Is my HD completely dead or can it be saved?

Hi everyone,
I have a MacBook Pro (13 inch, Mid-2010) running OS X Mavericks 10.9 and it seems the HD has died. I'd be incredibly grateful if anyone could offer me some help and advice.
I was using my MacBook as usual this morning. I had a few work documents open and was checking my email in Safari. Safari crashed (not entirely unusual but much less common since I updated to Mavericks). I then noticed that the cursor had disappeared and none of the keyboard or trackpad gestures were working. I held down the power button and did a hard shutdown. I left it for about a minute and powered it back up. After about 30 seconds, the Apple logo was replaced by a stop/prohibited sign and it was clear It wasn't going to startup. I tried it a few more times before resigning myself to that fact that something was clearly wrong.
I Googled it and found a lot of other people who had experienced the same issue and that it means the OS X installation has become corrupt or the HD has died. I tried the resolutions suggested on the Apple Support page (http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2570). These are the results of what I tried, in case it provides any further useful information:
Disconnect, test peripheral devices and network cables
I didn't have any devices or cables connected so this wasn't really applicable.
Perform a Safe Boot
This didn't work so I tried a Safe Boot with progress. This produced a terminal-like display which said "Still waiting for root device" at the bottom and the stop/prohibited sign appeared in the middle of the screen.
Reset the NVRAM/PRAM
I was able to reset the NVRAM (or at least it behaved as described in the support instructions) but it then displayed the stop/prohibited sign when I tried to boot up afterwards.
Check your cables and power source
It's a MacBook and it was nearly fully charged so this wasn't applicable.
Remove third-party RAM and internal hardware
I haven't modified the machine at all since I bought it.
Start from your Mac OSX Install disc; use Disk Utility
This was actually the first thing I tried but it wouldn't boot from the DVD. I then tried the other methods above. In desperation, I tried booting from the DVD again and this time it seemed to bring something up. It brings me to a Mac OS X Snow Leopard installation. I opened Disk Utility and the only disk that it displays is the DVD drive with the install disc in it. My MacBook's HD running OS X Mavericks is nowhere to be seen.
Is my HD well and truly dead? Is there anything else I can try or will I need to take this into an Apple Store? If I bring it to Apple, will they be able to retrieve anything from the HD (foolishly, it's been a while since I backed up)? I'd really appreciate any help with this.
Many thanks,
Daniel

OK... there may be a little hope. If you got in once and now can't, it could be a thermal problem. When the drive has this, it fails when it gets hot. I'll tell you what I would do at this point.
1. Just shut it down for now. More heat won't help anything.
2. Order an external 2.5 enclosure and buy a new hard drive. This would be a good time to upgrade to an SSD if you've thought about it. I have no idea what size your current drive is. If you need some help selecting one, let me know. Here's the enclosure.
http://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-2-5-Inch-Aluminum-Enclosure-EC-TB4P/dp/B005EIGUD4/ ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1393429730&sr=8-3&keywords=2.5+enclosure
3. Once you have the new drive and enclosure, you're going to replace the old drive with the new one. You need a Torx T6 and a Phillips 00 screwdriver for this. It's pretty simple.
4. In this case, you'll have to install Snow Leopard from the original disks then go through the upgrade process to get back to Mavericks.
5. Put the old hard drive in the enclosure and see if you can read it. If so, copy whatever you need off of it immediately.

Can someone help please..? After down loading to the latest software verssion 5.0. My iPhone went completely dead. Can't swith on any more. What can I do?

Hi, thank you very much for your reply. No my phone was never been jailbreak-ed. Never been dropped in water or in any wet surface. Dropped on the floor while texting yes, but it was just a one time incident, last year august i can clearly remember, but after that no more (phone still works fine even after.) restored the phone again earlier, but problem still occured. Will try to go to Apple also to ask and have it checked.  Just worried because my phone is already out of warranty. Will keep you posted. Again, thanks. If you have any more advice just let me know. It would mean a lot.
    Cheers,

  • Corrupted .f4v file? Can it be saved somehow? Can`t convert or play.

Video is recorded with Flash Media Live Encoder 3.2 and my laptop shut down while recording (dead battery). can it be saved somehow?
When i use Adobe F4V Post Processor i get this error: Recording Exception: -203 No space left in the stsd box.
When i try "any video convertor" i get the "cannot get media information of video file... insertion failed" error
    Can anything be done?

    yes but no result.
Do you know if Flash Media Live Encoder has a temp directory a backup or somthing simmilar? Maybe i can get the file from there because the recording was not stopped, my laptop just went into hibernate state. When i turned it back on (conected to AC) Flash Media Live Encoder was still in record mode and i pressed stop.
i`m not even sure if it is the right recordin or the complete recording. It would be amazing to not loose that moment...it was amazing so sad that it didn`t work
I whould preffer losing all recordings but for the last one (closing song at an outdor party by a river with the sun comming up)

  • I had Premier pro given me by the college I attend and do no use wi fi and do not use cloud. My laptop completely died and will be sent back to Apple for exchange. How can I reinstall Premier Pro on a new Apple computer since the old one is completly dead

I had Premier pro given me by the college I attend and do no use wi fi and do not use cloud. My laptop completely died and will be sent back to Apple for exchange. How can I reinstall Premier Pro on a new Apple computer since the old one is completly dead and could not be unregistered?

    Hi,
You have not specified which version of Premiere Pro was given to you. If you don't have the disc (which i suppose you don't have) you will have to download it online.
As far as your registration is concerned, for Premiere Pro CS6 or earlier you will have to reach Adobe chat support for further help: http://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html
For Premiere Pro CC and later, you will not have much problems reactivating it.
    Thanks,

  • I updated my 4s to ios7 and the phone is now completly dead. I tried to restore it with the new itunes but it won't restore. If you can't get the download be glad! Anyone have any ideas other than going out and buying a new Samsung phone?

I updated my 4s to ios7 and the phone is now completly dead. I tried to restore it with the new itunes but it won't restore. If you can't get the download be glad! Anyone have any ideas other than going out and buying a new Samsung phone? I don't really need a paper weight.

No not jailbroken. After the update which took about 45 minutes. The phone went black. Dead. Wouldn't restart. Using the new itunes I tried to restore it. It went through the motions; the white Apple and progress bar appeared on the iphone screen. Then I got a message "Itunes has detected an iphone in recovery mode. You must restore this iphone before it can be used with itunes." Then the phone went completly dead again. I Repeated the process and got the same results. Is there another way to restore the phone if it's dead, besides itunes?

    Hi,
Do you have iTunes Match? If so, you will still be able to access your music.
If you don't subscribe to match, no.

  • Received call that went to voicemail, phone alerted voicemail and then went completely dead, will not power up, what can i do?

my I phone 5 went completely dead after receiving an incoming call that went to voicemail and alerted, i cannot power back up, what can I do?

Try a reset. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. If you are sure the battery still had a charge, this should work. If you think the battery was low, then plug it in and let it charge for at least 20 minutes and then try the reset.

  • My iphone 4S is completely dead-can not turn it on and no indication on charging.  It is two weeks old!

I installed the latest software update and the next day the iphone is completely dead.  It does not turn on or off.  Connected to the charger, there is no indication of charging.  I have had this iphone for about two weeks.

Thanks for the advice.  I just went to try the hard restart and my phone came on (without the hard restart) showing 15% for battery life.  It was plugged in overnight (maybe a bad connection), but clearly something is very strange as it was fully charged as of about 4PM yesterday.  I have had an iphone for about three years (3GS) and never experienced this before.  It now seems to be charging but there is not the usual battery symbol on the screen.  I am guessing that I should somehow reload the software update (I have already done the update last Friday).  Any suggestions (or should I venture to the Apple Store just to have it checked out)?

  • IPod 40 gb click wheel completely dead!

I bought an iPod (40gb click wheel) in September 2004 for the grand sum of £299 – so it isn’t even 2 years old! It has totally died. Firstly in June it refused to be identified by my Dell computer; then it corrupted a part of the software in my computer which identifies my DVD/CD drive. I had that fixed by Dell – thank goodness it didn’t do any further damage! As a result of not being recognised by my computer I was unable to add additional tunes to it. The iPod was still working but then started to make lots of noises. It then stopped working altogether and produced the folder with!. I phoned the support line in early July and was told that there are several articles on the web site which could help – I followed the recommendations and it still continued to try to re-boot itself. I was also told that getting it fixed would cost me £166 as the one year warranty had run out !!!! (Surely it should last longer than that – also I can buy something new which is more reliable for less than that!) The last stage was the final appearance of the apple logo, a black screen and now it is completely dead. It refuses to charge up with the battery and I’m absolutely livid. It doesn’t warrant being fixed. I hearby plan to return this lump of rubbish to Apple as I was on the verge of throwing it away but didn’t want to pollute the environment with whatever nasties lie within.

I've got the same problem mate. The clickwheel started to ge dead in places like around skip forward track area, (which was annoying to say the least.) But the other day it completely died, now it tries to start up showing the apple logo, then you can hear inside the hardrive spin up then a loud click then it tries this again about 5 times before showing the support website.
Ive probably had the ipod for about 2 years.
Annyoing since its a 40gb ipod and i've barely filled up 13gb. I might take it into see what the shop says but i sort of know its gonna be not worth repairing. Plus the video ipods are looking really good.

  • Completely DEAD iPhone 3GS, Data Recovery ?HELP?

I have a iPhone 3GS 16GB, The other day it just went off? tried unplugging it from the mains and plugging it back in again, but nothing happened.
I tried to get it to go into DFU mode, Nothing!
Plugged it into my Desktop PC, Nothing showed in itunes?
I had it tested by a local phone shop and they said they did all the scans/checks and whatnot that they could and the iphone is a complete dud!:(
But i really need the data that is on there?
I have been told that if i take it to an apple store they can do a data retract for me?
What are my options for a complete dead iphone but needing the data on there?

Apple does not offer and will not perform any data recovery service.
A simple google search will reveal multiple data recovery services, if you really need such a service and are willing to pay an arm, a leg, and give up your first born child for that data.
If the device has been used as designed, it would have been backed up regularly to iTunes or iCloud.
Simply restore that backup to a new iOS device.
Contacts and calendars should be synced to a supported application on the computer or a cloud service.
Pictures taken with the device should be regularly copied off the device to a computer as would be done with any digital camera.

  • How do you know if the battery is completely dead?

I'm pretty sure that my iPod Shuffle's battery is completely dead. Even though I charged it longer than the alotted time there's no charge and the indicator light doesn't come on.
How can I replace the battery?

If the battery check light shows nothing, and the front status light is similarly dead, then you can assume no power. That could certainly mean a dead battery.
The battery is not a user-replaceable item. Apple's official solution is provided through the battery replacement program, which you can find discussed and described on the iPod Shuffle Support Page and elsewhere.
I think you'll find the price delta between that and simply buying a refurb isn't that great. Something else to keep in mind is that that's what you're doing anyway; you don't get your own machine back.
You can open the Shuffle up and try replacing it yourself, if you like. It will involve some fine work and some soldering, but some have claimed success. There are now sources for the batteries themselves. Guidance for all of that can be found online.

  • Lumia 720 completely dead

So, my quite new, undamaged Lumia 720 has gone completely dead.
I took some photos and soon after that shut it off for the night to conserve battery (which was at 47% at this point). The las photo doesn't show up at skydrive, so I shut the phone off when it was still syncing. Next morning I tried to start it up again, no response. Tried soft and hard reset combinations, nothing. Put it on charger for 6 hours, nothing. Tried soft and hard reset again without sim & sd, nothing.
There have been no reactions whatsoever, even when I tried to charge the phone up. No vibrations, no sounds, nothing on the screen.
Up until now it has worked quite well, apart from a few crashes that needed soft reset.
So, can I do anything to fix it, or do I have to take it back? I'm not really interested in using my old samsung again for weeks...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I got my new 720 in June 2013.  Absolutely love it but then in early November it died.  Had to send it off to NSW (No Nokia repair in Perth, WA).  Allphones were good at organising the repair logistics
Phone was fixed and sent back after 2 weeks.  Issue was something to do with camera flex.  Then it broke again early December, unable to turn on, I tried soft and hard resets still no go.  Now it s off again for 2nd warranty repair.
I asked for replacement as I need to travel overseas for Xmas, but not joy.  So my phone will be repaired again and will be there wating for me when I return from holidays.  Very painful, experience.
