Is my iphone 4 battery shot or is it a software problem?

There are probably hundreds of questions like this, but I couldn't find any answers.
A few days ago my iphone 4 suddenly shut off. The battery wasn't full, but it wasn't empty. It had about 40%.
I pressed the power button, the apple logo appeared, and then rebooted again multiple times.
So, I tried holding down the home and power buttons as suggested by others.
After doing that nothing happened. I waited for a while and tried again. It said I had to connect to Itunes.
I do that, restore, and backup my phone. I unplug the charger and it just shots off.
I then have to connect to Itunes and restore it all over again.
Sometimes it won't show the connect to Itunes message. Sometimes it brings up the lock screen asking me to reconfigure the phone as if it were new or it brings up my backedup settings.
So, if I'm finally able to get to the lock screen it will show the battery icon(not the one at the top right) as completely empty, completely full, or with a little bit of red in it. The battery icon at the top right will show 1% or fully charged.
Another problem that I'm having is my phone won't shut off. I hold down the power button and slide to turn it off, but if my phone is still plugged in, the apple logo appears and tells me to restore again.
If my battery is low, it should show the battery icon telling me to charge it. But, that doesn't appear anymore. It justs boots up.
I'm positive nothing is wrong with my dock. I've tried other chargers and other computers too.
If my battery were completely shot, the phone shouldn't even start when plugged in. So now I think there's a software issue messing with my phone.
Also, I read that if the phone shows the fully charged icon constantly, it should be serviced.
Maybe I missed them, but I haven't found a thread similar to the problems I have. I probably should just get it serviced, but if I could avoid the trip that would be great. My phone isn't Jailbroken if anyone is wondering.

Please correct your porfile: iPhone 4 do not have IOS 6.1.4.
The usual troubleshooting steps are, also remember to test it after every step:
1. Restart
2. Reset
3. Restore from backup
4. Restore as new.
If no joy, make an Appointment with the Apple genius and have them evaluate

Faulty UK USB Power Brick/Wall Charger Drains iPhone Battery

I'm writing this post more from an informative perspective, rather than from a question seeking a response.
I have a genuine Apple UK USB wall charger which is at least 2 years old - it either came with my current iPhone 5 or old iPhone 4 from 4 years ago (both look identical).
Recently on charging my phone overnight, I've woken up (late - as the alarm consequently didn't work) to find that the power had drained from my phone rather than the expected charge happening. Having an old phone, I assumed it was the fault of the phone and booked it in for a genius bar visit. Being annoyed about the 1 week+ delay for the next genius bar appointment, I purchased a new iPhone to use temporarily for a week which would then be returned for a full refund on receipt of a replacement for mine.
On testing out the brand new iPhone with the charger, it appears that the same happens:
On plugging in the new phone to the charger once it has been fully charged (100%), within 5 minutes the charge in the phone has become 97%.
I'm guessing it is quite unusual for a USB brick to fail in this way - to actually drain the phone of charge?

I have the dock connector option for my factory stereo as well and am also seeing it drain the iPhone battery. What's odd is that it used to charge just fine.
Initially the iPhone wouldn't route audio through the dock connector in my vehicle. It would see that it was plugged in and gave the Airplane Mode prompt, but would only play audio from its internal speaker. It did, however, charge as expected. Then the iPhone software update 1.0.1 came out which solved the audio issue and allowed me to get the audio to my deck properly. I can't say for sure if it was still charging the iPhone at that point, but it definitely wasn't /draining/ it. Then, right around the time of the 1.0.2 update I started to notice significant drops in battery power when unplugging it after a drive to or from work (usually around 25 minutes). The audio still works fine, but the battery seems to drop at least 15-20% over that drive, whether I have any music playing or just have the iPhone idle but plugged in.
So, software problem, maybe? I have a hard time believing something suggendly changed with the dock connector in my vehicle...

Iphone battery draining fast after reboot

hi, my iphone battery drains completely from 100% to 0% in a few hours if I switch the phone off and turn back on. i recently found this out once after I switched off the phone.....But there is no problem (battery can last 1~2 days for normal use)if i do NOT switch off after recharge.
Is this a software issue or hardware?? Has anyone got the same problem? Thank you so much.

It is not an iOS 4 issue; it is a very rare problem, and has occurred with all versions. But if you search you will see reports are in the dozens, with 100 million phones in use that's a vanishingly small number. It usually means that memory in the phone is corrupted. If rebooting the phone doesn't fix it you should restore the phone using iTunes.

Fix for iPhone Battery Life

Hi, I have done this with IOS 5 through 6 and it works.
I have done this serveral times with my phone, as battery life decreases. I have not figured out what is the original cause of my battery problems, but every now and again, something starts to dain my battery at a rappid rate, in an hour or two. This is the fix to reset it.
1 - Back up you phone to iTunes
2 - Go into the settings under General and at the bottom sellect Reset and reset your iPhone erassing all data.
3 - Once it resets and shows you the default "out of the box" screan, power it off
4 - Recharge it FULLY.... I leave it over night.
5 - Power it on again
6 - Restore your settings via iTunes.
7 - Your done
In my experiance, if you skip any of the steps, like not powering off when your recharge or not recharging fully, will result in it still draining quickly.

OK, I agree that is a completely false statement. The rest of the article is pretty good.
If you assume a linear decrease in battery charge for each full cycle (which it really isn't, but much easier to model in a spreadsheet). Then 80% of original charge after 400 full cycles is approximately 0.8% loss in battery charge per full charge cycle (again this is a simplification, stay with me). This means that after 400 cycles, you are at approximately 80% of your original total charge level. As stated by Apple.
So, extrapolating that out to EOL (end of life) which Apple assumes to be 50% battery charge, it would take approximately 1,000 full charge cycles for your battery to be EOL (according to Apple). It would actually be slightly less than that since it won't be a linear function.
For me, that's 2 to 4 years of use depending on whether or not I continue using the iPhone as much as I have this first full week.

I have an Iphone battery extender that now appears not to work since the IOS7 upgrade? It is not an official Apple product but has worked well for over a year? any ideas as to a solution the battery charge indicator comes on then goes out after 20 secs

Not long after that (the next day at work) I noticed that the battery life was better or seemed to be but it wasn’t quite what I thought it should be. So as I am “OCD” and do not mind doing some trial and error on my phone (I mean what do we have to lose at this point right????) Here are my findings and there is a significant increase in the battery life. Just for good measure even after I discovered the difference in mine I took my wife’s 4s and performed the exact same steps to hers and she is back to the way the 4s is supposed to be, and the way it was in the beginning when we first purchased them!! (might I say she was a little reluctant to let me have my will with hers since doing the 5.0.1 update was all my doings anyway and took our phones from us so to speak, but being a good wife she trusted me one last time ;-)
THE PROCESS AS I DID IT:
OPEN ICloud AND IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY DONE SO DO A BACK UP, THIS STEP IS SOLELY TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU WILL HAVE YOUR CONTACTS AFTER YOU ARE FINISHED WITH THIS WHOLE PROCESS. WE WILL NOT BE RESTORING FROM iCloud SO THIS STEP IS NOT FOR A RESTORE PURPOSE.
AFTER YOU HAVE BACKED UP TO iCloud
OPEN YOUR SETTINGS ICON AND ONE CATEGORY AT A TIME STARTING WITH THE AIRPLANE MODE AND START GOING DOWN THE LIST, GO INTO EACH ONE AND MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IN THAT TAB AND SUB-TABS IN TURNED OFF. **EVERYTHING**

NOW AFTER PHONE POWERS BACK UP, PLUG IT INTO YOUR COMPUTER AND OPEN iTunes, AGAIN STOP THE SYNC PROCESS !!!!!
O.K. NOW STILL IN iTunes CHOOSE THE “APPS” TAB AND LOOK AND MAKE SURE YOU WANT THE APPS THAT ARE THERE AND WAITING TO BE SYNCD IF YOU DO NOT WANT THEM ALL UN-CHECK THE ONES THAT YOU DON’T WANT. THIS MAY BE A GOOD TIME TO BE “CHOOSY” AND NOT PUT A BUNCH OF JUNK ON YOUR PHONE THAT MAY NOT LET YOU KNOW IF THE UPDATE “TOOK” SO TO SPEAK.
AFTER CHOOSING APPS YOU WANT GO AHEAD AND CHECK THE SYNC BOX AND CLICK SYNC AT THE BOTTOM.
AFTER YOU HAVE YOUR APPS ON YOUR PHONE YOU CAN GO TO “SETTINGS” AND GO TO THE iCloud TAB AND ENTER IN YOUR iCloud ACCOUNT SIGN IN INFO. ONCE YOU DO THAT TURN OFF THE THINGS YOU DON’T WANT IT TO BACK UP. MATTER OF FACT I TURNED EVERYTHING OFF AND THE ONLY ONE THAT I LET “KEEP INFORMATION ON PHONE” WAS CONTACTS. (REMEMBER EARLIER WHEN WE WHERE HERE AND I MENTIONED WE WOULD COME BACK TO THIS LATER? WELL HERE WE ARE…ONLY FOR CONTACTS)
AFTER SYNCING CONTACTS (AND GIVE IT A FEW MINUTES TO DOWNLOAD THEM ALL) I CHOSE TO DELETED MY iCloud ACCOUNT AND KEEP CONTACTS INFO ON PHONE. (YOU CAN DO WHAT YOU WANT BUT IT MAY RUN IN THE BACKGROUND ALL THE TIME AND MESS YOUR UPDATE UP) USE AT OWN RISK
NOW GO BACK INTO YOUR SETTINGS AND SET EVERYTHING UP LIKE YOU WANT IT LIKE YOUR SOUNDS ETC., I KEEP AUTOMATIC BRIGHTNESS OFF AND SET IT ABOUT 1/3 THE WAY UP, ON YOUR EMAILS I SET MINE UP NOT TO “PUSH” I WANTED TO BE ABLE TO DOWNLOAD ANY NEW EMAILS WHEN I ACTUALLY OPEN MY EMAIL APP.

DO NOT LET YOUR PHONE SYNC JUST YET OR YOU WILL UNDO EVERYTHING YOU JUST DID MANUALLY WITH YOUR PHONE.
IN THE LEFT COLUMN IN iTunes YOU WILL SEE YOUR iPhone’s NAME RIGHT CLICK ON IT (WINDOWS) OR TWO FINGER TAP (MAC) AND CHOOSE “BACKUP” AGAIN YOU MAY THINK A LOT OF THIS IS REDUNDANT AND YOU COMPUTER GURU’S OUT THERE MAY KNOW A BETTER WAY BUT THIS IS WHAT WORKED FOR ME (REPEATADLY) AND SO FOR THE PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT MAY NOT KNOW OR ARE FRUSTRATED THE UPDATE ISN’T WORKING THIS IS MEANT TO HELP WHOEVER IS ABOUT TO GIVE UP ON THERE PHONE.
AFTER YOU HAVE BACKED YOU PHONE UP IN iTunes (WHICH WE DID JUST FOR SAFE MEASURE) CLICK ON “SUMMARY” AND CHOOSE THE “DOWNLOAD & UPDATE”, THIS WILL TAKE ABOUT 40 MINS.
O.K. NOW AFTER YOUR PHONE HAS DOWNLOADED AND UPDATED, YOU MAY BE AT A POINT TO WHERE YOU ARE CHOOSING WHAT TO LET RUN ON YOUR PHONE LIKE “SIRI, LOCATION SERVICES, iCloud, ETC.” CHOOSE “NO” FOR ALL OF THEM SO NOT LET ANYTHING START TO RUN ON YOUR PHONE. NOW AT THE STEP OF SETTING UP iCloud OR iTunes CHOOSE SKIP OR IF IT WON’T LET YOU SKIP CHOOSE “SET UP WITH iTunes” AND LET YOUR PHONE CONNECT TO iTunes. (REMEMBER DO NOT LET YOUR PHONE SYNC AT THIS POINT EITHER…STOP IT !!
NOW AT THIS POINT YOU ARE GOING TO DO PRETTY MUCH THE SAME THING BUT AS YOU WILL SEE IT WILL BE A LITTLE DIFFERENT.
AGAIN CHOOSE THE “SUMMARY” TAB AND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SCREEN YOU WILL SEE “UPDATE” OR “RESTORE”, THIS TIME YOU ARE GOING TO CHOOSE “RESTORE”! IT’S O.K. PUSH IT, DON’T BE SCARED…EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE ALRIGHT. LOL
NOW THIS PART IS CRITICAL…AFTER YOU CLICK “RESTORE” THE NEXT SCREEN YOU SHOULD BE LOOKING AT (AND I DON’T REMEMBER IS IT PROCEEDS WITH THE RESTORE OR IF YOU HAVE ONE MORE OPTIONS SCREEN) IS EITHER ONE THAT ASKS IF YOU WANT TO RESTORE TO LIKE NEW FACTORY SETTINGS OR HAS A TEXT BOX TO CHOOSE THE PHONE NAME…EITHER WAY…YOU WANT TO CHOOSE RESTORE PHONE TO FACTORY SETTING (LIKE NEW) THEN WHEN YOU ARE LOOKING AT A SCREEN THAT READS “iPhone Name” AND IS HIGHLIGHTED CHOOSE THE NAME YOU WANT YOU PHONE TO BE. THEN RIGHT BELOW THAT IS A FEW “CHECK BOXES” UN-SELECT THE ONE THAT READS SYNC AND RESTORE TO A BACK-UP. YOU DO NOT WANT TO RESTORE TO A BACK-UP !!!!
NOW ONCE THE RESTORE PROCESS HAS FINISHED AND YOUR PHONE HAS RE-BOOTED YOU SHOULD BE LOOKING AT A SCREEN THAT ASKS YOU TO CHOOSE YOUR COUNTRY, AGAIN GO THROUGH ALL THE STEPS AND AGAIN DO NOT CHOOSE YES TO ANY OF THE OPTIONS LIKE SIRI OR LOCATION SERVICES OR iCloud. CHOOSE NO TO ALL. IT MAY NOT LET YOU CONTINUE PAST THE iTunes ACCOUNT PART IF NOT GO AHEAD AND ENTER IN YOUR iTunes INFO I.E. EMAIL & PASSORD.
NOW YOU SHOULD BE LOOKING AT A PHONE THAT LOOKS AS PLAIN AS THE DAY YOU BOUGHT IT !!!! EXCITING HUH?...J/K THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT. NOW WHAT I DID AT THIS POINT IS A HARD RESTART WHERE YOU HOLD THE “HOME” BUTTON AND THE “LOCK SCREEN” BUTTON AT THE SAME TIME LET THE PHONE BLACK OUT AND KEEP HOLDING THEM UNTIL YOU SEE THE APPLE ICON, NOW LET GO OF THEM BOTH.
AFTER THAT DO A SOFT RESET THIS IS WHEN YOU HOLD JUST THE “LOCK SCREEN” BUTTON UNTIL THE “POWER OFF” SLIDER APPEARS AT THE TOP, WHEN IT DOES GO AHEAD AND SLIDE IT TO TURN YOU PHONE OFF.
AFTER A MOMENT TURN YOU PHONE BACK ON
AFTER PHONE BOOTS UP GO INTO "SETTINGS" AND CHOOSE RESET ALL SETTINGS AND LET IT CYCLE THROUGH AGAIN.
NOW AFTER PHONE POWERS BACK UP, PLUG IT INTO YOUR COMPUTER AND OPEN iTunes, AGAIN STOP THE SYNC PROCESS !!!!!
O.K. NOW STILL IN iTunes CHOOSE THE “APPS” TAB AND LOOK AND MAKE SURE YOU WANT THE APPS THAT ARE THERE AND WAITING TO BE SYNCD IF YOU DO NOT WANT THEM ALL UN-CHECK THE ONES THAT YOU DON’T WANT. THIS MAY BE A GOOD TIME TO BE “CHOOSY” AND NOT PUT A BUNCH OF JUNK ON YOUR PHONE THAT MAY NOT LET YOU KNOW IF THE UPDATE “TOOK” SO TO SPEAK.
AFTER CHOOSING APPS YOU WANT GO AHEAD AND CHECK THE SYNC BOX AND CLICK SYNC AT THE BOTTOM.
AFTER YOU HAVE YOUR APPS ON YOUR PHONE YOU CAN GO TO “SETTINGS” AND GO TO THE iCloud TAB AND ENTER IN YOUR iCloud ACCOUNT SIGN IN INFO. ONCE YOU DO THAT TURN OFF THE THINGS YOU DON’T WANT IT TO BACK UP. MATTER OF FACT I TURNED EVERYTHING OFF AND THE ONLY ONE THAT I LET “KEEP INFORMATION ON PHONE” WAS CONTACTS. (REMEMBER EARLIER WHEN WE WHERE HERE AND I MENTIONED WE WOULD COME BACK TO THIS LATER? WELL HERE WE ARE…ONLY FOR CONTACTS)
AFTER SYNCING CONTACTS (AND GIVE IT A FEW MINUTES TO DOWNLOAD THEM ALL) I CHOSE TO DELETED MY iCloud ACCOUNT AND KEEP CONTACTS INFO ON PHONE. (YOU CAN DO WHAT YOU WANT BUT IT MAY RUN IN THE BACKGROUND ALL THE TIME AND MESS YOUR UPDATE UP) USE AT OWN RISK
NOW GO BACK INTO YOUR SETTINGS AND SET EVERYTHING UP LIKE YOU WANT IT LIKE YOUR SOUNDS ETC., I KEEP AUTOMATIC BRIGHTNESS OFF AND SET IT ABOUT 1/3 THE WAY UP, ON YOUR EMAILS I SET MINE UP NOT TO “PUSH” I WANTED TO BE ABLE TO DOWNLOAD ANY NEW EMAILS WHEN I ACTUALLY OPEN MY EMAIL APP.
WELL THERE YOU GO…I HOPE IT HELPS YOU GET YOU PHONE BACK (AND YOUR LIFE) LOL

Do that repeatedly and you soon will have a completely useless battery on your hands.
Solution - charge it up BEFORE it auto shuts off on you.
Repeatedly deep cycling a Lithium cell will ruin it much faster than charging it when only partially discharged.

The data is still there - every so often when I switch it on, it comes up with the main icon screen, rather than the emegency calls only screen (which it does most of the time), and I can get to my contacts, photos, and so on, but it won't connect to any mobile/cell network provider, including my network here in the UK - O2.

Does SMS relay iOS 8.1 cause extra iPhone battery usage?

I was messing with both SMS relay the other day and noticed that my battery drained almost twice as fast..
I was also messing with handoff and basically just testing the new integration features between Yosemite and iOS8.1
But my question is about SMS relay.. Does anyone know if this will us up more iPhone battery than if I wasn't using SMS relay and just SMSing from the iPhone itself?
Does SMS relay work via bluetooth? Could this be a cause for extra battery usage? It could be possible that I was jus using my phone a bit extra that day but I just want to make sure as I have SMS relay turned off for now, don't want battery life dropping..

I had the same problem. I realized that it had everything to do with my calendar app. My iCalendar was having a difficult time fetching information from my Outlook and Yahoo Calendar. Causing my battery percentage to decline at a very rapid rate. (50% in a 4 hour time frame). I resolved the problem by going into my Settings >" Messaging , Contact , Calendar" Setting > Clicking on one of my selected Accounts ( Outlook or Yahoo) and turning off the Calendar Sync. The problem seemed to go away after doing this. Now I'm only using 4% battery life in a 4 hour time frame in StandBy Mode. Well I Can only hope that this will help resolve the battery drainage issue. Iphone battery discharging quickly

My iPhone battery is discharging very quickly even when phone/ instrument is switched off. could some apps be running in the background on wifi? What do I need to do to prevent this?

I have had Iphones sinc the first one and now have a 4s and over the last few days mine has started discharging very quickly also. I charged it at work yesterday and left work at 6pm and it was at 100% at 8pm it was already down to 70%. There is something that has changed on mine and I can't figure it out. I have turned off Push and Location services so I'll see how it does today. I have not synced it for at least a week so I know there wasn't an update that caused it Mine is also running on 5.1.
I unpluged it this morning at 100% at 8am and it is now 11am and I am at 95% with all the above stuff turned off and it just sitting on my desk in sleep mode.

Need help with iphone battery charging please

hey all,
i have a problem with charging iphone battery,
i´ve had the phone for 8months now with no problems at all,
yesterday i used it as a modem for connecting to the internet and it worked just fine but the battery died so quick and now it wont charge at all
i used both charge connector and USB drive in the computer - nothing works, i already tried resseting it several times - didnt work either, i also tried plugging in a different cable - thta didnt help either so its basically turned into a brick, i noticed tho when i try to restart it there´s a couple wierd lines on my display but then it doesnt turn on or anything, it goes back to a black screen with battery picture and one red line indicating i need to charge it...
i tried to charge it overnight but the red line on the battery pic doesnt move or anything, there´s no sign of it charging at all and it doesnt even want to sync with the computer, i dont know what else to try
please help someone
