Is my iPod dead? :(

I've had my iPod Classic 80gb for a few months now, and had no problems.
That is until today, when I tried to turn it on, but nothing happened.
Turning the click-wheel, I found that the 'clicking' sound still remained, so I feared that the screen wasn't working. But, eventually, even that has stopped.
I've tried plugging the ipod into its charger, and into a laptop (via firewire), but alas, nothing happens.
I am highly traumatized. I feel as though I have lost a friend.
What should I do now? Contact Apple? Get it fixed? Replaced? Chuck it out the window and buy another off eBay?
Please help - I'm reaching the end of my tether, I'm not sure how much longer I can last.

Hey,
The EXACT thing has happened to my iPod
Im 100% gutted.
I hope this wont turn into a common fault,
as that would suck.
I have the 80GB iPod Classic - i got it at christmas, and it wont turn on, i have it on charge and nothings happening, even my computer cant detect it anymore. i hope we both find solutions as losing my iPod is horrible. Whats life without music and videos in your hand?
Good Luck.

Make sure you are using current iTunes on your computer. Click the iTunes Tab at the top of this page. Or try to Restore your iPhone with a different computer.

  • Why is my iPod dead?? (Brand new iPod)

    Hi!
I just bought a 60g Black iPod video, I took it out of the box, used it for about 3 hours then battery needed to be charged, so I plugged it up in my computer before going to sleep. Three hours after I plugged it, I checked on the screen and the battery was still charging (nothing abnormal at this point). I then decided to go to bed and leave the thing charging.
When I woke up, I checked my iPod and realised the screen was black. So I thought: Okay, it must be recharged.
I then wanted to load new songs in the computer and was surprised to see that the thing refused to turn on.
I check the "Hold" button, but everything was correct.
I read this site's FAQ, when it says that you must leave it layed down on a flat surface for about 24 hours. That' what I did, but nothing happened.
    Anyone experienced the same problem?
I'm now thinking of buying a Power adapter, but I dont want to pay $35 without being sure that this could fix my problem.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Dre

If you went totally dead, as soon as you hit it with external power it should wake up or most likely reboot (apple screen).
I think this must happen or something is wrong with the pod. You could charge for 20-30 minutes and try to do a reset. If that fails, I'll let a "pod head" comment on what to do next (like call apple).
In the future, never leave the pod connected unless you turn standby, power management, whatever - OFF. This way the PC stays on and the pod stays pumped. Also, I know its hard to resist but before using the pod you should have charged it fully when it came out of the box. It affects the battery life.

  • Is this iPod dead?

My wife's iPod appears to be dead. It is fully charged, I have attempted to restore it, and not much happens. The display is in black and white and it the click wheel doesn't work (although I could reset it by holding menu and select). Is it time to retire this iPod which worked fine two days ago?

I recently read a post about someone with a similar problem. He claimed that he was able to charge the battery by putting the iPod in disk mode and charging it via the wall/AC adapter.
    Good luck

  • Ipod dead (for no apparant reason)

This is very strange. I was sitting in a bus today listening to music when I was interupted and, so, turned off my Ipod. When I reached to turn it back on again (this was about a 5 minute interval) the Ipod wouldn't turn on. It was as if it were dead. So I tried pressing play, I tried resetting, I tried holding down the middle button, I tried switching to hold and then switching back but nothing happened. If any one knows of the problem or has an idea how to fix it, please let me know. Thanks in advance

Press "Menu"+"Select", wait until you see the Apple Logo

If still does not work, try to charge your iPod for few hours

  • IPod dead after carrying out RECOMMENDED security update!  Any ideas?

At the beginning of December 2006, I installed the most up to date version of iTunes when prompted to do so. I was then informed by iTunes that my iPod required a security update and so I downloaded this update. My iPod (5th Generation model) seemed to freeze half way through the process. It keeps attempting to load and then crashing when I try to switch it on. The iPod is now no longer being recognised at all by My Computer. I tried all of the recommended troubleshooting steps and advice with no success.
My iPod now doesn’t even turn on properly and given that the PC doesn’t recognise there is a device attached to it, we cannot take any of the troubleshooting steps to fix it.
If changes had been made to the PC, these may have caused the problem and I could have looked at some troubleshooting solutions such as tweaking with the PC registry, updates of drivers etc. However, it is clearly not a PC issue as I have tried to plug the iPod in to three PC’s with no success. The iPod hard drive no longer starts so I'm 99.9% certain it is an issue with the iPod hard drive – the security update has essentially scrambled/killed the iPod hard drive and it seems to need to be completely reset. I have tried the '5 R's' and that did not work. I also managed to get the iPod into diagnostics mode and it says it has issues!
I have had absolutely no problems whatsoever with my iPod prior to attempting this security update (which was recommended by Apple). The iPod has therefore mal-functioned through no fault of my own – if I hadn’t been prompted to download this security update, I have no doubts that it would still be in good working order.
    Any ideas!!
PS - this essential security update and subsequent death of my Ipod occurred exactly one day after my 1 year warranty expired!! Call me a cynic but do I smell a rat?
5th Generation iPod Video 30GB   Windows XP

My problem started after downloading 3.1.2. It gave an error message that said it could not install the program due to an error. It gave me the option of sending the error message to Apple. I declined. My ipod now only displays a screen that shows a usb cable being plugged into itunes. The computer will not read it and it will not sync. My ipod is basically dead. Ive tried all of the fixes to restart it but have had no success. Holding down the power and home button did not work. I held it for nearly 20 seconds. The power will shut off then the apple will appear. Then the usb cable appears again. I purchased my ipod on 10-1-09. Im going to take it back for an exchange.

  • U2 iPod dead!

I have the older U2 iPod and I think it's not working anymore. I've tried everything including connecting the iPod to the charger for 48 hours, resetting, connecting it to the computer, toggling the hold button. Right now, it's making a "tick" sound, probably coming from the hard drive. Besides that, whenever I try turning it on, a dead iPod icon pops up.
    Anyway I can fix this?
    thanks!

Based on your description, I think the problem is the hard drive. If you can get one for a reasonable cost, I'd give it a shot. But just remember what a new iPod costs, the video playing and other new feature, and the 10% the Apple Store should give you for your broken iPod. Don't spend too much on fixing a broken iPod.
If you don't have the plastic tools to open the iPod, you may want to get them first and try to open it. Some people find it difficult. With practice, it's actually pretty easy. You can find them on eBay by searching on +ipod tool+.
If your iPod also needs a new battery, most replacement batteries include those tools. Search on +ipod 4g battery+. Look for the highest mAh rating; higher means longer play time. The stock 4G iPod batteries are pretty good, so yours may be fine.
My technique for opening the iPod - Start at the top end. It's the best place to start because there are no plastic clips inside there. Using one of the tools, push up on the plastic half to open a thin gap, then try to push the flat edge of the plastic tool DOWN into the metal side of the gap. Careful... don't stab yourself. Once it is inserted, starting at this point, use the second tool to work it right along the seam, then down the right side, always pushing down into the metal side as you go. About half way down the right side, the clips on that side should release. Carefully open it from this side like a book. The left side has a thin ribbon cable connecting the two halves of the case, so do NOT yank it apart (the cable connection point will break). You can keep the two sides attached and lay it out flat like a book. If you want to disconnect the two halves, the ribbon cable and socket are fragile, so do it carefully and slowly.
After opening, it's obvious how the hard drive (and battery) are attached.

  • Argh - Is my iPod dead?

Well, i've have my ipod mini for around 2 years now, and for about a year its had battery problems but with alot of frustration I got over them. Listening to my ipod in the car this morning it said "you have no battery power bla bla bla.." and swiitched off after showing an out of battery sign. This is a usual occurance for my so i pressed the on button.. and nothing happened. When i plugged it into the computer - nothing. Charge it - Nothing. Is my ipod completley dead or do I just need a new battery? How much would that cost?
    Thanks
    Jennie x

Sounds like your battery IS dead. If you still like the Mini, it's worth replacing the battery. There are places that will do it for you, but first checkout this article I wrote on my experience replacing my battery AND upgrading the CF microdrive.

  • Help please Ipod dead

I have a 3rd gen ipod nano that will not even respond.I can not reset it at all.It is just dead.
It will not react when plugged in and I get no message when I plug the cord into it.

You may have totally depleted the battery. Connect it to a power source (a wall charger works best for this), let it charge for at least 30 minutes then Reset the iPod (turn the hold switch off [no orange showing] and hold down the menu and center buttons for six seconds, you may have to try this several times.). When it revives, fully charge it.

  • IPod dead? Battery dead, will not charge...

    Hi,
I've got a video iPod here, a black one, 30 GB. It's my dad's iPod and he was using it a few days ago but the battery is dead. I'm trying to charge it for him by plugging it into my Mac with his USB cable, and it doesn't power up, doesn't charge, doesn't sync... nothing! He usually charges and syncs it with USB and I've tried several cables (my iPhone cable plus another cable). Nothing seems to work.
Any idea what to try next... or is it just dead!?

Oh, I figured it out. I had to plug it in and THEN press the reset key combo. It's charging now...

  • IPod dead - battery emptied during startup

today I wanted to use my iPod. I pushed the button (click-wheel). The Apple-logo appeared. During startup the iPod shut off because the battery was empty.
I connected to USB (USB2.0 via a hub with seperate energy supply) and via the power connector but the iPod does not charge. It is dead. It's impossible to turn it on.

  • Older iPod dead after doing reset...

I have a second generation iPod nano. It's been working fine but I just plugged it in to charge, the apple logo came up as usual and it froze. I reset it by holding down the centre and menu buttons. The screen cleared but since then it's dead. there is no display even if connected to pc/power. Help?

Believe it or not sometimes it helps if you put it on a flat surface and then try and reset it. Make sure the hold switch is off and using TWO hands for this hold the menu button and the select (center) buttons down at the same time for about 10 - 15 seconds. Try that out.

  • Ipod Dead already?

i got my ipod 2 weeks ago. I left it charging for an hour today, when I came back it was very much overheated, the screen was blank, and itunes had apparently never even popped up. Now my ipod wont turn on. Ive done the select and menu button things and ive switched back ond forth on the hold button. The ipod wont charge. Nothing happens when I connect it to my comp and nothing happens when I use a separate plug in a wall outlet. What do I do... it shouldn't be completely dead after 2 weeks....its a video ipos

  • IPod Dead after charging!

    Hi,
Has anyone else had this problem, I fully charged my iPod and turned it off and locked it with the hold button on top, headphones not connected. I went to use it next day and it is completely dead, wont even switch on.
However connect it to the computer or mains and it starts charging again from scratch. It all works when connected to a power source and it works after initial charge etc... but leave it for any length of time and zero.
Any idea what is sucking the power from it when its switched off?
    Thanks

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

  • Ipod dead after installing new software

    Hi,
I downloaded updated software for my husband's 3g nano (last year's birthday present), so that I could install the Nike sport software (this year's birthday present!). The ipod software downloaded and installed fine, I didn't do the Nike one.
The next time he tried to turn on the ipod, there was no response at all.
The 'lock button' is not on.
Plugging it into a PC with a USB cable that works with my own ipod (same model)has no effect.
It appears to be completely dead.
It is only a couple of weeks out of warranty, bought 21/09/2007, fired up 29/09/2007 or later.
We have 5 ipods in the family at the last count, and mine is my third since the first one came out. We are definitely loyal customers, so I would hope that Apple might see it's way to stretching the warranty a fraction and sorting this out for us.
To whom can I appeal for help?
    Regards
    Angie

Wow. Thanks Mitch. When I saw the direction you were going, I thought that couldn't be the problem. But, I decided to remap the ipod anyway, and that was the problem. Thanks again

  • 2.2.1 update failure - iPod dead with black screen

The update resulted in an error and would not complete. Now my iPod is dead. The message says it is in restore mode and when I click to restore, it says that I need the current version of iTunes. I checked and it says iTunes is current. I tried on another computer running XP and it give the same message. iTunes recognises an iPod is connected but that's all. No name of the iPod or it's settings and content. I have tried holding the home and power buttons for 10 seconds, then release the power button etc., etc. Still the same. Tried other suggestion posted on the web, nothing works. It will not go into restore mode. I blieve it is stuck in DFU mode, indicated by its black screen. My iPod Touch is NOT HACKED. Apple, please help me!!! I bought it new a few months ago, and it worked beautifully until the 2.2.1 ubdate. Please help me bring it back from the dead, and restore my faith in your products! PLEASE HELP!!! iPod Touch, 2G, 8 gig

The only fix I could possibly see coming is to get the touch firmware re-flashed at a service outlet at this point. From reading about this problem in multiple forums around the net the firmware upgrade seems to be failing in different places during the install. My sons each have an ipod touch, one upgraded no problem, the other is blank screened and no response to the home/power button reset at all. Just endless unrecognized usb device messages. Perhaps a new windows driver install to regain connectivity but I do not think this can be fixed without re-flashing the firmware to the device directly without the use of iTunes. I'm very interested to see how they rectify this issue.
