Is it possible to upgrade it somehow?

If I install the correct card and am able to connect to an airport base station which is connected to an ethernet cable which supplies it with a broadband connection...this will work won't it?
Yes, as long as the network is set for 802.11g and/or 802.11b. If it is set only for 802.11n, it won't work, since the iBook can't do 802.11n on its own. Airport base stations of different ages had the ability to establish wireless networks on three different bands. Those that support all three can be setup to have 2 or 3 simulcasted bands (802.11n, 802.11g, and 802.11b are the three bands), but some choose only to use the fastest band because it is better optimized for Time Capsule and AppleTV, and having slower items on their network added will slow down the connection.
I have a dial-up connection so anything is better than that.
Not all Airport Base Stations support dialup connections. Airport base stations and cards will not improve the speed of your internet connection where you have a dialup connection, unless a neighbor of yours has an open WiFi network that you can latch onto, or you go and visit a WiFi hotspot. You'll want to upgrade your internet connection at home to broadband if you want the most secure connection available by wireless.
Also, should I upgrade the computer to Leopard before I install the card?
There is no need to. Also upgrading to Leopard is not possible on an iBook G4 800 Mhz. The maximum it will take is 10.4.11. It is possible on a G5. Leopard offers some features which the G5 you have in your profile in one of your posts may want to take advantage of, but only if all your software has been upgraded for Leopard compatibility. Also your G5 may have an airport extreme card added if it isn't already present.
Leopard though makes no difference as far as wireless compatibility for your Macs.

  • How do I get content from my old iPod Touch to my new iPhone 5?  My iPod Touch is too old to use iCloud

How do I get content from my old iPod Touch to my new iPhone 5?  My iPod Touch is too old to use iCloud. I have activated the phone but am stick at the point of the set-up where my 3 choices are:
    1. Set up as new phone
    2.  Restore from icloud Backup
    3.  Restore from iTunes Backup
    thanks!

If your iPod touch music is in your iTunes library, you just need to sync the new iPod nano with iTunes, the songs will be transfer to your new iPod. If not, you can follow this guide to transfer the songs from iPod touch to iTunes first, and then re-sync them to your new iPod. Hope it helps. Feel free to email me if you need further help.

  • I recently upgraded my internet service with Comcast for faster internet.  When I user ethernet connection I get 50 MB download speed....when I use the wireless connection I get 10-20 MB speed.  I have an airport extreme...3-4 years old.  Why?

I recently upgraded my internet service with Comcast for faster internet.  When I use an ethernet connection I get 50 MB download speed....when I use the wireless connection I get 10-20 MB speed.  I have an airport extreme...3-4 years old.  Why is the speed so different and are there settings I can change to increase the wireless speed?

If your supposed to be getting 20 Mb/s down via your ISP and both Mac's are not getting that on the SpeedTest, then obviously your router appears to be the cause.
Connect one Mac directly to the ISP's modem, power off/wait 30 seconds/then power on, then power on the Mac. The ISP will connect directly to the Mac, then run a SpeedTest.
Then repeat the same for the other Mac. If both Mac's have a problem then it's possibly the ISP, the modem, your lines to them or on your property, or both Mac's are messed up.
You'll have to keep searching for the cause. Call your ISP and ask then to run a test to see if your getting your 20 Mb/s to your modem, that should clear part of the problem.

  • Is possible for me to use the wireless connection from my Macbook Pro

Hi All, I just got my iPad 16GB WIFI and I would like to know if it is possible for me to use the wireless connection from my Macbook Pro. Basically I will be travelling quite a bit and my Macbook Pro has a Wireless 3G dongle. Is it possble to use this via the 'internet share' option so that the iPad can connect to the 3G wireless via the Macbook Pro?

Yes. Just use internet sharing on your MacBook Pro.

  • Can't use a wireless connection.

I have just installed windows 10 technical preview build 10041 and I am unable to use a wireless connection to use the internet or for downloading updates. Every time I open Internet explorer or try to download updates my BThub 4 disconnects and wont reconnect.
I have had this problem with build 9926 and have had to use a wired connection, which also will sometimes disconnect as well. I also had this problem with earlier builds. Although with earlier builds the problem was fixed after downloading the updates for
those builds. Am I the only one with this problem, as I haven't been able to find any mention of this anywhere.
    cookiecat310.

10061 is the current build for the fast ring, it has corrected several problems with mobile networking
for example my netbook has a qualcomm gobi 2000 and it was not recognized until 10061 when windows immediately wanted to go online via cellular after the wifi was down
expect to see issues, after all this is a preview
use the feedback tool to report issues

  • Are there phones too old to use on Verizon?

Had a friend that tried to activate a samsung a950. The bought it from someone and call to check and see if the esn was clear. The rep
told her yes. When they called later to actually activate it, she was told that the phone was too old to activate on verizon. Does this sound right?

    budone wrote:
My understanding is they are exempt as long as they were active. Once shut down they could not be activated again.
That's correct. If it is already activated you are free and clear, but if it isn't activated you can't activate it.
The OP has an 2005 flip phone for Verizon, but the rep can't activate it because it's "too old". I think that's what the rep thinks, but it may be because of the data plan on the smart phone and doesn't know how to remove it(She may be new to her job).  I would assume some devices are infact old to activate.  I don't expect my Nokia 5160 to be activated at this point, but that phone is like 20 years old lol.

  • IBook won't boot after broken wireless connection trying to update OS

Trying to help my kid with his iBook via telephone calls. He was updating the OS over a wireless connection, lost the signal which apparently froze the machine. When he rebooted it wouldn't go past the blue start-up screen with a spinning gear. He's used the install disk and disk repair, which said it repaired one volume but not a second one (not sure what that means). But no luck with rebooting back into his machine. He then tried to boot up in "safe mode" but that doesn't work; gets the blue screen and spinning gear again. He's got a lot of stuff on his hard drive and is understandably concerned about the best way to get the machine back to normal and still have the contents of the hard drive. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help.

Really needs to fix that HD, if DU can't do it, try, If DiskWarrior can't fix it, you might try Data Rescue II...

  • My ibook doesn't detect an existing wireless connection...please help

    Hello,
just moved into a new house with wireless connection. all the other computers (PCs) can easily detect the wireless signal but my iBook doesn't. The airport is working properly since I can detect wireless connection in the university, cafes, trains etc...
the wireless router is a belkin.
Do you know if some special settings are required to be detect it or if there are some settings that can exclude my airport from the network?
please help me.... that's so frustrating!!!
    federica

The Belkin router might have been set up to use MAC-address filtering. In that case, make sure to add the MAC-address of your Airport to the list of addresses allowed to access the router.
Also, if the wireless connection name (SSID) is hidden (= closed network) your iBook might not see the network untill you explicitly define the network as a new Airport network connection.

  • Laptop won't reconnect to home wireless FiOS connection after using Verizon Wireless connection

I have a laptop that I've had connected to my home FiOS Internet connection without problems in the past. Now, when I leave the house and use my Verizon wireless stick to connect to the Internet and then return home the laptop no longer connects to the home wireless network. Any ideas? I've already:
    Rebooted the laptop
    Rebooted the router
Viewed the settings for the laptop connection on the router info page
    Thanks.

    Hello,
If your internet connection at home is working fine using a wired connection (using an ethernet cable) to the router and you're only having trouble connecting wirelessly, then I would recheck the network settings on your laptop:
    http://www22.verizon.com/support/residential/internet/fiosinternet/networking/setup/addwireless/1265...
The important part of this process is ensuring that you're selecting the right network name (SSID) for your home residential wifi network and entering the corresponding encryption key.

  • I can't seem to use the wireless connection to connect from my macpro to hp officejet 4500 g510g-m

Hi, I don't know how to connect my hp officejet 4500 g510g-m to my mac book pro. can anyone help me? i can't seem to find the ip address for the printer. this can be connected wireless right? it wasn't connected to the modem. it is okay?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
The Officejet 4500 support ethernet connection only, using wired network connection.
Only the 4500 Wireless model provide wireless connectivity.
Please make sure to connect the printer to your router, then it should become available from the Mac.
For any further issue, please clarify what router you are using.

  • IPad 4th Gen purchased - is my Macbook 3.1 too old to use?

I have bought the new iPad 4th Gen with retina display last week.... when plugged into my computer, iTunes on my Mac Book (3.1) will not pick it up, saying I need iTunes 10.7 or later. BUT to upgrade my iTunes, I need OS X 10.6.8 or later - my Mac only has OS X 10.5.8 and wont download anything newer.
I'm stuffed right?? Do i need a new computer? Or is there something I can possibly do to upgrage my OS X, so I can download a newer iTunes to use my iPad?? ARGHHH! I have tried upgrading to older new versions of Mac OS X but everything says my computer is not compatible.
I thought I was somewhat computer savvy, WRONG.

Arghh thanks. I bought the iPad to save some coin by not having to buy a new Mac Book as its super old, but looks like ill have to buy a new Mac too! My iPhone 3 and 4 both worked with this Mac though but definitely no chance of the iPad working....  Thought that would be the case.

  • How do I get my iTunes (both purchased and cd's) into the cloud as I cannot use match my iMac and MacBook are too old to use the right OS and maxed out RAM memory upgrades, but have iPhone 4S and now 64gb iPad and libraries on desktops plus iPod!!

So very excited bought iPad and new speakers today! Want to get all my music sorted as across iMac (G5), MacBook os 10.6 (maxed out ram and memory) and old iPod. Saw Match would be an option but can't use due to old OS so I can get the raw music library files but then what do I do to get all in one place? Any help appreciated.

A good route would be to attach a USB drive to the macbook.  You can use the drive to assemble a copy of all of your music from your various devices.  iTunes on the macbook can be used to create a new library, located on the USB drive, into which you can import all of your music.
    Two major benefits:
    1.  From here you can run iTunes Match across your entire music collection; and
    2.  You will have created a full local backup of all of your music on the USB drive.
Once complete you will be able to access the music from any iDevice capable of running iTunes Match,  Do remember as you add music it is important to maintain a local backup in order to keep your music safe.

  • I used to have a mobile me account to use when I travel.  I have an older power mac G5.  How can I get into my email when I am out of the country.  My computer is too old to use I cloud.  I have updated it as far as I can with operating systems.

I have a Power Mac 5 WITHOUT an intel processer/  I have updated my computer to snow lepord which is as far as I can go.  I am unable to use the cloud.  I used to have a Mobileme account and used it when I traveled to foreign countries yo read email.  I do not know how to acess my email when traveling now.  My email address is through mac.com.  Please advise as there must be a way.  We are traveling to South America soon for about a month and I need to know how to access my email from afar.
    Thanks!

    Hi Margaret,
I have a Power Mac 5 WITHOUT an intel processer/  I have updated my computer to snow lepord which is as far as I can go.
I think you updated to Leopard/10.5.x, Snow Leopard/10.6 is Intel only.
Actually you're in luck, you can still use iCloud for eMail on PPC using 10.4.11 or 10.5.8, but it must be IMAP, not POP...
    iCloud Mail setup...
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
    Server name: imap.mail.me.com
    SSL Required: Yes
    Port: 993
Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
    Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
    Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
    SSL Required: Yes
    Port: 587
    SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
    Password: Your iCloud password
One secret I think is when setting it up don't choose the .me/.mac type, it'll auto fill in .mac as the server which won't work, go back afterwards & change the servers.

  • My macbook is too old to use new iTunes with my iPhone, is there a way around this?

I'm not sure which operating system it is but I bought it in September 2006 if that helps...
Do I really need to buy a new computer in order to sync my iPhone?!

    Hi There
To check the version of Mac OS X you're running click on the Apple menu in the top left corner of the screen and select About This Mac. The iPhone 4 requires a computer running Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later with iTunes Version 10.1 or later (http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html).
You do not need to purchase a new computer just a new OS if you're running 10.4.x (x is any number). If you're running 10.5.x you just need to run software update to get the latest version of 10.5 and iTunes which the iPhone can be used with.
