Is my ipod FAKE?

bought a 2nd gen black 8gb ipod from an ebay reseller (positive feedback reseller) in 2008 and i'm sure it's fake. the coating has completely worn off and one of the audio channels doesn't work. my itunes on my laptop recognised it when i first plugged it in. where can i check with my serial number that it's a genuine ipod?

If you would like to have more information on your Macintosh (model, date of production, etc) then enter your serial number at this site. Information, based on the serial number, will be shown. Covers all Apple products including computers, laptops, monitors, printers and batteries & iPods. http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html

The only way to get an apple ID is to have an email account you've never used before. The only thing you can do is make her an email.

  • How can you tell a Fake iPhone or iPod Touch before buying?

    Hello Gurus-
This Christmas I decided to get an iPod Touch 2G 32 gb. In shopping around and doing some comparisons, I decided I also wanted to get an iPhone. Now, like anyone, I want to get the best deal. So I have been looking around at Touches and iPhones. There are a lot of brand new touches on Ebay coming from people in India, Sri Lanka, etc. and I was keeping an eye out. I have also been looking at iPhones on ebay, because although I don't mind paying 300+ for a touch, I can't justify paying an additional 500+ for an iPhone. So, I was hoping to find a used one that someone didn't want anymore. Well, yesterday, as I was surfing the net, I came across a web site that sells all these "iPod Touch" and "iPhone"s, obviously to resellers as they are in bulk. The ads they offer are exactly the same as the ads on ebay, but in a garbled note at the bottom they say "x.ffyes, not no real.Fake" So, what I was hoping someone can tell me is how you can know an iPod Touch or iPhone is real before you buy? I am sure there are plenty of ligit people out there that just want to sell their used phone for any number of reasons. How can I weed them out from the clones and fakes? Thanks so much for your help.

I assume you are not in USA and there are a lot of iPhones outside USA that have been unlocked unofficially and they turn into a brick if you upgrade to 2.2. If it works with 2.2 then it probably is a real unlocked iPhone.
Just pay the 500euro and buy an officially unlocked one from Apple official retailers in the countries that have that. (France, Belgium, HongKong, Australia to name a few) It's worth it.

  • Fake iPod in stores!!

i bought this iPod. it doesnt look like an original one but it hav an apple sign on it & its physical features assembles iPod nano. what makes it diff is only its play button is replaced with a vol button and the play button is in the middle & instead of having a hold button(on/off) it have a slide on to off button. i had problems dwnld-ing songs into it, i tried evry single steps written in apple.com. after couple of weeks, i was told that my "iPod" wasn't really an iPod. i am so frustrated. i cant replace it or complain since i bought this "iPod" overseas, wic in korea. i hope apple will take this serious as many people are tricked by this fake iPod & thus not trusting apple products. i evr wanted to own an iPod but ended up tricked by a fake iPod.

Don't know the laws in the country where you purchased the "fake" iPod, but if you have a receipt that identifies the retailer where you purchased it then you may have a case. Check with the appropriate authorities in the country you purchased it. Obviously, since you purchased a fake it was not from an Apple authorized retailer. It would be pretty safe to assume that Apple can't do much for your individual case but it would probably be helpful if you contact Apple directly to give them this info. It wouldn't hurt and it may help keep this from happening to others that visit the same location.

  • Fake iPods

A company here in the UK, which I have used before, is selling the most blatant iPod copy that I've ever seen. You can see it advertised on their website at http://www.shop4usb.co.uk/oscommerce-2.2ms2/catalog/productinfo.php?productsid=309
Now, I got their newsletter advertising this thing at the weekend. I decided to complain to them, and inform Apple. I sent them an email querying the product, and left a negative review on their website. (The other reviews look completely made up!) Their response: no reply to the email, but they removed my review and altered the wording slightly on the product info. (The original - and I've taken a copy - says, 'Looks like a well known fuity (sic) mp3/mp4 (sic) player but infact has more functions and compatibility than you could shake a big stick at', whereas the new version is simply, 'Fantastic looking and extremely easy to use little player with more functions and compatibility than you could shake a big stick at... '. Assuming that 'fuity' actually meant 'fruity', it's hard to see how this could be more blatant.
I tried to send information about this thing to Apple. That's not straightforward; there's no obvious email address on their website that you can send this kind of thing to. Antbody got any ideas how to alert Apple to this kind of thing? Or, by posting here, have I already done so?
I've sent a copy of this to an Apple-related news site too. Any other suggestions welcome.
Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I'm not arguing whether this would be something Apple could/would/should persue....I agree that asthetically the player is pretty close to a carbon copy. What I was referring to was if in addition to it's asthetic appearance, the player used the Apple Brand name and symbols on the product to out front imply that the player is indeed an Apple iPod when in fact it is not. In that aspect, legally speaking (and considering various international laws that would come into play), I would assume that the company could be charged with some variance of copyright infringement (for using the Apple copy righted brand name) and intellectual property theft/Industrial Design theft for copy-cat use of the overall look associated with an iPod. And I guess if Apple got their hands on one and confirmed that the other company managed to copy their interface that would be another charge. There may be other infringements...I just meant that from first look at it, unless they removed any straight reference to the player being an Apple iPod, that may be one thing they can argue in saying that their product is not a fake iPod as they have not labeled it as such.
At any rate, I truly didn't mean to take the topic this far off track so I apologize to anyone that may be annoyed by this. Just found the whole thing interesting.

  • FAKE IPOD SHUFFLES

Hi, my young nephew (11 years old) purchased an iPod shuffle from eBay. When he couldn't get it to work, he called me. After very close inspection, I determined it wasn't a real ipod shuffle. It has all the apple logos, packaging etc... Very good bootleg.
Who do I report this to at apple? Is there a fraud 'hotline'? I want this guy shut down.
    Thanks
    JP

Sorry to say that this is not even close to the first time that this has happened. Some of the things folks have wound up with didn't even very closely resemble a Shuffle, much less act like one.
This should be worked back through eBay, of course, and also through PayPal if you used them. As for Apple, I don't know if there is a specific hotline for fraud or not; start out by using the Contact Us link you find at the bottom of most pages on Apple websites, then work through the trees to find the most appropriate folks for you to be talking to.

  • Shuffle not recognised as an iPod by Windows + not recognised by iTunes???

    Hi,
My daughter was bought an iPod Shuffle for her birthday by a friend. When I first went to plug it in, it didn't sync with iTunes (which I use successfully with my own iPod Classic) but instead showed up as 'mp3' on my list on My Computer and prompted me to open as if it were jusu a memory stick.
I was able to transfer songs directly across into the folder, but then found that it didn't play m4a's copied from CD, or m4p's bought from the iTunes Store by my daughter!
And then, to top it all off, when I plug it in to charge the green light flashes briefly then goes out, and doesn't seem to charge!
It was bought from a supposedly reputable eBay seller by a friend, but came in a 2 Gb box even though it's only a 1 Gb one, plus didn't have a dock with it, only a USB to phono cable. Now I don't know if it's just the wrong cable or something else wrong, but I've tried everything I can find on these forums and on the Apple website to no avail and it's driving me crazy!
Can anybody help before we try to enter into a dispute with the seller?
    Thanks,
    Andy

IF it plays mp3s that are directly loaded to it without using iTunes to manage it, it's a knock-off clone of the shuffle (eg FAKE)... the other clue that it isn't a shuffle is the USB cable. Shuffles come with a dock with cable attached.
Also, is the on-off switch next to the earphone jack as in this image:

  • My ipod's music quality is inferior. It doesnt have the surround sound/ left and right audio channel unlike my brothers ipod? is there a problem with the chip?

I have an ipod touch 4g (8GB), I got this about 2.5 months ago, the same time my brother get his. My problem is that I noticed that audio quality is better on his device than mine. I have been listening to music and had different music devices before (non-Apple product and mobile phone) and the quality of music is better when I used to listen to those devices as well as my brother's ipod touch. Im referring to the left and right audio channels. Im not so good about the technical stuff but the best explanation I can give you is in a music or a movie, there's an effect wherein you can here a sound only at the left ear phone/speaker that you cant hear at the right earphone/speaker. I mean for example in a song, a guitar intro can be heared only at the left
ear while the background music plays on the other ear. Or when theres and echo effect on the song that alternates sound on the left and right ear. I hope youre getting what Im trying to say. Im bothered that my ipod is fake or has an internal problem on the chips or something because I didnt bought this at an Apple Center/Mac Center. I bought it on a retailer. I am not able to visit any store or Genius Bar  or contact an apple specialist through phone because of my work schedule and work load.  I have contacted the retailer before when I tried to return it for replacement or repair but he told me that it is under Apple's warranty, not theirs. I do hope that I can get a help from you because I want to really enjoy my device. Thank you and Im looking forward for the responce/assistance form you.

I suggest you don't apply pressure to the screen - it's a Touch - you touch the screen not push it.

  • Ipod mini sometimes charges and sometimes doesnt. Is software the problem?

I am having problems with my ipod mini. On some days it charges and on other days it "fake charges".
By "fake charges" I mean : leaving it to charge on my computer via usb cable overnight and it did not completely give me the charge sign. I would unplug it seeing an almost fully charged icon of the battery on the top right hand corner of the ipod. But as soon as I unplug the ipod I get the message that it has no more battery power and tells me to please plug it to a power source. Then it resets and when I reboot it the battery icon shows me that it never really charged and the icon is exactly the same before I tried charging it.
When it does charge the battery it would usually lasts up to 6 hours+ depending on the volume I put it at. Therefore I know that it isnt a battery problem but still clueless. On occasions the ipod would just shut off by itself after continious play and it was untouched + on hold.
I have tried charging on my own laptop and on several occasions used different versions of itunes. The newest itunes did not charge my ipod after many attempts so I used an older version which suprisingly worked and my ipod was able to charge fully. Then it stopped working not knowing why but I also tried other versions of itunes. They worked for awhile leading me to suspect that this maybe a software issue. After that I decided to give itunes 7.1 a try and it was fine.
I have tried restoring it many times with 7.1 itunes. They worked for awhile and allowed my battery to fully charge but I see no permanent results. My brother told me that constant reformatting of the ipod hard drive will eventually cause it to fail like any other hard drive but I am not sure if this information is true or not.
I have also tried charging it on the iMAC. My school owns a couple of iMACs so I tried charging it for an hour. Once again it "faked charged". Then I tried charging it on another iMAC and surprisingly it charges. I left it there for 2 hours and took it off the iMAC and the battery life would remain 3/4 full while playing songs. I am not sure what the difference was but the current iMAC I used had 7.1 itunes version not the 7.11 one that newly came out.
I am wondering if anyone has the same or similar problem like mine's. I am stumped at what is causing the problem and I am sad to say that itunes and quicktime has damaged my dell laptop to the point that my computer freezes every 10 minutes. It basically killed my computer and I have a program that tells me that the problem is caused by not finding the registry for itunes and quicktime making it freeze and sucking my CPU usuage to the max of 100%.
I am also quite diappointed at Apple's support because they just told me that it is the battery that needs to be replaced. I dont think that is the case. It can hold a charge but wont charge!
I am in an awful situation I think I'm going insane. the ipod that I orginially thought was a good idea is causing chao in my surroundings. I now have to fix my ipod and computer. I would be happy for any replys and suggestions. I am indeed sorry for my long post but I just wanted to make sure that I address all the problems with the ipod.
Dell Laptop   Windows XP   approx 4 years old

If you restored to factory defaults/new iPod (you did not say the type of restore your performed) and are still having the problem that indicates a hardware problem. An appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order..

--Sorry for reposting on "Using ipod mini". I realized this has more viewers.

As I mentioned before...I did charge it with an Apple Adapter and it still "fake charged". I'm just wondering if it is the software that is causing the hardware of the ipod mini to screw up and not charge. It's just a hunch/theory.
I'm not sure if your point about "USB ports are not always a reliable way to charge an iPod" because thats all that Apple gives you with the new ipods. The adapter also functions with a USB. My mini is the second gen, not the first...it functions on USB and not firewire like most first gen of ipod mini. My computer is pretty old so there is only 1 usb port which is used by the ipod alone. So that can't be the problem.
Also I think it is ok to leave my computer overnight because I configured my computer to never sleep. I've also been charging my ipod over 4 hours and it still doesnt charge.
I read "The ipod battery unplugged". It doesnt really help me. It doesnt address any of the problems I'm having. Thanks though.

  • I have four devices on one Apple ID, i have separate emails and phone numbers for each device but when I tried to add one to my iPod, it said that the email was already in use.

I have four devices on one Apple ID, i have seperate emails and phone numbers for each device but when I tried to add one to my iPod, it said that the email was already in use.  I have tried many things and the only guess I have is that either someone else has this email as their iMessage but is fake or it wasn't taken off my old iPod when I reset it.  Any ideas on what to do?

Thanks but that doesn't give me the information I need.  I am putting an email on my ipod for people to contact me for iMessage and FaceTime but when I put the email in, it gives me an error saying that the email cannot be veirified because it is already in use.  My Apple ID can be varified, just not the email that they will contact me with.

  • How do I fix the connection issues on my iPod Touch 4th generation to connect to iMessage?

I am getting very frustrated with this iPod Touch 4th generation. I have been using my 2nd generation iPod Touch to use iMessage to text people and use as a 'fake iPhone' because carrying around my cell phone and iPod is annoying.
Basically, I have tried multiple times to change the DNS on every network to the google public server (8.8.8.8) and this does not work.
I attempt to sign in to my Apple ID on iMessage and it says "iMessage Activation: Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again." Even though it claims I cannot connect to the internet, I can connect and browse on Safari and other Apps, but iMessage (also Facetime) will never connect or let me sign in. I continually receive that error message that I need to check my network connection. I just don't understand why. iMessage will work on my iPad 3rd gen and my iPod Touch 2nd gen, but not my iPod Touch 4th gen.
I am using my college's WiFi network and it is hit and miss in my building, but both my iPod touch 2nd gen and iPad 3rd gen can receive iMessages and everything fine. I am starting to think that the 4th gen ipod touch just has a crappy wifi receiver or something.
PLEASE help me fix this. I don't know what else to do.
I just updated to iOS 6.1.2 and that did not fix it either.

I know this question is no related directly to your topic, but I wanted to know how did you get imessage in ipod touch 2g. I have one but it doesn't have imessage. I will appreciate your help. Thanks in advance.

  • My iPod touch (5th gen) was updated today to iOS 7.1 and now my charger isn't working. I bought my charger on eBay after the one I received from Apple stopped working. Help?

I've been using a charger I bought off of eBay for cheap because the one I received with my iPod had stopped working, so instead of paying for a new Apple cord, I went with the cheaper option. It has been working fine up until today. I updated my iPod today to iOS 7.1 and now it won't recognize the cord at all. I'm wondering if anyone had any answers to why this is happening? Or if you have any suggestions as to how I could charge my iPod until I purchase a new cord. Is it smarter to go with an Apple cord, or can I stick with other manufactorers?

The iOS update made the iPod less tolerent of marginal/fake Lightning cables. All you can do is get a certified Lightning cable. I would get a genuine Apple cable.
