Is my iPod killing my iBook?

I'm on my 3rd iPod (meaning that I returned 2 and was given brand new ones by the Apple store followed by a, "this one better break by X date if you need it replaced."). Well, this iPod appears to be fried now too and I'm past X date.
I've been diligently trying to reset it via my iBook. It's not working and it keeps either automatically shutting down the iBook with no warning or freezing it up (the colored wheel has been spinning for at least the last 30 minutes while nothing else happens). Is this bad?
I know it's probably time to give up, admit defeat and chuck the iPod (after living its short 1-year life), BUT is it in any way worth it to keep hooking it up to my iBook in hopes of updating/reseting it? Is hooking up the toxic iPod killing my iBook? Help.

  • Ipod killed two of my headphones.....

i jus recently had this problem, two of my headphones (not ipod headphones)play no sound when the cord is moved a certain way, and one of the headphones is like a yr old, and the weird part is that yesterday the newer one was workin fine for like most of the day then it quit makin sound when tha cord was moved a little bit.... i didn't do anything to these headphones, all i did was carry my ipod in my pocket w/ tha headphones plugged in.... I was j/w if this has happened to anyone else.... i mean they still kinda work but i havta hold the cord from movin' and if it moves like a mm the sound goes away til i find he "sweet spot" again...

well why would i have to send in my ipod? i mean i
understand when the headphone jack gets bent and
    all....
If the headphone jack on the iPod is broken/not
working properly, you would have to send in the iPod
    for repair.
umm... so the headphone jack is waht is causing my headphones to die, cuz i mean they completely died, i even plugged them into other headphone port and they didn't work, so would the headphone jack in the ipod kill headphones if it is broken? i really need to know cuz i jus bought some new ones and i don't want them to die, because 1.) they are my 3rd pair, and 2.) i have no more money to buy new ones so i need/want ta know if the headphone jack is the reason for the dying headphones.....

  • IPod Mini to iBook - songs greyed out

Wonder if someone could help. I have just legally moved songs from my IBM laptop to by iBook as per the Mac Store suggestion. I then upgraded the iPod mini to be a 'Mac' format, and erased all songs on it.
I then copied all teh songs from the IBM to the iBook, and they play fine.
The songs transferred to the iPod and they all appear, and they play fine from the iPod control wheel. All seems OK.
BUT(!) when I have the iPod connectred in the latest versiojn of iTunes, and I see it as a device, the songs are greyed (grayed) out and cannot be played from iTunes. Before I upgraded, I could do this and control the iPod from both the iBook andn the IBM laptop and start / stop songs etc..
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks in advance

Jeff, thnaks for the advice. Just one thing I forgot to mention was that there is a little closed padlock icon next to the Mb used at the bottom of the screen window. But I'll have a go at your suggestion. Thanks again.

  • 2 iPods and 1 iBook

How can my husband and I share iTunes on one iBook to update our 2 iPods? We each have an iPod.
Do we transfer our music manually or automatically?
Do we need to create a log-on profile for each of us before we transfer our music to the iPods. We share the same Apple store account and computer now with one log-on.

I found the answer to my question in 'connection query' (dated Oct 28 posted by Brian Murry 2) in this same discussion.
    Thanks to all.

  • Fixed Ipod killed by 1-10 update

My ipod was killed by the 1-10-2006 updater. Symptoms were:
    1) Exclamation point folder icon
    2) Connecting it to the PC would freeze the PC
    3) Ipod Updater/Itunes would not recognize the ipod
    4) Hard disk would whirr and click and would have the 'do not disconnect' sign that never went out.
    Here's what I did:
    1) Got a linux box, fdisked the various partitions, and copied the binary of the 11-17-2005 update over.
    2) Eventually, after rebooting it a bunch of times into disk mode, was able to get ipod update to update the ipod.
    3) It STILL wasn't recognized, so I
    a) opened the case
    b) removed bits of loose plastic from around various connectors
    c) tightened the hard disk connection
    d) (important) unplugged the battery and plugged it back together.
When I plugged it back into the PC, Itunes found it and everything worked fine.

I updated my iPod last night, and today I discovered the same problem all of you are describing. But, after fiddling with it a bit I think I've figured out more details, though none of it helps me fix it. When I play any video that I've downloaded from iTunes, no matter the play length or file size, it plays perfectly fine. But, when I play a video that I've converted outside of iTunes, and if the video is about twenty minutes or longer, it pauses after 30 seconds of playing and then goes silent while the video resumes. I can play short non-iTunes videos okay, but as soon as I play a longer one, kaput. I first noticed it when I was trying to watch an episode of Smallville, and then I tried watching a twenty minute video from IGN. But, when I went to something short, it played with no problems.
Anyone else fine tune the problem? Any other fix besides blasting it and going back to a previous update?

  • Ipod + mac minis + ibook = trouble, right here in river city

I have a 2nd generation ipod. I use it for music and file storage. The ipod moves between 3 different mac mini's and one ibook. The mini's all run OS 10.4.11 and the ibook is operating with 10.2.8.
I haven't had any problems with anything until this very morning.
The ipod is NOT showing up on my desktop or in iTunes on the ibook. It is showing up in the Apple System profiler.
I have not updated anything, changed any settings, connected it to a PC or even listened to the ipod.
It seemingly just doesn't want to talk to the ibook.
Can anyone help? I've looked at the other threads on related issues, but nothing seemed to help.
    Thanks,
    Sara

Just as I thought. Thank you.

  • Ipod and the ibook

which ipod will sync with my 500mhz ibook? via firewire or usb 1.1

my G4 was a tower, which I did put a 2.0 card in later & the ipods were already set up. ibooks don't have this luxury tho.
might be a trick there: use a mac with USB 2.0, to do the initial setup & then connect to whatever.
so yeah, you would think that 1.1 support wouldn't be that hard...
but having worked support in the past (not for apple products), supporting hardware & software 5+ years old when new products are constantly coming out, it cost a lot to train, maintain, & manage this knowledge - personnel & database wise.
Apple historically only has call in support & patches for the 2 newest versions of OS X. new / refurb parts for any particular machine are available for about 4-5 years tops.
on one hand, I see that perspective, that apple is likly looking at. on the other hand, you shouldn't be forced to buy a new machine if you don't want one...

  • IPOD kills laptop... help

Help me please... I have been connecting 5th Gen iPod to my IBM T41 laptop via USB for the last few months and everything has been fine, however on Monday when I plugged my iPod in via USB it blew the power supply on my laptop immediately, in effect killing my laptop.
The only solution was to get a new laptop (luckily work have a few) and when I plugged iPOD in to my new laptop the same happened (but removing the battery for a bit enables me to turn laptop backon this time).
I am guessing it is something to do with a power spike from the iPOD battery or something, but why has it just started now.
    Thanks in advance

I don't know if this will help... I have the same ipod and ran it on a desk top machine for a couple of weeks without problem, charged up loaded my tunes all fine, then it all started to go down hill...
Plugged in the ipod it loaded itunes and within 2-3 minutes computer crashed with all sorts of dire warnings both before it rebooted and having reloaded win XP.
Long story cut short, unplugged all usb peripherals leaving only the ipod connected to a USB2 port it still crashed and continued to do so five or six times - I took fright and decided to seek help.
No help to be found so I plugged it into a laptop (USB1) (having installed itunes to it got it up and running no problem took the opertunity of upgrading itunes and the ipod s/w and thought I would do a complete reinstall of the ipod s/w back to factory fresh. Did that and worked fine on the laptop.
Plugged it into the desktop rather expecting it to crash again (this was yesterday) and so far no problem have added some of my tunes just to check and all seems ok so far.
So........... Wonder if you have a corruption on your ipod that is doing your laptop in?
    Hope this helps.

  • 2nd generation ipod touch and ibooks

Last year I downloaded the Nook app and was able to purchase and read books on my ipod.  I recently purchased an ebook and iTunes said that I needed to download ibook.  I have not been able to find an ios app that will allow me to download ibooks.  Can I circumvent this and just use the Nook app that worked so beautifully just last year?  Update says that I have the most current ios app.

I accidentaly deleted iBooks on my itouch 2G a few months ago and lost a lot of books in that way.
I got it back by downlaoding the latest version of iTunes, there you have a list of previosuly downlaod apps on your itouch. Sync your itouch first. When that is done, go to the list again, there is an option to install the app(in this case iBooks)and it downlaoded within 20 seconds!
I got all my books back and I am very happy
I hope this works for you too!

  • Older iPod touch and ibooks

version os 4.2.1 and ibooks seem to be a problem.  can you help?
    thank's

    - The 2G iPod can only go as high as iOS 4.2.1. It does not have the hardware to support a higher iOS version.
    - Your only way is if you have the version that was compatible on your computer such as in the recycle bin/trash or in a computer file backup. In that case delete the current version that is in your iTunes App library and replace it with the older version. Then sync.
    - You can only download the current version from the App store.

  • Will a new Ipod work with Ibook G3 600MHz (Dual USB)?

I have a Ibook G3 600MHz (Dual USB) with USB 1 and I'm considering buying a new 30GB Ipod; Apple recommends USB 2.0. Will this Ipod work with my Ibook?
    Thanks

you really need USB2 high powered ports to be able to charge your ipod correctly....
you could use USB1 to synch files but it will be painfully slow
and you could get a USB2 iPod charger to charge your ipod

  • Ipod killing USB-cables, help!

My Ipod has a problem. It kills USB-cables and some cables don't even get in. I sent my Ipod to Apple to be repaired. But nothing was found wrong. It killed my first cable, now the second cable doesn't work. The cables from friends don't get in. At the store where I bought it, the same story. Why is this happening? I'm so frustrate. Help me! I don't now what to do.

Bring it in to Apple.  Maybe the battery is dead.

  • Ipod killed?

I think I killed my iPod. I was using iTunes when it decided to freeze up on me. I had to use control/Alt/Delete to shut the program off, and afterwards my iPod continued to say "Do Not Disconnect". Against the warning, I disconnected it. I've tried the 5 R's but I cannot get it to do anything. The only thing it shows is the apple symbol or that the battery is low. But it won't even light up or get color. Please help. What can I do?
    Did I kill my iPod?
I really don't want to send it in if I don't have to. I've had it for a month and a half and have had the worst problems with it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

] Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
and do the Restore to factory setting. Otherwise,
Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

  • HT4059 I've downloaded ibooks and downloaded the free Beatles book to see what ibooks looks like. I click on the book inside itunes and nothing happens. Also, the book doesn't show up on my ipod touch within ibooks. What am I doing wrong?

I also tried to use it with an epub book and the same issue. It shows both books under "books" in itunes but I can't open either one. Neither shows up within ibooks on my ipod touch 4th gen. Thanks for help.

    Hi..
Tap the iBooks app not iTunes.
On your iPod tap Settings > Store
    Make sure Books is enabled.
