Is my HDD slow?

I have the low end 13" MBP (2.26 ghz) with 2gb ram and the stock Hitachi HTS545016B9SA02 HDD
With EFI 1.6 I got 25 mb/s read & write
After EFI 1.7 I get 32 mb/s read and 32 mb/s write with AJA.
Is this "normal" for this config? Or is it slow? I saw some peoiple posting figures of 50 or 60 mb/s

Hi !
With AJA, since SL, my MBP varies between those values :
Write : 50-70
Read : 70-76

  • Secondary HDD slow and freeze

    Hello,
I have a 27inch Imac from Mid 2011 that is using a SSD as a primarly drive (for the OS) and the original HDD as the secondary drive (Itunes, Imovies, files, etc).
Suddenly, it started working really slow for a few days and it has been harder and harder to use it, files take ages to open, Itunes doens't open anymore and when I'm trying to run disktools it doesn't load anymore (even though the HDD still appear on my desktop.
When I'm trying to use Disk utilities, it tells me that "Live File System Repair" is not supported.
    Anyone has a clue ?
    Thank you in advance.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic  test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything suggested in this comment. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as some other aspects of the configuration that may be related to the problem.
Don’t be alarmed by the seeming complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out. Here's a brief summary: In each of two steps, you copy a line of text from this web page into a window in another application. You wait about a minute. Then you paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is copy; paste; paste again. That's all there is to it. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken while booted in “normal” mode. If the system is now running in safe mode and is bootable in normal mode, reboot as usual. If it only boots in safe mode, use that.
Below are instructions to enter UNIX shell commands. They do nothing but produce human-readable output. However, you need to think carefully before running any program at the behest of a stranger on a public message board. If you question the safety of the procedure suggested here — which you should — search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
The commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. Step 1 should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PB=/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy; PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && o=$(sed 's/^/   /' <<< "$o") && printf '\n%s:\n\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; PC () { o=$(grep [^[:blank:]] "$2"); PR "$1"; }; PF () { o=$($PB -c Print "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'); PR "$1"; }; PN () { [[ $o -eq 0 ]] || printf "\n%s: %s\n" "$1" $o; }; { system_profiler SPSoftwareDataType | sed '8!d;s/^ *//'; o=$(system_profiler SPDiagnosticsDataType | sed '5,6!d'); fgrep -q P <<< "$o" && o=; PR "POST"; o=$(($(vm_stat | awk '/Pageo/{sub("\\.",""); print $2}')/256)); o=$((o>=1024?o:0));  PN "Pageouts (MiB)"; s=( $(sar -u 1 10 | sed '$!d') ); [[ ${s[4]} -lt 90 ]] && o=$( printf 'User %s%%\t\tSystem %s%%' ${s[1]} ${s[3]} ) || o=; PR "Total CPU usage"; [[ "$o" ]] && o=$(ps acrx -o comm,ruid,%cpu | sed '2!d'); PR "Max %CPU by process (name, UID, %)"; o=$(kextstat -kl | grep -v com\\.apple | cut -c53- | cut -d\< -f1); PR "Loaded extrinsic kernel extensions"; o=$(launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)|\.[0-9]+$/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic user agents"; o=$(launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES); PR "Inserted libraries"; PC "cron configuration" /e*/cron*; o=$(crontab -l | grep [^[:blank:]]); PR "User cron tasks"; PC "Global launchd configuration" /e*/lau*; PC "Per-user launchd configuration" ~/.lau*; PF "Global login items" /L*/P*/loginw* Path; PF "Per-user login items" L*/P*/*loginit* Name; PF "Safari extensions" L*/Saf*/*/E*.plist Bundle | sed 's/\..*$//;s/-[1-9]$//'; o=$(find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) | wc -l); PN "Restricted user files"; cd; o=$(find -L /S*/L*/E* {,/}L*/{A*d,Compon,Ex,In,Keyb,Mail/Bu,P*P,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo}* -type d -name Contents -prune | while read d; do ID=$($PB -c 'Print :CFBundleIdentifier' "$d/Info.plist") || ID=; ID=${ID:-No bundle ID}; egrep -qv "^com\.apple\.[^x]|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|HDPro|HighPoint|driver\.stex|hp-fax|JMicron|microsoft\.MDI|print|SoftRAID" <<< $ID && printf '%s\n\t(%s)\n' "${d%/Contents}" "$ID"; done); PR "Extrinsic loadable bundles"; o=$(find /u*/{,*/}lib -type f -exec sh -c 'file -b "$1" | grep -qw shared && ! codesign -v "$1"' {} {} \; -print); PR "Unsigned shared libraries"; o=$(system_profiler SPFontsDataType | egrep "Valid: N|Duplicate: Y" | wc -l); PN "Font problems"; for d in {,/}L*/{La,Priv,Sta}*; do o=$(ls -A "$d"); PR "$d"; done; } 2> /dev/null | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 1 done'
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. Wait for the line "Step 1 done" to appear below what you entered. The output of the command will beautomatically copied to the Clipboard. All you have to do is paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-Vagain. Please don't copy anything from the Terminal window. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
Remember that you must be logged in as an administrator for this step. Do as in Step 1 with this line:
    PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && o=$(sed 's/^/   /' <<< "$o") && printf '\n%s:\n\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; { o=$(sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|calendarse|cups|dove|isc|ntp|post[fg]|x)/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic daemons"; o=$(sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook); PR "Login hook"; o=$(sudo crontab -l | grep [^[:blank:]]); PR "Root cron tasks"; o=$(syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail -n25 | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'); PR "Log check"; } 2>&- | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 2 done'
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    You can then quit Terminal.
In case of difficulty, please note:
☞ Steps 1 and 2 are all copy-and-paste — type only your login password when prompted.
☞ When you type your password, you won't see what you're typing.
☞ If you don’t have a password, set one before taking Step 2. If that’s not possible, skip the step.
☞ Step 2 might not produce any output, in which case the Clipboard will be empty. Step 1 will always produce something.
☞ The commands don't change anything, and merely running them will do neither good nor harm.
☞ Remember to post the output of both steps (unless you had to skip Step 2.) It's already in the Clipboard after you complete each step. You don't have to copy it. Just paste into a reply
☞ If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output of either command, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
☞ Don't post what you see in the Terminal window. The output is copied automatically to the Clipboard.
☞ Wait for the commands to finish before posting the output.
☞ Don't paste the output of Step 1 into the Terminal window. Paste it into a reply.

  • 7200RPM HDD slower than 5400RPM

I just bought a 13" Macbook Pro and I simply took my old HDD from my white macbook and put it in the new MBP and booted. Everything has been working fine except I've noticed its a little slow. I'm not sure if there is something or anything I can do aside from reloading the OS. Here are the xbench results. The 7200RPM should be faster but it definitely is not both in real world experience and according to this bench. My guess is it has something to do with the move from one macbook to another without reloading OSX.

If you cloned like that and got all of your hardware working you're pretty lucky I would say. To give you an example - take an install drive from say my old Macbook (2007 Whitebook) and pop it into my MBP with the dual graphics cards... It boots, it works.....But can I switch graphics cards? No chance.
It's stuff like that that's your issue here.
Until you have a known good install it's impossible to fault find such things like as being asked. In my opinion anyways. If you have weird stuff going on that you can't bottom often it's a case of making sure stuff is right. Dropping one drive from one platform into another is not one of those right things.
In defence of all things Apple though - just try that on a Windows laptop and see how far it gets you

  • HDD Slowing down SSD

I own a MBP 15" early 2010, I added an SSD a few months ago, and got rid of the SuperDrive (which now is in an external USB enclosure). So now the MBP has the original 500GB HDD + the 128GB SSD, the SSD is installed where the SuperDrive was.
When I made that change, I was using Snow Leopard, and it ran really fast but since I upgraded to Lion it takes longer to load and to open apps and I noticed that when loading or opening apps the old HDD works a lot, I can hear it, this didn't happen before Lion, so I don't know why the HDD is "participating" on the booting process and slowing down the system.
Is worth to mention that in the SSD I have only the OS and in the HDD I have only my Home folder.
    Any help/tip will be appreciated.

    richardpsic wrote:

Well this could be the problem.
I tinkered with Lion when I had it running on my other machine and noticed in the (now) hidden Users/Library/Preferences folder there now a lot more additions there than the normal .plist (preference files) than before.
I don't quite know what to make of it, perhaps it makes it easier to transfer a user to another machine perhaps?
Allowing users to have programs only in their particular users instead of globally?
Anyway, if you move your Home folder back to the SSD, but without the files (put them in new folders like Documents 2, Pictures 2 and so forth) and have iTunes and iPhoto link to their libraries on the other drive, you should see less of that behavior.
Apple doesn't expect one to move their home folder to another drive or partition, so any performance tweaks done need to return to what Apple expects before you upgrade.
Same thing with system level tweaks, you have to disable them before running Software update or upgrading.

Use the free Tinker Tool to turn on your invisible files, also make sure to backup your files before tinkering around.

  • Airport Extreme external hdd slow after update 7.6.1

    Hi, need help!
Since I updated the Airport Extreme firmware to 7.6.1 the access to my external disk is extremelly slow. Sometimes I can only access it by IP address, it not even appears in the Finder.
In the same day I updated to Airport Utility to 6.0, again, another error. Now I can't see the Airport, only by IP.
Installed the older version of Airport Utility, the 5.6, but nothing changed, it only appears by a few hours if I reset the Airport.
I'm getting crazy, there's no logic in this error.
If I use the Airport Utility from the iPad, everything is fine. In fact, I have to use the iPad if I want to perform a restart or reset the Airport.
If I use the Finder after a reset I can see the disk, but its very slow. If I access the disk by IP its works ok.
The Time Machine uses the external disk from the Airport, the last time took 3 hours to copy 500Mb.
Downgraded the firmware to 7.6, but it stays the same.
Help, don't know what more to do.

I spent several weeks trying to diagnose and repair this problem.  Unfortunately the only fix I have found is to revert my firmware version all the way back to 7.4.2.  I'm not the only one who has had to do this.  If you search the net you will find that this is the standard solution.
As near as I can tell, Apple has abandoned any attempts to fix the major problems the airport extreme has with sharing USB devices.  They sell it as a big feature of the router but it has been very disappointing.  I will soon be purchasing a new non-Apple router because the airport extreme is no longer the only unit with dual antenna and device sharing features.

  • SATA2 HDD slow based on these hdparm -Tt /dev/sda numbers [SOLVED]

I have a EG45M-UD2H running BIOS F3 (latest one as of the time of this post).  I'm noticing a pretty significant HDD speed decrease with this board vs. my old board.  If I take the same Seagate 7200.12 (1 gig) HDD and benchmark it on another motherboard, the cached reads are about 7x higher.
    For example, under the EG45M-UD2H:
    # hdparm -Tt /dev/sda
    /dev/sda:
    Timing cached reads: 2692 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1346.47 MB/sec
    Timing buffered disk reads: 386 MB in 3.01 seconds = 128.13 MB/sec
On another motherboard (DFI LP P35-T2R):
    # hdparm -Tt /dev/sda
    /dev/sda:
    Timing cached reads: 14740 MB in 2.00 seconds = 7378.19 MB/sec
    Timing buffered disk reads: 368 MB in 3.02 seconds = 122.04 MB/sec
The only relevant settings I see in the BIOS are:
BIOS settings: Integrated Peripherals>SATA RAID/AHCI Mode [AHCI]  <-- I have also set this to disable and there is no difference
SATA Port0-3 Native Mode [Enabled or Disabled] <-- I tried both and there is no difference
    Does anyone have any thoughts?
    $ lsmod | grep ahci
    ahci 34321 4
    libata 151860 4 pata_acpi,ata_generic,ahci,pata_jmicron

    Timing cached reads: 2308 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1153.72 MB/sec

the 7000mbs cache read, way to high for a sata 3gb interface, so i think the first reading is a mistake.
i dont know of any other hdd test utils apart from dding to /dev/null.  but some one will probably mention one soon
Thanks for the info, markp.  Can you post the output from your P45 board once you have that system powered up?  To answer your question, there's bonnie++ but it takes quiet a long time to run.
EDIT: This whole issue is a non-issue -- PEBKAC.  Seems as though I was misusing the -T switch:
    hdparm manpage wrote:
    -T
Perform  timings  of  cache reads for benchmark and comparison purposes.  This displays the speed of reading directly from the Linux buffer  cache  without  disk  access. This measurement is essentially an indication of the throughput of the processor, cache, and memory of the system under test.

  • Quicktime 10 (or HDD) slow after TM restore, HDD fragmentation?

    Hi there,
have a rather weird problem with Quicktime 10. I am producing timelapse videos on a QuadCore iMac and it always has been fast and smooth (and some files - prior to further postprocessing - can be rather big > 2-4 GB).
recently I had to restore the machine from a TM backup.
now, if I - since that restore - watch the bigger timelapse videos (mark file in finder and hit space key) they are not displayed smooth, but "hang" in between, or jump frames for seconds.
the harddisk (450 GB remaining free) seems to start heavily working (can see it in the system monitor).
as I was curious I just copied some of the same GB vids to my dualcore macbook pro, and there they can be displayd smoothly.
may it be that some disk fragmentation has happened via restore? I thought that OSX has no fragmentation?
    any ideas?
    thx
    chris

I have to add that it is also happening in QT 7 that Videos are choppy and I does not change when I put a video on a firewire or external disk. Again, this was not the case before the TimeMachine restore.

  • Win XP on Satellite A300 - SATA HDD slow - eats CPU

    Hello,
I just got a brand new A300-1lA for my job.
Since we have to install XP rather than Vista, I formatted the beast.
After a long afternoon tracking down every driver, it seems I still have problems.
When I initiate a file transfer between the two disks or from the LAN, the cpu load rises to abnormal levels (50% - 70%).
I suspect there's a problem with the disks controller
Now, for the install to work, I had to go into the BIOS and set the SATA controller to "Compatibility".
    Could this be the source?
    Thanks in advance
OH and BTW : I tried to install the drive manager from the Toshiba Website, but it says my computer doesn't have the required configuration

Just wanting to say that I accidentally deleted a part of my last post.
The answer I found was to reinstall XP, but this time with a custom nlite-ed disk including the Intel drivers.
With that, I could set the SATA controller as "AHCI" rather than "Compatibility" , and XP had no problem. The drive now works perfectly.
So, it seems I had problem with the IDE emulation

  • Will creating two boot partitions slow down a HDD?

    Hello,
I'd like to have 10.8 and 10.10 on my Mac Mini 2012 for two reasons:
    - I have stuff that only runs under 10.8
    - I find 10.10 slower (or don't you agree?) in normal use, even the Finder, opening folders and apps etc.
I don't need 10.10, but I would like to have it there, to play around with it and explore it some more over the years to come. But I only need 10.8
Will making two partitions on one Hard Drive make the HDD slower? If so, I would either omit 10.10 or use an external for 10.10.
    Thanks.

    @ BobHarris:
Would you expect that the RAM can mess up several Headers on the Volume, so that Disk Utility even says, it can't repair it, I need to format the drive?
    rccharles wrote:
Where did you get the mac mini?  I am curious because the latest mac mini doesn't allow memory upgrade.  I'm considering buying a mini and would prefer the older model where I could upgrade memory.
    Robert
I am in Germany and bought it at a big chain of electronic store's here. But it was and is still available everywhere in Europe from internet stores as well. I have the i5 2012 model (the i7 models of 2012 were just sold out, they are clearing the shelves. Then two exemplars reappeared in Germany, but at a ridiculous price of 900-1000,-EUR, while the Initial price was something around 829,- (it even dropped to 650,- after one year, very crazy. And I am speaking of the i7).
If you are in Europe (for work or so):
2012 i5 http://skinflint.co.uk/eu/apple-mac-mini-md387d-a-late-2012-a856420.html?t=alle& plz=&va=b&vl=de&hloc=at&hloc=de&hloc=pl&… (prices in pounds, for EUR, go to their partner price comparison pages). You also have to change the shipping destination.
If you scroll down here, soue will find the i7-models of 2012 as well http://skinflint.co.uk/eu/?fs=mac+mini+2012&in=
If there is no such comparison site in the US, then you could try to find one shop, that you can talk into importing it the US. With older Macs (PPCs) I remember there was a small button to change the AC-power form EU to US, I don't know, if the Mini maybe adjusts automatically, or if they produce a central european and british version (British power adapters/sockets have another shape then in the rest of the EU, so they would at least include another power cable).
For a private person, the shipping costs from Germany to the US would be about 35,-EUR (x1.06 = USD), so I guess an online store would not have much higher shipping costs. Problem will be the customs duty taxes, I guess?

    Any tips ?

*OS X* has support for DTrace. There are a few shell scripts available such as iofileb and iotop, and for a GUI application, there is Instruments if you have the *Developer Tools* installed.

  • TC slow wired file copy

    Hello,
I am trying to copy files to my TC connected with ethernet. It takes about 15 minutes to copy a 500meg file. The transfer rate will speedup and slow down dramatically during the copy. Has anyone seen this behavior? The TC is almost useless as an network storage device with this slow transfer speed. Thanks

I am having a similar problem here with the new dual-band TC on 7.4.1. My speeds are way below what I expected. I heard that the new firmware causes slowdowns, but I wasn't able to find TC 7.4 anywhere to roll back to. For me, the speeds of file copying vary between 1-4MBs on wireless and 6-8 on ethernet. And if I copy from TC to an HFS+ formatted USB Disc directly connected to it, the speeds are between 1-2 also, sometimes even slower (and I thought I'd get full USB speeds this way!). This seems terribly slow. Sometimes the HDD in TC shuts down when I am copying between it and the USB disc connected right to it (you can hear the sound of the HDD slowing down and stopping) - and I have to wake it by opening a file already on it for the copying to continue.
I will try to backup all my files on TC somewhere else and erase it from AirPort Utility, as there was an advice somewhere that formatting the disc might help. I sure hope that my device is not broken, as I'd truly hate to have to make warranty rounds...

Sorry, stuck with what you have in the near term.  There
is rumor of folks working on video upgrades via the
Thunderbolt port but that is sometime off.

I am pretty sure you can do overclocking when booted
into windows, but also need to get additional fan control
software and you will evetually be temperature limited.
The new Sandy Bridge processors supposedly have
a failsafe to turn things down if temps exceeded for
to long, but best to keep an eye on things.
On the Mac side, there is no means to overclock
    the CPU.
BTW, the CPU you have you are stuck with as it is soldered to
    the motherboard.

My Aperture/Photoshop workflow paged out on my MBP even with 8 GB RAM. Personally I recommend simply upgrading to 16 GB RAM immediately. The limited RAM may or may not be the direct cause of your SBBOD but it is very likey that your MBP is paging out, and paging out is very slow which often does cause problematic operation.
If you want to evaluate whether or not you currently have adequate RAM on board:
Look at the Page Outs number under System Memory on the Activity Monitor app before starting a typical Aperture work session and write the number down. Recheck the Page Outs count after working and write the number down again. If the page outs change (manual calculation of ending page outs number minus starting page outs number) is not zero your workflow is RAM-starved.
Ignore the pie charts and other info in Activity Monitor because they are often misleading regarding RAM usage. For RAM analysis, manually count page outs.
If your test showed that page outs increased during operation you can
    • add RAM, very strongly recommended
    • and/or simply try to run Aperture by itself after restarting, a workaround
    • Restart before Aperture work sessions to clear possible memory leaks
Personally IMO maxxing out RAM to 16 GB from OWC or Crucial is a no-brainer at today's prices. More and more, app and OS designers are (rightfully) designing to take advantage of lots of RAM.
At 60% full your HDD is not overfilled but HDDs slow as they fill so IMO you should replace it with a larger drive SSD/HDD when it gets ~70% full. Also you may want to consider moving to a Referenced-Masters workflow with the Masters on external drives to keep your internal drive from overfilling.

  • Does length of film cause jerky playback

I have been editing a travel film .All was fine when it was 15 minutes long even with a soundtrack and narration. Now it is up to 40 minutes long chunks of the tracks get missed out intermittently and the media pending screen show upon the monitor panel.I have a dual core cpu with 4 mb memory. Are these problems caused by the length of the film.?

    Thanks for the info.
    You state:
      c drive ST350830  internal  1021  fairly full
I would clean off some files (maybe locating them on the USB external), so that you have at least 40 - 60GB of free-space. Note: at about 70% of capacity, an HDD slows down, and the closer that you get to 100% capacity, the slower it goes. At 100%, there is a good chance of catastrophic failure. Also, as you likely have your Page File dynamically managed (the default for Windows), and located on your C:\, when editing video, it can swell too. Last, as one writes closer to the hubs of the platters, the slower the read/writes will be.
A few more comments and a question: who is the mfgr. of that HDD, and what is its speed. For Video, one really, really wants 7200RPM, or higher. Also, the limit on the WD external will be the USB connection. I have found those to be far too slow to edit to/from, and at least the older ones were prone to read/write errors, including the dreaded Delayed Write Failure, which can cripple a USB external. That happened most often with a fast computer, when its writing would exceed the speed of the connection.
    Good luck,

  • Some specific Disk Setup Questions

Alright, I've read several articles, but I'm still slightly confused.  It's not too much, but just a simple matter of what difference an HDD and an SDD would make without any form of RAID.
    So, let's take the following:
C: Samsung 256GB 850 PRO Series SATA III 6Gb/s Solid State Drive
    for OS and Programs
D: 3TB Barracuda SATA 6Gb/s 7200RPM 64MB Cache Desktop Drive  OR   Samsung 1TB 850 PRO Series SATA III 6Gb/s Solid State Drive
    for Source Media and Projects
E: Samsung 128GB 850 PRO Series SATA III 6Gb/s Solid State Drive
    for Pagefile and Media Cache
F: Samsung 128GB 850 PRO Series SATA III 6Gb/s Solid State Drive  OR   Samsung 256GB 850 PRO Series SATA III 6Gb/s Solid State Drive
    for Preview and Exports.*
So, this is what I may be considering as a disk setup.  I don't have too much more money to spend than possibly what I have listed above, and I'm trying to determine what would be the best for After Effects and Premiere Pro, the two programs I'd main.
*One thing to note is that I would NOT keep the exports on that disk.  I would move them over to something else I already have for storage.  So, it's basically a matter of how much space should I have on that drive for preview files.
    So, here're my questions:
For the D: drive, what difference will the HDD I have listed make (remember, Ae and Pr would be READING from that drive) compared to the SDD?  See, I would prefer more space with the HDD, and like to spend less money, but if the other drives are all SSDs, will that HDD slow it all down?
How big are preview files supposed to be?  I've had bad experiences with them, due to my lack of knowledge at the moment, but I don't know; just for 1080x1920 HD video, what's a general size the preview files should be per minute?  (I also use several layers, so that could affect the size as well.)
If the preview files are generally fairly small when set up correctly (as in not a 40GB file per 3 minutes of 1080by1920 HD), could the E: and F: drives be run together in a RAID0?  Would that offer advantages over running them separately?  Or would the difference be negligible?
If it's better to run the E: and F: drives separately, should I use the 128GB drive for Previews/Exports or the 256GB drive?  I know that if I did RAID0 I'd have to use the 128GB.

Yes, it's true; I have no experience building systems at all.  However, I'm still unclear, entirely, on the whole HDD vs SSD thing.  Thank you for your information, but I'd still like to clarify some things.
I'm mainly trying to understand more about the performance aspect of all this.
Let's take the previously revised version and compare it to your suggested one.  I'll say what I think based upon what I believe to be correct, but I'm obviously missing some information here; that's where I want somebody to correct me.
    Version 1:
C: Samsung 256GB 850 PRO Series SATA III 6Gb/s Solid State Drive
for OS and Programs and possibly Pagefile
D: Samsung 1TB 850 PRO Series SATA III 6Gb/s Solid State Drive
    for Source Media and Projects
E: Samsung 128GB 850 PRO Series SATA III 6Gb/s Solid State Drive
for possibly Pagefile and Media Cache
F: Samsung 256GB 850 PRO Series SATA III 6Gb/s Solid State Drive
    for Preview and Exports.*
*Take note, I'm putting the exports on a separate drive I already own and deleting them from the drive I originally wrote them to.
    VS:
    Version 2:
C: Samsung 256GB 850 PRO Series SATA III 6Gb/s Solid State Drive
for OS and Programs and pagefile.
D: HD RAID 0 array: 6x 1TB Barracuda 64MB cache RAID 0 array (x99 boards have LOTS of SATA ports)
So, let me get this straight here.  Correct me if any of the following statements are wrong.  I'll also have some questions associated with them.
Version 2 will be SIGNIFICANTLY slower than Version 1.  I'm assuming this because Version 2 is both an HDD and SATA instead of SSDs with SATA III.  However, I'm unsure of this since RAID 0 is being used in Version 2, unlike Version 1.
Version 2 will be MUCH riskier than Version 1.  I'm assuming this because it's RAID 0, and if one of those six drives fails, all the data is lost.  (However, since the programs are on C:, they will stay safe, along with the operating system.)
Version 2 is ALSO riskier due to the fact that I'm using HDDs instead of SSDs.  Or am I wrong, are SSDs riskier than HDDs?
Under Version 2, I'll have 1TB total to put source media, projects media cache, preview files, and exports on, while keeping the pagefile, OS, and programs on C:. (even though it's six disks)
This is what I'm understanding right now.  Please correct me if I'm wrong, or point out other suggestions.  One final thing, as well, that I'm also unsure of.
Now, I used to use Premiere Elements 11.  When I would create preview files for, say, a 13 minute HD video, the preview files (in total) would be under 1GB or just a little more.  What about Premiere Pro CC makes the file sizes so different?
