Is my HD beyond repair?

After installing Mountain Lion last week my MBP tarted to perform badly. Ocassionally Finder failed to respond, something that never happen before ; often, time machine was unable to finish the task of backing files, error received 'TM used by another application'; another USB drive I had crashed to the point I can't 'see' the volumen on the desk top.
I verified permissions for “Macintosh HD”, and got this:

2012-07-29 18:40:34 -0700:
Twice I used the disk utility in the recovery disk to perform disk repair as instructed. It never gave me a message confirming disk had, or had not, been repaired.
I then trien to re-install Mountain Lion, but was not able to pass to the next step after accepting  the licensing req. - the forward arrow was grayed out and non responsive.
I understand in the past the 'incorrect number of file hard links' were caused by a bug in the system files of the recently launched OS (see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1196001?start=0&tstart=0)
So, I wonder: is my HD drive damaged to the point that I need to replace or  this  could be something caused by a bug in Mountain Lion?
Thank you for any help, and I'm looking forward to reading your comments.

This sounds like a software issue, create a new user and login to it and see if your issue pursists. If it doesn't then it's not your hardware but something you've installed (possibly even ML)
I've heard of Cnet something or other doing this to Finder with ML.
if it pursists in the new user, reinstall ML after all of this to see if it won't fix anything (after repairing and verifying disks and permissions) in the recovery partition. To get to the recovery partition restart your computer,  hold CMD+R down when you hear the boot up chime. Open Disk Utility first (verify your boot disk and repair if needed) and then close it and reinstall ML.

  • I cant get itunes on my new laptop.  My laptop says I have to remove itunes from another computer as I can only have it on 5.  Problem is that apart from my ipad, I no longer have the others as they were either broken beyond repair or lost.  Any ideas?

I am not good with computers.  I am trying to get my iTunes onto this new laptop but it says I am only allowed to have it on 5 computers and I must take it off one to ut it on this new laptop.  Problem is, apart from my iPad, I have lost one laptop and two have been broken beyond repair so I am unable to take it off!  Anyone any ideas?  I have tried to get iTunes support but cant get past the "date of purchase" as I can only guess when I bought my ipod (2009)

    Hang on...
You can only authorise the songs you purchase from the iTunes Store to play on five computers.
You can download and install iTunes (the iTunes programme) onto as many computers as you wish.
    Two different things.
Assuming therefore, that your problem is that you have authorised five computers, but now no longer have some of them, you need to de-authorise all your computers and then re-authorise the computers you still have.
To de-authorise your computers, go to your account in the iTunes Store and look for the Deauthorise All button.

My ipod shuffle (1st generation) will not restore. It says it is corrupted(error 1442) Is it possible to correct this problem, or is it beyond repair. It worked last  time I used it on my laptop with Windows Vista. Any help would be much appreciated.

Im actually tilting it up where it cinnects to my iPod, not where it connects to my computer, and i have tried three(yes, 3) different cables, one of which i bought brand new. still nothing, and i've also tried different USB ports on my computer,....nothing. Could this simply be a hardware failure of somekind? maybe a physical problem...i mean, why would i have to tilt the cable in order for my computer to actually read my iPod? im looking at the USB connector on my iPod (maybe it's my imagination, not sure) it possible might be bent, the little metal part in the port.

Serial numnbers are platform specific so you will not be able to use it for the Mac if it was initially designated for a PC.  YOu will need to perform a platform swap.  See the following for information:
    Change product platform or language
You can swap languages/platforms for a latest version product if you follow the instructions at the following link:

If you are asking what happens when you delete an iCloud backup, it only deletes the backup from your account.  It won't do anything to the data on your phone or in your iCloud account.  If you don't need to backup you can delete it.  (If you no longer want to back up your phone to iCloud, turn iCloud backup off in Settings>iCloud>Backup.  Then your phone will back up to your computer each time you sync it with iTunes.)

  • I phone 4s water damaged beyond repair

Hi everyone, perhaps someone can help with my dilemma. Much loved i phone 4s was dropped down the loo....exactly. It's damaged beyond repair. My problem is finding a replacement. The phone was bought by my daughter from her older brother, and was a much prized possession. It had 64gb and was priceless to her. Her birthday's coming up and I'd love to find a way to get another one for her, but they aren't around anymore. Can anyone suggest a solution? Any site I could buy a refurbished one for her, that would be trustworthy?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Contact Apple. They will do an out-of-warranty exchange on that 4S for £ 166.44 if you're in UK, or check your country's pricing by going to Apple - Support - Service Answer Center  and change that to your own country, then look under Warranty and Service Pricing.

Told by genius it was beyond economic repair so i bought a new one,
    BUT!!!!!!
in an attempt to sell my liquid dmage machine for spares i gave it a try last night.....and it has booted up fine! thanks apple for telling me i needed to spend £800 on a new machine.

It may boot now but fail in a while. Or it may have needed to finish drying out. Impossible to know without having my hands on the system. But (saying this without having seen the computer and so just going by my experiences with systems that have suffered spills) I'd have probably made the same diagnosis as the tech did. Any liquid spilled in a computer may cause permanent damage, and any liquid other than water can leave a residue that, if it doesn't cause immediate problems (once dried) may well cause problems down the road. Apple's techs are also often pushed to be a bit more conservative about such damage, since Apple would have to honor the warranty (or at least a 90 day repair warranty) after the repairs. An independent service center might have offered less-expensive options.
I think you're much better off with a new system; you can trust that one whereas you would have never been able to trust the old system unless all the old parts were replaced. If it continues to work without problems, you can undoubtedly sell it, though I'd advise that you warn potential purchasers about the spill as it could cause failures down the road.

  • Is my iPhone beyond repair?

I dropped my iPhone 4s in water Friday. It was completely submerged for a few seconds. I pulled it out and dried it off as best I could. I put it in a bag of rice for 39 hours. After taking it out the iPhone was unresponsive. I put it on my charger and the dead battery screen flashed. It has been charging for 1 hour. When I press the home button or the power buttin, the dead battery screen just flashes. I noticed the red indicator for water damage. Is my iPhone beyind repair?

It might be possible for you to get a replacement iPhone after you make the Out of Warranty fee payment.
It is not covered by the warranty but it is not classified as beyond economical repair.

I would advise that you go to an Apple Store near by.

  • Macbook beyond repair?

I've owned my macbook for the past 2.5 years with little problems beyond some fraying at the edges.  Then it shut down on me unexpectedly the other night, and since then it has not worked the same.  Startups take longer times, around 5 minutes now, the computer freezes up when normally it would run fine, sometimes requiring a restart.  I checked my data activity when it has occurred and the disk and memory seem to be fine.  Also I ran a diagnostic and it told me to do the disk utility at startup and that found nothing wrong.  Should I look into repairing this machine, or should I admit defeat and start looking for a new laptop?

you should bring it to an Apple store or AASP and have them diagnose it.  When they give you an estimate, then you can make a decision.  I wouldn't dump it just yet.

  • Pissed off beyond repair

How can you sell someone something and not give all the information to the person and not understand the fustration when you drop a bomb on them that it is going to cost $150 to pick your phone up. Total bull,  unprofessional and complete rediculiousness . I will not stop I have a brand new phone that I can not use because it is messed up. I paid for insurance and was never told even the day I went in for repair that there was going to be a deductible. Complete bull

    Hello Allisionturner,
I am very sorry to hear of the disappointment you have experienced with your smartphone Geek Squad Protection plan.  I am very sorry if the information regarding the plan's deductible on repairs not covered under a manufacturer's warranty was not explained to you.  I agree that this is important information to have.
For this reason we provide terms and conditions to all our customers at the time of purchase.  Our associates are usually quite good at providing the highlights, but there is a lot of information and we want to make sure you have it all.  If you no longer have a copy of your terms, they can be found at www.GeekSquad.com.  For a direct link to the terms and conditions page, you can click here.
From what I can tell, it looks as though you have cancelled your service agreement, so there would be no additional action we could take.  I am sorry we could not provide a better experience for you.  Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

  • Ipod screen is broken.   is beyond repair? how much does it cost?, ipod screen is broken.   is beyond repair? how much does it cost?

    Help me please!

Apple doesn't offer a menu or repair services except for replacing the battery.
Apple's out of warranty or not covered under the warranty "repair" price pays for an exchange.
    http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/service/faq/#warranty7
This 3rd party repair company charges $100 to replace the glass only - if the LCD is not damaged.
If the LCD is damaged also, they charge $200, which is the same as Apple's repair price that pays for an exchange.

  • Broken beyond repair?

So here is what I'm facing right now and REALLY need help. I plug in the usb and it automatically detects it and says its in restore mode. Meanwhile the screen on my iphone is black. I click restore (4.1) and it runs up to the end where it says verifying iPhone software or something like that. I must mention that during the entire restore in itunes the screen is white on my phone. When it gets to the end of the restore it gives me ERROR 6.
While its unplugged I can't turn it on or anything
tried everything as far from doing the holding sleep/wake and home for 10 blah blah blah to giving it the evil eye!
Need your help PLEASE as I have no idea what to do...

right so I finally got a chance to go in and talk to apple...
Let me just say I am seriously not happy with Apple anymore. I love the phone but the customer service part can &*^% themselves for all I care.
Went in, guy looks at my phone, and because I've had the screen replaced (not by apple, but how would he know, it was an OEM replacement) he put up a fuss about even doing anything. So after a few minutes of basically arguing with the rep I got him to hook it up to the comp to have them run the diagnostic. Well, basically he plugged it in, looked at screen, didn't even run the diagnostic, and said; and i quote "I'm sorry but we no longer consider this an iPhone since it has been repaired outside of Apple." He then walked off and moved onto the next customer.
Now don't get me wrong its a 3G model...but still..its 2 years old...don't give me that BS Apple...just because I don't want to pay 200$ for a new screen when I can get the iPhone 4 for 150$...
So needless to say I refuse to go back unless its for a warranty covered thing. And I ended up getting an iPhone 4 through a friend of mine who works in Rogers. Apple didn't want to help me that day to upgrade my contract "because they were too busy to deal with contracts"...
Very unhappy with the service Apple...hope you smarten up or you won't have any customers in the end
