not charge and is now dead.  I updated the software about 2 weeks ago but since the phone is dead I can find out which version I have.  It started giving me the prompt "this accessory does not support charging this device".  I tried charging in my car, two separate wall chargers and on my MacBook Pro.  Have never had a problem charging it before.  When I would try to charge it, I would get a green battery icon with a plug in it, indicating the battery was fully charged.  I now have it plugged into a wall charger, it shows the lighting bolt and nearly drained battery but the phone will not turn on.  Any ideas?

    Hi,
You probably need to do this...

My phone will not charge (4S).   It is now dead and I cannot charge it or turn it on.   Any ideas?

Clean iPhone charging port with clean dry toothbrush. If there is Warranty or AppleCare, make Genius reservation or set up service and take or send to Apple for resolution. If no coverage, try cleaning again with small amount of Isopropyl Alcohol. If all it needs is battery, battery replacement program with Apple is $80. Replacement iPhone with Apple is $199 for perfect iPhone 4S exactly like yours. Otherwise replacement parts to consider are battery and charging port assembly with flex cable.

  • My phone won't charge and the battery is now dead, it is not the charger, what can I do?, My phone won't charge and the battery is now dead, it is not the charger, what can I do?

MY iphone4 won't charge and the battery is now dead. It is not the charger, as I have two and they both charge my iPad. How can I fix my phone??

This sounds like it could be something to do with the pin connector in the problematic phone - or something internally at least.
I'm no expert but I do know that you should seek help from official Apple store. Do not be tempted to open this up yourself as it could invalidate any warranty you might have.
My advice is to take it to your nearest Apple shop. They can look at this and replace if within warranty?

  • HT1430 Ipod touch (5th generation) w/ lines across the screen - now dead.

My son's Ipod touch (5th generation) had lines across the screen. I turned it off using the home + on/off button reset, but the apple never came back on. Now it seems to be dead. Not dropped, not completely drained, no water damage. Just dead. Any ideas?
I have also tried plugging it into my Macbook Pro, and iTunes does not find it.
    ITunes is up to date.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Mains power cut to house - iMac now DEAD

Today I turned off the mains power to change a light bulb in a room that has given me some problems with sparking in the past.  Unbeknown to me, my son was using my iMac... (no, I failed to check properly, now I am suffering, believe me..).  After I switched the power on, my son exclaimed "Well, now the computer won't turn on!"  We have a surge protector which would have been on and working, but as the computer - a 17" intel duo core iMac purchased new in mid 2006 is old, and the surge protector is the same age, I am sick with worry wondering what it could be, and there are no repair shops near us open tomorrow, or even in our town!  I have to wait a week, and travel 100kms to the apple service specialists.... This computer is home to all our music (massive amounts my son has on there) and my photos - thousands, a serious hobby.  As well the computer runs Final Cut Pro Studio software, as we do a bit of video editing.  I have backed up no files, always meant to get around to it.....  As the computer is older, the main thing that devastates me at this point is my photos - a life history really, and thousands of hours too, photoshopping, etc.....  I have tried to computer in different power outlets, tried turning on, off, unplugging, all I can find recommended on these kind of sites - but to no avail.  The screen is black, and not a sound can be heard.  Completely dead.  Not one sign of life in the 8 hours since.....  I have been reading about PRAM batteries... this computer has had a massive amount of use, daily and in the house of serious creative insomniacs - for six years now, so almost daily serious use, and as yet just two dead keyboards, no other problems.... I got some extra RAM when it was purchased.  But recently it has not liked shutting down (it hasn't) so it has been pretty much permanently on, with the screensaver up,..... could this suggest a dying PRAM battery?  experts please, this internet reading has done my head in, now I have to wait a week!!!!! to know if our photos and music can be recovered.... if not the computer itself revived....?
Thank you for any help.  I know, I am SUCH an idiot for not checking all electronic devices were off, but as we know, this MAC hasn't been turning off recently...

Here is what Apple says to do with an iMac that won't start, it's from the owner's manual.
If your iMac won’t turn on or start up   Make sure the power cord is plugged into your iMac and a functioning power outlet.
Restart your computer while holding down the Command (x) and R keys, until the computer restarts. When the Mac OS X Utilities pane appears, select an option to repair your disk, restore your software, or reinstall Mac OS X and Apple applications. For more information, see “Repairing, Restoring, or Reinstalling Mac OS X Software” on page 44.
42 Chapter 4 Problem, Meet Solution
Press the power button (®) and immediately hold down the Command (x), Option, P, and R keys until you hear the startup sound a second time. This resets the parameter RAM (PRAM).
If you recently installed memory, and your iMac sounds tones every five seconds, make sure that the memory is correctly installed and that it is compatible with your iMac. Check whether removing the memory you installed allows your iMac to start up (see page 38).
Unplug the power cord and wait at least 30 seconds. Plug the power cord in again and press the power button (®) to start up your iMac.
If you still can’t start up your iMac, see “Learning More, Service, and Support” on page 54 for information about contacting Apple for service.
