Is my internal HD broken?

My MacBook Pro (4 years old) got frozen so I had to shut it down with power button. When I tried to switch it on Instead of loading OS X i have been offered restore from time machine, reinstall os, get help online and disk utility. My disk has two partition one used to be bootcamp - now it is empty 100 GB space, and the second one was the main one with OS I have verified this disk and it said that disk needs to be repair, when I tried to repair it it said it can't be repaired and I have to backup my data and erase this disk. So I have formatted disk several times (in format: extended, journaled) and tried to reinstall OS again but unfortunately there is always some error which saying that disk is damaged  and needs to be erased. I have tried it several times and nothing seems to work. I have also tried to change all disk partition back into one it it says "couldn't unmount disk" when I am trying to erase all the main disk it has the same problem. The S.M.A.R.T. Status is verified. Any suggestions what else I can try or is my disk broken forever and needs to be replaced? It also making quite strange noises every time when I am trying to verify, erase or install the system. Thanks for your ideas.

Misha2410,
since you’ve reformatted your internal disk several times, it sounds as though its current contents are not in need of preservation.
Do you still have the model-specific grey installation DVDs that originally came with your 17-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro? If so, then you could try booting from the one labelled “Mac OS X Install DVD” (by putting it in the SuperDrive and holding down the C key as you power up) and try its Disk Utility to erase your internal disk, in case there’s a problem with the Lion recovery partition that is currently on your internal disk. If you are able to erase your internal disk from the Disk Utility on the grey DVD, then reïnstall Snow Leopard on your internal disk, use Software Update to get it to 10.6.8, and then redownload Lion from the Mac App Store (gratis if you’ve previously purchased it) and reïnstall it on your internal disk.
If you don’t have the model-specific grey installation DVDs that originally came with your MacBook Pro, then I’d highly recommend purchasing a replacement set from either Apple or iFixit — those grey DVDs also have the Apple Hardware Test for your model MacBook Pro, which could help diagnose a hardware problem on your internal disk, in case that’s the cause of your current situation.

can bootcamp be used with Windows install disk on an external drive (internal is broken) ?

With Boot Camp, you must install Windows onto in internal HDD (or SSD).  If you are referring that your internal Optical drive is broken, you might be able to install Windows from an external drive, but you might not.  I have heard varying levels of success with that.  I'm not sure what the official stance is, but I do know that if youe machine shipped with an internal optical drive, then you must use that to install Windows using Boot Camp and not swap it out for a "data doubler" and try to install from an external optical drive.

  • LabVIEW Internal SCC broken & files are locked

I'm working with LabVIEW 6.0.2, using the Internal SCC System. I've lost my SCC storage and I'm not likely to recover it. I've got local copies, but they have been locked by the SCC system. I am searching my archives for unlocked versions.
The question: Is there any way to unlock the vis without the SCC system?

To unlock a VI manually you go in VI Properties>Security and check "Unlocked". If you have a lot of VIs, make an utility that scan all VIs in memory (load your project in memory) and use the VI Server method "Set Lock State" to uinlock the VI.
You may also need to remove the "Read-Only" VI files attribute.

  • How do I format the internal HD on an iMac

I tried to install Lion on iMac 2004 (2008)
Now the HD has a problem. I won't unmount via Disk Utility.
The partition with the system shows a circle with a slash through it.
The Mac will boot into other systems on both the internal and external drives.
But the system on the internal is broken. I used the system restor to start up Lion.
There are hundreds of gigabytes missing.
The HD is formatted in 2 partitions. One for Lion, one for Tiger.
I want to get rid of the Tiger partition. Disk Utility tries but can not unmount the Tiger partition.
I think I have to reformat the HD back into 1 partition and instal Lion on that.
It this possible? The Lion partitioin only has 15% free space. I can't just go ahead and use it.
    Thanks

    Thanks Allan
    1. This old iMac had a Tiger install DVD. I don't know why, but it kicks it out now. Maybe it is scratched or now incompatible.
    2. I have no 'Snow Leopard' install DVD.
    3. I have no 'Lion DVD'
But after I restarted, the partitions unmounted. I erased the sick partition. I downloaded the Lion Combo Update 10.7.3 from Apple. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the old OSX System 10.7 into the clean partition. I updated the 10.7 to 10.7.3 using the new system update DMG I had downloaded from Apple. I erased the old 10.7 partition and merged the now empty partition into the 10.7.3 sysem partition to get maximum space for the new system.
All good to go. I lost some application registrations along the way, but am gathering them back from their respective emails. Some applications no longer work with the message "Power PC applications are no longer supported." Time flies when your having fun. AlephOne still plays the Marathon Infinity games though.
I am very happy to have tools like CCC, SpeedDownload, and Disk Tools that can let a power user on a slow inernet connection do tasks best done by a real technician. I only wish I had the kind of Internet access that Apple seems to think everybody has. I tried many times to update Lion using the App Store. It would sit there for hours 'downloading.' Finally I just used SpeedDownload to get the DMG from the Apple Support site.
Thanks again for your interest in helping others get their Macs working again.

  • Flattening / Optimizing loses all internal links

I work for a Software Service that converts PDFs to SWFs for view on Flipbook software on desktop/mobile devices.
We recommend optimizing the PDF, with the transparency option on (which just uses Flattener settings) because sometimes tranparencies can convert in less that desireable ways.
    http://support.uberflip.com/entries/21130717-2-3-4-pdf-optimization-setting-recommendation s
We've found that the flattening of transparencies causes any internal links to break.  The link boxes remain, but their action no longer takes you to the correct target page, no action is taken at all.  External/Website links are not affected and work fine.
I've attached 2 PDFs.  The first "with internal links.pdf" is before optimizing, and has 2 internal links on the cover page (middle and bottom).  There is also an external link on the top banner title.
    https://www.box.com/shared/static/qgc9edpyf0ps1u32j2cm.pdf
The second file is "with internal links - Optimized Internal links broken.pdf" .  Although the external link on top is maintained and works fine, the middle and bottom internal links no longer work.
    https://www.box.com/shared/static/ll36o3aoystbpf5g4din.pdf
Any advice on why this is happening?  Can I flatten/optimize without losing these internal links?
    THanks!

I am experiencing the same issue with Adobe Acrobat XI. If you examine the link details before and after the optimization it appears that the optimize process is losing the goto action details.

  • My Macbook air laptop sound, fan and speed is messed up, how do I fix it?

Where do I start. One random day I came home to find out that my sound has been muted. I tried to fix it with headphones, reseting the PRAM, google, and even by asking my schools computer tech. Some times the mute button would disappear and the sound bar would be in color but their would still be no sound. After  the computer tech went on his account on the laptop to un-mute it, which he couldnt, he told me that my built in speakers dont work and would need to be replaced next year. Im like okay no problem, that same day i closed my laptop and found that the light was still on, I asked a friend and he said the black bar between the keypad and screen is what activates the laptop to shut off, which means its broken, so in between class periods i either shut down my laptop or put it to sleep. The next day my laptop starts to run slow and as soon as i power it on the fan runs immediately but the laptop isnt hot. My mouse moves at normal speed but my applications are running slow. This all happened in one week which is this week. My battery dies at a normal pace though.

This is a school given macbook air for a magnet program called iPrep, so i cant download anything with our administration password
This is my second laptop out of the 3 years ive been in the program. My first laptop started to break after the sound got muted and my laptop ended up with an X on the battery and would only turn on when a charger is plug but would go super slow. This makes me scared cause i dont want that happening at all to this one.
    Problems
Sound is muted, it sometimes un-mutes but there is still no sound, internal speakers broken
When closed the screen display is still open
Computer applications go slow, fan turns on immediately
Any help, this is bothering me so much

    Hi Jollified,
Does your sound work when you try to use head/earphones? If so, try the following:
Plug your Headphones into your Mac.
Play a sound through them (a song for example), then stop the sound.
Make sure 'Preferences' is isn't open. If it is, Quit.
    Launch System Preferences > Sounds.
While the Sounds tab is open and set to 'Headphones', pull out the Headphones from the jack.
You should see your Mac reset to 'Internal Speakers'
Also, I see you have tried resetting the PRAM, have you tried resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)? Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support
As for your MacBook not sleeping when you close the lid, there are many reasons this can occur.
First of all, check out Apples article on the issue: OS X Yosemite: If your Mac won’t go to or stay in sleep If you find these steps don't help, try a few of the following:
A common cause for the Mac not sleeping is your printer. If there are queued jobs waiting to be printed, but your printer is switched off, for some reason you Mac just wont like it and simply will not go to sleep. System Preferences > Print and Scan > Open Print Queue
Do you have an Ethernet Cable connected? People have reported in the past that removing their Ethernet allowed their Mac to sleep. This goes for other things you may have connected directly to your Mac also.
Try heading into your Mac Preferences > Sharing and deselecting 'Internet Sharing' as well as 'Printer Sharing'.
Also deselect Wake For Network Access by heading to System Preferences > Energy Saver > Power Adapter > Wake For Network Access.
Energy Saver > Schedule > Startup or Wake - Uncheck.
Alternatively, set your system preferences to Never Sleep, and put into Sleep manually: System Preferences > Energy Saver > Computer Sleep > Never.
    Good luck!

  • How to listen through car stereo

i go to connect my iphone 4 to car stereo via aux plug & it doesnt work
how can i listen to my music on my iphone, thru car stereo

I have to assume that the iPhone played your music before using the same aux plug and cable?
    1) Make sure the plug is well seated into the jack hole.
    2) Check your cable, they sometimes get an internal wire broken. I had a cable that I had to jiggle the end connector to make it work sporadically. Tried to repair it, but wires too thin and delicate, so I had to buy a new cable. Oh well...

  • Load applications using time machine

    Hi
I have two imacs on an ethernet network. This morning one of them just had a flashing folder in the middle of the screen with a question mark in it. I have an old clone of the system on an external hard drive that is partitioned with the clone on one partition and time machine on the other. I managed to boot the mac from the external hard drive. I cannot see in internal hard drive on the desk top but if I go to disk utilities. I can see it in the side window named media. Do you thing the internal is broken and if so will I be able to save myself time loading on all my applications by using time machine to restore the system back to what it was before and not have to find all the disks and updates again. Also can time machine be used as a boot disk to start a broken mac
    Thanks
    Chris

    Hi
Thanks for your help, It appears that my hard disk has had it and a repairer is going to put me a new one in. He will put a basic system on the machine 10.5.2 I think. When I get the machine home can I just go restore and time machine will put all my applications emails etc. back on to the machine
Yes. He doesn't really have to install OSX, but no doubt will, just to be sure it's working.
do I have to use my startup disk to reload the system myself before I can get these back on the machine.
You do have to use the Install disc, but you don't install OSX from it. You use the Installer utility on it to restore your entire system from the backups (assuming you didn't omit anything important). That's all laid out in #14 of the FAQ Tip.

  • Apple Cinema Display & Power Adapter

I just picked up a new 23" ACD, got it hooked up to my MBP. I had the power adapter box standing vertically on my desk. Anyways, While I was working on organizing the cables, SLAM!, the power adaper box tipped over onto the desk. now sitting horizontally from the 90 degree tip. Do I have anything to worry about such as internal damage to the power adapter?
Also, how come the manual said not to carry the display by the stand? But it just make more sense carrying the display by the stand, this way not having the screen itself lift that heavy-weight stand.
    MacBook Pro - 15.4" Glossy , Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33GHz, 2GB RAM, 120GB HD   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

My desk top is made of wood board, so it can echoes major sound from just small impact. The power adapter was standing vertically, then tips and lays flat horizontally. Sort of like a iPod tips over when it's not correctly connected into the dock.
I just shook power adapter to hear for any sound of any internal components broken off. Turned out no sound but a tiny bit of stiff rattling. Though it's still function, I'm still paranoid and worried.
As for carrying the ACD, Dave you made a good point, I dont really think it'll hurt if holding it by the stand upright position, which I did. The manual probably meant not to hold it by the stand upside down or in a 90 degress position, which increases the chance of the screen knock into something. The stand secures the screen and it's designed to hold the weight of the screen, I don't see why carrying this display by the stand in a upright position will be a issue.

  • Installing Windows 8 Black Screen

I am trying to install Windows 8 on my 2011 MBP 15".  I downloaded Windows 8 via DreamSpark and burned it to DVD and also loaded it on a flash drive.  Problem is, when I boot from the flash drive it only boots in EFI mode, which won't work since the disk needs to be GPT and not MBR for me to install it and I do not not want to format my entire disk.
So I try to boot up using the DVD (which I assume is in BIOS mode) and I just get a black screen.  I have burned it twice, once on my Mac and once on a PC. Note: I am using an external DVD drive instead of my internal since my internal is broken.  I don't think this is a problem since it actually reads the DVD as bootable.
Any suggestions? Can I boot the flash drive in BIOS mode? Thanks!

mouse cursor in the middle of the screen, but the start screen with the tiles is not displayed.
Usually it is nVidia users who complain of this.  An explanation would be that you are seeing your secondary monitor display in an Extended display configuration.  When you press Win- etc. it would show on your primary monitor (which you can't
see).  So, press Win-P anyway and imagine that you can see its display.  Then you would press CursorUp, Enter and switch display configurations so you could see something.
only happens from a cold boot.
Then there is a feature in a boot that makes this change.  Try using Win-P again when you can see it to see what the configuration is then.

  • Hi ! I have a big problem with my MacBook Pro Mid 2010 ! It may be broken or what seems to be the problem with the video drivers ? I have a built in internal Graphic 288 of RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M of 512 of RAM !

    On Mountain Lion :
It happens to turn of my monitor in different situations. Sometimes i believe i have my graphic video broken ! In my town i don't have Apple doctors so i dont risk to go to a service non authorized from apple !
For example there was a day when it turns off when a simply pinch with thumb and 3 fingers for launchbad ...and the opperating sistem it should be restart from power button ! That was when i had Mountain lion 10.7.5 update
Other situation was with photoshop cs6, cs5, cs4 30 days trial versions ...i couldn't buy any versions so i decided to test a earlier versions that can match with my sistem requirements. In all of this three situations my display had turned off after opening a image or photo or 3d graphics in photoshop...anyway sadness.
Other situation : One day i was simply relaxing surfing facebook and ...than i've just simply open an advertising link ...and on that page i was waiting to load a video that used another player than flash player of youtube. Even two seconds didn't stayed open and trust me it turned off my display once again !
    After Mountain Lion :
I told my story to to someone who holds an MacBook Pro i5 etc. and he told me to test the new mavericks maybe it's something broken in my operating system.... and believe me after 2 days of happiness with OS X MAVERICKS , last night my computer restarted because of a problem, and 2 hours ago again....why ? i don't know ! Maybe Video RAM or maybe Memory RAM or Maybe simple conflicts between Trial Photoshop and OS X or maybe my macbook it's 2 old...or i don't know ....for how much i used this mac it should run as an mustang !    MacBook Pro i7 Mid 2010 HDD 500 , 4 GB of DDR 3 , Intel built in Graphic 288 and an NVIDIA GE FORCE 512 , 15 inch display monitor , 283 real cicle counts ( my mac was used as an iphone while charging and using battery) ...i don't know what to do ! Please help !
The Operating System shoes me everytime this error !

Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
             com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff
                dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000

                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000
Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…
    Good luck,
    Clinton

Your PowerBook comes with a minimum of 512 megabytes (MB) of 533
MHz Double Data Rate (DDR2) Synchronous Dynamic Random-Access Memory
(SDRAM) installed. Both memory slots can accept an SDRAM module that meets the

  • Can I disable broken headphone jack? and get sound to internal speakers?

HP G72T-200 CTO Notebook PC WINDOWS 7
My laptop has a broken headphone jack (piece of plastic fell out of it) and thinks there is something plugged into the jack and won't default to the internal speakers. I've rolled back, reloaded drivers, run audio sound fix it thing, etc. Headphones will work if you hold plug and jiggle to the side. Is there anyway to just disable the jack so I can hear sound through the internal speakers?

    Hey TR,
    21Jan...
Can you stick a powered speaker on that jack and fix it so it doesn't wiggle much until you can get it fixed?
    22 Jan...
The only fixes I have found for this are for Linux.
One can risk a registry fix, though I've not found a sure way to do it.  The fix depends on knowing your sound card (I do not), and knowing the exact entry fix (I might, but I won't risk your system).
My sage advice is to get it fixed and be done with it.
It is my pleasure to assist.

  • Reinstall (broken internal dvdrom, using firewire dvdrom) problem

    Hi
I'm trying to reinstall Tiger on my iBook G4 using an external (fw) dvdrom, the dvdrom is recognized in OSX. The internal dvdrom is broken (has a disc that won't come out).
When I try to boot the iBook G4 from the mac os x disk in the external dvdrom, nothing seems to happen, the Apple remains on the screen and the process indicator keeps spinning..
I tried holding c; pressing option, command, shift, delete and holding option to select the Mac OS X install disk, each method gives me the same result :s.

It's the Tiger Install Disk, I think it's an universal disk, it didn't come with my iBook...
Most iBooks require a special version of Mac OS X. This could explain why you can't startup from that disk. Exactly which model iBook do you have? (Is it 12" or 14" and what's the processor speed?) Which version of Mac OS X is included on the Tiger install disk? (It should be printed on the disk.) Here's a list of which version of Mac OS X is required by different models of iBooks:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
You may need to call Apple and get the right set of install disks.

  • Why was my question deleted without being answered?  Broken screen want to erase internal memory

Why was my question deleted without being answered?  I thought this was a help board.
my droid razr's screen is broken and not responsive. I want to delete the internal memory, passwords, pictures, ect before sending it back to verison in exchange for the warranty replacement.
    Thanks

        Hi mountain444!
Sorry to learn of the fate of your RAZR. No worries, I can help you erase the device. You would simply do a master reset. I know you can't see the screen, and this is why there is a Preferred Method for this, as well as an Alternate Method. Please follow the steps for the Alternate Method listed below. Thanks!
